Title: Gillingham Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Friday, April 20, 2012, 23:05:02
Can we finally win the sodding league please?!

We seem to be on the verge of winning it every week!

I seriously think that we'll at least secure promotion today, Paolo will have fired a rocket up them this week after "Beer-gate"

So a 2-0 win.
Ritchie to show us what we've been missing with a wonder goal and Holmes to seal himself a contract with us for next year!

COYR!

Good lord.  Looking back Ive used the 'there' instead of 'their'.  Im so ashamed.  No nerves, just a day when hopefully I can wander past our oxford support sound engineer, rather casually with a sign on my back saying ' League 2 champions 2012, enjoy league one you yellow scum'.  Is it too much to hope?

An interesting game...think we've won once there in about 60 years, and that was a shit hot Macari side. A point is possible, but unlikely...the players know promotion and hence bonuses are in the bag..so are getting ready for the beach. It's a good test of di Canio's mettle...if he can conjure up a win after this week's fiasco, then he can be considered the poor man's "special one"

Perspicaciously put. But let's not forget the 'backlash factor'. We're pretty good at turning it on after a lackluster performance and if promotion/league title isn't motivation enough then the wrath of Paolo and a torn up contract should be.

Away win, win, win.

Bye bye League 2  :bye:

Looks as though the fall out from "beergate" hasn't ended. Fods, Devera, Rooney & Cox all dropped according to the adver.
Narrow 1-0 defeat, however, a draw for Turkey will see us over the line!

Dare I say it but if the Adver is correct then is Paolo becoming a little precious here? Can't see us winning with all this crap lingering and resonating through the team. In essence we're just feeding our rivals ammunition and confidence. Keep it in-house, deal with it fairly and quickly, don't let these issues create a life of their own. It was never personal against the manager but he's treating it as such and I don't think there's any need to treat our players like schoolchildren when they've performed so stoically all season. If Wes misses out on celebrating promotion with the fans, after the contribution he has made, then it's a huge shame. Not sure it's fair on the fans who travel, let alone the player himself.

God knows I love Paolo and welcome his commitment, style and work ethic. But there's a fine line between being driven and being draconian.

I predict a drab 0-0, we get soaked and a terrible atmosphere. But at least promotion will be wrapped up.

I pray these rumors are not true. Paolo said we were moving on and that needs to happen. When fans spend a lot of money on time and traveling and a lot of us have money on us to win the league and we want to be champions anyway, we deserve better than watching a makeshift team.

I've been to Priestfield twice and seen us lose 5-0 and 3-0. I really hope today is different, but I just don't see us winning.

PDC needs to be big here and play Wes. He deserves to be part of the celebration no matter what has happened this week, to allow Smith in to the fold now would be pathetic! The title is not won yet.

Come on PDC dont punish the fans for the second time in a week!

To be honest I would treat this incident more harshly than the initial drinking session...  These players stood back and let their team mates take the rap for something they were involved in.  The whole squad need to be left in no doubt that failing to comply with club rules will result in disciplinary action and that failing to man up to breaking those rules ( or effectively lying to the manager) will result in heavier punishment.

we have promotion in the bag - It will hurt the players more than the club to not get a champions medal. effective managers have to be seen to be consistent regardless of the circumstances - treating these in a lesser manner than the 5 who apologised would be wrong and paolo knows that.

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but do we actually know they were specifically told not to go out Sat? I agree they shouldn't anyway. But being told specifically not to go out then doing it and him being annoyed they did went out but nothing specific being mentioned are two different things. I find it weird that they would go out in Swindon where lots of fans would see them when they were specifically not told too. Im not standing up for them, and it sounds like they drank way too much. A quiet meal and a few drinks somewhere not in the limelight would have been fine. Im just wondering if the players have outright gone against him or if its more he is just angry they went out even though its not specifically against any rules.

I hope this whole drinking incident is forgotten about today and the players go out fired up with a point to prove.

I'm hoping Connell starts as well as McEverly and Foderingham.  It is too much of a risk to take playing an understrength team 2 games in a row.  If we lose today the pressure will be huge next week and the gap at the top could be down to 2 points.

Staying positive however I think we will win 1-0  COYR

Fingers crossed the weather holds out as I don't fancy getting wet today!

We have a squad for a reason - so the second tier players can step up when needed.  Lack of discipline last season contributed to one of the worst seasons in our history (and, sadly, that's not an exaggeration).  PDC has my suppport.

