Tough game tonight, would be good to see a performance that suggests we can hack it against big, physical sides who are going to get stuck in to us.This has tended to be our achilles heel for quite some time.Draw wouldn't be the end of the world,1-1 with Connell to open his account for us.

I have a bad feeling about tonight. Heart says a win to get back on track but head says a 1-0 defeat.

Apparently D and R have a long injury list so really this is a winnable game.

They have a number of players out injured, and according to Di Canio they're a much smaller team than Cheltenham. Hopefully that will help us to stamp a bit more authority on the game. I'll go for a satisfactory yet unglamorous 2-1 win.

Forgot about this. A Dagenham fan I follow on Twitter was moaning about having nine first team players out at the weekend so let's hope they stay injured for tonight. Still reckon we'll lose mind, and save our best for Sunday.

The game at Daggers last year was one of the lowest points of a god-awful season, and tonight can't possibly be any worse than that so I'm quite looking forward to it.

Don't think it will be a great game, but a 2-0 win to calm some people's early season jitters.

Score?  My prediction league placing after the first two games demonstrates that I really haven't got a clue.

The number of times you hear the old long injury list pre match set up.....of course it's bollocks, they'll still put out a useful outfit.  Last season Still was doing the old Swindon are a massive club thing....which worked very nicely for him.

I worry about Jon Nurse....there's something of the Chicken George Lawrence about him.

Don't forget Daggers lost at home on Saturday to the not-so-mighty AFC Wimbledon 2-0 so would really hope we would be turning over sides of this level.  That said, we're not the "big club" some make us out to be, and the team is still finding it's feet.

1-1, Connell.

Dunno. We're still lightweight upfront, but at least we know there's goal scoring possibility from midfield. Connell will score as well at some point, although he needs the right player to partner him.

I'll go for 0-2, more in hope than expectation.

Yeah, people have been saying that for 9 years now since the days of thisis. He's not Richard Alpert - even if was a pre-pubescent 12 year old (talk about slow? pre-pubescent at 12?) then he'd be 21 now!

Hard one to call at the moment.  A lot will depend on who our starting 11 are. Whilst individually De Vita & Bodin are decent players both are too similar in style of play. They are both pretty lightweight too and as D & R have a few bruisers in the team i can't see either of them getting a sniff of goal.

D & R will have done their homework on Ritchie too so I'm hoping Esajas starts because D & R won't be able to handle the attack from both flanks of Ritchie & Esajas.

I'll make my prediction later

A good jumper is important....it suggests security....a lot of ladies these days carry emotional baggage, and firstly need to feel that you're not a rapist. Mohair jumpers particularly good.

I can picture your chat up technique Reg.

Suave as you like buying a glass of Chardonnay for the lady and introducing yourself;

'Hi there, the name is Smeeton, Reginald Smeeton'. (kiss on the back of the hand) 'Can I firstly put you at ease by confirming that I am not a rapist, and can I compliment you on that smashing blouse that you are wearing'

I'm going for 1-1 and would be quite happy with a point away from home. Hopefully some lessons have been learnt from Cheltenhams game by everyone involved with The team and we see a constant battle for the full 90 mins rather than just a 30 min spell. It's been said a million times already but we are lacking a striker, any truth in this Leon Clarke transfer revival?

..and not really that long ago from there being 1 sub. 5 is fine. 7 means larger squads - I don't buy the youth angle on reducing the subs - 7 encourages quantity not quality.

Anyway - good to see Esajas start. Dissapointed not to see Connell start. Ferry seems to have jumped ahead of J Smith in the queue.

It suggests Val Doonican, Gyles Brandreth and Russell Grant I reckon, nothing secure about that!

How does that work? Have you got "I'm not a rapist" knitted on the front? :hmmm:

Let's hope we can leave with the points.

Disappointed that Connell isn't starting

Happy with that team other than the fact I think Connell needs to start. Having 2 strikers on the bench though provides us with good options.

To be fair, Caddis's height isn't much of an issue when playing alongside Flint. He wins everything anyway..but not ideal of course.

Devera should have been on the bench, he can play anywhere at the back apparently...funny that because I argued with my dad the virtue and positives of having seven subs....he disagreed....I just hope it doesn't cost us

But we didn't play better than the opposition for large parts. We hoofed it up field and watched it come back. I'm not expecting Barcelona passing, but Cheltenham had the better chances.
Have to disagree but never mind

If he's injured, we really are fucked.

I know it's not the same as being there, but this game sounds absolutely Bruce Dyer on the radio.  Even the potential penalty barely took my interest!!  It has all the hallmarks of a shitty 1-0 defeat.  The kind we normally pick up on a Tuesday night at Barnet.

Not looking forward to Sunday at the moment and I'm normally very positive about playing the Yellow Peril (because they're shit).

