Striker - 23. Scored a few on loan this season in League Two, and previously in League Two or Conference.

Interesting.

He's 6ft 4 so a target-man I guess.

@BBCWiltshire: FOOTBALL: #stfc have signed #charlton striker Michael Smith for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £200k #swindon

Speaking of Charlie Austin, I wonder if he's an outside chance to make the WC squad in the summer. We're not exactly stocked with strikers...should he manage to keep scoring for QPR, then he must come into the list, then there's always injuries.

It's a short list....Rooney, Sturridge, Wellbeck, Defoe, Lambert, poss Carroll, then outside bets....poss Berahino, I'd have Austin in there. Any others?

Steve Bull went to the World Cup in 1990 as a second tier player.

Don't think Charlie will go this time but if he makes the step up to the Prem and keeps banging them in (as he has at every level he's played at) he will be hard to ignore, if that Hull move had gone ahead and he'd had a good season, there would be a clamour for him I think.

So with two signings in for around  £600,000 if the Smith fee is to be believed and Luongo...where does that leave us in respect of paying our debts as seen on the audit.?
I mean if i was Rooney i would be more than a bit pissed off that the club cant honor his contract but can spend this kind of money on two players.
Surely dont look good f it does go to court?

Not sure about Smith to be honest but only time will tell....oh and just to say we have now probably spent more on two players than PDC did in his whole time here :D...not accounting for wages i grant you and the odd tribunal.

It's not that we owe Rooney money, it's that we are disputing we owe him anything as we do not think the agreement / contract / whatever was valid. I don't see what the problem is seeing as Rooney has a new club and has been with them since July, so it's not like he's low on cash. I guess he just wanted the massive wage he was promised by PDC / Spencer / Wray / Insert Name.

I had never seen this before and there is some great stats on it.

http://thewashbag.com/2013/03/05/paolo-di-canios-vital-statistics/

However the one pertinent to your comment Leefer is -

10 players that Di Canio signed had their contracts paid up early – Atiku, Chibbochi, Comazzi, Connell, Esajas, Kerrouche, Lanzano, Magera, Risser and J Smith which I presume cost a pretty penny. Collins cost 200k and Troy about 150k I think so I think we are far from what Di Canio frittered away.

Title: Re: Michael Smith

There's a significant difference between being unable to pay somebody and being unwilling to. I don't think the club have ever claimed they are unable to pay Rooney.

Nugent scores mostly from pens though....he's also tainted by already having a cap provided by the Wally with the Brolly. When I say mostly this season it's 8 pens from 17 goals.

Nugent scores mostly from pens though....he's also tainted by already having a cap provided by the Wally with the Brolly. When I say mostly this season it's 8 pens from 17 goals.

Think Charlie has his fair share of pens this season too. If it was a straight choice between the two though I'd take Charlie every day of the week though Reg.

Not sure about all comp's but not too far off in the league. 13 from their 31 goals this season. I only know this as I had a little wager on him being top scorer in the league this year.

I thought that we wanted to sign him, but couldn't afford the fee.

I think we decided against signing him for some other reason.

I remember it was a very acrimonious affair because the chairman of his parent club (Southend?) basically said something along the lines that he was glad to get rid of Revell, thinking at the time we would be signing him permanently. Then, of course, we change our minds about signing him leaving revell to go back knowing what his Chairman had said. We did nowt wrong really but Southend right royally fucked him about.

Yeah I don't think I would have Revell'd in that particular signing. You never knew what you were gonna get with Revell!

We did, when he was clean through at Carlisle and wellied it into the north sea, I think that may have put people off.

I mean if i was Rooney i would be more than a bit pissed off that the club cant honor his contract but can spend this kind of money on two players.

I think it's more complicated than that. As far as I can see there cannot have been any "contract" with Rooney, other than the loan deal, at the time of his signing, because he was still contracted to Birmingham. League rules make it kind of illegal to sign a contract with a player while their registration is held by another club. There couldn't even have been one of those "pre-contract agreement" things, because we signed him in the summer, nearly a year before the contract was due to lapse, and you can't sign one of those until the last six months of your contract.

There might have been a clause in the loan agreement expressing the intention to offer a contract when AR was in a position to sign one, but it's debatable what the legal status of such a clause might be. I guess that's the line that the club are taking, and I can't blame them.

Same fella who thinks we have to pay Shrewsbury if TAH reaches the magic 15. Still you wouldn't read the comments appended to Morshead's stuff, for any reason other than a giggle....would you?

I really liked the self righteous indignation from the early posters that a newspaper should ever print a transfer rumour before the deal was signed and details sent to the FA.

Jesus there's an entire industry based on little else. The BBC run a transfer rumours column throughout the season, even when the window is closed.

The fellah who claimed it was all a smokescreen from the board to keep the fans on side hasn't been back since the player himself tweeted his goodbyes to his Charlton mates at lunchtime I see.

Seems a bit odd the club still haven't confirmed it even though the player has.

Unless of course as sutton said we get a double deal at some point!

As I said in the match day thread, I get the feeling this fella could have the potential of a Sam Parkin, he certainly finished the second like a Parkin at his best.

Very early days but I think he could be a decent addition to the squad.  Optimistic.
