At the start of the season my father in law stuck a bet on town winning the league, I thought he was fucking barmy, but he's not far off!! Can't believe we are second with only a handful of games to go. Don't think my nerves can take much more of this!

It really is days like this that make you forget all the hurt of recent years, the false dawns, the near death before Fitton took over, the poor heartless performances when they arent fit to wear the shirt.

There aren't many days like this in the life of a Town supporter, so much riding on the game and they did us all proud, never let us down and fought for the win.

I sat and listened in disbelief today and although this season due to work commitments I've not been able to go.
I think even the most pessimistic fans (I'm probably one of them) Have to admit this now is the best chance of getting back to the heights we know this club can get to.
I forget that there are plenty of fans who go now who have never seen us play in the second tier let alone the top league, we almost took it for granted i think but with the rebranding of the Championship as it's now called i think it's a whole new bigger ball game.

I'm just very proud to be a Swindon Fan and feel guilty I've not been about to support more.

Monday's going to be a tough old game. That must have taken it out of them today and they've only got tomorrow to recover. Trannies have had an extra day. The adrenalin should get the boys through though. It will be very interesting to see what the attendance will be.

Watched them last night. They weren't too bad, but Norwich were playing with 10 men for 80 mins and when they took the game to them, it was only for a few goal line clearances they didn't concede more. Not forgetting the shiteness of the ref.

Leeds 0 Swindon 3: match report


Millwall’s home draw with Brentford the previous night had seen them snatch second spot in League One from Leeds United and push the Yorkshire club outside of the automatic promotion positions for the first time since the early days of the campaign.

Leeds had the opportunity to re-address the balance, but reckoned without the guts and guile of Swindon Town.

Danny Wilson’s men arrived at Elland Road buoyed by their recent form which had propelled them to within one point of Simon Grayson’s oufit.

By the 55th minute the match was over as a contest when Swindon’s Charlie Austin headed home his 17th goal of the season to give the Robins a 3-0 lead they never looked likely to relinquish. They now stand proudly in second place behind and have added another twist to what has been an eventful League One season.

For Leeds, since January their campaign has been one of slow, painful self-destruction. In December, returning triumphantly to the Championship as League One winners looked a sure-fire certainty. The play-offs beckon now and it is by no means certain they will have the wherewithal to face them given the mental hammering they have endured over the last three months.

They started brightly, but as as so often been the case since the turn of the year, they failed to turn their superiority into meaningful chances.

Swindon, on the other hand, while remaining resolute in defence, continued to threaten the home goal and it was no surprise when they grabbed the lead two minutes before half-time.

Jon-Paul McGovern sent over a cross from the right which headed towards Swindon striker Billy Paynter and Leeds full-back Andrew Hughes. Hughes slipped at the crucial moment. An off-balance Billy Paynter stabbed the ball into the net.

It was a crushing blow for what was clearly a fragile Leeds side. And it was to get worse just the other side of the break.

Three minutes after the restart and from what seemed an innocuous situation, the ball managed to reach Billy Paynter who turned and fired home his and Swindon’s second.

If the task of salvaging something from the game had just got harder, any hopes of recovery were extinguished seven minutes later when Charlie Austin headed home.

Finished work just after 4.30. Popped into Los Gatos, got the old man to get the score up on the laptop. I thought he was making it up.

Fucking ecstatic about that result.  I was supposed to accompany my Leeds supporting best mate the game today but ended up getting roped into a wedding.  

Needless to say he switched his phone off once the scores filtered through to the bar.

Credit to Wilson and Shirtlifter I didn’t think he was the right choice for the job but he’s done a stirling bit of work in getting his squad together.  Unbelievable achievement today and I couldn’t have dreamt we would be in this position at the start of the season.

Point taken, but it is interesting that nearly all of the posters are moaning about how useless their players/manager/Bates are. There is hardly an inch given or little acknowledgement that another team could actually play well. Like we did today. I guess that's just Leeds arrogance, but it contrasts very strongly with comments on here after we have been outplayed. At least we (usually) give credit where it is due.

Just got back, what a great day out that was.

Support was great to day, and the team all played really well, it would be difficult to single anyone out as a Man of the Match they all played so well.

Leeds had a lot of possesion in the first half, and Lucas had to make a couple of important saves, but once the first goal went in I thought we were much the better team. :D

One of the Highlights of the day was the "Fire Drill" chant as the Leeds fans were streaming out in the last 15 mins.