I'm sorry but I really do not understand why we are persevering with De Vita and Bodin -  why? Because they try hard in training? We have proven scorers on the bench and Simon Fucking Ferry who is a clear class apart from our midfield general and captain who aside from a goal has produced very little - beers may be talking but sort it out PDC!

We have proven scorers on the bench

Well we have one and one other who is just as proven as De Vita but i do agree with you in part.  2 & 1/2 games is generally too quick to judge a new partnership but if/when are fit i'd prefer Connell/Kerouche to be given a run together.

Sounding a bit better, thanks to the arrival of Connell.  Why on earth didn't he start?

Some strange squad decisions being made by PDC, which is a bit worrying.  Seems like if you open your mouth or have a bad game you're dropped from the squad completely.  Devera certainly hasn't been bad enough to not be on the bench particularly knowing Comazzi has only just returned from injury.  Ridiculous.

Also, where is Jonathan Smith and personally I'd have Amankwaah over Thompson any day?

Morecambe beating Cheltenham - says it all really.

End of August and could be near the bottom. really hope im wrong however

Yes but typical Swindon would suggest we'll get 4 points from those 2 games. We always lose games like this and Cheltenham.

The vibe on here (and elsewhere) would be rather different without the derby game on Sunday.  As things stand, we go in to this game as underdogs.  That is what's making people jumpy.

A slow start was always a strong possibility.  Just a shame we have to play Oxford so early on.

We beat Crewe who should have beaten us if they took one of thier numerous chances in the first half.  Since then they havent won or drawn a game this season, and are currently losing at home to Rotheram.

Again we lose to Cheltenham who have lost every other game this season and are currently losing to Morecambe

Daggenham have faired slightly better in managing to beat Maccesfield away from home, but got smashed by Bournemouth and lost to Wimbleson.

Hardly inspiring stuff

I'm not saying we are giving up - but realistically we have lost 2 out of three - that is not promotion form in any league, Ive been watching swindon play football for well over 3o years - disagree if you want, but don't call me a dick

We're not getting smashed up though. There are seemingly a few goals in this league and we've lost 2 games out of 3, both away.

How many games have all these players played together? We have two players on the pitch that have played together before and even then the first time that happened was last season. Give it another 12 games at least.

That + pace of the league + physical nature of the game. Mind you, I made similar noises for different reasons last season!

I'm the eternal pessimist (which probably helped in the prediction league last year!), so i think a slow/poor start could be disasterous. This counts as a poor start. I just want us to win games, I don't care how for the time being.

Just seem a bit of bad luck at the moment, i hope.

Keep the faith!  It will take a bit of time to gel like many has said but i understand some people getting a little bit worried especially with our next 3 games:

Poxford
shrews
Rotherham

It's a learning curve for Di Canio and that was also going to be the risk.  He needs to sort it out, as it's his reputation on the line.  If he doesn't do well managing us, he'd not likely to go any higher up the managerial ladder.

Same here.  I said at work today that we'd be lucky to come away with a point tonight.

However, we need to address the fact that we can't pick up points against teams of this type.  Di Canio also needs to decide on his best starting 11 irrelevant of his feelings towards the player.  I get the feeling that some players will never get a look in, because their face doesn't fit?

It feels like we have a team that is lacking quality and cutting edge, and is nowhere near ready to be playing competetive football together. Which isn't entirely positive. Maybe once they get used to eachother and we can field a settled first XI they might start showing thier true abilities (assuming they aren't actually all rubbish)

I guess what it comes down to is the expectation that we'd do what we did last time, off to a flier and get the belief going. However it will do just as well to finish the league that way instead.

However, you can say its wrong to do so, but the optimism is starting to evaporate already.

But when we beat the Pox on Sunday, all that won't matter.

Yeah  Cheltenham and Dagenham and Redbridge, quality sides we should'nt expect anything from those tricky ties.... We are a bit shit, and we are in division 4. What bit are we all missing Mr Positive?

Ritchie and Caddis haven't started well so hopefully it's a settling problem and not that their all shit.

My worry is that Di Canio is probably very difficult to work with and this could be having an effect?

naturally i'm disappointed with the result but we've played 3, conceded 1 from a corner and 1 from a pen so no goals conceded in open play.  we could have had a pen on saturday and sounds like another tonight.

i'd wager that if ours had been given tonight it would have been us win 1-0 and it would have been a draw on saturday if it was given.

there's no point in getting nickers in a twist over a game that was won by a penalty especially as paolo has said time and again that he knows we need more presence in the box.

if we get past the transfer deadline without the 'big striker' i'll start to worry but untill then we'll just have to try to grind our results out.

we all know how much difference having a 20 goals a season man on the pitch can make and we've not been played off the park at all yet.

maybe we could have done a little more to try to win the last two but again two 1-0 results away from home is hardly the end of the world when they were won by set pieces.

paolo is probably very anxious about sunday and once it's over i think we'll settle down and if we win it then these last two results will all but be forgotten

I think a lot of people's expectations have been raised by how we breezed into this division last time round.

