Sounds like we have friendlies lined up against Villa, Everton and Liverpool first teams according to Power on the radio this afternoon

I think Gareth Barry is a good example of the sort of positive attention we've been getting since Power has come in and started using his connections. No clear link between the clubs but turn the head of someone and they want to get involved. Very interesting having 3 Prem club friendlies though. Usually get one or two.

Yep....that sounds right, don't know owt about him, but glad we're still doing the Standing....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdnfhPkcNPI

He does the scouting, was also Kevin MacDonalds agent
Hence the link to Gareth Barry being one of the Towns mystery backers in the past.

Standing is Barrys agent too.

Haha. Fairford Town Tweeted me to encourage a proper away-day atmosphere. I'm tempted to actually organise a load of banners & whatnot. As we won't have many high attendance & high intensity away followings next season, it would be funny to start with the friendlies.

hahahah

I think Fairford could benefit more from a few hundred from Swindon just attending the game and spending some beer tokens in their cosy clubhouse. It's a nice setup. Just right for a balmy summer's evening, leaning on the boundary rail with a pint.

When we took a mixed reserve / youth squad there a couple of years ago, FTFC didn't even charge an admission fee! I suggest they do so this time. We lost 3-1 (I think) with the referee doing a 'Clive Thomas' and blowing the final whistle while the ball was in flight from a Swindon corner. Odd thing to do in a friendly with no consequence to who won if a goal had been scored.

I suggest any further banners, streamers etc should be kept to competitive games. Although it would be good to have given Fenerbache a run for their money when they set off flares and fireworks galore at our friendly against them.

Is there many going to the Supermarine game tomorrow evening? I was there this morning and the pitch looks stunning!
be like playing at home. Should be a good squad out as we dont have much other option, only £5 note to get in too!
They are expecting a fair crowd.  :pint:

I suppose it all depends on whether they include the 'XI' when it's officially announced.

A match against Liverpool will sell really well.

Home games yes
Supermarine is pay on the day so no you won't get points from that, only tickets sold via the club

I would love to be able to go, I did every friendly for 10 years, I think pre season is great.

Saw a lot of good players in friendlies for us on trial that we didn't eventually sign.

Non-League friendlies are my preference because it's cheaper, it's railings football, more social and normally sun soaked irrelevant football.

You don't watch pre-season friendlies for the dazzling displays.

Not to mention some really good players in friendlies we did sign, that then got replaced by total dud lookalike on the first day of the season :)

I'm not moaning we have Premier League teams coming to the CG by the way, its great for those that want to see that kind of thing.

looking forward to Supermarine now..

I feel sorry for the hopeless. It amuses me when an average trialist scores a tap-in and suddenly people who weren't there cry 'sign him up'.

While it is good for the purse strings to play 4 premier teams, is it good for the players or manager to be playing against such quality opposition altogether what is learnt from playing such quality opposition whereby it is expected we will ship a few goals and struggle to score goals

Better than playing non league teams and still getting battered :)

With 17 minutes on the clock, carelessness at the back was punished as Anton Rodgers dwelled on the ball, attempted a Cruyff turn, and was subsequently robbed of possession by Knights, with the Solihull man taking his time before delicately slotting home past Belford to open the scoring. [Adver]

Good effort!

Doesn't sound far off. Its difficult to guage what we might be short of in the managements eyes, thought I read somewhere we were reducing the squad size a bit.

At some point in pre-season we'll have to play a first 11 and things will hopefully settle down.

Bromley is a great case in point, I went and you could see what we were trying to do but it wasn't quite clicking, and not all the pieces were in place.

For instance, Byrne was forced to play on the left and had loads of time on the ball, some lovely touches but, due to being on his weaker side, no end product.

I wasn't panicked but you certainly wouldn't have pegged us as contenders that day. A couple of weeks later, my next match is Scunny on the first day of the season. A few more signings and the difference was incredible.

Still plenty of time to get it together this time

A few thoughts on last night...