Just back from the game. Wow. Absolutely fantastic performance from Town today. My best away match ever. I couldn't believe how good we were today. Leeds had the better first half hour, Lucas was brilliant, Darby, Cuthbert and Greer were terrific throughout the first half. We took all three goals so clinically well, and we should have had a couple more. I love the fact that we just soaked the pressure up at their ground, the mighty Leeds, but we weren't cowed by them, and we played our game exactly to our gameplan and played them off the park at times.

Swindon Town, I love you. Twenty two seasons and today was one of my most memorable games ever.

Thank you, Danny Wilson and the Board. The improvements this season in the team and the wider club have been phenomenal.

And the fans - some brilliant songs today. We were great.

It's because Leeds fans can always come up with a million and one reasons why they lost but not one of those reasons is ever, EVER that the opposition may just may have played well or done at least done one thing right during the whole 90 minutes.

Right, I work with a couple of Leeds fan.

One of them, is a proper Leeds fan who still goes to alot of games despite living in Swindon. Infact I saw him in the services on the way up.

When we dicked them at the CG I naturally gave him some stick but held back abit because there was still a chance for revenge.

Now we've beaten them twice - do I go for it, do I taunt and abuse him so much that he crawls into the fetal position and cries - or back up just incase we get them in the play offs or something?

Bide your time.  We won the battle today...but we've not yet won the war.

Just got back home.

For the first 20 or 30 minutes we sat back a bit and just soaked up the pressure. There was a couple of scary moments, Lucas pulled off an excellent save from point blank range and another was cleared off the line (it looked over to me but I'm most likely talking shit as the linesman was perfectly placed). The first half was far from one way traffic though, we had a number of equally good chances to score and it wasn't that big a surprise when we took the lead.

We gradually took control from the start of the 2nd half. Paynter's 2nd was an excellent finish and the 3rd was Austin being in the right place at the right time again. Big difference with the chances was that we took them and they didn't. Austin had another good chance towards the end created by Nouble and I'm sure he'll be kicking himself for not doing better - no complaints from me though.

The last 30 minutes was spent ripping the piss non stop out of the Leeds fans. They must have been sick of us by the final whistle as it was non stop. For 30 minutes. Non stop. It was great fun and the highlight of the day.

The other thing that struck me was the massive smile on 1,500 faces as they left the ground, this was the most satisfying result and performance in a very, very long time for me. We've had to listen to the Leeds fans going on and on about how big they are, how we are tin pot, how big they are, how this was our cup final and how big they are. Today's game was a massive fuck you in their direction and it felt good.

Call me a lying cunt, but i started that oooh david lucas, used to play for leeds scum but he's alright now! song, got a load of videos comming up tonight too!

What a day.

1st half was a bit Southampton but Ward had a blinding chance and Austin all but scored straight after Paynter's goal so it could have been 3-3 at half time.

Second half we played them off the park, the build up to the third was a joy and we were toyinh with them by the end, and their fans.  Austin gave the Leeds fan a big smile after he missed the header towards the end, in a sort of so fucking what, we've just trounced you style.  Douglas grew into the game and was running the show by the end, along with Ferry.  Leeds are in trouble, make no mistake, they utterly lost the plot as a team in the lst 15 minutes.  Some of the players getting niggly about nothing challenges, others just went missing and even Snodgrass (who looks a very good player) seemed to turn into an Oxford player by the end.

Got in about 10ish, but took ages to scrape Joe off the ceiling and calm him down enough to get him to bed, he fell asleep whisper-singing "The reds are going up" to himself.

Fucking amazing day! Aside from the obvious stuff, loved the chants from our lot today. Whoever came up with the fire drill chant should get a knighthood. And some form of baronetcy for "We're going to West Ham, you're going to Dagenham". But far and away the best two for me might not have been very original but just to be able to stand in Elland Road and sing "Can we play you every week?" and "Six nil on aggregate" was just superb.

My brother came with me today - he lives in York so we usually use at least one Yorkshire-ish game a season to meet up. Spot on. We got a decent mention on 5 live coming away from the game, something about our impressive rise up the table and how we haven't been in the 2nd division for 10 years, but with Austin and Paynter this might be our year.

Nice one DerbyRed - just wanted to add my thanks. I've got so many memories of being sat - pissed off - in that corner or behind the goal, therefore I'm struggling to take in that you can be in their away end - and be happy......nay, delirious.

