Title: Scunthorpe v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Thursday, August 1, 2019, 13:06:58
 :)

Seeing as we did this last season, I thought "why not?".
Difficult one to predict, but I'll go for 1-1. Att: 4,867 (856).
Wobbly Bob, got any boozers in mind?

Hope I'm wrong but looks like one of the worst openers we could have wished for. Expect Scunthorpe to be up there and it's a place where we get smashed in recent times.

Think it will be a few games in before we get going properly.

3-1

Whatever the result I expect us to do well this season and I'm excited to have the footie back.

COYR.

Hope not I'll be driving down to Cornwall with the kids in the car.

Comfortable 0-3 win is preferable.

A bold move. It might just work.

Scunthorpe fans on Facebook and other forums are massively confident with several predicting an opening day absolute rout of us, with 3-0 or 4-0 very common predictions.

Scunthorpe is not a good ground for Town to visit and as stated on the other thread the Town have only ever won 9 opening day fixtures at away grounds in 120 seasons!

I would love a win up there but would be more than happy with a draw.

2-1 defeat with Yates scoring in front of 4,255 with 512 Town fans there.

I actually dreamt that score last night. Only problem was a semi naked Marilyn Monroe got the opener, so I'm not sure I can trust it.

Scunny the Town, must be bundle of laughs atm, what with the Steel Works closing down.  Very much the downside of being a one horse town.

I think it'll take a little while for Town to get going and for Wellens to get the balance of the midfield and forwards right. Hence I'm expecting a bit of a tonking on Saturday. 4-1 to the Iron. Despite this, I'm looking forward to the match and the vibe of the first game of the new season.

It’s hard to see where the goals are going to come from unless Woolery finally matures with the aid of some expert attaching coaching. Everyone seems to be convinced that we will get spanked and if the iron are as complacent as we are negative then that could work in our favour. I think that Wellens has done okay so far and I am cautiously optimistic that he will do well with the resources he has. I’m not sure how competitive our budget is though so it may well be a struggle to make the playoffs.

We've improved as a team under Wellens, with higher pressing and quicker closing down. With the addition of improved players, I think we're in for a good season and should easily make the playoffs.

Avoid defeat against Scunthorpe would be a good start.

1-1

After the Carlisle game, the team under Wellens only lost by two goals twice for the remainder of the season.  How come people think we'll get a drubbing?

Mostly a different XI..... after a good start to pre-season on the recruitment front it went a bit pear shaped, with missed targets, and a raft of trialists of dubious provenance.  This has seemingly lead to a squad not looking fit for auto, which should be the aim, with a massive hole still up front ( we still hope for that to be rectified, but going into tomorrow it hasn't)

Further we again seem to have quite a few around the squad who aren't to be used.... like Keshi.  I think this leads people to think, the XI of many new players might be a bit skin deep, and perhaps a little flaky when the pressure of a grim Lincolnshire bombardment comes on... bit like last season at Sincil Bank.   I can see why people think it.... doesn't mean it will transpire mind.

Did Wellens say he wouldn't use Anderson then? He's transfer-listed but I don't recall reading that he wouldn't be used, if required. Same goes for the other transfer-listed players.

So, getting Isgrove, Lyden and the Norwich lad in the last few days equates to it going pear shaped on the recruitment front.....😁

As for the "trialists of dubious provenance" is that not the same as every other team and every other season? Who are you referring to anyway?

He's actually said quite the opposite. I think it was on the recent phone-in that he said he will be used as needed.

Wellens did say he wanted a fee for Anderson but wouldn't stand in his way if a good career move came along.

He praised his, and the other 2 transfer listed players attitudes (the other 2 we will not want a fee for), I am not sure that Anderson would be the right frame of mind to play for the 1st team but he could well be an option, playing for a move may bring something more out of him which 3 previous managers couldn't get from him.

I think if Wellens saw a desire in Anderson then he would play him.

1. Publically putting a player on the list isn't a ringing endorsement and I'll use them as a last resort isn't likely to get the best out of someone... it very much suggests he'll use others before any of the transfer listed 3.

2. Given their lack of games in recent times, it does suggest, getting in bodies because we have to, rather than them being clearly identified targets, likely to drive an auto push.

3. I don't know what others do, but I can't really think of anybody who we've got in trial and then signed who has been successful.   Perhaps you can.

Watching Afcon recently, I was minded that winners Algeria had Rais M'Bholi in goal who we had on trial under Sturrock as a 20 year old, still only 33 and very decent keeper. We didn't sign him.

First game of the  season. You always get freak results somewhere, making predictions a bit tricky.