Worth bearing in mind last time we were down here walsall and hartlepool both had slower starts than we did, yet both finished above us.

My panic button is still firmly tucked away and I still think it's far too early to know how things will pan out.  Already, they've got the "should have hired ...." people texting into the radio.  Get a grip and get behind them for a bit longer at least!!!!  We were dog shit last year and there's no reason to think it's all going to be sweetness and light this season.

Listening to the mongs texts being read out on the radio is pissing me off no end.  People need to get a bit of perspective.

PDC's interviews are getting longer and longer when he tries to explain what went wrong, so we could be in for a late finish tonight.

I am concerned, Di Canio has made some odd decisions so far. Risser as captain, De Vita and Bodin over Connell, yes we dont see what goes on in training but it's clear from the limited time they have spent on the pitch that Ferry and Connell should be two of the first names on the team sheet.

It's just so familiar, we were never going to get back into it at 1-0. Time to spend some fucking money on a striker and we cant go all season with 3 centre backs.

Not worrying now, it's clear that Paolo is going to sign a striker so give him a chance to complete the squad. Also need another centre half for back up I reckon.

However, the absence of the likes of Timlin, Ferry, Amankwaah and Connell will rightly baffle supporters. Billy Bodin needs a loan spell away as he simply isn't good enough at this moment in time.

Hopefully a few changes for Sunday otherwise we could be in trouble.

(erm, struggling to understand what the hell he's saying. His voice is fucked).

- Very Angry....
- Hoping to bring a striker in......need two top strikers.
- Played badly in first half.
- We should be better, even with the two kids up front. Light bodies..
- Many players were "shy"......
- Need to hold ball up front.....
- Need more desire, more confidence.....
- Need to see positives even when things go on...
- Don't ask about ref, otherwise he go in prison! Its incredible what happened. Should have had pen/red card.
- We didn't deserve to win in the first half -obviously.
- Their player dived "in the swimming pool". Bad bad day for referee. But we should have been better.

Paolo Continued:
- I think he's saying Kennedy isn't ready for a 46 game season, need to be stronger, meaner. But whatshisfaceleftback is injured.
- Didn't pick Devera because Thomson can cover 2 positions. Wanted to keep 3 attacking players on bench.
- Angry with performance, with team, not strong enough yet, not yet a team
- World Cup final on Sunday! We win, we can become a group. Solid.
- Can only say sorry to fans. They were to honest. Was expecting them to have a bit of a pop at Paolo!

Oxford:
- Already decided 2 changes for Saturday. 2 players are not good enough/strong enough at the moment to play "top level". But they can improve.
- for sure a striker needed - speaking to chairman in a minute about it. Feels positive (he must be working on someone). We need a big man, quick man to stick the ball in the onion bag (paraphrased).
- Still not going to break the bank on a striker though.
- Talking of trying to bring one in for Oxford (reading between the lines here, may be wrong).
- Talking about 1 or 2 more players (how big is this squad getting!).

I think a big factor in the semi-panic is that we are playing Oxford next and at the moment we seem to be in a bit of a mess. It's a huge game and we wanted to go into it feeling confident, instead I am feeling very nervous. The game could be coming too early for us, although I will try to hold on to the hope that it could be the game that everything comes together. PDC is promising changes, so lets see what the response is.

If Amankwaah was going to play sunday then he needed to play tonight. He's not the sort of player who reacts well to being in and out of the team. He gets better and better given a run in the side.

If Kennedy is out then Thompson and Esejas need to be working on that flank together all week.

Ferry must replace Risser. Connell would replace De Vita for me.

So, can anyone remember seeing  Leon Clarke play? Obviously reasonably tall at 6'2, any good in the air? Pace? Mobility?

He seems to have OK goalscoring stats in some periods, but I guess the point is that was largely at a higher level and could do well here.

Apart from the rest of the squad if they get pissed off with the wage differential.

Would be a good boost short term though.

Would we break the wage structure for him though? Could be a loan with QPR paying a portion of his wages.

It's a bit different if he's on loan though and QPR are subsidizing his wages.

He's a good player, spent most of his career in the championship, couple of short spells in league one where he got a goal in every two games, would be a top player for us i reckon. 5 forwards seems a bit much though, bodin must be going out on loan

I feel slightly deflated tonight, 2 defeats from 3 isn't a great start. But on the positive side we haven't been dicked or convincingly beaten in either game, if we had I would be more worried. We were never going to walk this league, promotion is the number one priority regardless if it's top 3 or play offs.
Nervous about Sunday but I have a good feeling we can grind out a result.

ok 6 strikers, does that mean he is already accepting the ones he has signed are not good enough or does he genuinely believe he needs 6?! I guess Bodin goes out on loan as he's the one he didnt sign!