I do feel that I've missed out today, but the main thing is that the club I fucking love, maybe, just maybe, have begun the journey towards putting themselves back on the map. After a depressing decade or so it needs a lot to happen before real faith and optimism starts to come back, but big strides have been made in the last year or so.

Just got in from in a night out in London Town.

It's been a savage night. I've been on the Adnams Ales having had a few Tetleys as well in West Yorks, and haven't been able to switch off from the songs, the goals and the great moments from today. Then a Millwall fan made me a nasty cocktail of gin, vodka, and orange juice, and wished us well in going up (as well as wanting his team to go up) so all in all a great night.

I can't get enough of seeing those goals, they're great!

It's great being a Town fan at the moent! Southampton was my favourite away game this season. Until yesterday.
Not only did we finally beat leeds at elland rd, we fucking dubbed them and then rubbed their noses in it. Whole team stepped up yesterday, that's what's needed for the next 7 games. 21 points still to play for, but the simple fact is, if we match millwall and leeds results we're going up.

Manager, players and fans were all brilliant. There was only one club united at leeds and it wasn't the home club!

On a side note, can someone please post simple instructions on how to display a scarve in the rear window of a car? DRS and Leefer spent about 10 minutes attempting this highly complicated task at the services yesterday, but couldn't achieve the desired result......

Getting locked out of the turnstile wasn't fun (the second time I've now done that at Leeds - the queue of 50 odd people at the ticket office needing their tickets re-activated suggests they've got a problem there) but I made it in in time for kick-off.

Initially didn't like being sat right at the front (second row) but it worked out well when Billy and Charlie scored goals down our end in the second half. And I got my mug on the Football League Show as well :)

It still hasn't quite sunk in that we've beaten the dirty Leeds scum twice this season, scoring six goals in the process and conceding none. Unbelievable. Who's the tin-pot club now Leeds United?

I moving this week so had to stay home to pack/clean etc With just a radio for company... Fitton said that the players like and want to play in the blue strip as they have never lost in it apart from fullham... but that wasnt a dissapointing display either.

I watched the goals on skysports news last night. We were shown after the leyton orient game, for some reason, and they went very much on the 'leeds have blown it' angle.

Far from being irritated by the lack of recognition, I welcome it.  This is great news for the club.  I doubt it will last another 7 games, but the fact we're 2nd and that other clubs have not really worked out how/why can only benefit us.

What a great game.

The game was similar to that of our 4-0 defeat at home to Rovers.

In the Rovers game, Swindon were the better team up untill the first goal, but after that Rovers controlled the game

Yesterday Leeds played well for the first 35 minutes, but to be fair Lucas only have to make 1 really good save.  Once we scored we pretty much bossed the game and Leeds never reallly looked like scoring

I just hope we can win tomorrrow, and that the presuure of being 2nd doesnt get to the lads

Nah I don't have a bloody clue mate. Was buzzing beyond words. Still am, I'm at work and just keep bursting out in smiles and goosebumps. What a day.

We were in great voice, came up with some damn funny songs. In comparison to their one dimensional MOT and  that poofy Leeds! Leeds! Leeds! bullshit. This buzz has bugger all to do with beating Leeds. It's the fact we cained a promotion rival after taking a load of their pressure. At their ground and have moved into the autos at almost the perfect time. Gutted that I have to work tomorrow but I'll be listening on the radio.

This is without doubt the best time of my STFC life.

First chance to post about the game:

Don't know how we ended up in the lead at half time. Leeds battered us for 40 minutes. That said, despite all their possession I don't think they created as many chances as they could have done and obviously failed to put away at least three very good chances. I think we had three good chances in the first half, which we put away one. We looked like we could use the ball better when we had it, though to a nervous away fan that seemed all too little often.

Second half was unbelievable. Paynter, who it was clear was having a man of the match performance scored an incredible goal right away. Rushed over to the Town fans with the biggest grin on his face, just enjoying the moment with us all. None of this arms out, point at the back of my shirt, look at me I'm god rubbish (Beckford take note). He was loving it!

From there on in Leeds were throwing everything forward, which inevitably meant they lost concentration at the back. Up pops Austin with the third. After that we restricted them to long shots on goal mostly, Austin had another good chance and Nouble came on late and caused problems. He actually made an incredible run into the box, cut on to his right foot to shoot, then decides to dribble some more! At least it wasted time :)
I still didn't feel safe with 5 mins to go and 0-3 up, which is irrational but indicative of the disbelief of what I was witnessing.

