T'is a strange world when people who defend the rights of a minority to have a view doth protest when the view does not meet their personal ideology.   We all have  a right to disagree with an opinion but to vilify an individual because of their beliefs flies in the face of the equality we pursue.

Time will tell, but I think the number of fans who feel so bad about this that they're 'considering their position' is relatively small.  The majority either don't care at all, or regret the Manager's sympathies but consider this to be peripheral to their love of the club.

Split the fanbase?  I don't think so.  (The pro- and anti-Wills/Diamandis split a few years ago was much more even and damaging, I would say.)  What I do regret though is that some of the people who have left the TEF today are people I have a lot of time for.

I find it really ironic that I got completely slated because of my non-belief in politics -or alternatively my opinions that politics is a complete and utter load of bollocks and a waste of time. People who wont support Town just because of who the manager is, or what his beliefs are, are just doing the club harm - i know deleting acounts from the forum may just be a way not to get dragged into useless arguments, but not supporting Town because of Di Canio is like Crispy (only 'cos its the only example i have) deciding not to support Town because some polish immigrant is manager.

Di Canio's appointment is thus far fulfilling my predictions. It's started with some of our fans, soon enough it could be the media focus of his reign here and that could muddy the club's name and created an association with his political ideology, obviously not establishing a culture of it with the fans but in perception of outsiders anyway.

Although the salute is associated with nazism it was used centuries before and then adopted by the nazi party. Di Canio uses the salute as a solidarity gesture.

If people cannot separate the two and choose to throw a wobbly over a political ideology then they should go and read some history and learn that ideology of solidarity is one thing, killing 6 million Jews is another. Di Canio has said he has some admiration for Mussolini others have admiration for Hitler also. The admiration comes from picking up a nation that is trouble and raising them up through the mire.

Some belive the ideology behind it works, Di Canio is not the 4 reich. He has stated he is an admirer of Fascist theory and past success, until he comes out and orders ethnic cleansing I'll be watching him at Swindon.

In short how much dosh will the Town lose? From this human avalanche.

I think the net loss is more to do with the good will the club will lose, you could argue that having paolo will bring more in than will be lost but those that have been/will be lost are fans that have stuck with the club through think and thin, those we'll gain will be tourists who'll fuck off if the football doesn't reach expectations.

As for the hotel had a few great weekends up there with the old boy and the bar stayed open all night.

Anyway old Blackpool got caught in bed with a member of a hen night one Sunday Morning by his Mrs and that started the decline of Blackpool Towers. I blamed the "Stags head" falling off the wall on his head one night.
Sadly Mr & Mrs Blackpool split up and now he is living in Swindon with another Girl who worked in the hotel at the time !!
Of the Hotel no more. BR woke up one Morning and the roof had fucking blown off down the Street.

Di Canio's politics became our problem when our board chose to ignore them. Of all the dodgy geezers we've had running STFC over the years, I never thought it would be this board who would make an appointment that would stop me wholeheartedly supporting my club for the first time.

As long as I'm ashamed of what our club is being seen to stand for, or at best to be prepared to brush under the carpet, I won't be comfortable giving it my money. It wasn't much anyway.

There is a Nationwide team in division 3 I think but this one is different. Nationwide Pavilion are in division 7 and have evolved from the Nationwide casuals who used to play in some casual league.

They were short of players one game and clarkie played and bought me along. Clarkie doesnt actually play for them but they kept needing players - so I saw out the season despite not really knowing anyone.

Also didnt help I didnt play at all previous season or the start of this one, then come november im playing saturdays and sundays! so unfit these days!

I attend few games because I can't afford the cost of a ticket on top of the cost of the travel. It's got nothing to do with the manager, the performances or the weather.

Div 4 is all about money, even more than the rest of the league. 4, 5 ,6 people throwing a wobbly means sweet FA especially when some of them turned up now and then, especially when they borrowed unused season tickets, I'm thinking sonic here. I seem to recall him useing someones ticket for a game. No financial input there sonic.

I stand with two season tickets bought at the cheapest price available. I feel the Town have done agood job in employing a man with agood footballing pedigree, it's arisk but so is anybody else.