The first half was a pretty turgid affair, mistakes at the back gifting them goals.  Regards players from last year, Thompson looked ok, but off his usual performance (given the injury not at all surprising), and if Branco and Rodgers play the majority of games next year we are not troubling the top of the table (however, as occasional bit part players, no probs).  Robert looked good, and worth a one year contract I'd say, good on the ball, can pass it.  The No 11 (Brophy?) had a good start to the half, but faded.  He was often in space and wanted the ball, linked up well, again, may be worth a one year punt, but unless he improves I wouldn't want him as a first team regular.

Second half was much better.  The defence looked a good unit.  BOO looked good out wide, too.  Byrne had a good game...frankly looked head and shoulders about everyone else on the pitch (in either half).  Belford was blameless for the goals, and didn't really have much to do in the way of saves you'd applaud, but dealt with things well.  The beak showed flashes and covered a good amount of ground.

It's a friendly, and it's always nicer to win than lose, but the result doesn't really matter.  We need to cut out defensive errors and, please, someone, just bloody shoot, now and again.

James Brophy from Edgware Town was certainly one.

Played left wing back, a ginge, solid, read the game well and looked to combine with BOO (ahead of him) on the left flank

Don't want to spoil it for Fanzai (or the Adver) but Tuesday will likely see him enter a 1 year contract (with 1 year option)

Why is it necessary to remind people that Kasim was a trialist that couldn't get a game in non-league. Why will it be necessary this time next year to point out that some of this season's trialists (hopefully) went on to be important players for us?

Loans aren't usually sorted until days before the season starts, maybe even a little later. Why should this season be any different?
I meant the ones we have now. Must be obvious those that need to be discarded.

I'm particularly pleased with the centre back the we haven't signed yet. He really brings out the best in Branco.

Any idea why the official STFC report on the game refuses to actually name the triallists that the 'bogey media', and therefore everyone else, knows the name of.

Seems bizarre.

Title: Re: Friendlies

Dunno about that, but there seems to be widespread confusion over whether or not we missed a penalty.

Post by: Costanza on Sunday, July 19, 2015, 11:05:37
Clubs are usually accommodating when it comes to pre-season trialists and less so during mid-season behind closed doors friendlies.

Fanzai don't name the full squad either so I would guess that this falls under Power's apparent quite clear media paranoia.

Dunno about that, but there seems to be widespread confusion over whether or not we missed a penalty.

That is often the case, I would argue a penalty is missed when the taker fails to engage the keeper in any way....a method much loved by England players. However, if the keeper saves the shot, then the correct terminology should be we had a penalty saved.

Title: Re: Friendlies

Think the confusion is whether we were awarded a penalty or not.

I wonder who is going to be our penalty-misser this season

I don't mean that. Some sources say Obika missed a penalty (whatever that would entail), others say there was no penalty awarded.

Taking pens is an odd business....consider Peter Noble, whilst at STFC, he never took a pen, yet when at Burnley later on in his career he scored all 28 pens he ever took, a record for most consecutive pens scored.

I reckon Ty Belford might be quite useful at spot kicks....give him a go I say.

Obika creditably earned a penalty.  He made an aggressive and incisive burst between two Petersfield defenders standing just inside the penalty area and was brought down.

He took the penalty himself if you can call "taking a penalty" passing the ball one yard to the keepers right off a one step run up.  The keeper flopped down on the ball - he'd call it a "save" but I would certainly still call the penalty attempt a "miss".

800 years after Magna Carta, I am prepared to do my bit to preserve an Englishman's right to liberty and free speech in football writing by breaking the conspiracy of silence about the penalty miss

Smith Obika

The window will still have 3 weeks open after the Bradford game, so I suspect that any ins and and outs, are likely to happen after the 8th.

That's a viable side....plus a bench of GK maybe Stephens, Hylton, Marshall, Randall, Rodgers, Cooke and prob one of the trialists.