Think we need to lay off Smithy a bit here ?

I want Wes in goal - no doubt....However Smithy has been here all season on the fringes, hasn't moaned, hasn't complained and has done a reasonable job when called upon (JPT etc...)

The whole squad has contributed - Smithy included...

If Wes misses out on celebrating though it would be massively unfair IMO - I know he/they might have done something out of order, but if we look at the whole season he (and others) don't deserve to miss out on this for one stupid incident

That seems wrong to me - but PDC ay well have put himself in an impossible situation here.  If he bends and plays Wes he looks weak on discipline (after his interview), but if he drops him and we miss promotion today he looks weak on player selection

Rock and a hard place ?

Spot on.  To suggest that Smithy has not contributed completely misses the point about the squad system.  We all want promotion, but to suggest that we're somehow handing the game to Gillingham by putting Smithy in goal is (a) wrong; and (b) insulting to one of our longer serving players.

Good luck to the lads today.

I wish all of this late-night drinking malarkey could have been dealt with better somehow (I offer no alternatives).

My hope is that PDC appreciates that the title would be great for the Town as a whole and that includes the fanbase. I have total faith in players like Phil Smith but we need are strongest XI starting as long as the silverware is not ours.

Whilst i'll be dissapointed if Wes doesn't play aren't people jumping the gun a bit here and claiming PDC has got it wrong before a ball is even kicked? I'd be a little bit worried with smith in goal but who is to say he won't play a blinder like he did at Charlton a few years back? I'm not fussed about the other 3. Devera is decent but we have Macca and Flint. Rooney has been shite lately and Cox never plays anyway. No big loss with them 3.

It's not about which players will not play. Smith will be adequate. It's about the whole way this could affect morale. It's about travelling to Gillingham as fans and knowing our strongest team won't play. Again.

Badly handled, including flint and the h youth team.

Pdc is not bigger than the club. If there was nothing at stake this would be a non issue. But there is. That's my last word.

Caddis
Macca
Flint
McKevely

Ritchie
Smith
Ferry
Holmes

Benson
Connell

I'd argue that's probably our strongest team bar Wes. Wouldn't be surprised to see that line up today either. All this not our strongest team lark is a bit baffling.

This is my biggest concern too, but morale would surely suffer more if PDC didn't show the same discipline to all the players. I know it would in my work if my boss didn't treat all the staff the same.

This Smith bashing is out of order... he's a perfectly capable L2 'keeper, never solely responsible for our early season form, and doing what a reserve 'keeper should - playing when your first choice is unavailable. Wow.

I agree entirely.

The players know the rules, written or unspoken. Not only did they break them, as I said in another post, but they did it at a time when the boss was away mourning the death of his mother.

He comes back to find out players have been on a bender. Thoughtless, disrespectful, immature, unprofessional, cost us the game at the Shots on Tuesday. I could go on. Understandably Paolo hits the roof. What were they and you expecting?

Then after the dust has apparently settled, four more are identified has to having taken part in this incident but did not come forward to admit it, appologise, take any punishment and move on.

They may have been fined by Paolo, we don't know. Wes is in superb form but he is not immune form prosecution so to speak. As for the others it does not matter if they are injured, can't play due to contractual agreements or are not currently in the squad. They have broken the rules and been outed. Let that be a lesson. There will at some time be repercussions.

I still feel that there could be a blood bath in the closed season. If that comes to pass there could be some eyebrows raised as to who goes. Attitude will play as big a part as ability in determining who goes and who stays.

We will win today.

The culture of the football club is the most important thing.

Blame the players, not PDC.

He is doing what everyone was crying out for last year, except now we are winning people want it swept under the carpet.

Issues have to be dealt head on now, or else they will re-appear next season.

At the end of the day Paolo can do what he wants. He's got us 89 points this season so I don't think he can be slated for team selection. We were hardly a shambles before Wes arrived, yes he's a good keeper but Phil Smith is more than capable for this level. Saying that he'll probably drop a clanger today.

I haven't got a clue who will play. i haven't got a clue how we'll play - will we have a negative or positive reaction. I haven't got a clue what the score will be. I haven't got a clue who was involved last Sturday. i haven't got a clue if they were under orders or not.
What I do know is that I'm behind PdC all the way.
I'm on my way to Pikeyland in about half an hour.
I'll take a point.