CB is worrying though if we only have 3 surely? and none of our full backs can really cover CB either, where as Ritchie can cover the forward position.

Wait and see what happens i suppose.

Whats the score with the injured players? when will this LB be fit?

you certainly are all high and mighty aren't you, and seemingly unable to form any sort of argument without resorting to profanity.

i think we could all infer from your 'it's called experience' line that youw were saying 'i told you so'

it's all to easy today for people to throw their toys out of the pram at the very first sign of disappointment and you clearly fall into this category.  will you be on here if we beat oxford on sunday or will be all be too hard for you to have to say something positive?

as for 'being a swindon fan is something you get stuck with' that's really pathetic, we're a lower league club, this happens to every team outside the top 3 in the premiership, why should we be any different?  if all you want to do is celebrate victory and succes then i'll say it again, you're not cut out to be a football fan, more often than not things go against teams.

i look forward to your response, sure it will be really well considered and all your arguments will be free of foul language...

I think someone like ferry is needed as he is calm on the ball and can slow it down.Interesting to see that the penalty tonight was their only shot on target, that cant be right can it?

I don't think he's wonderful by any stretch of the imagination, but from what I've seen so far from Risser, he's not offering a great deal.  On the basis that Timlin and Smith seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth, we're not left with many options.

If we'd lost the first two and then won this one, we'd all be ecstatic right now, yet we're in exactly the same position points-wise.

From what I've heard, we've been narrowly edged out in two closely fought away games. No shame in that.

That said, Paolo maybe should've gambled on a couple of changes tonight. Connell, Ferry, and maybe even Kerrouche should all be starting on Sunday.

Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 22:33:45
Am I the first one back from the game then? Oh dear. Here goes...

First half, Daggers were quicker out of the blocks and we looked a bit disorganised. We played in a similar way to the Cheltenham game really - too much hoofball with De Vita and Bodin winning next to nothing in the air and being unable to hold the ball up. The main positives were that Phil Smith commanded his area well, and Esejas was running rings around their defenders at times. I have no idea if De Vita was fouled for the penalty appeal, but he was pretty livid after it wasn't given and he was through on goal otherwise.

Second half, we just seemed to lack ideas. Nothing much was happening and the game was crying out for a change. After De Vita and Bodin once more wasted possession between them Paolo threw his arms up in the air, called Connell over and brought him on. Suddenly the Town fans had belief, and the players responded, with neater passing, energetic closing down and some serious pressure on the Daggers defence. Connell was putting himself about and winning things and it looked like we might score. A few chances came our way, one or two which were blocked or cleared off the line... but then it all died down when the penalty was given. I have no idea if the ref got it right or wrong, it was at the other end. But that was that. We lost our way and started playing hoofball again. the ref started blowing up for anything even close to a foul, booking Ritchie for an accidental handball, booking Kerrouche for what may or may not have even been a foul, penalising Connell for going in for a 50-50 ball and generally disrupting the game. We looked lost, and I can only hope we have a few more ideas come Sunday.

I'd like to see Connell start, possibly with Kerrouche. Ferry in for Risser isn't a bad shout, and we really need to see more from Matt Ritchie soon. I'd give man of the match to Flint tonight, making it 3 out of 3 for him. It says a lot about the way we've performed.

Just got in.  We didn't deserve to lose, but we didn't deserve to win.

Ref was appalling. Risser, Bodin and Ritchie did nothing.  Midfield huffed and puffed, but no end product.  Defence solid but stop hoofing long balls.  Caddis did surprisingly well at CB.

Please Paolo, Connell must start on Sunday.  The ten minutes after he came on were the only time we looked like scoring.

If we go a goal down on Sunday I'll be very worried....

Think r4e summed the game up pretty well. I was obviously very disappointed coming home last night as the result and much of the performance wasn't great, but it's incredibly early in the season and in the cold light of day this morning I'm trying to be objective about it.

Daggers never looked like scoring apart from the penalty, and their keeper made one great save from Easyjet in the first half and we were unlucky not to bundle one over the line in a goalmouth scramble towards the end. Result could have easily gone the other way and that would have tempered some of the criticism.

As for our performance, it is League 2 and so expectations must be appropriate but it was a shame that even with time and space the first option was to launch it upfield. This obviously meant we struggled to create chances in the first half as Bodin and De Vita were never going to win those sort of balls. This however will be less of an issue if/when Connell gets more game time and we sign another striker.

Once Connell came on it got better, he seemed to have more of a presence and be able to win the ball and turn his man a few times. We also started to play the ball through the midfield a bit more, particularly the wide men. With two good wingers would like to see more of that. Easyjet in particular looked very skilful, and combined well on occasion with Kennedy (who I thought had a very solid game).