All in all, a gritty away performance, stuck to the tactics well and deservedly won in the end. The difference between the two teams was the fact we have two strikers in great form - the opposition's failed to punish us and then they ran out of ideas.

Here's one for you stat/fact fans: our two 3-0 victories are the biggest aggregate defeats suffered by Leeds in the league since they were relegated :)

Fair play to your team, not just for this weekends result, but for the whole season so far. The turn around from previous seasons is almost beyond belief. Good luck for the rest of this season, and future ones too.

I am hoping that perhaps by now you have realised that not all Leeds fans are 'dirty northern scum' but probably just the same as you and the rest of your teams fans - Passionate and looking for some good banter, no trouble.

Don't know if your guna disappear now you have drubbed us again but thanks for the banter and info. in leading up to the match this weekend, and here's wishing that both Leeds and now Swindon can achieve promotion to the Championship this year.

So, this is the first chance I've had to say anything about the game. Here goes...

The first half hour was all Leeds. They were closing us down quickly and we were giving the ball away cheaply. One Leeds fan on the train said it was like watching Barcelona. He was wrong, it was more like the Southampton game, only Southampton were better. Thankfully they didn't create too many openings, and when they did Lucas got in the way. Then to take the lead right at the end of the half was incredible. We didn't deserve it, but it was a great cross and well finished by Paynter. When we missed a chance just before half time to make it 2-0 I thought we'd live to regret it.

But then Paynter comes along and fires a peach into the top corner. Cracking effort and we all went a bit mental. I was truly in shock when it became 3. How Austin had that much time and space I'll never know, but it was a great move, a lovely cross and a calm finish. Nice to see him lauding it in front of the Leeds fans, many of whom have for a long time refused to accept that he or Paynter would cause them any problems. I can think of 6 problems already this season, and there may be more if both teams were to end up in the play-offs.

The fans were great, even when we were under a lot of pressure, and to be able to taunt the Leeds fans for over half an hour was truly delightful. "Is there a fire drill?" and the West Ham / Dagenham chants were particular favourties, but there was also a LOT of support for the lads. The train journey home was long but more than bearable, although my patience was tried at times by Leeds fans who refused to accept that the team who has beaten them 3-0 on two occasions this season might just have something about them. Nobody is as good as Leeds. If Leeds lose, it is the players' fault, or Grayson's fault, or Bates' fault, or the ref's fault.

2nd place. Wow. Let's keep our feet on the ground, beat Tranmere and hope that Colchester and Yeovil do us some favours!

I didn't even go yesterday but I'm still over the moon about the result!

My little brother was away on a Uni trip with his Leeds fan mate (who thought it appropriate to poke fun at us numerous times this season) but anyway,  texting 1 nil, 2 nil, 3 nil to him provided immense pleasure.  Needless to say the Northern Monkey wasn't too happy :D

I agree to some extent. However, I think there are two factors other than it being the size of Leeds as a club. The first is the fact that we constantly hear their fans going on about how they are better than other teams, and even when they lose so many of their fans refuse to credit the other team with simply being better. You don't have to go onto WACCOE to see it - they've been on Swindon forums, they went on Norwich forums, they're on 606, they text in to the Football League Show. Secondly, it's the fact that we just won 3-0 against promotion rivals to take us to our HIGHEST POSITION IN TEN YEARS. I still can't believe we're in 2nd place, and beating anybody to achieve that would have put a huge smile on my face until 3pm on Monday at the very least.

Well if that other club was 3rd and had been top 2 a lot of the season and we dicked them 3-0 AGAIN to go second with 7 games left then I expected we'd have enjoyed it just as much.

ooh ive finally posted up on here, hi everyone

We would have enjoyed it, but not as much as this.

I think they will bounce back sooner or later and if/when they get back in the Championship they could carry the momentum forward into the Prem. The problem they have is they haven't dealt with where they are and have the mentality that they shouldn't be in League 1 with their 'tin pot' & 'Mickey Mouse' comments. Compare that with other big teams that have dropped to this level, Man City & Sheff Weds, those teams seemed to embrace it a bit more and think 'ah well, some new grounds to go to and let's have a laugh' whereas Leeds fans seem to think they are still in the Champions League and keep harking back to the 60's and 70's teams.