We will win today.
totally agree, if i had just lost my mother ,flown back to italy to sort things out, timeing it all around my job,to find out that they had been on the piss after i had asked them not to,i would be totally hacked off .you cant fault his passion and commitment to the town.He still has a lot to learn about management but he has my full support on this ,upto now he's done a good job, the buzz is back around the Town we are going up and if he is here next season we will go up again."ONWARD AND UPWARDS"" COME ON YOU TOWN"

Agree, plenty of talent in there. Thinking about the bench... Kennedy, Risser, Murray, Gabilondo, and De Vita? Would be great for Gabi to make the comeback of comebacks and show the form he had in away games early in the season!

Where has it actually stated that they were told not to go out and disobeyed orders?

I just think that it's a shame that such a big game is again over shadowed by this.

Poor Phil Smith is under significant pressure.  If he makes one mistake, fingers will be pointed.

PDC is 100% correct to punish these players, I'd rather lose one or two games than a long term ethos be destroyed.
Still have faith that we will win today anyways. I'm backing Smithy have a Charlton-esque performance. We'll win promotion today one way or the other, I'm sure of it.

Spot on. We've won numerous League One games with Smith between the sticks, despite having Michael Rose in the defence. To suggest all hope of a victory is gone because he's playing is pathetic and insulting.

I think Di Canio needs a holiday - he needs to get away from football the way he has been behaving recently is fine when you are on the verge of promotion but would cause big problems in a hard season where survival was the issue. Get a grip. Paolo drops the keeper, 2 injured players and one guy who hasn't played for weeks and all of a sudden it's the end of the world? The only noticeable change will be between the sticks, and there are much worse keepers than Smith out there.

I'll also point out that Gills last home game was against Dagenham. And they lost.

I see this as going one of 2 ways. The dressing room becomes an utter shambles and we stumble to promotion.

Or, somehow this makes our players more determined than ever to put on a good show and win the league in style.

Either way, STFC will win the league, at the moment I am not sure which one unfortunately. Today's game and reaction of the players, is going to be massive.

We need 5 points to mathematically guarantee the title. Our GD means we should only need 4 points. And if Shrews draw one of their last three games, then we only need to pick up 2 points. I'm not worried about whether we'll win the league - I'm much more worried about being there to see it, as I can't make Port Vale!

Serious amount of over reaction on here.  The first time in weeks we have been able to put out our 1st choice 10 (probably) and Smith a quality reserve GK at this level, and would probably be 1st choice at 75% of the teams in this league.

Though I am disappointed that this is all dragging on at a bad time and like Batch would be fucked off if this cost us the title, anyone that doesn't know that PDC has higher principles than most must have been hiding out in Purton for the past 8 months.

Simple fact is, if that team plays, our 11 is better than their 11.  It is just a case of them turning up and making their quality count.

Some of the meltdown on here needs to calm the fuck down.

3-2, Ritchie, Connell and Flint with the winner.

Ignoring the Wes thing, that sort of formation looks workable. 4 creative midfielders (and Risser) all capable of getting in the box and making stuff happen. With Benson up top it would look slightly better, but i reckon this could work.

I agree, it looks a good sort of formation, we had no option but to rest an injured Benson, it is Bostocks natural position, a good friend of mine has been watching him at Spurs since he was a really young lad and says he is a really classy player when played in a role he likes just behind the striker/s....that is his natural position so fingers crossed for the lad.

Agreed Tans - it could be really good. Solid back four, ritchie back, bostock given chance to make a name. Connell might be a little isolated though.

Like the look of that team. Ritchie, Ferry, Holmes and Bostock -  ridiculous amount of technical ability for a League 2 side. Put the off-the-field stuff out the way at 3 o clock, hopefully we can get the point we need.

Benson has been carrying an injury for a while, and did take a heavy knock on Tuesday.

Obviously Wes would be in our strongest team, but that's been done enough.

Most interesting thing is the change of formation, unless Bostock is somehow playing as a striker.

Could see the formation working, although odd that Paolo has been a strict 4-4-2 man up to this point.

Thats my only concern, Benson would do the job well but we can't risk him with his neck injury not healing so we have no other option up front.

Connell is not as good at holding the ball up as Benson, but I do think he does it surprisingly well.