In football people come and people go, and for each of us our reasons our different. At the end of last season I found myself having to hang up my fork for fear of stabbing certain players with my pitch fork and I made the stance not to to do the pitch until things improved.  That was my choice. 

Likewise I am sure there will be many supporters who chose to stay during our darker years and more who gave up after the demotion from top level football.

Put simply it's  cycle that will happen, and will happen for different people for different reasons. It just so happens that the reasons for this cycle are personally impactful for political reason which will always cause debate. The thing we have to do is accept their right to object and, as long as it is done in a way that doesn't adversely affect me or the club, then I'm good with it.  

These guys will have to decide what level of conscientious objection they will carry out in relation to PDC's appointment. Not attending games is one clear way; but will they also refuse to read the adver match reports, turn their heads when STFC results are displayed or have their wive's censor all material that contains reference to STFC before it is given to them.

Sometimes when you love something or someone unconditionally you have to walk away from situations that would conflict with that beliefs and allow space, time or a change of circumstances to heel things - unconditional love doesn't mean you throw away all your beliefs; unconditional love means that when a conflict occurs that may result in you saying or doing something you may later regret you make a personal sacrifice that invariably hurts you more than it hurts the one you love...

I've got no intention of boycotting games because of how I feel in regards to Di Canio's political beliefs. I've never said that. Nor have I said that the club should not have appointed Di Canio for political reasons, I'm fully aware that I am in a very small minority of people who don't feel capable of separating football from politics and as such do not feel comfortable supporting the manager. I am 100% behind the club even if it's from afar.

My financial input is very small and will probably be even less next season as I'm now working shifts and on-call at weekends.  

A persons beliefs or political persuation has nothing to do with anyone else unless they try to push it onto others or use a vehicle like STFC to promote it.  How do we know that a member of the board, a player or a number of the fans aren't facists?  But because we don't know that they are that makes it ok?

I don't believe in god but I also believe everyone has a right to worship their god, as long as they don't preach it to me that is fine.

If a fans personal beliefs are that strong that they can't bring themselves to be involved with the club while PDC is here then so be it, people should not have a go at them for that because that is their personal beliefs, but alternatively the fans that are not outraged by this shouldn't be persecuted either.

My stance is, I don't have a problem with people having beliefs for either side of the arguement as long as those beliefs are not preached to me.  PDC has not preached his views to me or anyone else to do with STFC so I do not have a problem with him being here, on the flip side I have seen numerous fans preaching anti facists views on here and on other social media, which is where the ironic hypocrisy kicks in.

This is why we are lucky to live in the part of the world that we do, because we are allowed to have our own minds and beliefs and spout it on the internet.  Both sides of this particular disagreement would be strung up for airing their views in other parts of the world.  Ain't freedom of speech great.

As for the other point about leaving politics and religion out of football, it's probably not as simple as that but would be brilliant if it could be. But regardless, a fan may stay away because Maurice Malpas/Paul Hart is in charge, or a self-confessed fascist is in charge. Fans can be as loyal as anything, but there's always a breaking point.

Just to address one or two comments since I logged out last night:

1) I understand that PDC's politics aren't an obstacle to everyone's support, and that's fine. They won't stop me following the club news on a daily basis or coming on here, but just like I don't give my money to other companies or charities with views which I don't want to support, I can't very well make a moral exception just because it's a cause close to my heart that's been hijacked.

2) Paolo di Canio's views aren't just the posturings of a footballer trying to suck up to the fans. Paolo is an avowed fascist and admirer of Mussolini, with the tattoos to prove it. I don't think it's ok to go along with him as long as doesn't use the F word in an after-match press conference. He does openly parade his views. If you overlook this side of him, is there anyone you wouldn't have as manager? You have to draw a line somewhere. He crossed mine.

