Title: My second football team...
Post by: @MacPhlea on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 22:38:43
is Harry Redknapp FC...

For some reason whoever he manages I have an affinity with... top bloke, top manager and should be in charge of England, end of...

I don't mind Exeter, but if I'm honest don't even really look out for their results anymore.

If for some reason Wilson fucked off then Tisdale would be my first choice for replacement, again.

I have no second team. I don't mind some teams, but their results have no affect on my moods (like The Mighty Swindon) so therefore matter not.

I'm not trying to cause anything on this thread, but for some reason this bugs me. Its kinda different for the origional post because it's sort of an attraction to a certain manager rather then a team, but i don't understand how people can have two teams.

What really pisses me off is when people ask me who i support, i reply Swindon, and they come back with " ahh okay, which big team do you support"

Kind of a pet hate for me im affraid!  :)

A coincidence, but i look out for the results Walsall. Have the most reasonable fans on various other forums, seems like they deserve more success than the part timers of Franchise and other clubs Also feel a bit sorry for them with 4 Premiership teams nearby not really much chance of attracting new fans.

Not sure I'd say that if they beat us though.

I completely agree, my Exeter following goes as far as that I lived their for a while and caught a couple of games (although not that many), nowhere near a team I support.

Does that "what big team do you support" thing really happen to people though? Even in random pubs watching random premier league games I don't think it's ever happened to me. Maybe I answer "Swindon" with such conviction that they figure out not to ask, which obviously makes be a better supporter than you.

Have to agree. Never yet met anyone who claims to have a second/third team (and yes I've met them who can reel off three or four, in order, that they claim to "support") who's actually been to any of the games of the teams they claim to "support". There's teams who's results I'll look out for (which I think is more what triseros and MF are talking about), but you support one team, end of

I've had it a few times, mainly at school/on xbox talking to people who don't know much about football and only know about the premier league teams.

Annoys when I hear people saying "I support Arsenal" then the other bloke is like "I'm Man U". I just feel like "no, you don't!... well not in anything like the way I support Swindon... you watch them on TV and maybe buy a shirt!!!"

I follow Lillestrøm SK as well. I wouldn't know whether to say if I supported them or not but I have been to watch them a few times and try to follow their games online.

Since moving I've taken an interest in Coventry's results but that's literally just a passing interest.

It's pretty simple. In my case it's due to being brought up in Swindon and my dad being a lifelong Southampton fan. Hence we went to a couple of Southampton games a season for 20 or so years. I've been to a lot more Swindon games but I'll always have a soft spot of sorts for Southampton as I grew up watching them play.

I love watching Arsenal play as well though that's just due to Wenger and the style of football they play. Though I like seeing them win things and do well as I really hate Chelsea and Man Utd. I want to catch a game at the Emirates at some point but it's not easy getting tickets and it would be an expensive day out with the travelling costs.

I just say 'Swindon, who else?'

I wouldn't say I have a second team because i don't but if the unthinkable happened and we went under i think i'd start to follow the cobblers, and while i know very little about them other than they are now top of the blue square i'd give anything to go to an AFC - McDons game - i'd give it some serious 'grief'...

I think that's the point of Harry Redknap FC, I don't get emotionally charged in the way I do with Swindon, I'd never buy the team's shirt (unless some bright spark suddenly brought out a HRFC shirt) and never go and watch them instead of Swindon (unless there was a hospitality day involved) I just like his style of football (and the fact he reminds me of Deputy Dawg)

There is no second team.

I often look to see how the following are doing:
- Cheltenham: Cos ?I work there
- Coventry: Cos my mate went to uni there and Cov vs Spurs was the first 'big' game I went to with a bunch of mates
- Brovers: Cos my grandfather supported them
- Shitty: Cos my uncle supported them
- Forest Green: Cos I used to live near them

I recall a guy at Uni who was football mad but supported Manchester United, Southampton, Bournemouth and Plymouth... Three of those teams are in the same division now!

I've a mate who's a Spurs and Swindon fan....he was brought up a Spurs fan as a kid, then moved to Swindon in the 60's as many did, so started watching the Town, and still does.

Not so much these days...cost etc, but he used to go regular to WHL and travel for European fixtures.

