Title: Has Woy got the bollocks to . . .
Post by: kerry red on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 17:22:22
Drop Rooney for Carroll

Drop Milner and Young for Walcott and the Ox

All 3 absolutely dire

Disagreee with two of the three. Rooney scored and was 'feeling' his way back into the action, why drop one of the best players in the world when he could turn it on at any point? Milner is integral to the system of the team, protects some of Johnson's frailties and allows Gerrard to go forward and do his stuff, got unwarranted stick IMO, wasnt too bad. Although I do agree that Young was shite and offered little going forward nor defensively. But again, he could turn it on at any moment to produce a goal... I'd swap Young for Chamberlain and that's it.

Yes, let's play our tallest striker and drop the two wingers who can cross in favour of two that favour running at players. That makes perfect sense.

I would like to think so. I agree that those 3 were utterly piss poor.

The chance Rooney missed is just the sort of chance I hope to see Collins snapping up for us this season and if he was to miss one like that I dare say PDC would be hooking him off in double quick time.

England's most effective crosser is Gerrard.

Unless of course after such a miss he scores the winner....ala Rooney.

Rooney may well be world class playing for Man Utd but he sure aint playing for England - and I dont mean just the last game.

And if Young has put a decent cross in during the 3 games I must have popped out for a piss

I think Roy has the bollocks to not bow to pressure and drop players just because the media and/or nobodies on an internet forum think its the right thing to do.

To be fair to Hodgson he's got most thinks about right so far.

He is deliberately making us play just well enough to get through so that nobody gets too excited about our chances.

So I take it you are one happy England bunny and nothing needs changing - even though England's best period of play so far was the last 20-30 minutes against Sweden with Carroll and Walcott both on

England have won 2, drawn 1 and topped the group.

Results business - so if I were into the national side, i'd be happy yes.

Hodgson likes to keep it tight, and let the speed merchants like Walcott and Chamerlain on later when they are playing against tired defenders, so there will be no changes except for injury.

Yep, as proved by the Spanish press and fans, who are slagging off their manager after drawing the other day.

Rooney hadn't played for 37 days, yet some people expected him to come in and put a great performance showing no rust at all.

The 80 odd minutes he played will have done him the world of good ahead of Sunday.

Carroll ahead of Rooney? Jesus wept!

Welbeck was just as poor

No way drop Rooney, he scored and is finding his way back. Should improve for that. I'd pick Carroll, but in palce of Welbeck.
I can see why Woy goes with Milner and Young. Milner in particular protects the full back well and does put in a shift. I'm just not sure that will be enough to see us past Italy.

So far Hodgson has taken a squad which most people considered piss poor to the final eight of a major competition. Whilst it hasn't been particularly attractive to watch, it's certainly been effective.

I think I'll let Roy do what the fuck he wants.

Of course not, although it does puzzle me sometimes that we all think we know better than the bloke who sees them everyday in training and has been in professional football for donkey's years.

He's already exceeded my expectations.

Milner, three strikes and out for me.

Gutted that young was picked for last game but he put in some great crosses.

Rooney did look rusty but I rate him higher than Wellbeck.

We must play better technical teams (mostly all that are left) the English way.....100 mph and get it up em...So Carroll fits the bill and MUST play.

I've stood next to you at a game. Therefore I know your opinion is worthless.

If people didn't have different opinions there would be no need for forums.

It certainly doesn't stop some on here spouting what STFC players should be got shot of and who should play instead of someone else.

Nothing wrong with - it's what forums are for

Opinions are like arseholes: we've all got one. My opinion is that we should put our faith in the bloke that has got us, unbeaten, to the last eight, not question whether he's got the 'courage' to do what some people want him to do.
FWIW, I think it takes a lot more bollocks to do what you think is right.

But to be fair when Woy asked before the Ukraine game if he was going to start with Rooney he acually said:

On paper based on Premier League performance maybe.

On results in an England shirt?

Striker consistancy is one of the most significant England team weaknesses in recent years. Alan Shearer is probably the last striker whose international performance lived up to his League reputation.

Isn't that what people were crying out for before the tournament? Stop picking the old guard and pick people based on their form? In which case, Rooney would be in the team.

On results in an England shirt?

Euro 2004: Rooney breaks into the team, scores goals.
WC 2006: Rushed back from injury, not really given a chance.
Euro 2008: Err, yeah.
WC 2010: Worst England performance in recent history, hard to expect Rooney to shine.4

Yeah, let's drop him.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not necessarily saying he shouldn't be in the squad as his League stats scream out for him to be picked BUT, in my opinion, he doesn't perform as significantly or consistantly in the National team as he does for Man Ure. I reckon the Carroll/ Wellbeck combo was a better choice to start with Rooney coming on later as a replacement for either l, to ease him back into playing. Hodgson would then be able to get a good look at Rooney in competetive International football and base his decision making on that.

Of course, I could just be a prize cunt talking out of his arse but then, what make me any different to anyone else here :D

That was just Roy playing the game. He wanted to pick him and public opinion had fuck all to do with it, he just turned it in to a jokey comment. There was no need for him to argue Rooney's case so he didn't.

Got to admit Roy seems the most intelligent manager we've had in a while. He's done a pretty good job of convincing everyone that we've over achieved by winning the group, which will lessen the blow if we lose to Italy. Clever stuff.

I'd agree with that.

Just how does Rooney 'turn it on'? He's never going to run a game - although he is well capable of scoring a great goal or 2.

Gazza was a player who could 'turn it on' - not Wayne I'm afraid.

All very well saying it was his first game - but who's fault was that - the petulent scouser