There was a discussion on why some of us felt di Canio's very public espousal of repellent views made him unsuitable to be a figurehead of the club. Others, often very cogently, disagreed. See this is where the irony might come into play. Because you're absolutely right, we can, we do, we love it. But we wouldn't be able to if di Canio's mob had his way. Sorry, but in my view a fair amount of rubbish has been written on this and the many other threads on the subject.  I am passionate about STFC, will go on supporting them, and going to matches as often as I can (not at all at the moment!)  I love football - full stop.  However, I do not like Fascism, and I doubt if there are many on here who do.  Whether it affects di canio's ability to manage or not remains to be seen.  But let's stop pretending that we can divorce football from politics.  Politics is about how we live together in community, and trying to find the best way of ordering that.  Football is an integral part of community life.  there are a lot of people around who detest football for all sorts of reasons, but they are not trying to ban it.  Some people on here feel completely free to say whatver they like about Oxford supporters mostly, I'm sure, in jest, but some not - I have seen posts which suggest that there will be people looking to make trouble at the matches.  Football-related violence is a political issue.  It destroys communities and neighbourhoods, it makes huge demands on police, those who get hurt assume thaere will be an ambulance service and a health service to look after them..... A public figure in football who does not do everything he can to calm supporters down is failing in his job...and that has to be a fear with di Canio.  Someone referred to the Celtic/Rangers stuff.  I don't think either Lennon or McCoist have set very good examples, but that is primarily a supporters issue - and I am pretty sure that is where it could become an issue for our club, if our manager's instincts are to stir up rather than calm down.

I hope not, and, with reservations, will wait and see...

The point for me is that most footballers, managers and fans for that matter have political beliefs that a pretty right wing compared to mine. Racism in football has only recently been deemed "unacceptable".  Its all a bit of a pantomime and that has never stopped me enjoying my football, its all part of teh tribal nature of it, and its the same position in terms of d'canio. I can understand others feeling they can't support the club while he's in charge, but to be honest, it can sound a bit like rick from the young ones......

I get why some are against him due to his political views but I don't remember it being an issue when he played over here before so why should it be now? I'm sure the club and PDC himself are aware of the concerns of some, maybe they'll do something to help appease those concerns.

Same for how he will perform in the job. We have a very good record with managerial appointments of ex-players who played at the highest level and PDC fits in to this category with Macari, Ardiles, Hoddle and McMahon. Not sure of how he can do a worse job than Wilson or Hart did this season.

Agree to a point. There has been a slump in quality and that in part is down to certain individuals absence. I'm sure they are still reading it though. The only way it will get better is if people make it so by posting.

Some time back when you tried to delete your account it required mod approval and perhaps a pm or 2. I think it was around the time the ignore button was introduced we felt that people have fuck all to justify if they want to delete their account, if they want gone let them do it themselves. Once a few discovered they could do it, I think it probably snowballed from there.

I found it interesting that quite a few people had an opinion on the Trusts lack of communication, yet when the chair of the Trust came online and gave everyone the opportunity to ask questions, only a couple of people really bothered to take the time to ask him anything? There is a general apathy around the club at the moment and I think it’s a shame, but has been caused by years of neglect...possibly starting around the time we got dicked by Preston, although it was probably much earlier?! I’m even more disappointed that no-one asked him what his favourite cheese was...very poor.

For me I’m definitely in the 4D and OST camp, I’m approaching 40 and I’m at the stage where football for me doesn’t really matter anymore. Of course I will want Swindon to win and will read the match day threads etc but if we lose, yes it’s frustrating, but that frustration soon fades after Saturday 5pm.

I think as the forum gets older, so does the contributors and I like coming on here and reading about ‘normal things’ with ‘normal people’. (I.e the non football threads)

Personally I think there is a good mix of both but football wise, is there a lot to talk about? It’s all pretty shit overall isn’t it!

I find most discussion about football to be banal.

Also a lot of football fans are idiots as well, you only have to go on Twitter and read the pathetic ‘banter’ between rival fans (mainly Premier League) which is generally puerile and tedious.

While most of the above is true, it does beg the question why other club’s forums seem to flourish with their football related threads.

I usually have a peek at forums of clubs we are playing, before and after, and there is a decent amount of discussion/waffle/bollocks on football.

Maybe there’s only so many times you can say so and so is shite/head like a 50p piece/where’s the money gone.

And the reason this forum is mostly frequented by oldies is that the young these days can’t read or write!

But this forum was never created for the football. It was all about the 'bants'.

I can only speak for myself but that was mainly down to simply the day that the Trust engaged.