At the back Smith didn't have much to do but commanded his area well and dealt with what he had to. Flint was a beast again and our best player. Unfortunate we didn't have a CB on the bench when Comazzi had to go off, don't imagine that will happen again. PdC is learning as well. Caddis coped manfully when asked to fill in but does need to be told to ease off in the box. Was lucky not to give a pen away in the first half before he eventually did in the second.

McCormack had another good game, always looks busy and gets involved in the play. Risser is a bit of a worry, although maybe he's taking time to adjust. His pass completion stats for the two games I've seen must be about 10% though which is not good for a CM. Wouldn't mind seeing Smith or Ferry in for him on Sunday.

There were a couple of times when we seemed to have players almost running into each other when attacking, but again this is only the first couple of games these have played together, as the next few matches go by you'd expect their communication and understanding to improve.

Kerrouche also looked lively when he came on, and was unlucky to be booked after he chased down a lost cause and put in what looked to me like a good tackle.

All in all a crap result but not a panic-level situation by any stretch. Think di Canio needs to work out his best team and with a bit more of a presence up front (Connell and Kerrouche/Clarke please) and a few more games under their belt there are still signs this could be a good team. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Didnt go but sounded very much like Cheltenham - I dont think its as bad as we think - a bit of luck and a goal can make all the difference but we most certainly need to start scoring some goals away from home.

Clarke isnt a striker I particularly rate (due to his attitude) but should score easily in League 2

Be interesting to see how Sunday goes - Derbys never go with the form book - we really need the 3 points now

London Red's sysnopsis was spot on. One thing I'd like to add though is that Nathan Thompson is not good enough. He was toothless going forward and got caught out in possession too many times, he didn't combine well with 'Easyjet' and was, along with Caddis the biggest exponent of the hoofball. I don't like Da Vita either, he's done nothing to earn his starting place, his was absent and innocuous throughout his performance.

When we got the ball down and started playing it along the ground we looked such a better side. A lot of people were getting annoyed at us passing it backwards but IMO, that's ok. We should have
one of the best midfields in the league and hopelessly kicking the ball over their heads to strikers on the small side won't earn us too many points.

Not going to write my views as they've been mentioned already but Connell must be in the starting XI Sunday if we have any chance of beating the pox.  I'd like to see Risser dropped for Ferry too.

Easyjet looked handy though - would like to see more of him provided we learn how to play the ball on the ground.

I didn't go to the match, just listened on the net. However, every single time the name 'Risser' was mentioned, it was generally followed by 'gives possession away', 'plays a wasted pass' or 'fucks it up'.

The guy is supposed to be our captain. He's been a massive disappointment so far base on the expectations we all had for him.

I've been to all 3 games so far and Risser is indeed a concern.  He goes missing for large portions of the game and then when he reappears he wastes possession.  Given that he is the captain I will assume Paolo won't drop him?  I'm hoping it is just a case of him taking time to settle in but haven't seen any evidence of him getting any better.

Good news on the striker front with Clarke back on the radar.  Let's hope this comes off as currently we don't really look like scoring.

Bit worried.  PDC pinned his hopes on Risser and so far he looks out of his depth to me.  Cant pass wind at present.  Da vita is crap as far as im concerned.  No pace,  no physical strength, cant win a header.  But like PDC said last night him and bodin are 5th and 6th choice strikers.  Not sure what Connell and Kerrouche would think to hear PDC saying we desperately need 2 new strikers.

Im praying that when we have one big guy up front ( maybe it is going to be Clarke )  it will change us big time.  Holding the ball up front and working off of it would be a massive boost to way we play,  and we can put crosses in with some hope then.

Anyone think Ritchie wants out ?  So far hes been poor this season with even PDC commenting on that.  Last year he won player of the year mainly cos he always tried,  but this season he doesnt seem to be.

As for constable i saw him for chippenham many a time.  Was a bull in a china shop then really.  Very physical.  He does have that Austin thing of always putting his weight about and making the defender know hes in a game.  Thou hes contaminated now so rather keep clear really.

As for our fans superiority complex i have to admit i have it.  I think we just lost to 2 non league teams and we will play another non league team on sunday.  Our budget for this league should allow us to be near the top.  Yes ok we will need time to gel.  But commitment and desire to do right things should be there NOW.

Team for sunday for me.

Smith
Amankwaa
Flint
Devera
Cibocchi  ( if fit )
Esajas
McCormack
Ferry
Ritchie (  with a boot up his ass on way onto pitch )
Clarke (  hopefully )
Connell

Subs.  Kerrouche, Risser, Thumberlina, Caddis, Timlin

Although not the result required, i'm being patient for now.. The club appointed an inexperienced manager and must understand there will be teething problems and the finance dictates the quality of player we can attract.
Hopefully before to long Dicanio will understand the league and how to get results?  ;D

Well so much for allowing plenty of time to get there - I left just before 3 and got there just after 5!!! No real hold-ups at all.