Brum aside, we haven't looked too porous. I think it'll be a narrow loss, but will be happy with a draw.

I think most of our leakiness vs Brum can be put down to inept goalkeeping.

1. It's pretty bleeding obvious that he'll players others first but they are still available if necessary. But you claimed they won't be used. Facts....remember.

2. I've got no idea who you are talking about or what point you are responding to.

3. Why are you asking that? I was querying your statement that we had a load of trialists of dubious provenance not how succesful previous trialists have been. My point is that we have done nothing different to any other year or any other club.

1. So you agree they won't be used unless in an emergency..

2. Lyden, Isgrove and Jaiyesimi as per your point.

3. Presumably the point of recruitment is to end up with a squad that will get you up.  Whatever we've done in recent years recruitment wise hasn't really worked outside of the TT link.... therefore repeating past procedures doesn't bode well.   I wanted to see, a continuation of the Yates scenario.... whereby Wellens says he was his top target and managed to land him for the season. Similarly Devitt, Mayor, Maynard, Robinson and Bennett were identified, but sadly not landed, hence the trialists..... fellas with no club.

Charlie Austin

I have no recall of CA trialling in a pre-season friendly.... Cherno Samba, yes.

My recall is that Fitton knew him from Hungerford and we paid 50 grand to Poole, after Bormuff couldn't do the deal as they had an umbongo.

Not a preseason trial, but a trial none the less.

Quote from: Charlie Austin
“I trained with Bournemouth for six weeks and did all my pre-season and then I went to Swindon for a week’s trial and scored against Swansea,” explained Austin.

Interesting to note he also had a trial with us before he went to Hungerford, but was injured.

I was talking about these pre season trials.... in that season CA came we trialled Yan Klukowski, who scored 3 but obviously didn't convince so ended up at FGR where he did well, and eventually got some league football at Newport.  He scored against us in the Boycott in 2014.

Why dont we wait 10 games or so and then discuss whether the recruitment has been a success or not.

The continual knocking and pissing on everyone’s chips is tedious in the extreme.

The only position we seem to have struggled in recruitment is a striker.  If we were using that as a basis for the season ahead and specifically the first game, I'd hardly be bleating about the fact we were due to get a pasting at Scunthorpe.  More likely we'd in a tight game without too many goals?

Reg - the last three signings - zero evidence of any state of panic in them, I don't see why you think that.  Isgrove we wanted but were not sure on fitness - he was told a deal was his to lose.  Lyden filled a spot Wellens decided he needed once Rose & McGlip were both injured but wasn't originally a priority.  The lad from Norwich - we have no idea, we got not clue he was on our radar but Wellens did make some mention about a few players not signing until later in the summer.  Maybe Norwich told us to wait until they had decided what they were doing with him??

The last 3 signings made 17 league starts between them in 18/19.... maybe not panic, but there has to be a big ? whether they're robust enough for an attritional Div 4 campaign.

Add in Rose and it is just isn't convincing.  OK injuries can happen to anyone, but I fail to see how you're convinced these are the men identified to get us upwardly mobile.  However the last 2 seasons you've said we should get into the PO's easily, but haven't.

I’d suggest the line of thinking with regards to getting us upwardly mobile is because people happens to think they are better players than those they are replacing?

He was a Chelsea player who we paid 50K for...
... who'd had a very indifferent season on loan to Northampton the season before, Cobblers fans were only too happy to tell us what a poor signing he was. Exactly the kind of player you'd be describing as "not convincing". Maybe wait and see before you sound the death knell? Matt Heywood is instructive on this, saw him on Twitter the other day saying you can't tell anything about what kind of season you're going to have until you're 6 or so games in. Certainly not in pre-season.

People are of course entitled to their view, the debate is what it's all about expecially pre season.  If people want to think these 3 are the men earmarked to get us up, then fine, not everyone will agree.

However SSP did turn out in 40 games for Cobbs, meaning he played in more than  Rose and our 3 newbies combined in 18/19.  It took SSP one game to convince Town fans.

This isn't about predicting how the season might pan out.... 6 games is way too few, anyway.

Rather it is a response to trying to answer RobT's question as to why several posters feel we might get a tonking.....

You should apply for a job with the groundstaff, you shift the goalposts that often.

I think you'll find my approach has been consistent all summer... aim: autos. Intent needed in recruitment to reflect this. Off to a good start with targets identified, and coming in good time for pre-season work.

Reservations expressed about the likelihood of alleged "marquee" targets being doable, given budget and recent record, hence Wellens as a rookie gaffer in his first summer, may well come up against, what he wants not matching with what he can get.... and I'd say thus far that has been the case.