Probably illustrates what a shite 40+ fan I have become, but I very rarely post on here at weekends as I have shitloads of family and fun things to do, only really being in front of a computer whilst working in the week, thus as the Trust guy came on at the back end of the week I had got less wound up by the Monday and to be honest by then when it became clear that nothing was really going to be answered beyond reiterating things about NDA's and undisclosed Town End developments which were going to be big, really big, the best and that's all we are able to tell you pushing the matter furthered seemed futile.

I think as you get older, in the majority of cases life move on and football interest become more peripheral and this is being reflected on this forum, many of us just aren't full of spunk and vinegar anymore. This forum has been around a while. I was still at school when I joined! Everyone has just got older, fatter and more depressed. I don't go as much as I did then but it's still a big interest for me.

I've got older, but thinner and more cheerful so nyaaaaahhhhh. Although I do seek to keep in touch with depression by making regular visits to the County Ground

Although I agree with most of what you say I think you are wrong about other clubs forums. As I am sure you know I visit other clubs forums regularly to see whats going on at our rivals locally/divisionally/historically. Very few even mention upcoming fixtures or if they do they are often no more than 2 or 3 posts in length.

With very very few exceptions other teams in our league talk little about football and many have no posts for days on end about anything, even pre game/post game although most do a matchday page where most of the post game quotes I take are from.

In our division the only clubs that have forums similar or more active than the TEF are probably only Coventry, Exeter, Luton, Mansfield and Chesterfield. A few clubs like Morecambe, Yeovil, Accrington, Crawley, Crewe, Stevenage have barely 1 or 2 posts a week if any!

I think thats more to do with the level we are at, the higher the leagues the more posts, interest, football related thread there are, pretty much commensurate to the level they are at.

As for interest I know its been covered a lot in the past and will be many times again...a LOT of fans lost a lot of interest after Preston at Wembley, I totally lost any interest for a year or 2, some have started returning a bit now but its going to be hard to win those fans back and playing how we did under Flitcroft was never going to do that.

As I hit about 35 I lost interest in football, Swindon, England the lot, that was around 2000 when the club was at a low point and the football dished up every week was pretty shit too. I went several years looking for results but not really being interested in watching games even when on live TV.

I moved away from Swindon in 2001 and slowly started getting my interest back after a few years but I needed that break to reassess how I was a supporter, it is wierd that as I have moved further away physically from the club that I have got back into STFC again.

We have had and will have lots of up seasons and down seasons but in the main in my 43 years or so of following the Town we have been pretty average/shit and only in about 7 or 8 of those seasons have I actually really enjoyed watching us and in about 7 or 8 of them I have utterly hated or totally ignored due to lack of interest.

Over the last 17 years since I moved away I have seen Swindon in person probably no more than 40 times in total, having to rely upon listening to inane chatter on the radio about players socks or hairstyles because the football is so shit there is nothing to commentate upon, and then when a goal is scored not knowing which team has eve scored it until about a minute afterwards. That has not helped things and actually disintegrates the listener from what is really happening.

I have been much more rejuvenated this season with iFollow. Being able to watch games from my computers day trips to Holland have brought me closer to STFC again, even through the thick and thin the good and the appalling I feel I am part of it again rather than seeing highlights and hearsay about games and how others see things, often very differenty that I see it, but thats football, its all about opinions but only about reasoned opinions not like the FB group which is only about slagging off Power/the club/the fans etc.

I actually find the TEF in the main pretty tolerant of opinions and very few are shouted down and most are pretty reasoned...long may it continue.

I only come on this forum for football chat and to argue with reg about said football chat.

This usually means that I open up the web page on my phone, look at latest posted topics and then leave straight away. A lot of people know each other on here through old football times and like to discuss 80% bollocks which is fair enough. When the team is shit the amounts of threads on football is limited.

It does seem like the vast majority on here don't watch the team and have lost interest which if is the case then obviously they don't contribute to football threads like they used to.

I still go to 50% of games in a season I'm just usually too depressed to write or read about it.

Football wise I use the forum as a kind of therapy, its good to let it out.