His enthusiam  is probably slightly less for the Town than the Yids, but there's not much in it.

To add to that, I can't take those proper plastics seriously. It almost makes me angry when they talk of this far off team, being so close to their hearts. And have this fake anger when they lose and shit. It makes me cringe. Like when mates have Facebook statuses in relation to how their plastic team has done. "Hahaha, lets all laugh at spurs" and "Laugh at the poor crying spurs child." Or even another of my mates who, for a while, had some "Love United, Hate Glazer" badge as his profile pic.

Grow up.

Before I moved to Swindon in the 80's I was a typical plastic. I 'supported' Spurs in so much as I watched them on the telly and when football was discussed I would say they were my team.

Which was all bollocks and doesn't compare in any way to how I feel about Swindon.

I am an ex plastic.  with my mum unable to drive swindon was just as at of reach as manchester to me.  hence I followed my dads team united.

then I went to a swindon game with a school friend and was hooked from then.  the day of reckoning came when we played man u. I celebrated like a bastard when we equalised and without knowing it became swindon till I die.

live football was the key to changing to a life less plastic.

I still want united to win the league more than any other team.  I just don't care if they don't.  I still despise liverpool though.  odd.

when I was a lad in the late 70s/early 80s, Swindon were shit and Liverpool were winning everything, hence I did what a lot of kids did and "supported" Liverpool even though my dad took me to a fair few Swindon games. As I got a bit older I went to the odd Liverpool game as a special treat, but more Swindon games. The atmosphere of a couple of the big cup games in the Lou Macari era (Sunderland & Sheff Wed spring to mind) was probably responsible for turning me more towards Swindon and regular live matches than anything else.

I suspect a lot of people supported a big team as kids that they still keep an eye out for but have since returned to their local club for convenience and more of a connection with the club

Still doesn't get close to supporting Swindon though although I still look out for the results and will watch Hearts when on ESPN.

Re: second team, I don't have one as such, but look out Sheffield United results, as I went to see them a few times when I lived there. Have to say the sight of 20,000 odd drunken Yorkshiremen singing (I use that word lightly) 'greasy chip butty' is something else.

Although it has usually applied to Town, "not being very good" is a bit of a requirement for me to like any other club.

On that basis, "playing away" at Woking and actually cheering and generally joining in is something i do midweek occasionally - I work there.

Even more adventurously, I ended up chanting "up the dale, up the dale, up the dale!" at Southampton the weekend after our Johnstones win when we were at Carlisle - a guilty pleasure.

What distinguishes though is the absence of any anxiety - is that the beauty of "supporting"?

When I was a kid, I had a bit of time for Hartlepool....much the same now with Rochdale, I liked the fact that they are usually irredeemably shit, but occasionally do something.

In the Pool's case it was with Brian Clough as manager....I was quite excited when we played them in 69....probably for the first time, bizarrely with Kenny Allen in goal for them.

As I've mentioned in the past, I lived in Germany between the ages 5-7 and I was mental for football from about 4. To be honest I 'supported' players until I went to my first Swindon game in 1990.

The likes of Grobbelaar, Matthaus, Hassler, Gascoigne, Lineker, Maradona etc etc It was irrelevant who they were playing for, I used to watch Eurosport constantly watching football.

Then a trip to see my dad in England in November 1990, a 2-1 loss at home to Port Vale and that was that.

There's teams who's results I'll look out for (which I think is more what triseros and MF are talking about), but you support one team, end of

Bollocks. Closet Southport supporter you is.

I follow FK Zeljeznicar's results. If someone can name the country they're from without looking it up, they deserve a pat on the back.

always supported the town and had my first season ticket around 1980 (best get this in first considering what follows)

as for 2nd team, me uncle took me to Ferguson's first game as manager for man u in 86(?) v scumford at the manor...I remember man u getting turned over and me getting crushed in cuckoo lane eventually getting out to see man u kicking off everywhere including putting buses windows thru...it was acceptable in the 80s.....so he then took me to a few more games including Man U v Newcastle at Old Trafford and I remember this one as Mirandinha was playing for the Geordies and nearly all the toon fans turned up wearing sombreros-quality sight.....one more memorable game was v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, not so much for the game but more for the incredible amount of coppers holding back Chelsea fans itching to get at the utd fans.