TBF, he gets all the blame when none of the back 3 were immune from both individual errors and being caught out of position.

He does, however, look like a walking booking most games - but, then again, Thompson had more than his fair share.

The system puts such a lot of pressure on them that I'm not sure any L1 standard CBs would be that much better.

Yeah, both.

Just trying to point out that it isn't just Branco that is to blame. In fact, I'd blame the system more than the players and I can't see how the error-laden games will change much this coming season.

Cooper/Williams couldn't sort it out last season so I have little faith they will do so this.

It's difficult, after all the system got us our highest finish in Div 3 for years, but eventually became so predictable that  limited coaches like Grayson/ Cotterill could easily outwit us.

What needs to happen is for us to develop a bit more flexibility....of course far from easy when playing young inexperienced players.

Waste of a contract as hes been offered a year deal apparently.

Bit harsh to blame Stephens.
I only watched it in real time and it looked like he made a bit of a dogs dinner at the time, I may be harsh I cant say.

Since the 2nd goal Villa have grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

Loads of changes didnt help with the defending communication and tempo since the goal.

After watching that, I am a lot more positive than I thought I would be. We played some pretty good stuff. I think if we get another 2 or 3 players then I can see us having a pretty exciting season. Oh, and sort out the defense!

Robert looks good, seems really comfortable on the ball. And the CB trialist looked decent too. Definatley plenty of positives.

Encouraging but still porous at the back. Very soft goals conceeded - how many is that now in pre-season? Not clinical up top (yet).

Need a few more in, obviously.

Overall not as bad as I was expecting TBH, I feel better about the upcoming season now than I did last week.

0-2 at home to Villa when we outplayed them certainly most of the 2nd half up till the mass substitutions ruined momentum and communication.

Good effort by most players.

Several of the new lads look handy enough, I do like the look of the trialist centre back (Diakite) and Robert especially.

Oh, and sort out the defense!
I didn't see the first goal, but second half our defence looked good.....until Barry and Branco came on (and Branco didn't do much wrong).

I'm more worried about the amount of chances we make and the lack of bite up front. We looked very good on the ball - stroking it around nicely, but nobody looked like scoring a goal.

The first goal was poor defending....Branco looked ok when he came on but didn't excel, unlike Kasim who looked excellent again.

We are not creating enough good chances and when we do we just arent taking them, but we are indeed passing the ball well if a little too much short passing when a more direct pass would be a better option (not "get it forward" but a more incisive pass at times is needed).

It still bothers me that we we try to play out of defence with too many touches in dangerous positions when a hoof into touch would be better, we got away with that a couple of times today when it could easily have been punished.

So Diakate and Fabien Robert looking good and a decent last 25 from the left wing back James Brophy are positives and there may be more.

Both keepers by contrast showed hesitancy and Belford was very lucky his own hesitation on a cross didn't lead to a goal

A little toothless up front too but would like to see Obika get a break his hard work deserves and then go on a little scoring run as it's looking a bit predictable in the final third.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Traore - our stand out player first half I reckon.

Robert, if signed, is going to be one of those players who will thrill and annoy in equal measure.

He is just the kind to try something fancy in the opponents half, lose possession and put us under pressure. Pretty much like Byrne in the Blades 5-5.

The 2 Liverpool lads look real good and I did like Diakite - got those telescopic legs for making last ditch tackles.

All in all a game to ease the fears

OK Mr Power of triallists on show sign up Robert, big Centre Half Unit and maybe Brophy at left back then open your wallet for decent keeper, Capable Centre Half with League 1 know how and then either buy or more likely sort out loans for midfielder with bit of creativity (Kent from Liverpool) and possibly young hungry forward.(Everton or Villa boys who scored would do)
Despite Standing connection ditch Barry, and Jebb who is identikit of Rodgers

Excuse my ignorance with regard to the players but I didn't hear the team sheet nor did I bother to take a look due to there being trialists.

Basically I thought our two CB's were very good. Read balls well and had some pace too them to catch villas fast running front line. The only worry is the black lad didn't like using his left foot.