This seems to have prompted his compromise of getting players with dodgy fitness records who perhaps when fully firing could have some quality about them. It's a big risk, but may bring reward. However hand on heart, I cannot in all honesty say it looks like a proper shot at what is needed.

If you listen to his interviews he indicates that it's more about reasons for the injury player X has had and identifying if it looks likely to reoccur.  Hopefully a bit less of a gamble than you suggest.

Wellens also doesn't seem like a signings for signings sake kind of fellow either so all the players he has brought in must have the required attributes and temperament.

Have you read the Curran piece in the Adver?

https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/17811498.taylor-curran-reveals-honoured-part-richie-wellens-39-long-term-plan-swindon-town-ahead-tomorrow-39-s-scunthorpe-trip/

Things like the dressing room being far better than last season are important for one, especially having listened to the LS interview with Charlie this week - see the difference between 09/10 and 10/11 (Prutton destroying team morale)...

Frank Large famously got a brace on debut in 64, but never quite convinced the faithful and was soon gone.

Another brace on debut was Peter Eastoe who instsntly won Town fans over, as he came into a struggling side.

CA took 3 mins on full debut to score.... again the sort of thing to make people say "hello" especially as it got us the win at Brunton Park.

You're not even consistent from one page to the next. On the broad sweep you are, you consistently predict either mediocrity or relegation. But when you attempt to back that up with "facts", you quickly get found out (e.g. SSP etc) and shift your arguments to suit. You're entitled to your opinions, we all are. But sometimes it wouldn't hurt to admit that you're taking a punt on a hunch like the rest of us rather than present yourself as having a unique perspective based on "facts"

Norris scored in the first game at Carlisle. Not many said ‘hello’ to him!

I just don’t understand why any fan of any club can’t have even a little bit of optimism before the start of a new season.

Previous mediocrity is no indicator of future splendiferousness

But dragging up historical events as an indicator of future shitness, or even hoping for said shitness, is mind numbing.

All I ever do is look at the facts as indicators, and then  make interpretations from there. It doesn't mean they'll be right, as others may wish to see a different interpretation.  I see no "us" just individuals, I ignore some of the attempts at playground bullying.  Like there is an "us"  It's about opinions, and all I do is express mine after careful thought.

That's because we seen him the season before, however he was praised for physical courage on scoring and it was suggested maybe he could offer something in a lower Div, which more or less came to pass.

It's water off a duck's back.... but there have been some classics this summer, take the Women's WC. There were some wading in as I made the controversial statement that I hoped England would win, but didn't think they would with PN as coach.   Now I'm aware that some of this is driven by right wing trolls and their apologists, who prefer ad hominen attacks rather than wishing to discuss the merits of PN and the history of England women's football

Anyway, who is actually going tomorrow?  I'm heading up with the old man.
I'm going up with the young nephew.

I think I saw you two at the Cox hat-trick match, when the Scunny stewards were oh so desperate to stop us standing up.

I'll say hello if I see you amongst the Town hoards.

Regarding the earlier post about predictions for a heavy defeat tomorrow, my reasons are:

a) I always sway on the pessimistic side.
b) I think this is comparable to last season's early game against Lincoln - away at one of the favourites, against a team that should be very fit and in your face. There was a massive gulf between us, although to be fair, Town did perform much better against the top sides later in the season and get some cracking away wins.
c) From what I saw in pre-season, Wellens doesn't appear to have his preferred formation settled yet, which is understandable. Eg I thought the midfield had a better balance in the MU game than in the Coventry game. In the former, Doughty was seeing plenty of the ball and looked the best player on the pitch, in the latter, the presence of both May and Lyden lessened Doughty's influence.

That's the last time I was there I think, subsequent fixtures up there have been when I'm in France.

Joe Murphy (I think?) was being a right cock, one of the worst cases of a GK deliberately getting at a fan-base that I have ever seen which had a knock on effect to the stewardship as you mention.

See you there.

Pre match putting the cunt into Scunthorpe in The Honest Lawyer.
The locals don't seem interested in making plans for a future in a British Steel.
It's touch and go, but who needs Tony Jacklin or Tai the speedway guy when Scunny's most famous son is Howard Devoto.

So this is it then.
The initiation songs are out of the way and the skin fades are in place. The team is ready.
Most of the travelling army will have washed behind the ears at least once since end of season.
They are ready.
The iFollow massive are also ready.
9 months of this shit to go and a good season is overdue.
Enjoy.