Post by: Cibocchi_Is_God on Saturday, April 21, 2012, 13:24:00
I actually quite like the look of that team. Hopefully it means we'll be forced to keep the ball on the deck to create our chances rather than relying on 'grinding' them out as we quite often do away. I reckon Bostock will push further up for goal kicks ect so we dont lose out massively in the height department with no Benson.

Got a really good feeling about today, it just seems like it has been written in the stars for us to win promotion at Gillingham!

Not a surprise though, he obviously got it wrong with Aden, & we know he is man enough to own up when he's wrong.

Looks like quite a stong line up (apart from wes) like a formation too. It would be nice to see some quality from bostock, he must have so much unrealised potential, this must be his last opportunity in a Swindon shirt if it fails to impress.

TBH it's his first opportunity. He shouldn't have came on at Wembley, can't make your debut at Wembley and it showed.

Agreed, he hasn't had an opportunity since being thrown on at Wembley, which makes you wonder how much Paolo rates him. Will be interesting to see how he does.  Personally I would have preferred to see Smith (Jon) instead of Risser, he's done nothing in the last few games.

It seems that he isn't favoured by PdC hence why he's had little chance since wembley. I just don't see him getting another chance after this one.

In some respects he is the sort of player we need to be after, bags of unrealised potential and last chance saloon - it could be the making of the player. I suspect he has no future at spurs, so must be playing for his football career

Fucking hell i'm really starting to worry we're going to fuck 1st place up now.

I made a comment following the Aldershot game on Tuesday night that the whole drinking thing and subsequent team changes could cost us the title.  I was told to get a fucking grip........  ;D

If we're all honest, we've not been playing well for weeks and are literally dragging ourselves across the finish line.  A few months ago I'd have been confident we'd turn it round after going behind, recently however that hasn't been the case.  Even less likely now fucking Murray has just come on.  I have to say I'm at a complete loss with that decision.

FFS why play 60 minutes with a midget up front by himself and leave yourself no options later in the game.Ever since the Transfer deadline we've looked fairly toothless as a strikeforce and sending Bodin to Crewe and keeping Connell here and treating him like dogshit makes no sense at all. We're paying good money to Tehoue and Kerrouche so why can't we have at least one of them on the bench

Seems like another knee jerk reaction from PDC after Connell has missed a chance, has happened a number of times.  Doesn't seem to do the same with Murray though, who has been consistently shit for weeks.

As it stands we're still promoted, but what a damp squib it will be.

As good as PDC has been for us, he's pissing me off a bit at the moment if I'm honest.

I guess dropping such an important player as Wes has cost us the game. Looks like I'm going to Bradford.

We could still go up today.Sure we might not win the league, but getting out of it is the main thing.

Really? I would have thought just as we were catching the top 3 would have been a worse time, leaving us with ground to make up. If there's any time to have a bad patch, I would argue it's when you're already (all but) promoted.

We're all talking about the Championship though aren't we? We've been promoted for the last couple of games.

Shrewsbury have the momentum compared to us. And our poor run of form saw us lose at Wembley.

Trying to put a positive spin on things when I looked at the fixtures for the top teams a month or so ago both this and Aldershot stuck out as being really tough games whilst the other sides had a better run in to us. In some ways we were always going to find both difficult. I still think Shrewsbury will fuck up in one of their last 2 games. If we can beat Vale....if....

I know promotion was the key target this season, but not winning the league would be a huge anti-climax.

At the beginning of the season I'd have taken promotion via third place on goal difference.  However having been top for a while and 7 points clear this time last weekend, it would be massively disappointing.

However, Shrews are now drawing and we've just pulled one back.  10 mins to get an equaliser and it's firmly back in our hands.

Fantastic to have promotion confirmed finally. Let's go on and win the league now.

Quick word for the boo boys:

You might not agree with every decision he makes but I think our performances overall this season have earned Paolo the benefit of the doubt. We've gone back up at the first opportunity, look like we should win just our 3rd ever league title, and had a club record winning run. By any measure it has been a very successful season, just with a bit of a stuttering start and finish. No one likes to lose, but luckily for us defeats have been few and far between this season. Onwards and upwards.

That's fine, I understand that but it just seems to me that some people are never happy and wish to bring the mood down.

No. They said that they had interviewed everyone who was there. I managed to note down details from all of them. So you can see that DeVita was there although he didnt play and wasnt on the bench.