Another stand out player (apart from no 4) was the small black lad in the middle of the park. Got stuck in everywhere and played some nice simple balls. Impressed.

And our front line. Obika was sharp and strong as usual. As for Smith. Shocking. Didn't look interested at all and has a touch of a rapist.

So basically we need a new keeper. Couple of strikers and a CB for cover.

I know it was only a friendly etc but heres a couple of comments from the Villa forum about us.

Quote
To be fair to Swindon, they look very good considering they've lost two very good players in Gladwin and Luongo. If they play like this every week in the league, they'll go up. We need to do better in the centre of midfield, we're keeping possession fairly well but tend to be second best when competing for loose balls but I'd put that down to fitness more than anything and the fact that Swindon probably have an extra week's worth of fitness

Quote
Swindon look so much more composed on the ball than us

Quote
We're a Premier League side (apparently), why do we look so panicky? This is Swindon ffs.

Quote
That's because Swindon are set up to pressure with intensity.

Quote
Fair play to Swindon, they pressed hard and played the ball on the floor.

The mysterious CB is Diakite - sign him up
The midfielder is Traore - he has signed. Very impressive.

Concur re Smith.

Got to love Obika. Great feet, works his bollocks off and deserves to be first on the team sheet every week.

Hylton, although not doing a great deal, has some really good control and movement. I like him.

Possibly because players have not been allocated squad numbers at this stage.

106 conceded in 42 games.

Richard Eckersely on trial today ex Man Utd, Toronto and Burnley fullback.

Hmm. Will have to take one hell of a pay-cut from his MLS days "His salary was listed at $390,000 US last year and $310,000 this season. The actual number was probably higher, with the club using allocation money to buy it down.

In 2014, it will be even bigger."

Not technically a pay cut as he is a free agent ;) but he has been on bigger wages than we could offer him if he cuts it here.

According to their forum they are playing their full team as it will probably line up first game except for maybe Dawson at CB.

Quote
Albion team to play Swindon Town (ko 3pm):

Myhill; Gardner, McAuley, Lescott, Brunt; McClean, Fletcher ©, Morrison, McManaman; Anichebe, Berahino.

Subs: Rose, Yacob, Ideye, O’Neil, Sessegnon, Melbourne, Smith, Soleman, Wilson.

I see that team lining up against Man City except with Dawson in place for Gardner.

We do seem to let in many late goals as stated above thats when we have made loads of substitutions so no need for majot concern...eyt.

I was massively impressed with Brophy on Tuesday looks a real handful as left wing/wingback, loads of pace and skill and can cross a ball.

We need a solid centre back, a good keeper and one more striker, moving on Smith who just doesn't seem "up for it" with us any more.

Understood. I'm interested to see where our wage currently falls, in comparison to the rest of league one. It seems (maybe this is just hearsay) that its relatively low for a team considered challenging. I'm not saying break structure, just we ought to be paying more than say Southend, Scunny, Fleetwood etc. (We may well be)  Alas we haven't been privvy to any detailed accounts in recent years.

Indeed, we will not know about budgets etc in comparison to other teams for a long time...if ever.

I would say that SOuthend and Scunny would have a larger budget than us though judging by the size of squads etc. Scunny especially so with Henderson recently signing for them and they have not been slow in making new signings this season and last, Madden was said to be on good money at Yeovil before his transfer there.

Either way though we have to live within whatever budget Power deems right and I would say we are in the bottom quarter of the league budget wise.....we will see.

So, in effect, not much has changed except for a few personnel.

Exactly.....I think a lot of our fans don't get how small our budget is.

A core of our own players on sensible wages, then top up with loans, for which hopefully the loaning club covers the lion's share of salary.

Not sure how the youth set up is funded these days....in the recentish past, a lot of it was funded by grants etc....YTS schemes, that sort of thing.

Certainly back in the dark days the early 00's, the bulk of youth development came from grants.   Anyone itk about present practice?

