The Opponent:  The Slavetraders

Bristol (English: i/ˈbrɪstəl/, Bristolian: Brizzle, my lurve), is the capital of the West Country, and is perhaps best known for being the city where breasts were invented, but has also enjoyed a rich heritage of many things with self buoyancy including tall ships and slaves. Running through the centre of the city is the River Avon, a waterway filled with cider which for thousands of years has kept the entire population in a state of continuous inebriation allowing them to interbreed sufficiently to create an entirely new sub species of human called "Bristolians". Although Isambard Kingdom Brunel was from Swindon, Bristolians will never admit it, and these days the city is mostly inhabited by students and BBC television presenters. It is said that a name similar to Bristol was first used in reference to a man called "Brizzel" who was involved in and won the world's first ever punch which took place in the area now known as Broadmead in the centre of the city. In 1794 Sir John Roache began his epic task of separating Wales from Bristol entirely with a fruit knife forming what is now known as the Bristol Channel. Today large fans are still employed on both coastlines in an effort to push the two further apart.

As the capital city of the West Country, Bristol became independent from England in 2010 following the general election of David Cameron, when the entire population rose up, took control of government buildings and refused to follow instructions from a man who was obviously such a complete idiot. Tony Robinson (a Stalinist) took command after a coalition government formed around him. Whilst many turn a blind eye to the obvious Stalinist agenda of Tony Robinson, it appears unlikely that his political power will be challenged in the near future.

A fantastic second half by us; superb passing and keeping possession, hit bar twice, numerous shots from distance.  Brizzle had only one chance which they should have scored but was hit over. Wave after wave of attacks, brilliant!

Well, that was fucking brilliant in the extreme.

Just loved those first 15 minutes. Never realised they were such hackers - lucky just to have the one sent off.

TBF I thought City defended superbly with 10 men although we battered them 2nd half.

For the life if me, I couldn't see how another 2000 could have fitted in the CG. The TE was full, the DRS maybe had a few hundred empty seats and the Arkells was heaving.

I'd bet that was Flint and the Thompson Twins. He and Nathan exchanged something at full time, not sure if there was a push there, then he went to shake Louis's hand who basically told him to do one :) Flint went away waving his arms.

As for the match, I didn't see the incident that lead to the sending off. Just that someone was flat out and the lino was flagging. City  really lost their heads in that first 5.

The first half was hard work. City looked decent/solid and frustrated us. We couldn't get into any sort of passing rhythm, and we couldn't get much joy wide as Byrne was extremely well marshalled and we mostly refused to use Tofolo. That said we did put a few good balls in the box from further out. City looked to hit the ball long, and forced a few corners which are always a threat when you have a lanky streak of piss of a #4. We dealt with them quite well. Stephens did OK in his new role too.

Second half we did much, much better. we tried to stretch the game wide, with Gladwin on the right. Byrne went more central. A thunderbolt of a shot cannoned of the bar as we slowly but surely started to push the tiring 10 men back. It wasn't vintage Swindon by any means, but City looked less and less of a threat. Williams added something up front and we went close a couple more times before Smith turned inside his man, kind of bundled past another and scored to send us in delirium.

He was on Bristol comms. He was blatantly rooting for us to win. Constantly praising our players and style of play.

Also, after the match, he was saying how good it was for him to see both teams at the top. He may have included Shitty in that, but him saying that he was pleased we are up there probably didn't go down well, especially not after today's result.

I actually find it really hard to listen the commentary (Swindon Town Player fuck ups aside) - it's too frustrating not being able to see what's happening. I'd rather see/hear the updates on Sky. Dowie was watching the game today and it sounded pretty damned good. It's a shame the adverts were on when we scored.

City seemed to be really riled from kick off. Stephens tugged at Elliot who lashed out with his elbow. Not sure how much contact but you can't do that and it's a red card. For 10 minutes they lost their heads firing into late challenges. First half a bit of a non-event as Byrne was well marked by Bryan and toffolo not used.