Personal record here is L3 F2 A13.
Would be very happy with a point, but not too fussed about the result.
Hopefully the performance will show a hint of a defence tighter than an AOL profanity filter and a team spirit with a big dose of tempered steel.

Despite predicting a 3-1  defeat on the prediction league there is one plus point in playing Scunthorpe this early, most are expecting a Scunthorpe victory, and I would rather play them now rather than later in the season.   They probably know as much about us as we do about them,  new players etc. Players that need a few games before they start to gel,  always the chance of an upset when playing unknown teams, let's hope theis proves the point.  Well done to all the travelling fans, enjoy the day.

Perhaps he's seen the light and decided to knuckle down and prove himself.
I hope so, Wellens has nothing to lose I guess as Anderson will at least be playing for a move.

That can't be right. According to Reg, Keshi was not to be played, and he only deals with facts.

Yeah looks like it

             McCormack
Hunt   Conroy   Baudrey   Fryers
                 Lyden

Isgrove    Doughty    Anderson
           Woolery   Yates

I would think.

4-4-2 or could be a 4-2-3-1 with Keshi behind Yates.

Either way it's an attacking line up.
Good.

Good.
Yeah Keshi or Woolery both could feasibly play the more attacking point of a 451 or as a winger with a wide diamond midfield rather than 2 up top. Very flexible.

Glad we haven't gone for a back 3 with wingbacks as that didn't seem to work that well in pre season, especially with Conroy sat in front of the 3 CB's.

I thought we edged all bar 5 mins of that but they have an advantage around our box with physicality it seems.  Anderson, bar a couple of moments, has been anonymous.  Despite edging it we haven't been able to get any sort of foothold though, it's quite scrappy.  I might end up eating my words here, but whoever thought this lot were going to batter us must have been on something.  They look organised, physical and that is about it.

1 shot on target apparently to them having 2 on target.

All the new signings playing well so far.

I would say that Yates is running around and chasing the ball a lot and his tackling is good but hes not a goal grabbing striker. He reminds me a bit of Mullins so far. Lots of energy but often in the wrong areas of the pitch.

Cracking half time is ska time.

I thought over all Anderson has done quite well TBH. Linking up with Woolery and Fryers quite well.

We still need a target man who can grab some goals up front, Yates is a runner and will chase anything but hes not a 20 goal striker or a target man.

Not with the bench we have. I would give Jaiyesemi a go later on, definately, maybe for Yates.

Great linked play for the goal. Opted to listen to the Home comms. The BBC Humberside comms were quite complementary of it. They are complaining mostly about the lack of quality in the final third for them. They aren't too excitable anyhoo.

Well RW will be happy so far, his choice signing in Yates scores so a positive element there. Yates probably won't be a 20 goal man but 10-15 would be good. Do we think fans will have taken to Yates, you know since he's scored on his debut? I know we are quite polarised on that front. Previously Norris and Austin (no not a Morris Austin) before him scored on their debuts. One we all took too of course the other had more of a tough time winning many over. Which way will it go for Yates?

Hunt looks a good steady full back, like that he can use both feet as well.

Fryers was very calm in possession.  Early days, but looks a big upgrade on recent left backs.

Baudry very assured.  With Broadbent in the squad we actually look quite well set-up at the back now.

Lyden seems like a very solid midfielder - puts his foot in, tracks back well when needed, keeps it simple.

Isgrove looks like a cross between Mullins and Igoe - buzzing around, tracking back, a threat going forward.

Yates came into the game as it stretched and Woolery and Anderson exploited them second half.

Overall we looked good today.  What makes me most satisfied is we didn't have a single player on the pitch who looked like a Div 4 Jobber, ala Dunne or many others who've rocked up in the past couple of seasons.  Plus, nobody looked physically out of it either.  An extra striker on top of that would have me a happy man.  Anderson can stick around if he can play like that - my worry is we've seen the odd game like this in past.  Maybe just keep him transfer listed all season.

Cheers PV. Obviously must be worth a bash.

Thought everyone played well today bar Lyden but no fault of his own, he just didn't actually need to be called upon too many times. When I say didn't play well, I kind of mean in such a team performance he was fairly vacant but that's largely due to other actually doing their job. That's testament to the team as a whole, only one game but if they gel this quick we could be in for a very good season indeed.

Another note, although Scunny were one of the favourites people must remember they are now on a 10 game winless streak, continuing from last season. Seems their fans forgot this stat too. Sometimes a rot can continue and we know there isn't masses of difference in quality between bottom half L1 & RoL2.