Any team that's playing against any team(especially the current one) that's ever been managed by Harry Redknapp.

Too right they are.  :D
I went to the Sarajevo Derby a few years back, it was absolutely crazy. Flares, fights, banners, smoke bombs, the lot. Riot police dousing the crowd to keep the fans apart.

I look for lots of teams results.... hoping they have lost!  Pompey, Chelsea, Nottm Forest, Uddersfld, Leeds for a start.... It could only ever be STFC for me to die for, but I was professionally involved with Hereford (no not as a player!!), so do always look for them.  (Remember when Swindon came to play them pre-season for the Hereford Senior Cup, which Town had won the previous season, and when the presentation happened, the cup was pulled out of a plastic carriet bag, and was all tarnished....how embarrassed was I!!!)  Also look for Falkirk, because a distant relative - Kenny Deuchar - plays for them (now), and for Ross County, because they are the nearest team to where we live now.  Doesn't make me disloyal to the Town in any way.

Got a soft spot for Barnet cos my grandparents used to lived there and we would go and watch them when visiting.

Dont support them but want them to do well and always look out for the results.

Cant see her spending much time at Underhill, really has the feel of a non league ground.

Is that the private or public secateurs ?  The latter might be better for cuts at the moment.

Shears quality.

Town for me, first, second and third, but I have to admit to doing a bit of glory-hunting recently with QPR. They're my local team, my daughter's a fan and their fans are a decent bunch. And they hate Chelsea.

Serious question...are you not disappointed she doesn't follow Swindon?  My boys are still much too young for football, but I've more or less assumed that they're going to come to games with me one day and become fans themselves even though we live 60 miles from Swindon.  Am I being naive?

I've taken her to a few Town games, but she decided she wanted to follow her local team (quite a few of her mates support QPR as well). And let's face it, it could be a lot worse...

Also I'm not sure that inflicting a lifetime of pain and disappointment on your offspring is good parenting. But if we ever play them again I'll force her to wear her Swindon top!

good on you. I rekon too many parents force their team on their kids. It doesnt do any good in the long run, they end up hating football.

I think if you move away and your kids grow up somewhere different then hopefully they will chose to support a team in the area that means something to them.

In Swindon weve got plenty of Spurs/Chelsea/W Ham etc who support their club because their parents or grandparents moved out the slums 50 years ago. A desperate attempt to deny who they really are. Swindonians from Swindon.

Totally agree with the last few posts! Mums a Chelsea fan and Dads a West Ham fan. Got annoyed when i was about 6-7 because i was unable to watch these teams, apart from being on a telly! So asked my Dad to watch local football and he took me to cheltenham, was having none of that. Went up to the County Ground (season of 1995-96) and fucking loved it in the town-end! Loved it so much i i demanded a season ticket for my birthday and went every season there-after until i started playing Saturday football at 16.

SWINDON TIL I DIE!!!

My dad never forced Swindon Town on me. In fact I probably chose them to get closer to him as my parents divorced when I was 3.

I know you shouldn't force football fandom on your children but I would be absolutely gutted if me and my good lady had kids and they opted for Bristol City. I dread to think about it.

Majority of my family are all Town fans so it is little surprised that I followed along.  However I always look out for the results of the following...

Fortuna Dusseldorf - have friends in Dusseldorf and we have adopted the Bundesliga 2 club as our own.  A good thing is that you can always watch the games through internet streaming and Fortuna registered their first win of the season on Saturday after losing their first 6 games of the season.  Bundesliga 2 is a cracking division too and the atmosphere at the matches are generally very good.

Manchester City - Kevin Horlock and Oasis being my reasons.

Harrogate Town - went up there a couple of years ago on a cricket tour.  Our Saturday game was postponed due to weather so we headed along to Harrogate v Hucknall Town, Harrogate won 2-0, it was good meaty football with plenty of tackles flying in and flowing passing on display.  Been up there a couple of times since to watch them and have also adopted them.  They also had Trevor Benjamin on loan last season which was an added bonus.