Being comfortably in the 41+ age bracket I've certainly not let football ruin my entire weekend these days (Wembley type disappointments aside). An hour or two of moaning and engaging in circular arguments does the trick.

The Mrs is happy because I leave her alone to watch strictly come ice skating casualty. The kids get on with xboxing.

Obviously there are events - new manager/new key injuries/new Vigs strop to talk about. But other than that its fairly mundane. We all hope we can find form and get up. Most of us don't see it. Some point out the pointage is still on.

Not much more to say on ground ownership until more comes out from whomever. Not got the energy or skills to do any form of digging to see if any more can be discovered than the PR has told us.

Admittedly a lot of things very worthy of their own thread do get lumped into the two threads, both the "Trivial things" threads.

It's been mooted before that we should get rid of such 'mass' threads. Too many people whined, though, so nothing happened. The good/bad things about football are also likely to deter new threads from being made, and the ex-players thread. Just a few off the top of my head.

Although sometimes it's useful to have catch-all threads - I have absolutely fuck all interest in cricket so avoid the Cricket thread, likewise if you don't like the political rants you can just avoid the Lets Get Political thread (or you could if Reg and Legends Lounge didn't keep blaming everything on the Tories/Labour in every other fucking thread). But the really generic ones do tend to narrow things into just three or four mega threads, I agree

Not sure about Twitter being the cause of lack of posts (it may well be) but the FB group certainly has had an effect IMO, it also gives a lot of voice to a few people that shout the loudest with the most vocal of opinions often ultra negative.

That negativity can spread through a fanbase easily with little or no substance at all to the roots of it.

I am so fed up on there with a vocal minority of our fans either saying "we are far to big to be in this shitty league" and "Power where has all the fucking money gone" and "Power out" as thats all that seems to be on there now so I have stopped following it, the worst thing is its only every about 3 or 4 people (including the twat that runs the page) that start all the threads.

There is so little praise when things do go well.

I think that in the main the TEF is fairly well balanced on that front with nowhere near as much kneejerk reaction when things go wrong.

As for the "cunt/alright" button TBH they are a bit pointless, what other forums do often have is like FB has where a post can be "liked/disliked" individually.

Just a thought...wouldn't a Reddit style up vote/down vote work a little better than alright/cunt? That way people who post really good content or comments or when someone gives some useful advice (Samdy RE: Mortgages or Batch Revolut Card). You could even link it to some kind of digital asset (if your that way inclined) or create an independent TEF currency, maybe they could be called "Bollocks" or simply TEFs. If you wish, you can tip a fellow member for said useful content/comment/making someone laugh. E.g "Nice one Jayo, +2 TEFs @jayohaitchenn"

I don't know how any of you would feel about that but it would be a good incentive to maybe attract more Town Fans, and generate better content. Of course, the bollocks will always remain, that's what makes it good (maybe) and you can still freely tip someone if they've spouted favourable bollocks.

On the whole, most stuff here is pretty good and I do enjoy a fair amount of the non footy elements here.

I'm not proposing a forum overhaul btw, just think a little tweak or incentive would be a fun way to share content. I have no idea if anyone has suggested similar before and i'm certainly not reinventing the wheel here.

Always been more of a reader, occasionally make the odd post. This forum (apart from the off the wall messages every now and again) is by far the most entertaining and informative one compared to the Facebook mish mash. I think it is probably something to do with age as more often than not the comments/arguments/replies on here require a bit more thought and show more maturity than most I have read on the Facebook page.

The karma system is all the current version of the forum software supports, it isn't tweakable beyond renaming the tags. As far as I can tell there is no upvote post function but I'll have another look and see what I can find.

Ahh I see. I have no idea what software the forum runs off if I'm honest. Nice one Jayo, I think something like that could be a good thing though. Even if just separate upvote function aside to the Karma tags.  Cheers.

It isn't officially supported in the simple machines software - it's a user mod that can be installed. Only Barry Scott has the power to do something of that magnitude.

In my opinion the more bollocks there is, the more people there are around to discuss STFC when something happens. We all have varying degrees of enthusiasm but we all came here for the same reason, at least initially. Anything is better than a hundred posts saying, 'We all Blackburn tonight?' or 'Morecambe away, 23 Jan :heart:' Be careful what you wish for!