Without identifying the perpetrator, Gardner raged about the incident that will see him miss the start of the new season.

"Thank god that my legs are so strong that scan results have shown there was no leg break or any bone injury.”

No.  For as long as I have been watching, there has never been any correlation between pre-season performance and the season that follows.  Pre-season is experimental in so many ways, which is why I always tend to give it a miss.

I used to think that myself until I read through the stats for pre season wins/losses vs actual league performance and this is the worst pre season results wise that we have had in 20 years.

Actually very often the better the results pre season then often the better the season went afterwards.

I used to think that myself until I read through the stats for pre season wins/losses vs actual league performance and this is the worst pre season results wise that we have had in 20 years.

Actually very often the better the results pre season then often the better the season went afterwards.
Good pre-season results = we’re probably going up
Bad pre-season results = bear no relation to how the season will turn out.

I think that’s how it works  8)

Yeah but you could belittle anything with that view point, for instance "it only a football game who gives a fuck?" I was on a job today and met four Liverpool fan work mates that all got their tickets booked early in the DRS to watch their team and could not not give a fuck about the town, for an old school town fan like me a mass of away fans coming into "our end" used to be unthinkable be it a friendly or not, but I suppose times have changed.

They aren't fans. Likely to be the only football match they attend for quite some time.

No exactly over the moon at the thought of being in a minority in our own end. But I'm also a hypocrite because I'm taking a Liverpool fan from work with me.

Then again, maybe a couple of young Liverpool fans will want to come back once in a while when they've seen live football - maybe not given friendlies are generally shite. Still, worst case better for the club to have seats full.

It'll all be alright again come 8th!

Can you imagine back in the day a packed shivvy road with a load of away fan packed in the middle, back then town fans would had too much respect for the badge and their ground to let away fans take liberties like this, and at most clubs today away fans sill would not dream of taking over the home end on mass, but over the years town's support has gone moist, enjoy the game.

For you not to comprehend why away fans going in to the home end is "taking liberties" shows that you do not understand the tribal nature that is at the core of football, and for whatever sad reason it's you who is clearly baiting me so it would appear that you are the real troll, and I'm not biting so good night. :bye:

I remember when Liverpool were a humble Div 2 side for many years in the late 50's early 60's, they were quite capable of losing to Worcester City in the Cup.

When they went up in 62 I think, I was quite taken by Alf Arrowsmith....great name for a striker, but it wasn't enough for me to stop thinking they'd somehow got lucky on the back of the Beatles, and lacked class.  An opinion confirmed when Shankley showed how to lose disgracefully, when Town turned them over in 1970.

Another great name for the scousers (back when the scousers had scousers in the team) was Brian Kettle in the 70s. Only played a handful of first team matches, but something like 500 for their reserves which must be a world record never to be beaten.

A view from one of the LFC forums:

"Good half from both sides that, easily our best test of the pre-season.

Lucas and Can have been very good, Firmino in snatches excellent and some encouraging play from Benteke.

Think Marko has had a complete 'mare, not looking good for him and I'm bitterly disappointed in the lad to be honest.

Moreno looking quite a threat on the left but as usual being exposed at the back in his absence.

Special mention to Vigouroux who has been excellent."

A few good/interesting quotes from the Liverpool forum...

Quote
This keeper we've loaned them (or given a trial to) is brilliant!

How annoying are the twats in the crowd

Yokels.

Are they cheering every time they complete a pass?  :D

One twat shouting "break his legs" does not a crowd make. I've heard plenty of people just like that at Anfield.

They should all sit down and quietly clap like Anfield. Fuck me fuck knows how many times I've heard the same at Anfield

Our Swindon loan players are doing well so far!

Jordan Williams playing well so far. Vigouroux very decent as well.

We seem to be challenging a bit naively in midfield. Their players are turning and beating us pretty regularly.

Vigouroux and Williams have been good for Swindon too.