Never watched this iplayer thingy before, but really enjoying it ! From what I've seen between the distractions - we're looking really good ! 👍

FFS walked round Chiang mai all day with family doing markets had no idea I could be watching the match 🤯
Great result onwards and upwards.  Isgrove years ago was pure class so if we can keep him fit touch wood then he will be key to success.

I thought Lyden played quite well, he wasn't there to pass it long but broke up the play a few times and made 2 excellent saving tackles inside of our box, one stopped pretty much what would have been an unmarked open goal.

I hope to see us be more fluid in general build-up play. It was a bit scrappy today in that regard, but it was just 1st game of the season. There's a lot more gelling to come. I think we have the talent to unlock teams that are defending.

Just seen the goals and can't stop watching the first. Unbelievable touch by Isgrove and a great finish from Yates. League 2 defenders will be having kittens coming up against that kind of counter attacking football.

Also thought Fryers did brilliantly for the second by not just hoofing it anywhere.

The game on Tuesday is a nuisance.
Do the selection rules still apply?

I'd be tempted to just use the rest of the squad that didn't play yesterday and take the fine.
Didn't Luton do the same a couple of years back and still made the final or semis?

Title: Re: Scunthorpe v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Sunday, August 4, 2019, 10:28:37
Yates took his goal really well, hes a very willing runner but hes not a target man, a role we tried to play yesterday at times.

Hes not strong enough to hold the ball up and doesn't win anything much in the air.

He will score goals if he has a bigger stronger man alongside of him, even a player like Robinson would bring more out of him.

He played pretty much on his own up top yesterday and thats not suiting his game as hes not got enough close control or strength to play that.

On the ground with the ball at his feet though he will do well, he waltzed around the keeper with ease for the goal but when presented with a cross for a header he seemed to duck out of it and the cross clanced off the top of his head.

Very workmanlike performance but he can't play a lone striker very well as Woolery dropped deep a lot and most of the game we played 451 with Woolery and Anderson swapping wide left and the number 10 role, which they did really well and both linked up really well with Fryers in attack.

Anderson played really well as did Lyden and Woolery but my MoM in the end was Baudrey, who was brilliant in the heart of defence.

I wonder if there is a case for iFollow eventually being rolled out (legitimately) for UK based fans?

It might only be a matter of time before all of the VPN's are blocked anyway?
They would probably have to up the price for domestic users but that wouldn't prevent the Accrington chairman from keeling over at the prospect.

The clubs might go for it if the share of the takings was enough to compensate for potential loss of income from the floaters.
A die hard away traveller would be unlikely to be persuaded anyway.
Same for a home ST holder or committed regular.

An essential service provided by the likes of PV should of course be exempt.  :)

I think there is a lot of call especially for us more distant geographically based fans.

Even if each club starts by broadcasting just away fixtures to start with. As long as a decent cut goes to the broadcasting clubs coffers and not the iFollow itself as to partly cover any gate revenue losses.

I love the fact that I can actually see games rather than listening to often poor commentators give their version of events and the listening fans having absolutely no idea at times as to who is even attacking.

Thats why I try and cover as much of the chances/incidents in slightly more detail when they happen so you can at least get a better picture in the mind as to how its developing.

Yes I throw in my own views at times but when there is a goal chance then I prefer to give a breakdown of the action as and when it happens so fans have a better idea that someone just typing "goal" and then the next post says "Anderson".

Most fans reading these posts have no access to radio/video/attending the games so it just gives them an insight as the what is unfolding. Its either the MDT or twitter/adver and in the main these comments tell you little detail, I try to correct this and I am pleased that I can actually help fans who are unable to attend.

So yes I agree with what you are saying WB there is a need, definately.

Its just good that someone physically so far away during most games can actually feel like an attendee with these matches, bringing us distant fans closer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in about 10 years it is the norm. I think most fans would still choose the atmosphere of being there over just watching at home, but there is a lot of potential extra revenue that could be made from it.

Most of what has happened the last two seasons with being able to watch from abroad will have been testing to see 1. How much investment would be needed to create a reliable infrastructure that scales to thousands of fans 2. What interest there is in it.
I am sure iFollow/EFL knew full well every man and his dog would be using VPN’s, but it is an easy way for them to test the waters without causing too much uproar.

My work servers are in Munich so I can VPN there, but I have still only chosen to watch one game through it.

I'll admit to going through the MDT at half & full time even though I'm there.
(Insider knowledge helps! For the sake of completeness it's great).

More often than not the away following is tucked away at one end or in a corner, so it's helpful to get an insight of what's going on at the other end when the view is unclear a lot of the time.

So keep up the good work!

Anyway...back to the game - That first goal was the kind you see scored in the Championship - Utterly clinical. You have to be excited at our prospects for the coming season.