Second half we were patient, Byrne moved into centre midfield and Gladwin switched to the right. This change seemed to pay dividends as we started to pin them back. They nearly scored an own goal from a toffolo centre and Byrne smacked the cross bar and Stephens drawing a good save from Fielding practice. And then with 12 to play we got the breakthrough. Smith (whose touch was much improved today) decided to waltz past 3 men and lashed home. Bedlam!!

We were almost then punished as City broke and in a 3 on 1 situation Wilbraham lashed over pathetically.

Big 3 points and fully deserved. Man of the match tricky as nobody for me stood out and nobody had a bad game. Branco was superb on his comeback and Toffolo continues to get better. Massive victory and a very happy journey back to London!

I always visit an opponent's forum after a game to try to gauge the match from a different perspective.

They're very, very bitter. Most of the time opposition fans will talk about the match but not this lot. They are more interested in talking about us (as fans). It's rare that I see such vitriol toward a group of people that just happen to live in another town and/or support an opposing team.

Football was the winner today. What a bunch of shit, hoofball cloggers City were. Passed them off the pitch in the second half as they were running about chasing shadows like a bunch of headless chickens.

...and a nice touch by the Chairman to stand us all a drink in the Merlin at lunch time (while he was there for an interview with Shaun Hodgetts)!  "Thank You"  Mr Power.  In case anyone is wondering, there was no 'Billy Big Bollocks' stuff about it (as there would have been if it had been Jed/Ged).  He just had a quiet word with the bar staff, who went round with a note pad taking people's order and he then quietly left after he had done his interview. :pint:

The condescension from their fans is hilarious.  The bravado of recent days has been replaced by sullen insults and accusations of being 'tinpot'.

But there's a great irony about that.  The delusions of grandeur that many of their fans clearly suffer from originates from being the top team in a large city.  But what they completely fail to acknowledge is that a team with that catchment area - and an owner who habitually funds them to the tune of nearly £¼m per game - has no business playing in Division Three in the first place.

Instead of boasting about how 'big' they are, it should be a source of intense embarrassment to their fans that they play in our division.  Other sides with similar resources, as a rule, play at a higher level.  There's nothing to be proud of; quite the opposite, in fact.  A measure of massive under-achievement that they are where they are.

Bristol City is the remedial big kid who has been kept back a few years at school, and laughs at the other kids in his class because he's bigger than they are.  What he fails to recognise is that the other kids pity him, and that they're laughing back.

If, IF, it is true that Stevens fouled Elliott first, that does not excuse Elliott from lashing out does it? Assuming he did headbutt (or whatever), it's still a red card regardless?

Great victory today against a side who made our old friends Brentford look like choir boys. how they only had 1 sent of f was beyond me. that cunt Wilbraham should have had a straight red and Wagstaff ( who should have seen red last season 9 should have seen red. The first half was a typical derby game. the second half, however, we pissed them and got our just rewards. Great footwork from Smith for the goal ala Maskell at Tranmere.
MOM for me was a close call between Branco and Stephens - who was total shit last week.

I thought Freeman was very good for them, always used the ball well, quick and put in a similar performance to Emmanual-Thomas past year. Wilbraham was also impressive with his back to goal and in the first half, they defended very well as a unit and we didn't threaten their goal.

The second half, in a similar way to the Preston game, was a different story. Smith should have put us one up when well placed 10 yards out, but his scuffed shot was deflected just wide. Fielding was solid - a lot of shots straight at him, and did well under a number of crosses into the box - but was beaten when Byrne's deflected shot hit the underside of the bar. Whilst all this was going on, Wes had very little to do. Smith took his goal superbly, with help from Byrne who was superb when he came into the middle - well done Cooper. I'm not sure anybody called that one before but it worked. Wilbraham should have buried the equaliser, but it wasn't their day. I fully expect that they will be up there. To have Pack, JET, Cunningham et al on the bench is impressive - but as has been mentioned, it is to be expected when they're playing in a division of such comparable mediocrity.

Let's be honest, Luke Freeman joining City was a great disappointment. Looked great in a rubbish Stevenage side.

Big win today and chuffed to bits.  I don't think I've ever seen a football match with a first 10 minutes like it.  They really were lucky not to be down to 9 men.

We struggled to make the extra man count in the first half, but second half was a different story.  Cooper switched it about a bit and Byrne was more effective in the middle.