Totally different test to yestersay, Swindon playing a different style of play a lot more possesion based. Too easy for us to cut through them at times but lacking the finishing touch.

Best LFC players Firminho, Tex, Can and Vigouroux  ;)

And our 3 loaness are playing well for Swindon.

1-1. Great finish to be fair

Buy Anton Rodgers, BR's boy. He's good!

Cracking goal from Obika, allied to the passing football from both teams the game is certainly giving the fans their money's worth.

Shocking defending. Good goal though.

Best preseason game I have watched Swindon really doing league one proud.

I like the look of this Swindon side, very progressive in possession. Can see why we've sent them 3 of our youth players.

Obviously we have no idea about those posters but it is generally acknowledged within football that the Scousers are pretty knowledgeable and objective and give credit where it's due.

After we drew 2-2 up there in the Prem season for example, they clapped our lads off the pitch (deservedly so). That wasn't patronising, it was deserved.

Indeed, although every time I hears his name mentioned I heard "metal guru" song going through my head.

He looked very assured and commanded his area well and could also come out to challenge attackers, even though he was pretty lucky with his first challenge early on that could easily have been a penalty.

Both Turnbull and Williams on a couple of occassions actually found touch when under pressure.....something none of our defence did last season which cost us a few goals, hopefully they have learnt from last year and we will sometimes whack it into the stands when under pressure instead of playing it out all the time at all costs.

Well I enjoyed that. We look much better with turnbull in the side and the new keeper did himself no harm at all with an assured display. I think the winning goal was very harsh as the ball could have gone anywhere off his glove.

Robert looks classy, the 2 Liverpool lads don't look bad either and we still pass the ball about confidently.

My one slight criticism would be that we don't look that dangerous going forward, but we have been playing much better opponents than we would normally face week in week out. Great finish from Obika and a good move as well.

Overall, if we can get 2/3 more in, I'll be confident we can look to challenge the play-offs this season.

Yes me also. He made one tremendous run down the right wing before falling over.

Is James Dayton a competition winner? I'm not convinced he's a professional footballer.

It will be oh so similar to last season. Moments from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Traore off with tight hamstring - could be OK sooner

So, after all that, with what we have available, how are we likely to line up in a 4-3-3? I've never been a fan of half-arsed pre season games so I've not seen any of this lot in the flesh. Where does Stewart fit in? Or mind-Ottwille likely to be good enough at left back? Are we a bit narrow with a 4-3-3?

OST said...
'it is generally acknowledged within football that the Scousers are pretty knowledgeable'

I thought is was well known that that's just a load of media installed bollocks. Liverpool fans are no more knowledgable than any other set of supporter. You get your good ones, you get your morons. I'm sure this would apply at Anfield, especially these days.

I suppose instead of..."It is generally acknowledged that", I should have really said, "It is my personal opinion that"...which it is. This is something I have found to be true in my personal experience. I don't need the media to tell me what to think. As you rightly say, you get good ones, bad ones, morons etc...

My overriding point was that I didn't find the comments to be  :-X / patronising.

Edit: And to be fair Jan, I gave an example gained from personal experience in my original post of Liverpool fans being that bit more knowledgeable than other fans. I related how they clapped our players off the pitch after they had got a late, arguably undeserved equalizer against us.

At the end of the day, we weren't embarrassed considering they've spent £60m+ on the two strikers. I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't spent £60m on players in our whole history.

It's very hard to judge most of the players that came on in the second half, but I thought the right back that replaced Nate Dog did OK.

We still need a few players in, sooner rather than later.

Title: Re: Friendlies
Post by: Batch on Sunday, August 2, 2015, 18:57:21
Well I actually enjoyed that, given it was a pre-season friendly.

Liverpool did fashion themselves 3 or 4 good scoring opportunities in the first half, and should have taken a couple of them, but with a £60M price tag then it would be slightly concerning for them if they didn't. FWIW Benteke didn't look sharp and Firmino was anonymous.