I found the ground by accident whilst casually looking to my left. There were no signs on the way in other than Thurrock FC!  The ground is a shit-hole but at least away fans have the best stand. Saw the players get off the coach and then went in the supporters club where I chatted to a town fan from London (who also has a missus from Russia!).

I couldn't fucking believe Bod and Ryvita were starting again. When will Connell ever be fit? Was pleased to see Comazzi start but why no Devera on the bench as cover? That decision ultimately cost us the game, but there's no knowing how Devera would have played.

Some mentioned the game was similar to Cheltenham. Yes, in that we never looked like scoring and adopted the same hoofball tactics, but there was effort missing from several players, particularly Ritchie and Risser. In fact Ritchie is arguably the worst player in the side at the moment and nothing like the player we saw last season. Okay, he's not helped by the hoofball tactics but when he gets the ball he can't get past his man, can't pass and loses possesion easily. My main worry is the number of unfit foreign signings we have made. Are they physically or mentally unfit Paolo?

I guess the pick of the bunch were Connell, Easyjet (in patches) and Flint. Kerrouche didn't do too badly either and got stuck in.

A special mention to the ref who gave us fuck all all game. Is this the PDC factor, I wonder?

Oh, and our fans were much louder than at Cheltnum. There were only 400 but we made a good racket!

As others have said, Connell has to start against Oxford. I'd also like to see Kerrouche up front and Ferry replace Risser. I'd give Ritchie one last chance to impress or give the Spanish bloke a game (if he's fit  ;)).

There is alot of hype however in the home games i have seen the ball went long most of the time and the opposition picked up the first and second balls very easily. This put a lot of pressure on our centre mid and defence. I really feel if we get a striker that can hold up the ball and bring others into play we will see quite a different team. This (i hope) will settle Risser and create space for our other forward and wingers. Also it should stop us chasing the game and let better passing happen futher up the pitch

I think the issue with Ritchie is that we are not playing the style of football that allows him enough of the ball.

Ritchie is a good player when teams can keep the ball on the deck/pass it around, but aimless hoofs pretty much eliminate him from the game.

I also blame the lack of connection between the centre of midfield and the defenders and forwards.  With a decent CM (ie not Risser) there may be more opportunity to play on the ground/get the ball to wide areas.  I thought we didn't use our wingers enough at all last night and that was predominantly due to lack of service.

Was Ritchie not the star of pre season and decent against Crewe. He will always struggle against physical sides at their place, no need to panic.

All I will say is that he looked a class above in the two pre-season games we played at Supermarine and Ciren. He put the effort in too. His ability is not in question, so I hope its just a bit of early season loss of form rather than disillusionment or wanting out. I am still convinced he is key for us this year.

On Risser I felt a bit of a Knight criticising him on after only two games. I think making him captain has put him more in the spotlight. I expect him to be a leader of men and an influence on the game. I'm not writing him off yet, Gary Rose was convinced he had something about him. Paolo made him captain. There must be something there. That said it can't go on forever with better players available on the bench.

Well it is time for Di Canio to show his worth. 2 defeats on the bounce after beating a team without a win yet on the first day of the season doesn't look to promising. Playing the scum on sunday could make or break us. A win against our biggest rivals could give us a massive kick up the arse and get us going. A defeat will be a huge downer and the crowd could turn. 3 points from 4 games would not be good enough, even though it's still early days.

Oh one other thing I noticed at both the Crewe game and last night was that our delivery from both corners and free kicks was pretty poor on the whole. Something to work on in training. With Flint in the side set pieces should be something we target as an opportunity.

I think the reason behind much of the overreaction so far is the obvious parallels to last season - high expectations not being matched, glaringly obvious omission of a certain Scottish midfielder, key positions not being filled, 'key' spine players not performing and when you consider other factors such as a weak pre-season, players not gelling quickly enough then I can completely understand the overreaction.

At least PDC doesn't seem reluctant to make decisions and changes when they're required.

Absolutely spot on. I came away feeling throughly disheartened last night, but I don't like being overly negative so early on because players are still settling. But at what stage do we start to worry?

Look, take the penalty out of the equation and there was no way we were losing last night. Dagenham were really, really bad. if we had drawn,  a hard-fought point is palatable and four points from three – including two away games – doesn't sound so bad.

I think some of the foreign lads will settle in time, what worries me more is our reluctance to select our best players. Connell is streets ahead of de vita and Bodin and must start every game, while Risser just hasn't settled. How long do we give him? Maybe he is mustard and will get better, but we are carrying him at the mo - that is without question. If Ferry isn't going to play come what may, then why not sell him and buy someone else - his exclusion is so baffling.

