Title: 1 year of Danny Wilson
Post by: michael on Monday, December 21, 2009, 10:56:28
...almost.

I make it 64 points from 45 games, with just over half of those games spent clearing up after Malpas.

Did we ever find out why Hartlepool sacked him?

Yes, he wanted to move to a big club.

Wilson has done a steady job...I suppose the sort of thing you might have hoped for from a manager of his experience.

He has got us to the level we should be, namely top ten L1 getting through to 3rd round of FA Cup.

Now comes the hard part, driving this on, without causing a financial crisis.

if you think also of all the dead wood he got rid of in the summer and then had to re build the team and still get us to where we are.

few more signings and i think we could compete for the top two spaces. we've proven to be a decent top 10 team so far and i believe we could easily break into the top two next season if we don't make it through the playoffs at the first attempt.

Hats off to him. He's not only dessembled a shite squad, he's build an excellent one without breaking the bank. He's instilled a belief not seen in a swindon team for years, and yet he still seems far from happy, which says a lot about what he wants to achieve.

More of the same next year Danny please, top work in 2009.

I've not enjoyed going to football for many years.

It was due to them not finishing high enough in the league, think they were expecting top 6 or promotion and he only managed 7th or something. Hopefully they feel really stupid with us being higher than them in the league now.

If that's true then their board must be in cloud cuckoo land as they struggle to get crowds of 4-5,000 and they've mostly been in Div 4.

More likely Chris Turner, who came back as 'Director of Football', wanted his old job back.

For a change, a 100% agree with you Reg. Delighted in our current league position and if we're there or thereabouts at the end of the season, I'll be more than happy.

Are you not thinking of Brighton and Dean Wilkins?

I thought Wilson left and wasnt sacked?

Wilson has done a fantastic job this season.

He is a bit of changling though, a good position at the end of the season and possibly promotion and Danny Boy will probably be given a better offer at a bigger club and he would take it.

How many times has he had the chance to ?

Good point.

I'd like to think DW recognises he's part of a good set up here and believes we're at the start of something pretty exciting. If he does a job here and gets us up, I wouldn't begrudge him the chance to manage in the top flight again.

(Although I would probably)

How many times has Wilson left a club for a bigger job?

Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes and Hartlepool sacked him. Bristol City didn't renew his contract.

Not sure about Barnsley.

Though I really don't think we've got any reason to be concerned about him going to a bigger club. He's doing good for us but not that good and would anyone really want him? Maybe if he gets us in to the Premier League, but the chances of that are 50 miles down the road from remote.

I thought Wilson left and wasnt sacked?

He certainly didn't leave of his own accord though Hartlepool never publicly said the reason why they got rid of him and how, but get rid of him they did. Sacked or paid off, it doesn't really make any difference does it?

Something Iffy certainly went on there.

I remember Hartlepool released a statement saying Wilson had left and it didnt use the term sacked at all, then later on it got changed to say Wilson had been sacked.

This season is the the most enjoyable for years and years. The play-off season under King was good, but I really appreciate what the management and players have done this year, maybe becasue the last 5 years have been so dreadful. We're playing good football more often than not and there's an expectancy again, something we've all had sucked out of us down the years. There are players I actually enjoy watching, like lucas, greer, cuthbert, douglas, austin – players who are not only good but who give a shit. I feel proud of this current team. And I'd say 99% of that is down to Danny Wilson.

Managers come and go from the Football League so often - so it's to Wilson's credit that he has been a manager pretty much constantly since 1994.

I haven't let my guard down, I still find myself fearing the worst - I'm not overly pessimistic, just a victim of the last decade+ supporting Swindon. I imagine I'd be far happier if I went most weeks like I wish I could.

Danny Wilson is definately taking us in the right direction but it appears that Peter Shirtliff is crucial to us too.

I thought that was the scenario with Ronnie Moore and Tranmere in the summer, finished 7th and just missed out on the play-offs on goal difference on the final day?

I just checked the tables for when Wilson was there. He got them promoted to League One and then didn't do well enough for the board - whatever they were expecting, he didn't do. Pretty certain they were above us at the time they got rid of him and not that far off the play offs which was their probably aim.

I'm enjoying my football again and more importantly my daughter is. The good thnig is the intelligence we play with. If a pass doesn't come off you can see what they were trying to do. Wilson has made a load of mistakes since he's been here but the trend is upward and after the complete load of dogshit he inherited that is good enough for me. I go to every game thinking we've got a good chance of winning
Last season we knoew thnigs were going right off the pitch but this season things are going right on it as well. Rome wasn't built in a day and nor will STFC but we are really on the right lines.

One thing that stood out for me from the Trust Q&A that Wilson did just before the start of the season was that when he was discussing the players he'd let go, and why so few replacements had come in at that point, he explained that he was not prepared to employ "thick" players who couldn't take in what they were told on the training pitch and so reverted to unsophisticated type every Saturday. We've had a shedload of them under recent managers, but the emphasis on ball retention and the general intelligence of the team today is a joy to behold. Nice one, Danny.

I reckon next season will be even more interesting as by then all of the squad will be players he's signed or given contract extensions to. There's still a few under contract from Malpas's reign which I'm guessing will be shown the door in the summer - Casal and Aljofree spring to mind, is there any more? Probably Peacock?

A few players doesn't sound like much, but it would mean he could potentially bring in another Cuthbert, Austin, Douglas etc. And if he improves the team the same as he did this summer, then surely the playoffs or even a top two will be in sight?

Title: Re: 1 year of Danny Wilson

Certainly- you've got to imagine Aljofree and Peacock are amongst the better paid players at the club as well.

The progress we have made since the start of the season has been immense. The best thing is that we are turning draws into wins now with Austin and Paynter. We don't look like giving games away late on which used to happen on a fairly regular basis. The concentration levels, bar the odd aberration, have been upped massively and that is down to Danny and his team. It is great to go to the County Ground and almost be confident of seeing a win, I haven't really felt like that consistently (apart from 03-04) for more than a decade. I'm trying to get mates along who have not been for years because it is great to see a team which are moving in the right direction.

I'd love it if we could get to the Play Offs, and if we could be certain of a play off place before the final game of the season at the New Den.