We did OK. There was a spell on 30 minutes where we didn't let Liverpool touch the ball for ages, very pleasing indeed.

The defence didn't look ropey as such, but we are still overplaying it at times and again nearly got caught out.

But it was going forward that looked the weak link. It wasn't the front two that was the main issue, it was a lack of penetration (oo er) from the midfield. Still, we were playing a reasonable Liverpool team and so no need to panic yet.

The trialist keeper did extremely well indeed. Came out to smother shots, generally handled well and distribution was good. Shame about the blot on the copybook at the end, I turned away convinced he had made an excellent save. I'm peddling the story that he clearly let it in on purpose against his paymasters :) Belford has a bit of a battle on his hands if we sign him.

Thankyou.

People with that sodding half and half scarf in the town end.

Applause for substitutions for Liverpool, in the town end

Both understandable, yeah its the way it is, they've paid to get in whatever.  But what summed up armchair fandom for me was 2 rows in front of me a liverpool fan with a camera out for the whole game zooming in on Liverpool players taking pictures.  Can you actually not watch a match if its not on a tiny screen you tossers?

And then trying to get out being blocked by people taking photos of the liverpool squad.

Its not a day out at the zoo it a sporting event.

Aside from that, good day.

Bentekes and Obika's goals both very classy. Kasim has to take the blame for Bentekes I think, quite where he thought he was going I do not know. Hylton's(was he the number 10 today? Looks a little bit like Byrne from the back) little dink across the box for Obika's says a lot. Think we've got a bloody good strike partnership there.

Ojo was bloody lucky. Think that's why he crossed himself.

When you see quotes like this from Brendan Rodgers I can't help but think that just maybe we have a chance of getting Kent...

"It was a tough game. The young Swindon side are a wonderful team and I've seen this young team play now for the last year or so, how they play is fantastic so I was pleased with my players today," Rodgers said.

"They need to come here and show that they are capable of playing in a very, very good team.

"This is a team and a philosophy here that I've got great admiration for, which is why I want the young players to come here.

"We get lots of opportunities for them to go but we speak with Mark (Cooper), we speak with Lee (Power) and this is a perfect football club for them to come to.

"The idea of football, the courage, the bravery they show to play, there is nobody in the league close to that and they fit that style perfectly."

I know he then says "I don't to transfers in or out", but it's hard to believe he doesn't have a massive say in where players go. I know - I'm probably just pissing in the wind  ::)

Probably 50% of the crowd were Liverpool fans, although I think I heard 1 scouse accent all day. That said, I'm not going to complain at a full house at £15 and potentially 4 Liverpool players on season long loans.

Back to sub 8k crowds on Saturday though.

Crowd on Sat will be a bit of a barometer. Last season we got a few over just 7000, against newly promoted Scunny...I'd imagine Bradford would bring a few more.  However judging from the noises on here over the summer, plenty have given up.

So I'd anticipate something in the region of 6500-7000, anything less would not be a good sign.

Vigouroux had a good came. Anyone criticizing him for the second Liverpool goal is being a bit harsh. If anything he did too well with the shot and took too much energy out of the ball allowing it to dip just under the bar. less of a strong hand on it would have seen it being picked out of the Stratton Bank.

Overall an encouraging performance. Good to see Turnbull back and Williams looks a useful defender. Nice goal by Beaker. Hylton worked hard and had a lovely curling shot well saved in the first half.

Byrne wearing 10 is encouraging also. if he keeps that squad number that will indicate his defensive duties may have been reduced?

A few Liverpool fans around us in the DRS. At one stage, after a poor effort on goal I think it was, one behind us said "And that is why they are League 1!" Soon after, a Liverpool move went tits up and I said to my wife (a bit loudly and with more than a hint of sarcasm maybe) "And that is why they are Premier League!"

Vigouroux could get a song based around Bohemian Rhaposody- Galileo Galileo Galileo Figaro- magnifico o o o o o o o o Oh mama mia etc......