Not at all. I am the last person who would want to do that and I don't think that's a fair comment as I am generally more positive than most by nature. I can't help feeling disappointed about a poor performance and a 3-1 defeat.

As I have a few beers this evening though, today will become a distant memory and I will reflect on what an utterly fantastic season it has been and the fact that it has quite literally never been a better time to be a Town fan. 8)

What's so exciting about Notts County?  In many ways L1 next season will be less interesting than L2 this...loads of horrible norvern clubs...no derbys, and southern trips to characterless grounds like Yeovil and ColU again.

Preston will be interesting as they're the current longest since we last played them side.

I was told, a few weeks ago, it was to do with the Holmes transfer, and also something to do with the fact his face was used for next seasons season tickets.
I didn't post it at the time, because I didn't know for definate, and would have got some stick on here.
Part of me also didn't believe it myself, but obviously should have.

Yeah Bormuff is always a decent away day...would be nice early season, but tends to get shunted to a dodgy midweek or something due to security concerns.

PDC:
- Finally we are up
- Happy for fans, players and board
- Much work done on the pitch and behind the scenes
- Happy inside. Can be proud as what achieved as a manager
- Father pushed him to manager in England. So its a special season for him
- If perform like today then it will be difficult to win league
- Celebrate by having tomorrow off, but dont have to get drunk
- Cant live moment if you are drunk. Everything gets blurry
- This is not part of our professional culture
- We went up. Four go up. PDC wants to be called the champions
- Made comments about others dont have understanding of what is the best team as they do not see behind scenes.
- Comment on goalkeeping. At Aldershot, a baby could have saved one of those shots
- Commented on Macca being 'blurry' in the week
- Alan Connell up front. After 5 mins he could see that he wasnt on form. Brought on Murray and could have taken him off after 2 mins!
- 45 days ago he was close to resigning his contract. Wouldn't say why. But, his promise to fans, board and players counted more than a contract so he stayed. If he had, Town would not have stayed at top, but would have gone to playoffs and easily lost
- We are half way. Still wants to get to Championship. He will sit down with board and see what their plan is. Hope that board and PDC can stick with their promises
- Even with a good plan next year it will be tough not to languish in mid table

- First 20 we played ok. Goal killed us a bit and never really got into game

- Complete turn around from last year
- Long hard season
- Got just rewards
- Last few games havent been great
- Never had a normal season at Swindon (Either up or down)
- Thought we were going to get an equaliser at 2-1
- Didnt know the scores in the other games until the end
- Great chance to beat P Vale and win the league
- Has been a difficult week. Didnt like being spoken about for wrong reasons. Realised they were in wrong. Put it behind them and move on.

This is the 4th promotion I've known and, while I'm not going to pretend it matches the achievement of making it to the Premiership in 1992/93, it's right up there with 1995/96 and 2006/07.  Very proud tonight.  OK, we limped over the line rather than charging over it - but that was a luxury we could afford.  Over the course of the season, we have deserved this.

To the Players
Put the last week behind you.  You have done us proud.  We will remember this.

To Paolo
You did this.  There were people out there who wanted to write you off last summer; and you have silenced them.  Your father and mother would have been so proud of what you have achieved here.  A great start, but I am glad that you appreciate that the job is only half done.  This club has not been in the Championship now for 13 years...and that needs to be rectified.  We all have faith now that you can take us there.  Grazie.

I agree totally, this is my 6th promotion (7th if you count 1990 PO) and it is as good as any except the 85-86 season under Macari (your first Championship is always the best!) and getting into the Premier league.

Despite the shit result, I couldn't be happier. We are up and five games in, I would have settled for that. Paolo has given us the season we all hoped for. The players understand their responsibilities to the club and know that if they fuck up, they don't play. This has developed a fantastic attitude that was so sorely lacking last season. We're up and the title is ours next weekend. Let's celebrate in style!