And Amankwaah? I'm just concerned we're overlooking our more experienced players.

Paolo talks the talk, he really does talk sense, but he has to start transmitting that to his selections and more importantly, get his passion and  ideas drilled into the players.

Only Connell, Kerrooooooooooouche, Flint and McCormack can come out of last night's game with any credit. Maybe Esejas...

Sunday is fricking massive. We can't afford to be nervous, we can't afford a slow start. We need to be up and at em. We need to be solid, potent going forward. We need to be organised. We need to be fucking up for it.

3 points, pride, honour... I'm nervous it after last night's performance, but a win could really solve some questions and kickstart our campaign. Paolo has learned some tough lessons, it's what he learns from them.

my team, based on the two games i've seen so far, and if clarke signs would be:

smith

mankwaah     flint      comazzi/devera      cobochi

Caddis        McCormack      Ferry        Ritchie/Esejas

        connell              clarke

I hope the losses are blips too.The results in themselves are not the immediate cause for concern, although it would obviously have been better had we won. What is a cause for concern is the performances, which apart from a couple of decent spells have been dire.I'm not a little concerned with Di Cannio's team selection, and tactics, not having Devara on the bench last night was poor, and if Timlin is genuinely not in the squad because he gave Di Cannio a bit of back chat that is sad, and could conceivably lead to Di Cannio loosing the dressing room pretty quickly if he continues in that vein.Given the generally poor level of performance so far does anyone really think that getting Clarke in on loan is going to significantly improve matters? It's fair enough to point out that Di Cannio is new, and learning the ropes, and that the new players need time to gel.I think that the signs are not great at the moment.

It might, we seem to be going long ball at the moment. We may have more chance of winning a few and getting the other striker in the game.

Or it may make bugger all difference.

It feels much like last season, which is odd given that the squad has changed hugely.  That said, di Canio's first game in charge, a squad of strangers, a team recently relegated so confidence may still be hit, there's plenty of time for that to change.

That said, anything outside the top 7 this season will be a failure.

Looking at Risser's past he has made 167 appearances in 12 years and has made 26 appearances since 2009. He has had 6 clubs in 4 years spanning 4 countries.

He has certainly not had a recent history of stable football but has played at a reasonable level in Germany and at international level (albeit it being Namibia).

He should be more than able to cut it at this level and PDC has seen something in him although I haven't yet. Although being captain shouldn't stop you being dropped he may be better off coming of the bench for a few games and giving the captaincy to Caddis so he can settle a bit more.

He seems to have been thrown in the deep end by PDC and is struggling to find his feet. I hope this is right and he's just not crap.

Surely that is a concern rather than affirmation that he is a decent player?

That said, I think it's very early days to be judging a player who hasn't been plying his trade in this country.  But then, it could be argued if that's the case, why was he given the captaincy in the first place?

The mongs who actually go to the games or the mongs who go out on match days?  ;)

Well a lot of the mongs that were overeacting whilst listening on the radio were backed up a few hours later by mongs that were at the game so work it out for yourself.

Unfortunately my daughters birthday celebrations overtook the desire to travel to Dagenham on a Tuesday night, I unlike a few of the mongs know where my priorities lie. ;)

I have said right from the start of the season that I believe that we will start slow, I thought I had that wrong after Crewe but it seems I may have been right, but not necessarily.  IMO it is going to be 1 of 3 things:

1.) We will start slow and kick in after 6-8 games sometime in September (unfortunately too late for the POX)
2.) We are decent at home but crap on the road, in which case we will probably finish mid-table (maybe just outside PO's)
3.) We are going to have a season like last year, in which case the mongs will be justified

Either way, I am certainly not going to panic now, these things do take time whether the mongs like it or not.  You can't almost completely replace a team with a bunch of players most of whom have never played in England before and expect them to gel as a team in 3 games, ain't gonna happen, never, no chance.

I will join the mongs at the start of October if we are still performing as we are at the moment, results wise anyway.

Team for Oxford IMO must be
Smith
Caddis Flint Devera (comazzi injured?) Kennedy
Ritchie Ferry McCormack Esajes
Connell Keroooosh

Hopefully this will bring a resounding  :smugfu: to our friends up the a420 :)

In the knowledge we know we are missing the big target man, the thing that puzzles me is the style of football we're playing ! With two small but agile strikers, hoofball is going to acieve nothing, and put pressure on the midfield/defence by constantly having the ball not stick and come straight back.

Why the hell is PDC not imposing the passing game on the team, with clever balls played to the feet of the (small) strikers, to give them the opportunity to show us what they can do. Also, playing two outright wingers is a waste without the big target man - better to exclude one winger and bring in a playmaker (Ferry ?) to create the chances.