I don't think Foderingham had a real save to make.

As a side note, why did the Police let the City fans out of the ground and then block them moving forward by the Arkells?  All getting a bit nasty with supporters trying to break through and a few throwing coins etc.  Could have been avoided by keeping them in for 10 minutes.

I think we should all accept the fact that we are just a tin pot club who do not deserve to be on the same pitch as the mighty Bristol City. As Wilbraham rightly says, they would 'definitely' have beaten us with 11 players. As it 'definitely' was not a sending off, we should do the honourable thing and appeal to the FL to have the points awarded to City and they can have their unbeaten run restored. Only then will justice have been done.

I enjoyed the aftermath of the goal from my South Stand vantage point - the City lads losing their head at the front of the Bank was like a scene straight out of Green Street - young chavs, old men - worth the admission price alone. Better still, what prompted this was a few Swindon lads jumping the barrier at the front of the South Stand and celebrating on the touchline with arms raised towards the away end! Superb.

Seems to be Cotterill's game plan was to get a few meaty challenges in early to either try and intimidate our young players or to get them to react and hope for yellows or red.

The fact that it backfired disastrously, for them, is why he is so pissed off.

Whatever effect the red had on the outcome of the game their fuckwit manager must shoulder a good part of the blame.

Their fans seem to think our 'lap of honour' after the game was a sign of how it was our cup final and the fact that they do this after every home game, win, lose or draw, is beyond their comprehension.

Delusions of grandeur on the back of a decade of moderate success by playing in the championship, which lets not forget is the pinnacle of their existence.

Dick waving aside, yes they currently have a couple of thousand more fans than us. According to Wiki their average attendance last season, admittedly a poor season was 10,699. Wow. Fucking massive. If they had a few seasons of mediocrity in league 1 then I'm sure their attendances would be around or below ours.

So my conclusion is that a bit of relative success over a decade has given them a warped view of reality. Much as I hate to say it, the plastics in the other direction have left us behind a bit in terms of club size thanks to Madjetski. Even a redeveloped Ashton Gate will keep the Slave Traders firmly in the same bracket as us.

Shame they have Lansdown to keep funding their promotion charges really.

Had the guy who started the Swindon song in the DRS just before the game sat a couple rows behind me. If we had a couple more like him in the DRS and Arkells the atmosphere would be improved dramatically.

Atmosphere  is usually down to away fans attending, thereby giving home fans a reason to sing.

Even the wrinklies in the Arkells were in voice yesterday - with a sizeable enclave up close and personal to the City fans

Not a big one for reading other team's forums, but OTIB is magnificent today. I have no illusions whatsoever that the Adver comments would have been just as embarrassing if the shoe was on the other foot but it's just lovely, from the people decrying Peacock (personal favourite, the one getting angry about the bbc's gramtical (sic) mistakes) to the people who literally appear to be finding things they can complain to the FA about, from a player being happy that we won to the lights not working in their bogs. Our comms frustrates me, not just as you state about breaking up constantly but you have no idea where the ball is or who has it for 95% of the game, been surprised a few times this season when he shouts "and thats a goal" we have no idea if its for us or against us for a while as we are not even told the ball is going towards either goal.

And then he gets overly excited about a chance for us and it sounds like we have scored when its not. This really fucks me off, yes get excited when we score....say "and its a goal for Swindon/the opposition" straight away, don't let us keep guessing until we hear him say a name of the scorer.

This is why I listen a lot to the opposition commentary, as I did yesterday, again, you get a better picture of what is happening on the pitch and where.

There's a real buzz amongst the players and they would have reacted the same to beating Peterborough if it was them who were top and unbeaten.

Nathan Jones, Brightons assistant manager accidentally ended up in the Town End while the City fans were escorted in. I asked who he was scouting and he said he couldnt tell me. I asked it was Nathan Thompson and he smiled before walking off.

I know that means nothing really, but I'd wager he was looking at a few of our boys and possibly some of City's too.

As for the reaction, bar goading the away fans they reacted the same to beating Preston more or less.

Looking at the red card incident they haven't got a hope in hell with the appeal. The actual incident is off camera so there isn't any decent video footage by the look of it and clearly both the lino and more importantly the ref clearly saw the whole thing.