Sorry Bob, been meaning to reply to this. I'm 32. The moment football stops mattering to would be the moment I would no longer frequent this forum. I've got little interest in discussing anything non-STFC related with people who also happen to be STFC fans (although I have commented on the odd non football related thread). I'll do that with my friends/family/work colleagues etc. Basically in a real life situation as opposed to a virtual one. If I didn't live in Wales I would probably spend hardly anytime on here at all but I do enjoy the football threads, especially the STFC related ones & I particularly enjoy reading peoples predictions/synopsis of the games.

Thanks mate, appreciated, I've been very well... I've had a lot of changes in my life (for the good) over the last year or so.

I will add, though, I stopped posting for a long time as I became fed up with a lot of what I was reading on here so I had to log out and have some time away.

The reason i don't post so much now is that everything in my life has changed. I have had grand kids, a new relationship and steady falling out of love with the football, now it more about meeting the lads for a few drinks than the football, the football is just a break in the drinking.

Ells was still posting on here around the start of Aug 2018 (not sure if she has since tbh), so it's been 5 months ish.

Technically I've only been on here since 2015 (I think) as BNS. I'm certain I had an account in 2011 though under a different user and then subsequently forgot my login/couldn't retrieve. In any case, long before I signed up I was a "guest lurker" (eww) but only read matchday threads and any other titbits that sparked interest (transfer rumours et al). It was quite nice being on the outside.

Anyway, I digress as I always do but I promulgate the main point that I never crossed path paths with Fatbury (or Michael Pook), until now.  Further, Ells always made good points as well as being able to handle the largely male populous on here. As someone else said - she obviously has her reasons.

A bit odd considering I (and maybe others) have sent PMs and emails checking to see if she's OK. I noticed somebody else had on twitter as well.

A WOMAN from Oxfordshire was terrorised by an ‘obsessive’ stalker despite him having been arrested by police and released under investigation twice throughout her ordeal.
In sentencing David Russell at Oxford Crown Court yesterday Judge Peter Ross said that the 30-year old, of Silverless Street, Marlborough, had subjected his victim to ‘psychological torture’.
Russell tried to change the locks at her house, posted photos through her letterbox and bombarded her with phone calls.

The judge said he ‘cannot comprehend’ the decision to release him twice under investigation after the offences were reported, a decision which prosecutors blamed on the Crown Prosecution Service.
Detailing the multiple acts of stalking and harassment over three weeks late last year, prosecutor Michael Williams said that Russell had been in a relationship with his victim between October 2017 and March last year.

After they broke up, he told the court, Russell began numerous acts of harassment and stalking at her Oxfordshire home and Wantage place of work.
In the first incident Russell arranged for a locksmith to come to her home, believing that she would be out.
The plan to change the locks was foiled, however, as the woman had stayed at home that morning.
Russell was arrested for that incident but released under investigation and the victim went on to install CCTV cameras at her home.
Not long after he was spotted dropping a parcel at her home.
Inside was a number of items including a photograph of her as a teenager, gin and tonic, chocolate and a CD by musician Tom Odell.
Cameras later picked up his movements returning to her home after she had gone to work that morning.
The next day he posted a letter at her address and that night he bombarded her with about 50 phone calls, in one he said he would ‘get’ her.
He was again arrested and released under investigation and just days later he sent her messages about her social media use and again showed at her home.

On that occasion she noted the car he was driving and colleagues at her work later said they had seen that car outside her workplace.
In mitigation at the hearing his defence barrister Russell Fraser said that his client had wanted to ‘rekindle’ the brief romance he had once had with his victim and the offending was ‘not prolonged in the context of this type of offending.’
He added that Russell’s decision making during the time had been ‘influenced by his use of cocaine’.
Sentencing, Judge Peter Ross said that Russell had inflicted ‘psychological torture’ which had left her terrorised and afraid.
Russell was jailed for three years - 18 months for stalking and breaching a restraining order and 18 months for a previously imposed suspended sentence activated.

He'll serve the 18 months that was suspended then as part of this sentence, so he's got 18 months for this and the 18 months for the fraud is now "activated" in effect.
