Title: Cider
Post by: Sippo on Saturday, March 8, 2014, 21:42:24
So this weekend has started off quite nice with the weather.

Soon it will be 'cider' season. I can't stand the theory of ice with cider. But I am looking for Montano cider online. It is going to be the next be 'drink'. It's from Italy and is the cider equivalent of peroni apparently.

What, average at best but over priced for those daft enough to think its fashionable and will pay over the odds for it?

Thatchers motherfucking gold.

Or the yellow if you're partial to a dry. They also do the old red diesel/Cheddar Valley/Ched Red.

Kingston Black, Rich's and various other small cider producers do a cracking selection.

You've got Cornish Rattler too, nice, if overpriced now.

It would appear to be a contradictory statement! ;)

Rough scrumpy is the only cider I will drink fresh from the barrel. 7% and less than 80p a pint and contains no additives or fizz (rats do not count as additives).

Perry's is on my doorstep and probably within 5 miles there are 12 different farms and cider mills from me so its rude not to.

Some local pubs even sell it down here, albeit 3 times the price you pay from the barrel.

In fact, any proper cider. None of this 'cidre' bollocks, thank you.

Henry Westons + Special Brew= the devil's snakebite.

Not that I would recommend anyone drink Snakebite. Horrible stuff.

Nemo's Cider rankings

Gurt lush: Stowford, Thatcher's Old Rascal
Very Pleasant: All other Thatchers, Aspall (lots of that in London) Weston's
Alright if there's not better: Magners, Bulmers, that one from Aldi test isn't too bad- Taurus?
I'd rather drink wine: Blackthorn, Strongbow
Get off moi land: Stella Cidre, Carling Cider

Stowford better than gold? No.

It's interesting that apart from that one the actual fruit content of the ciders gets lower as you head down the list.

Gaymer's cider might be popular with gays...can you still get Olde English? Used to be popular headbanging drink in the late 60's early 70's..

Yes, you can, normally sold in clubs because Gaymers likes selling it to places like that where it's the only option.

A pre-lunch 4 pack of scrumpy jack is usually the recipe for a good afternoon. One of the better canned ciders.

I love cider. They get some cracking guest ones in wetherspoons pubs.
Old Rosie is lovely and strong as fuck. Black dragon,a Welsh cider I also like and is another strong one at 7.5%
Old rascal I used to buy in 2l bottles from asda but they don't do it anymore.
I think magners is about the best stuff from a can. That along with stowfords is what I drink on a session. Lawn offy does 24 cans of stowfords for £22.

Wasn't all that great if I'm honest. Not terrible, but a bit ho hum.

The Sheppy's was better but also nothing special. Both fell short of Thatcher's Gold, which I use as a bit of a Cider watermark for its ubiquity and excellence.

The Old Rascal may be left for tomorrow, but will no doubt be the best of them.

A bit ho-hum - glad its not just me. It always seems a bit flat/stale.

Stale seems a bit harsh, I can see flat though, it's not got much depth of flavour. Cheaper ciders (available on tap from all bad pubs) would mask that by carbonating the shit out of it but as they haven't, it just ends up being pretty plain.

Had a very nice pint of Thistly Cross Whisky Cask cider at the Chippenham beer festival last night. A good end of evening type cider, really nice hint of whisky, definitely not your normal cider, not sure I'd drink it all night as it tastes sweet.  At 6.9% I'm not sure I could even if I wanted to anyway. I recommend trying it if you see it about.

Spot of thread necromancy.

Inch's have been advertising heavily and (importantly) was cheap in Tesco so I decided to buy one to give it a try. Surprisingly terrible - I notice from the back it's a product of Bulmers. Suspect it's made from their leftovers, as it's concentrated apple juice and added sugar.

I'm not against a sweet cider on a sunny day but this just tastes a bit shit tbh.

And you negate the risk of spending 2 hours+ of your life surrounded by absolute fannies. Although this might just be a London thing, as in my experience people seemed to think they were invisible when they would block other people's view. Many people literally had zero awareness that they might be getting in the way. I suspect where I live now is probably better but haven't really sourced a decent bar to watch sport yet so home will do.

I watched the Scotland game round a mates’s house who had absolutely no idea about football. Mrs Audrey spent some time trying, and failing, to explain the offside rule.

He ended up supporting Scotland! He’s coming to the bar this evening so I’ll be trying to persuade him to come as ‘German looking’ as he can.

On the whole I mainly agree with you. Aside from when Swindon are on TV and there is a group of us that meetup in a pub. The play-off away leg at Sheffield United was a magic time with just a small group of amiable Town fans. That certainly would have beaten sitting at home that night!