Fods was there saw him outside the turnstiles trying to get in.Next time I saw him he was sat behind the goal with Kennedy,Benson and Devita who were all in club tracksuits Fodders was in normal gear-significant?No sign of Rooney tho'.
After leaving the ground, walked round the corner of the away end saw a side gate open, strolled through it,found myself on the pitch, walked slowly past all the police and stewards, went right up to Di Canio, shook hands and exchanged man hugs right in front of the stand. He thanked me I thanked him and then walked off again-unbelievable!
As for the game-we spent pretty much all of the first 25 minutes in their half.As soon as they scored we may as well have gone home.Bostock MOTM for me,everyone else really poor today especially disappointing were Ritchie and Holmes for me.
Still its over 44 games and we have been the best side,no question.Just hope the classless club and their classless fans stay down.Oh and Police blocking our way because we didnt have tickets even when we explained we had to pick them up at the turnstiles.Took them 20 minutes to get confirmation from GFC that we were telling the truth.Ramshackle poxy club.

Just back to my 6 star travelodge.

For 30 minutes we looked good and then a classic set piece sucker punch fucked us....from then on it was rat shit!

I don't know about the players being drunk? Di Canio must be pissed and on drugs to drag off Connell and send on murray....what a mad decision! No strength and no reading of the game at all.

I hated the rest of the match with the exception of the great goal.....there were other opportunities but we fucked them up.

Players dropped.....silly IMO....a hefty fine would of been enough at this stage of the season...fuck me PDC dropped a few bollocks in his time...I hope we don't pay the price.

News came through and there it is....we are up.....done and dusted!

Falling over the line? dang right...but that table don't lie and we are in divvy 1 next season because we earned it we the luxury of great results earlier in the season.

PDC came in and restored our faith in a club that...lets face it...fucked us over last season.
The players couldn't be bothered, the managers were utterly useless and the board...well they brought in Hart didn't they!?
All that is a now distant memory and well behind us.
Still in with a chance of the title but i would of taken second or third at kick off in August...
Roll on next week....i was planning on watching my old club in the wilts junior cup final but sorry boys its too important.

Nothing will compare to reaching the prem but today was great and i was proud to be there. My daughter is still singing Paolo Di Canio, even now..

fucking fantastic!

Well, that was good fun!

The game was pretty awful, apart from the first 20 we were rather shite. Bostock and McCormack were the only players who did anyhting right. The first goal pretty much killed us off. Great run and finish by Macca, would love to see him do it more often.

Quite frankly though, could not give a shit about the result, we are up and it's a pretty good feeling. Glad Accrington got an equaliser, hopefully we can wrap the title up next week, the players should be able to play without any pressure.

Loved the celebrations at the end!

That was pretty much Aldershot part 2 apaert from this time I could pick a MOM - Bostock. For the first hour he was a class above and then was anonymous for the last 30. We were complete and utter dogshite again. Holmes was a passenger who we should let go. Caddis's free kicks were shite. Murray was in all the wrong positions. on the pitch thnigs are going very, very wrong. The Pikeys were pretty crap but could have had 5.
McCormack's goal was absolute class - the only bright spot during the game.
I think we've got a lot of work to do before next season - maybe the drinking incident and our recent performances have done us a favour and given us ( manager, players and fans ) the kick up the arse and the wake up call we might well need.

ive played in a couple of Wilts junior cup finals one being on the Town Ground. A 7pm KO next Saturday would of worked very well especially for the Flash. :)

On the match itself, I think people are maybe being a bit too harsh. We were class in the first 20 minutes, and Gills barely got out of their half. Unfortunately, we couldn't take any of our chances. Impossible to say if Connell should have scored one of them from where we were, but Paolo seemed pretty sure he should so on came Murray, who was worse - wrong positions, and only one or two particularly good moments throughout the game.

On Phil Smith, you could arguably blame the first goal on him. But to be honest, if was a looping flicked header to the back post. Had he been on his line, he still might not have saved it. The second he had no chance, beautiful finish whether the guy meant it or not. And how anybody can blame Phil Smith for their penalty is beyond me. Makes no sense at all.

Bostock was probably the most impressive today. Won the ball, ran at players and really looked a threat. My only two criticisms would be that his passing was occasionally poor, and he went down far too easily. Think Drogba, only thinner.

McCormack had a decent game, as did Caddis. Unfortunately the rest of the team were playing at around 6.5 out of 10. It wasn't dreadful by any stretch of the imagination, but we really are better than that. The scoreline was perhaps a tad harsh on us - we had more shots on target after all - but we didn't really deserve much from the game.

I guess that sounds slightly negative, but nowehere near the disaster some have made it out to be. Hopefully morale will pick up now, we'll pack out the CG (really gutted I can't go) and we'll get the three points to win the league!