Its good see but it worries me a little that we can only see to really create chances when we're counter attacking. We seemed to have the better of the game yesterday without creating much and teams will figure out that we'll smash them on the counter quickly.

first game, Wellens isn't going to be fooled into thinking we are sorted by relying on the counter attack to score.

it's a great weapon to have though.

Next week will be a test v Carlisle. Not a great deal of attacking threat but two solid halves and like it to sit in.

Talking of watching, has anyone got any recommendations for a vpn to watch?

Your best bet is a dedicated IP which is a brand new IP that only you will use.

I know Nord do it for $70 a year but that is on top of their standard subscription.

This has to be the key development from last year: how to break teams down on open play when they sit back. Quality service from out wide has to help, so Isgrove, DJ and Fryers all contribute to that.

Reading Richie’s comments on Anderson this morning make me wonder if he’s bringing him back into the fold and we’ll end up in the same boat with him as for Conroy. If so, superb management - knowing which players to give a kick, and which to look after. It worked with Conroy. I’m sure there’s more to it than comments in the press, but we all know there is a good player in Anderson. If we get a new striker AND keep him in form, we’re looking good.

Think you're spot on here.... however, it's why I've advocated having some options up front, different types rather than relying on a couple of bodies.  If we are getting crosses in, in you need a certain type of striker to finish them off, doesn't have to be a lump. This has to be the last piece in the recruitment jigsaw.

Because I lost access pre game, here are the Scunthorpe pre match thoughts.

Quote
Just looked at the Swindon squad. I see no reason why we can’t beat them and i’d say we’d be clear favourites on the day. Their pre season began with a game against a side you could be forgiven for thinking was a branch of solicitors.

They have Kaiyne Woolery up front who on his day always to me looks a cut above but those days are few and far between. His scoring record throughout his career is really poor. Let’s hope he starts.

They have signed Mathieu Baudry the ex Donny defender and he’s a decent player. They’ve also signed Zeki Fryers who was available on a free from Barnsley. They also have multiple killer goalkeeper Luke McCormick between the sticks which are both facts. Both the killing of innocent people and he’s Swindon goalkeeper. I make no apologies for merely pointing out factual information although no doubt i’m sure some people will be offended. Even at facts.

Overall looking at our squad and theirs, ours IMO is much better and i think we have had a far more rounded pre season so i actually am expecting us to beat them to be honest. Given we are at home too. It’s opening day though and anything could happen.

They have been a bit of basket case club in recent years have Swindon. Especially since the appointment of Paolo Di Canio as boss about 6 or 7 years back. They’ve had about a thousand managers since although they did give ex Torquay and Cambridge manager Martin Ling another chance in management despite him having had openly admitted to suffering from mental health issues.

This is why i have a soft spot for Swindon, despite paying a killer to play football. I thought that giving Ling a job was amazing and full credit to them. It didn’t work out for Martin sadly but they didn’t judge him and they gave him that opportunity. Not sure many others would have.

Ex Donny stalwart Richie Wellens has taken on the job as manager now and has a lot to prove. He took over at Oldham the other year and started like a house on fire but then struggled and ended up getting the sack with Oldham going down.

Just be great to get the season underway. It seems to have been a long old summer this time around.

I anticipate Swindon finishing around mid table as do the bookies and hopefully they’ll put in a mid table performance on saturday. I’m sure the Swindon fans will travel in their numbers for this, always great support and they’ll make it a good atmosphere.

We often pump Swindon so no reason to suspect we won’t do it again . 4-0

If we are only 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go then Swindle Town will be so ecstatic that they will sit back and take it.

I suspect it’s going to be a little tense to start with however, I expect we’re going to actually win this one, and more importantly, keep a clean sheet. I’m opting for a 2-0 win to Scunthorpe…

This is an absolute home banker…we always beat swindon by at least 3 goals and i see something similar on saturday. Im going for a 3-1 home win and id start the team that started vs lincoln i think we need slater playing next to lund with songo sweeping up infront of the defence.

Swindon sign ex Barnsley winger Lloyd Isgrove on a one year deal. Another player who i think L2 is his level.

Nothing is a home banker with us,we have had a good run with Swindon at home but did with Gillingham and they have outplayed us last two seasons so they might think they are due a win,so don’t get overconfident especially with our recent home record.

Poor from the defence to get caught out by the counter twice, but credit to Swindon for executing it well.

There is no enjoyment in watching such drivel.