You are where you are and the only teams that deserve to be in the Premier League clubs are the 20 clubs that are there and the same for the Championship. We could easily say on a historic basis we are as big a club as the likes of Wigan, Hull who rattled around the lower leagues for much of their existence but we don't moan about it. Wigan are a well run club and deserve to be there until such time they get relegated.

In all seriousness, Leeds ARE a big club with huge support/stadium and and an illustrious history and tradition. That cannot be denied and I don't think anyone would. BUT the problem I have with them is that they cannot get it into their thick northern skulls that none of this actually counts for anything when you are trying to get out of the third division. It's all about the 11 on the pitch. Nothing more, nothing less.

The other thing is the fact that they absolutely steadfastly refuse to give any credit to the opposition, EVER. If they lose it is always down to the fact that the 'tin pot' opposition raise their game just because it's Leeds and because they (Leeds) were shit not that the opposition played well. Even now, they cannot accept that we are any good.

There are exceptions of course. There are some Leeds fans who are perfectly reasonable and some one posted an example of that earlier. Onverall though, I find them to be increadibly arrogant, ungracious and borish.

Totally agree. On the Football League Show last night tehre was a clip of a Newcastle United fan who had "Championship Tour" on the back of their shirt. Some may say that it was arrogant, but the way I saw it they were accepting their position, embracing a year in the Championship with all the new teams and grounds, and being optimistic about the future. Leeds fans just have a massive superiority complex and won't (collectively) accept their place in this division even if they're here again next year.

Ahhh can't be fucked to read through all these pages. But yeah yesterday was quality. Being sat pretty much right next to the pitch seemed really gay at first but after a few minutes I got right into it and it was great being so close to the action and the Leeds fans. Nothing was better for me that the first goal as strange as it sounds. Leeds fans were giving it large for the first 40 minutes and then we scored and it just burst into chaos. I couldn't help but turn to both sides of the ground and make a point of celebrating that goal just to piss them off. Fantastic. Then Billy comes up with a cracker early in the 2nd half and the home fans have gone totally quiet. In goes another and for a minute it almost felt like it was a dream.

So the Leeds fans began to head to the exits. Then came a range of quality chants like "We're going to West Ham, you're going to Dagenham" and "Is there a fire drill?". I was loving every second off it. Seeing the players at the end was good as well. Billy came over to the fans and got a great reception as he deserved and Charlie decided to join in the celebrations as well.

I think we passed more Leeds fans on the motorway there and back than we did Town fans. Those silly badges they have in their cars must have been given away as freebies or something. We gloated at one as we passed them but let's be honest it would have been a bit boring if we'd have done it to all of them. Oh and I got a classic text from a Leeds fan after the game which read something like "You're shit. Don't even talk to me about that poor football". I've never laughed so much at a text. Great stuff. What a day.

I went to bed last night at half time (11pm here) which really is quite early but I couldn't bear to keep an eye on the text.  I woke up this morning about 6am and lay in bed for what felt like an eternity wondering if we had won, lost or drawn.  When I got up and turned on my computer I just sat there giggling to myself for about ten minutes after checking the result.  Today has been a day of smiles, checking the league table and thinking about how much this result means to me.  I was there when Robinson scored that 95th minute equaliser and this result feels like pay back.  The home result went some way to making up for that game but this game has more than made up for it.

Thanks to the players, thanks to the management and thanks to the board for giving us fans such an amazing season.  It's been years of hurt for the fans, just wish I had been there to savour this victory in person.

When they first got relegated their fans had exactly the same mentality as the Leeds fans have now, the only real difference is that their fans got up to speed a lot quicker than the Leeds fans have. I'm not sure the Leeds fans will ever get it though, some of them still think they'll be winning the Premier League within a few seasons.

Given the size of their fan base and attendances, Leeds have got massive financial resources compared to us plus they wiped out their debts with the administration and Bates buy out a couple of years back. Which makes it all the more unbelievable that they're fucking it up again - they should be walking promotion with the money they've got. Instead they're getting trounced by a team that includes four of their rejects - that has to hurt.

Leeds could do alot worse and actually take a leaf out of Newcastles book.The way they have quietly gone about things this year is an example alot of so called big teams could follow.

You're assuming they have got the money and that those "massive financial resources" are made available to the club and not whisked offshore somewhere. Many Leeds fans seem to have doubts that this is the case under the benign rule of Mr Bates and his mystery owners (who I'd guess see a remarkably similar view in the bathroom mirror to that which he sees)