After an end to a long unbeaten run I'm surprised pizza wasn't thrown about.

I'm surprised they went for Pack ahead of Emmanuel-Thomas once we went ahead.

It was a difficult game for us. Because their fuckwit Captain got sent off, they spent the majority of the game with 10 men defending. It was always going to be difficult to break them down, although we managed it on quite a few occasions. How the brizzle fans can say, with such certainty, that had it stayed 11 V 11 they would've won is beyond me; the game would've been completely different.
Looking forward to going to Ashton Gate next year where hopefully we'll have our strongest side available and they manage to keep all their players on the pitch for the whole game.
All the talk about whether the game was a derby, or those (From both sides) feigning disinterest about the other club is a bit cringeworthy. We may not be each others biggest rivals but there is always an edge when we meet. I'm not sure OTIB will have multiple threads on any other team in League One when they're coming up to play them.

I was in the DRS.  The block of seats in the Arkells Stand nearest to the TE had very few people in it.  There were also lots of empty seats in the area closest to the away fans block.  The front section of the away fans area was virtually empty.  The   back section of the Bank nearest to the DRS was also almost empty.  There was loads of space in the TE on the side nearest the Arkells.


It's a far cry from the 32000 that we managed (once) in days gone by.  It was more fun in those days!  Go for a pee at half time?  Yeah, right.  Good luck with that!   :(

First game I've been to this season - plastic little fucker aint I  :toocool:

Good to be back though. Great atmosphere where we were in the Town End, Smiths goal had shades of Parkin's against QPR for me, complete with beserk celebrations to boot. lost it for a few seconds, at least until that horrible crystal palace song kicked in, booming out around the ground. Disgusted to see people clapping along to it, even in the town end  :suicide: who can I speak to at the club about this, its bloody awful and I'm sure in no small part responsible for our reduced attendances recently.

As for the football, beautiful stuff. So impressed by our patient passing game and build up play thought Stevens was class, Byrne second half was imperious. Always looking to drive forwards. Every player looks comfortable on the ball which is something we've not been able to say since, fuck knows when.

nice to see city turned up in numbers for their cup final, although couldn't really hear them from the town end, cooper said they made a good racket so i'll take his word for it. Loved the fist pumping from branco at the end, proper riled the home crowd up. long way to go yet but yesterday felt like something could be in the air with this team. 352 in divvy three, spraying the ball around like we're fucking Barcelona or Bristol city...

Didn't realise how close Flint was to scoring an own goal when he JUST turned Toffo's cross wide. Turned out to be a massive interception cos Smith was lurking behind him and probably would have socred. Smith got his own back in the end leaving Flint on his arse as the 1st of 3 defenders he beat for his goal. Def agree with the previous poster, that goal had shades of Super Sam against QPR. Did anybody listening to the radio hear if he mentioned it during the commentary at all??

Great result and great to see a game with some passion on and off the pitch. 

Sending off was 100% right.  I kept watching the pair of them after Stephens barged him off the ball as it was obvious that something was going to happen.  As soon as the linesman flagged he was always going to get a red.  As said in an earlier post, Stephens could easily have got a yellow.

You could see why City were unbeaten, very well organised and even in the second half when we got completely on top they were mainly limiting us to long range efforts. 

Fair play to Cooper, recognised that Byrne was getting nothing from their fullback and switched him to middle in second half which I thought was the key factor in enabling us to dominate the rest of the game.

I know managers can't be expected to be measured and impartial 30 mins after the game but Cotterill really is a complete knob.  I can't believe they will appeal once they've thought about it - if there is no decent footage it won't be overturned and if any emerges then he'll get an increased ban. 

Of the Picture of Toffolo celebrating at the red, some poor aggrieved soul on OTIB says it is the most sickening thing they've seen in football.

I thought Wilbraham had quite a decent game, but a big shift in.

Stressful start to the afternoon for me when I thought I'd left early to nip to the bike shop before the match but noticed just as I passed Mannington roundabout (after being stuck in the fucking traffic for nearly half an hour) that My season ticket wasn't in my wallet and in fact on the kitchen top at home. Promptly span round back home to get there at half 2. Mercifully, the traffic through moredon, Cheney and the Bruce Street bridges wasn't nearly as bad as going the other way through town.