That was gash! They looked like they had played a match this morning…Swindon came and did a job and lets face it we didnt make it to difficult at all they didnt let us play and were just overall quicker/sharper than we were

We need someone like swindons number 11 kaiyne woolery who had the pace and power we simply couldnt deal with. I was feeling very optimistic after last weeks performance vs lincoln but today was the complete opposite which i were surprised about but credit to swindon who also surprised me they were worthy of the win and looked very organised and did what they had to do

Not the best of starts today against Swindon, I think that it is fair to think that we were all tipping an home win, but as we proved last season, we cannot win games if we don’t score any goals.

For all those people thinking it was going to be a home banker they have come down to earth with a bang.

Poor performance all round and two terrible or unlucky pieces of defending for their goals.

Whe never looked as if we would score apart from the shot that hit the post and though their goals were breakaways they looked the more threatening.

Referee, gave them some very dubious freekicks but gave little our way unless it was nailed on, including a corner which clearly came off their player.

Swindon are not a top of this table team and they did us over deservedly. Go figure. Very, very disappointed.

Swindon were terrible. With Kaiyne Woolery who made a few runs on the break later on, they had 10 men. He did little else. Jerry Yates was the difference today for Swindon. Work rate phenomenal, doing the work and runs for both himself and on behalf of the bone idle Woolery and showing up for throws and everything and just ran his heart out up there and deserved his goal IMO.

Across the park though Swindon were quite ordinary. Predictable, zero goal threat until we started leaving gaps at the back and there for the taking.

How were Swindon terrible,if we played like they did away from home we would have been over the moon, Woolery and Anderson played very well with the young striker Yates and their defence was excellent and I can only remember their keeper making one save of note plus Lund hit the post, so terrible no.

Swindon came for a point. To keep it tight and hit on the break. Up front, as well as i said Yates did they were pretty workmanlike. Nothing special. They did what they needed to do but barely caused us many scares.

If Swindon are deemed to be a good side then we really do have problems. I take your point though Mick. Perhaps terrible is harsh. Maybe replace that word with ‘organised’ ‘ordinary’ ‘functional’ to be a bit fairer and reflective of their performance but they were a side that didn’t look too difficult to brush aside given a dominant home performance. Which i expected but didn’t get. Fair play to them though. I’ve said they deserved the win.

Yates (who i found out before the game is the son of a girl who used to be in my class at school which was a bit weird soapy tit wank) was superb. Anderson also played well. Not sure how Woolery gets votes for also playing really well. Other than falling over a bit he didn’t do much.

Swindon were a decent, well-organised side. Unfair to criticise them.
We lost either because they have better players than us or they were a particularly tight unit. Maybe a bit of both. Isgrove and Anderson were pretty good.

We had done little to unlock them first half when honours were even and so we took risks and left ourselves open to counter attacks. In many ways, this was a classic away win – nicely taken. We were suckered. Credit to Swindon.

So some of their fans thought we were poor or even terrible? hmmm what does that make you then? :D

I agree, you don't have to be good in L2 you just need some consistancy at scoring more goals than the opposition!

Look at Lincoln.

Bully teams all over the pitch, outmuscle them, be much fitter than them, play to your strengths...which ironically is the strength of the side.

Put high balls into the box at every chance so that your two 6 foot 4 strikers can win headers, also have your three 6 foot 2 midfielders go in and win headers, bully teams, foul them at every chance.

They don't play attacking football, they dont play passing football, they just hoof it and chase the balls down and get it into the box first chance they get...but they have a system that works for them and the players to play that style, pretty much like Becks Cambridge did in the 80s.

It wins them games but not friends, they are consistant, more than almost any other team in the whole league.

They made their own ground a fortress with their seige mentality, playing a WW2 siren when theres a corner to whip up the crowd and the players.

Its not good to watch but it wins them games.

Some teams, us included, didn't enjoy them bullying us/them and give in too easily, a lot of refs at their home games feel bullied by the crowd trying to intimidate them too and that wins them more penalties than they actually should get.

Personally I dont like the way they play football, its messy and dull but it works for them and wins them games but its never pretty. Their manager is also a complete arse as is his brother the assistant.

Lincoln fans love it, they feel its a them and us scenario and it makes them insular with their Winston Churchill "we will repel all invaders" and make the whole club have a fortress "them and us" mentality.

Fair fucks to them, they wont win any friends along the way, I think they could emulate Luton and go straight up again this year.

No, I would hate to watch games like that!

That would be like Div 4 back in the 1970s all over again, I am happy we don't have to watch that sort of poor quality any more. The closest we got was under Macari who built his side of fitness and strong defence, saying that we never bullied teams but could mix it if needed, we still played some amazing football under him, something you cannot ever say about Lincoln, or that Beck team.