Or not.

Anyone trying to judge attendances by crowds in August is a bit of a dick. Plenty will be on holidays during August, especially those with kids forced to book during school holidays so crowds will be lower during August just because of that. If we're averaging less than 7000 in September then you can get the doom stick out.

Last season we had crowds of fewer than 7000 in September and October....normally there's a fair turn out for first game of the season, because of excitement etc then it tails off a bit.

No need to get abusive, if you wish to make a point far better to do it with the back up of some facts...

Yes, and the extra turnout for the few games is offset by regulars missing some of them because of holidays. It's the same every year. Much like your predictions of imminent doom.

Last season's average attendance was about 600 on average more than the first game's attendance....I'd say that given the fluctuations of form, large crowds for derbys and the odd name you get in Div 3.....a range of + or - 600 or so over the season is about the norm.

Sometimes you'll get one like 02/03....where there was a wave of optimism for the opener, but the season rapidly turned to shit so the average was about 1400 down on the first game.

So given the lack of derbys, big names and top heavy norvern clubs....I reckon Sats attendance will give us a decent indicator for the season.

Not sure who Spalding is but I am guessing the trialist is the Parguayan ex Liverpool centre back.

Edit. its Louis Spalding a youth right back then.

That fella Huth looks very promising - or as promising as anyone can in a friendly. He was the go-to man when it came to bringing the ball out of defence and he hit 2 or 3 Hoddle-esque 50 yard diagonal balls.

Brophy was very lively and saw a lot of the ball in the first half.

The new bloke from Woking is very tidy and will be a big hit I reckon.

2nd half Iandolo played very well - he can expect more game time this season.

All in all an enjoyable aftetnoon. The beer was shite, though.

Villa fans seem to rate him

Lewis Kinsella has announced he is leaving Aston Villa after five years at the club and will be playing his football elsewhere next season.

The 21-year-old left-back has been deemed surplus to requirements and will not be kept on when his contract expires next month and today took to Twitter to reveal the news.

Last night’s defeat against his former club Arsenal in the U21s play-off final was his last game in Villa colours and it brings an end to an action-packed time in the Midlands.

It's not a decision that has gone down too well with the Villa faithful...

Enjoyed that. Seemed to be a decent crowd there too. No 22 would fit in well. Had a good range of passing. can't judge his defensive abilities not that they would be needed. Good to see branco tackling is still industrial. Was impressed with iandolo. A good run-out for all. A decent little club supermarine.

Good performance against limited opposition but you can only beat whats in front of you and they did that comfortably.

Shalborne and reading will provide sterner tests and perhaps by then there will be some more signings made hopefully

Not sure it was 3 5 2. Only Hylton in the 1st half and Obikakaka in the 2nd. There was plenty of support going forward.

Oh, we seem to be working on a new corner routine - 1 player on the goal line the rest on the edge of the box.

They tried it out a few times in the first half - about as successful as our 'normal' routine of completely fucking it up.

We must have the worst corners to goals ratio in the league - well, scoring them anyway!

The pre-highlights adverts were gloriously tin pot, whilst the two blokes who were I assume stood next to the camera saying 'nice' and 'yes' gave a lovely Partridgesque commentary?

I know it's first preseason and all that but was the whole game played at something below walking pace?

It did look from those highlights that the game was indeed played at a very slow pace but you can only beat what is in front of you, I have a feeling that for some of our fans (not aiming this at anyone on here) that a 20-0 win wouldn't have been enough.

Finding a buyer could be tricky - I thought that both he, and Jordan Stewart, we're miles off the standard required.  Lee Power had a better touch when the ball hit him in the crowd.

None of the triallists looked 'sign him up now' quality, although equally I'd want another look or two before discarding.

Nathan and Yasir are a level or two above everyone else, which I guess we knew, but great to see them at such close quarters.

Title: Re: Friendlies

Is it vain to bring up an old post... Maybe, but a year and half (near enough) on... I think some of this still rings true.