Parked up and sprinted down Flemming Way (to the amusement of those sat in the awful traffic no doubt) and got to the Ground to hear the town end baying for blood, getting to the top of the concourse stairs in the DRS in time to give Elliott a cheerio wave down the tunnel.

Enjoyed the day a lot more from that moment on after all the shenanigans. Great match, great result. Even sweeter to know that the Shitty fans really, really don't care about it at all. And Cotterill acting like a pubescent teenager, fucking hilarious. Always had him down as an odious cunt, but not remembering why. Completely clear now, what a giant tool.

Thought everyone put a great shift in. Stevens was superb in midfield, Branco brilliant. Nuttier than squirrel shit but love his enthusiasm.

Bristol were decent in the first half considering they were down to 10. Stayed compact and organised, very hard to play through. You could see they were playing for a draw from the 10th minute onwards. But so glad to see us be patient and persistent, gently turning the screw as they tired and gaps opened up. The winner was inevitable in the end. With 11 v 11 I reckon it could have been 3-3 or something rediculous like that, it would have been a very open game.

My point was that it's your first game of the season, and you're spouting off like you own the place, ripping into people who have a different opinion than you.

I'm OK if you don't like something about your matchday experience, but don't put others down because they don't have the same strong opinions as you.

In the past, you'd turn up to football and expect nothing else. The reality today is that people expect a bit more than just a game. You don't have to agree with it, but the club has to get the next generation of people coming to the club. That includes families, who probably want a different experience than you. A little tune after a goal doesn't hurt anyone, even you.

Only three turnstiles were open and there wasn't enough security to check practically everyone who was trying to get in. In the end they opened the large gates at the side and it became a free-for-all. Luckily I'd just got in by that point as it started to get uncomfortable.

We've had a few in previous years- I seem to remember Julian Bennett getting booked for it playing for Forest, I don't think he was even on the pitch at the time. And I think Casper Ankegren may have thrown a bottle back into the Town End when playing for Leeds- that was a bit naughty mind.

To be fair the Stratton Bank (sp) is a shithole for facilities. Given a) its used about twice a season on average? b) its an away stand frankly its not that surprising.

Personally I think Power is a legend for condemning their Gaffer's clearly unprofessional, childish and abusive way of reacting to the loss. Granted what Thompson did could be seen as unprofessional, but there are two sets of standards between how a player can present himself and a manager...

The one thing that the video footage does seem to show clearly, is that the ref is actively watching what is going on from the moment Stephens and Elliott initially clash. In fact, he is already pointing at them at about the point that Stephens goes down.  Very unlikely to get that overturned.

Great to read Lee Power’s comments in the adver about how he celebrated the goal on Saturday, shows a real commitment to the club and I hope he can finally shake off the shadow of the loathsome Jed in the forthcoming appeal case.

As for the game itself there were talking points in abundance and having taken a quick look at the OTIB site, City fans have talked them to death, which is somewhat surprising consider “we mean nothing to them”. My take (for what it is worth) on some of their views....

It was our Cup final.
As we are not actually going to play in a cup final this season then a home league match against local rivals who are top of the league and unbeaten does become the biggest game of the season (so far), if that can be classed as a “cup final” then OK City fans, it was ours.

Players did a lap of honour and celebrated like we had won the league.
The players did what they have done on numerous occasions before when they have won a big match, we’ve seen it before and I hope we’ll see it a few more times this season.

They’ll finish top anyway and beat us at Ashton Gate.
Not going to argue with that as it’s a distinct possibility, but then the chances are we’ll be weakened in the January transfer window and they will strengthen, if they don’t finish above us then it will be a huge failure on their part.

Toffolo and Thompson were a “disgrace”.
So Thompson celebrated the final whistle by jumping in the air and fist pumping whilst facing the City fans, ok so it was a little inflammatory and he shouldn’t have done it but a keeper running the length of the pitch to get involved is every bit as “disgraceful” as Nathan’s actions so let’s call that 1-1 on inflammatory  behaviour.
As for Toffolo celebrating the red card, I’d agree that was out of order but he’s a young lad who has played only a handful of competitive matches, it was a silly and immature reaction but he can learn from it. If we are looking for examples of immaturity then how about an experienced striker losing his cool in the opening minute and a manager ranting like a petulant teenager?