Then straight back down. I cannot imagine that succeeding in the championship.

God that was dire, John Trollope, Ken Beamish, shudder at the thought. Lou Mac and his fitness regime won us many matches in the last 15 minutes, cue a statto to reveal otherwise. So I shall caveat that by suggesting it did seem like it. Though I suspect he knew at our level he had to toil with players from the bottom of the barrel and make a silk purse from a sows ear.

That Beamish season was awful, Trollope tried to get us playing football but we had no killer edge.

Macari got the team fit and playing as a unit. Everyone wanted to be part of it and it showed. They had a togetherness I have never seen at Swindon before or since.

Limited by the players available rather than buying a team to play a certain way, Macari got the best out of the side rather than buying a side to play a certain style. A formation fitting the players already here and not players fitting a formation.

Yes we had a few good players like Calderwood and Kamara but in the main he just got the best out of the players we had rather than just getting new players in.

He had the basis of the same team with 8 players there from the previous season in Barnard, Cole, Coyne, Gordon, Henry, Rowland, Ramsey and Hockaday so he also had continuity.

I too remember us winning lots of games with late goals but yes it was probably our poor memory rather than being a fact!

Lincoln, in a strange way, benefitted from years of being dreadful. Suddenly when they started winning, it invigorated the whole city. Their crowds quadrupled. They won't accept its shit football, but then when you've spent 5 years in non league you probably don't care.

I’ve got a lot of time for Lincoln and, to an extent, Luton - cos I hate them.

Can’t deny the power of momentum, though. If Wellens can generate 50% of the energy that Macari did, on and off the pitch, we are on a winner.

Get this club kick started on the pitch, get the stadium revamp laid out for people to see and maybe, just maybe, the good old times will return.

I too remember us winning lots of games with late goals but yes it was probably our poor memory rather than being a fact!

Yes it is.... 9 scored in the last 10 minutes out of 82 for the season, and a few of those were when we already well ahead. The template for success, was more based on scoring early and then seeing it out.... unsurprising as CC was an all time great back there.

PdC employed a similar template especially at fortress CG.... interestingly another 9 in the last 10 out of 75.   His defence was even more parsimonious than Lou's.

What is important is being able to pluck the occasional last gasp winner in a clutch game.... can do marvellous things to morale.  So for example CC's winner v Exeter at Oct 1st, halted a run of three loses and saw us only lose a further 3 all season.  AMc at Cobbs, NYE, saw us then win a further 9 straight.

Interestingly if you look at a fairly mediocre season like last year, we managed 12 out of 59 in the last 10.... suggestive perhaps of chasing games rather than having a winning template, so scoring late goals maybe not a good sign.

I doubt Lincoln's model provides a template for success much beyond L1, and both they and Luton will struggle to maintain the good times (like us) because they don;t really have the infrastructure behind them to sustain it at that the Championship level these days.  Not impossible, but highly improbable.

Luton are moving to new ground, next year 17,500 capacity, could be enough for Div 2.

Boscombe utd are holding their own in the prem with a sub 12.000 capacity.

Quite like the look of Luton's new ground TBH. Some complaints about the design being too basic but it beats an identikit bowl hands down.

More accurately Boscombe Athletic..... Bormuff fans have never been the most vocal, but always quite liked how they'd chant Boscombe, years after ditching the name.  As a kid used to do "trip" in Boscombe, getting the chuffer from Old Town down to Andover onto Southern Region metals.

Took my 3 year old to his first game on Saturday. Dug out my 86/87 SB shirt and made him wear it, which pleased me a lot more than him.  He enjoyed the game, although the pre match slush puppy helped (Good place to have a hyper kid).

I was going to take him as a two month baby to pox (H) in the paint cup sept 16, but it didn’t work out. Then thought I’d wait until he was old enough to remember something meaningful (5+?), but the lure of sunny scunny on opening day of season was too much. Took plenty of pics. Wish I had just one from my first game (87 Wigan), but the camera phone was still 25/30 years away.

My dad gave me two options, his team, or my local team (Brum v Town). My son gets the same choice, but given its 2019 he can have his mums team as well, and if he goes with that, he can retire with 100pc record.

Haven’t posted for a good few years on here, but felt like sharing.

I took my young son (well he was young then) to Charlton away probably more than 20 years ago. Can’t remember the score, but I do recall a couple of local ‘women’ in the pub who were well scarred up. Looked like both had been glassed at sometime.

I told him to be quiet!

Being adequate is usually enough for promotion.  I saw a team that will get promoted if they play like that every week.
