OS confirms that Blackpool wanted to talk to him earlier this week, but the approach was rejected and Wellens clearly didn't mind all that much as he's signed the new deal.

His hard work on the training pitch, and out watching games, is second to none as well as his efforts around the club and in the community.

Shurely shome mishtake?

Wasn't expecting that !!!,  absolutely superb news, not only showing his commitment to the club which I'm sure all fans will appreciate it also means that should some club try to poach him there would be a reasonable cash sum payable.
Think that this wont happen as it clearly appears his heart is in this club,  Can't see any reason why he would want to leave,  Chairman appears to have a good working relationship with him, more than he has with any previous manger. Three and a half years is a long time in football,  probably be in the Premiership by then !!.  Long may the relationship continue.

REALLY fucking happy with this.

Quite possibly the best bit of news we will have all season. Asides from if/when promotion is confirmed, perhaps.

And 3 1/2 years. That's quite a statement and will help deter other clubs that might come sniffing around.

Defuckinglighted.

Well, maybe his signing a new contract also shows his belief in the infrastructure of the club is a real goer - with the training ground being his priority. He’s banged on about the lack of decent facilities so he must have an assurance things will change.

In his pre-Mansfield presser he said the club is ‘one on the up’.

Good news. Clearly this is the start of the 'project' and Wellens sees himself to lead us to greater days. Finally we look to be getting some continuity and we are moving in the right direction with a very promising young manager.

Long may it continue.

Well deserved after he's done a great job so far. Really happy with this. Now all we need is a training ground and he'll have all he wants for the long term

Good news, hopefully challenging for top two of league one come renewal time with crowds and infrastructure at that level.

After that who knows, money needed for championship seems beyond us and power currently

Brilliant news. This bloke is the footballing equivalent of an electronic magnet in a scrapyard. The players and agents who will be banging on his door, emailing and phoning him when we go up is not to be underestimated. Success breeds success and we are on an upward trajectory. Championship here we come

I am less worried about Blackpool trying to entice Wellens away at the moment than I am that Sunderland/Ipswich/Peterborough/Portsmouth/Barnsley/Stoke/Wigan/Middlesborough will come hunting for a new manager in the Summer when they get relegated from the Championship/not promoted from L1 come May when we have been promoted as champions.

Good news and suggests he’s been given assurances that resources will be available to him.

I stupidly thought this would be treated as good news by all of our fans but some have been moaning that he’ll be expensive to sack now or should only ever be a 1 year deal. Nothing like a glass half empty....

They're the balls you'll need to juggle with something like this, so for example Colin Calderwood had a contract extension earlier this season and was then sacked.  If we do go up it does make it difficult for a bigger fish to come in the summer, not impossible but we'd get decent compo.

I wonder what will happen with Noel Hunt..... when Wellens signed I was dubious about Hunt as he was a Power pick with no obvious connection to Wellens, who said he wanted experience.  But they seem to work well together....

I’d forgotten that. I always assumed Hunt was a Wellens man. As you say, they seem to gel well.

Successful Managers, like players, are always liable to get headhunted.

But Wellens has Tommy Wright too. I doubt Hunt treats himself as senior to Wright....

No, Power said Noel Hunt was a long term friend of Paul Jewells, and Wellens was well known to Paul Jewell, both came from the Jewell connection and apparently had known each other for many years on coaching courses, it wasn't just Powers doing.

Our coaching set up is excellent at the moment. As well as Wellens, Hunt and Wright you have Jewell in the background and even Mildenhall is very active during matches which makes a change from most keeper coaches.

I thought that too. So you're probably wrong :)

Best news in ages, certainly our best signing in ages.

Just waiting for "someone" to point out how well it went last time we signed up a well-regarded young manager on a long term deal ;)

Great news and well done to the club for getting an already-excellent and improving manager locked in. He may well be the most valuable asset on the books.

The longer contract will probably deter the Blackpools of this world, whilst the Sunderlands and Ipswichs would have to show us the colour of their money.

Cracking news. Something I'm sure most if not nearly all of us can agree on.

The 3.5 year deal does tie in with my earlier comments on a thread about Wellens potentially being poached in 3.5-4.5 seasons, by a descending Prem or ascending Champ side (and no not the potato based dish).

Yeah. Who’d have thought Power knew what he was doing!

Tbf, he deserves to have appointed a manager who has turned out to be a success. The previous couple were probably the right ‘sort’ of managers but, unfortunately, not the right actual manager.

If I'm not mistaken Jewell said something along the lines of if/when Wellens goes, so will he. It was in some interview he did that mentioned Power had actually approached him for the manager job and that's when he recommended Wellens.

Apologies for the source.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7982193/Paul-Jewell-lost-football-hes-working-old-magic-Swindon-Town.html

Quote
Instead he was attracted by Derby County’s history, but the team were relegated to the Championship. Another spell at Ipswich was unsuccessful and Jewell seemed lost to football until his former Bradford team-mate and now Swindon chairman Lee Power offered him the manager’s job at the County Ground.

Jewell didn’t want the job, but recommended Wellens, with whom he had worked briefly at Oldham. Power agreed, but only if Jewell came to help as director of football.

‘Director of Football aren’t usually nice words in England, but Richie knows I’m not after his job. If he got the sack, I’d go as well,’ explains Jewell.

‘I can deal with agents during the transfer window, let him concentrate on the football and maybe help him avoid certain mistakes by talking things through. I like the way he works and treats people. There is no reason he can’t get to the Premier League.’

Everything has come together so well with the Club, it's like a golden age.

I didn't enjoy the last few years watching Swindon, but this season I really look forward to going out to see the very good intense football we now play, with no, or few, weak links in the line-up.

I agree, but it’s important that we capitalise on it, and create something for the long term. That means using this good springboard to change the infrastructure of the club for the better - long term sustainable funding, a training ground of our own, an updated stadium, and ultimately, playing football at the right end of L1 and threatening to be the Championship. All the signs are good, but we there is much to do.