When we get the target man, our present style of play may well pay dividends, but untill then, surely, horses for courses - change the football to suit the players we have !!

To get success in Div 4, you need to keep it simple....players who know exactly what their job is. Macari knew this, Sturrock knows this.

As many big buggers as possible, and if not big, then at least Billy Paynter style physical....some pace is also a good thing. Midfielders need to be combative and able to press.....with a lot of emphasis on set plays.

So far it looks like this particular lira hasn't dropped with di Canio.

Interesting to read some of the views from last night.

Personally I don't think we were much better/worse than we were for an hour against Crewe.
That day we got a break with the penalty, and then a top drawer finish from Risser & the team started to play well.

Last night we didn't get that break, an were unfortunate that the ref gave them a soft penalty.

As for Ritchie, I don't believe he was shit last night, he was just not as good as he was last season (where he was a shining light in a shit team). His effort is/was fine, the end product wasn't.

I think it's harsh on Caddis calling for him to be dropped, I thought he generally did well playing out of position.

Also interesting to read the vomments that suggested that we looked better when playing the ball on the floor, when in fact a large part of our good stuff in the second half appeared to come when we knocked balls over or around their defenders & made them turn.

It's the aimless hoofing balls up for their defenders to head clear that we need to avoid.

I also agree that Connell must start, he looks much sharper that the other two and isn't afraid to shoot. He can also hold the ball up & uses his body to hold off the defenders.

I'm not sure who I would play alongside him, none of the others have really stood out so far.

I don't think that we are playing anywhere near our potential yet, but think too much chopping and changing of the team will be counter productive.

you certainly are all high and mighty aren't you, and seemingly unable to form any sort of argument without resorting to profanity.

i think we could all infer from your 'it's called experience' line that youw were saying 'i told you so'

it's all to easy today for people to throw their toys out of the pram at the very first sign of disappointment and you clearly fall into this category.  will you be on here if we beat oxford on sunday or will be all be too hard for you to have to say something positive?

as for 'being a swindon fan is something you get stuck with' that's really pathetic, we're a lower league club, this happens to every team outside the top 3 in the premiership, why should we be any different?  if all you want to do is celebrate victory and succes then i'll say it again, you're not cut out to be a football fan, more often than not things go against teams.

i look forward to your response, sure it will be really well considered and all your arguments will be free of foul language...
I was drunk last night, now I'm sober, but you are evidently still a cunt.

Just got back. Shit night, shit game. Dunno if it was a pen. No cutting edge up front. Connell and Kerrouche looked lively, they need to start next game. Di Canio under pressure already, we need to win on Sunday.

Quick summary for ya.  :thumb:

The only highlight from the game Tuesday night for me, was Kerrouche's piledriver that knocked over their centre back..

Other than that, meh.

How did Kerrouche look? I've not seen him play yet apart from the Supermarine game.

He added a bit more presence up front, hard to judge him as he hardly had much time.

Looks like he could be a decent addition, looked a handful.

Sorry, but from watching the BBC highlights (I know it's not conclusive) we looked a whole lot better than they did, the penalties a joke, the guys flung himself to the floor before Caddis is near him and Risser played a beauty of a ball through for De Vita and that looked pretty nailed on as a penalty for me, the couple of bits from Esajas looked great (if bloody McCormack hadn't got in his way!)

They were just as bad as us, if not worse, the problem was that the chances they showed for us was the only attacks we really had.

Di Vita was taken clean out.

Their pen was hard to be 100% on, he was either taken clean out or, as it looks on the video/from Caddis reaction, flicked the ball on and fell over making sure to run into Caddis leg. Whichever stance you take it was less of a penalty than the Di Vita one.

The ref should be very embarrased for the award of their penalty. Ridiculous.

And maybe it's just me but I can't tell if Doe gets a toe to the ball? It's either a bloody magnificent tackle or a stone wall pen.

he goes through the back of Rafa and gets the ball that way, so it's a pen.

Irregardless, we shouldn't be failing to score at Dagenham.

Penalty decisions go for and against you.  Over the course of the season you hope they even themselves out, but the award of the penalty is not what cost us the game.

well...it technically is as they beat us by one goal (one shot) and it was a penalty ;)

How irirritating. Shall we irrewind and start again?

Technically, irregardless is not a word but can be used in an informal, colloquial context for emphasis, which was precisely my meaning on here....

Irregardless of that, the beauty of the English language is that if a word is in general use by the population then it gets entered into the dictionary.

I know, I grew old, beige and conformist...  Although I'm still a conformist that vomits everywhere!   :D

Mutumbulous made me chuckle, I may have to gently bring that word into circulation.  I'm convinced I brought mong back from the doldrums after it's demise from popular use in the early '90s.