- 45 days ago he was close to resigning his contract. Wouldn't say why. But, his promise to fans, board and players counted more than a contract so he stayed. If he had, Town would not have stayed at top, but would have gone to playoffs and easily lost

Bit arrogant, but possibly true?

Was Fodderingham interviewed on the pitch today?

Would of thought that most of the squad would be there including wes :hmmm:

Just back....this situation with Wes is interesting/worrying. He was not part of the squad and didn't travel with them. He had to blag his way into the ground and sat with Benson and other non-playing squad members.

After, when the players realised that we'd got promoted and started celebrating, he stayed in the stands right in front of them and after a few minutes left. Don't know if he wasn't supposed to be there but I would have thought he would of and should of been part of the celebrations regardless of what has happened in the past week. :hmmm:

A few questions in my mind from reading the various reports.

Murray - why?  What does PdC see in him?  I have given him the benefit of the doubt for most of the time that he has been here but I really fail to see what he adds.  On Tuesday we would have been no worse off playing with 10.  Sounds like he was no better today.

Bostock - given that we've not played particularly well in any game since he arrived, why has is taken until today for him to get any game-time in the league?  Is there any realistic chance of signing him for next season?

Paolo's threatened resignation - did he really say 45 days ago rather than 4 to 5 days?  That seems rather precise and takes us back to the D&R match.  What would that have been about?  4 to 5 days I could understand.  Over the last couple of weeks I've become increasingly worried that he might up and leave.  He's obviously under a lot of stress at the moment and hopefully the support shown to him by the Board and the fans will go a long way to making him want to stay when he considers everything in a calmer moment.

Paolo says in the same interview that the best team was played today and the fans don't know what happens in training and behind the scenes etc.

He admitted Murray was as shit and Bostock was our best player. Sounds like Bostock will play as second striker next week too.

He definitely said one month and then changed it to 45 days ago.

Bostock said in his interview that he was pleased to play for 90 mins because he hasn't played that much. Reports on here suggested that he was good for 60 mins then anonymous thereafter. It may simply be that he hasn't been fit enough to play.

Awful performance, but a good day in the end.  The Murray / Connell substitution was a bad decision granted, but to the brainless mongs who chanted 'you don't know what you're doing' to Paolo - really?  Our league position and goal difference would suggest otherwise.

Took the shine off a good day for me, especially as when I was walking out the same group were singing his name.  Some lad had a go at them and good on him.

Shame Wes didn't join in with the celebrations either.  He deserved to.  It was great to see how much it meant to the players though.  The product of much hard work.

On today's game

-We dominated until they scored but after that we were poor
-Bostock and McCormack were the only players who played well imo
-The Connell substitution was disappointing but the people booing are idiots. We're top of the league.
-Good turnout and atmosphere from our lot, the gillingham fans were disappointing.
-Great scenes at the end, made up for the poor performance.

Roll on League 1! The promised land!

Fitton's comments on the commentary were great:

Didn't know he was commentating but I thought he looked a bit subdued at the end too. Did come on to the pitch with JW and NW but slipped away quietly. Whilst JW quite rightly taking the plaudits for what he's done this season it was a shame (in my opinion and others may disagree) that Fitton appears to be mainly remembered for last seasons issues rather than the dark days he led us away from.

I have to agree, I love Fitton for what he inspired with the takeover and for all his hard work in securing the safety of the club but as a commentator....Jesus wept.

He was saying that Paolo was wrong in playing Connell as the lone striker, said that in Paolos position he would take him off......Paolo takes off Connell and he professes his love for Connell and that Paolo was wrong in taking him off...WTF????

Rubbish performance yesterday, but the scenes at the end more than made up for it!!!!Hope we can return to The Fortress CG next week and complete the job in front of our own fans!

Great turn out by the fans, made a great atmosphere at The Livingstone(?), then the ground, Train on the way home before getting back to Victoria and taking over some pub outside....I felt like a celebrity the amount of flashes I saw from people in London & the tourists as we sang our hearts out celebrating promotion....another top effort from the best fans in the league!

My predicition of winning the league at Gills didn't come true, but promotion is secured! McCormack and Bostock were excellent today, and why has it taken so long for Bostock to get a game after Wembley?...Connell substitution was bizarre, as I don't rate Murray at all, oh well onwards to Port Vale and let's enjoy the build up and sell out the ground!!!