I can imagine the Stratton Bank facilities left a lot to be desired so I’m prepared to give City fans that one! Problem is when every penny counts, investing in a part of the ground that gets used once, maybe twice in a season is probably quite low on the priority list.

I've not contributed anything to any of the discussion yet. Watching from afar I've been both shocked and entertained by the reaction of City fans, amused by the reaction of their manager, and embarrassed by a number of comments from Town fans. At the end of the day, what matters most is summed up below. City had a man sent off - if it gets rescinded I'll be amazed. We had 4 times as many shots as them, 9 times as many shots on target, and crucially scored one more goal. 3 points. Top 2. Bring on Posh.

Yep. You would think that by sending Elliott off, the ref was awarding us the 3 points and we didn't have to do anything whatsoever to win the game. Some one should remind them that it is actually possible to win a game with 10 men. I've seen us do it several times over the years. We were inches away from beating Brentford with 9 men back in the Hoddle era. We did actually beat Plymouth 3-0 with 9 men when Ossie was in charge (albeit they were down to 10).

A severe case of sour grapes if ever I saw one. But then, they should be beating 'teams like Swindon', so I suppose it's understandable.

It is clear now that we aren't afraid to go long when Wes has the ball at feet. Against Rochdale we would refuse to go long and Wes would always look to play to feet but on Saturday we looked to Smith and Obika more, which I think is going to have to be what we do, mix it up a bit. I see nothing wrong with this, means we aren't 1 dimensional and easy to play against.

Completely agree. We were way too predictable. Then Wes would 9 times out of 10 kick the ball out to Byrne who, let's be honest, isn't the tallest of chaps. Granted he can take a ball down like it's nobodies business, but if the defender gets a head to it every time it does get a bit redundant.

At least if Wes is given options of passing out (preferred), hitting up to Byrne or hitting it up to the strikers I'm more than happy with the variation on his distribution  :sherlock:.

The video evidence was inconclusive - as anyone who has seen it could confirm. Yet he claimed that he'd watched it 4 times and it proved that Elliot was innocent. He also admitted he hadn't seen the incident apart from on the video so how he can claim that it is unjust shows what a prick he is. Pity a game wasn't added on to the ban to really rub it in.....

Wade Elliott isn't stupid, he knew what he was doing and was possibly hoping for a reaction similar to that of Alex Pritchard's at Ashton Gate last season when he cynically hacked him down.

Stephens is all over Elliott so if he tries to sneak a little bit of contact on him then he might have hoped for Stephens to lash out like Pritchard did.

Not sure them all being so worked up over it is going to help, especially their players and manager. Given how wound up Cotterill was after the game, I doubt he was much use to them during the game and especially at half time. Focussing on how they were hard done by and going out for the next game with a head full of steam, isn't necessarily going to do them any favours.

I think the delusions of grandeur thing is relatively recent.  I always thought of BCFC (1982 Ltd.) as being more or less on a par as us when I started going nearly 25 years ago...and never really sensed that they felt differently then.

He then double checked with the lino, who was virtually in line with the incident, and then sent off Elliott.

Just because the cameras didn't pick up the incident, it doesn't mean it didn't happen, and the referee saw it and deemed it a sending off offence. End of.

The appeal wasn't dismissed on a technicality - it was dismissed because there was no video evidence to say the officials made a mistake.

Just saw a City fan in the office and said to him that I told him the red card wouldn't be overturned.

He said that the ref didn't see it because Wilbraham blocked the refs view and that he was only sent off on the advice of the linesman, who missed Stephens' elbow on Elliott.

Whilst I think most of us will agree Stephens was lucky not to get booked for part in the incident, no-one has ever said Stephens should've gone as well.

I had to shake my head and just walk away, otherwise I was going to ask if there was a shortage of cooking oil in Brizzle...For all the City fans chips on their shoulders !!
