Title: Swindon's best goals ever
Post by: Panda Paws on Saturday, October 31, 2009, 15:33:46
Can't see that this video has been posted elsewhere, apologies if it has. Part 2 can be found on the related links bit.

Forgotten worldies include Marlon Broomes and Royce Brownlie, but 20 minutes of top nostalgia!

20 minutes?

What's that, 5 goals repeated over and over in slow motion?

Brings back some good memories.

The odd thing is the Ty Gooden Barnsley goal is how I remember the Marlon Broomes Birmingham goal.

Part II. About 3:20 Parkin scores away at Leeds.

Was it Igoe (number 7) who played the ball in? Whoever it was that was one sexy mother fucking killer ball.

Can't believe there are none from Dave Bamber.

I was there when he broke the advertising hoarding above the Town End, would love to see that again. Took them years to do something about it, not sure they've actually fixed it yet - looks like the just covered it up.

But where is Lingy's tee it up and half volley it home against Southend in the 95/93 season?

Or Horlocks right foot slice into the top right hand corner in the same season?

Of course there is very few goals from our Championship winning season of '85-'86 as there was no agreement to TV rights so no TV cameras were allowed.

I'm sure there was a Dave Bamber one in the 80s at the Stratton Bank where he played keep-it-up before lashing it into the back of the net. Can't remember who against though.

A big favourite on mine on there was Charlie Henry's goal against Gillingham in the 1986/7 play offs. Lashed it home then a mental celebration rushing back to the half way line. Can remmeber the County Ground rocking when he scored that one.

lots of goals i'd not seen before on there, as well as plenty i remember only in my brain. awesome.

also my favourite is still parkin's against qpr.

Agreed. I was thinking that in the slow motion replay. Inch perfect pass. I saw Gareth Barry try something earlier today and it went straight out of play.

sublime

Title: Re: Swindon's best goals ever
Post by: jonny72 on Monday, November 2, 2009, 00:58:03
Even now I still find it somewhat surreal that Hoddle played for us whilst he was still a decent player (as opposed to just playing a few extra games in the twilight of his career). I can't see anything like that ever happening again, could you imagine Beckham or Gerrard coming here or any lower division club?

Same goes for Ardiles and to a lesser degree Macari. Nowadays, most fans were pretty happy when Wilson took over, shows just how far we've fallen doesn't it?

Title: Re: Swindon's best goals ever
Post by: blah blah on Monday, November 2, 2009, 10:37:20
I have a vague recollection of a classic counter attack goal from our Hoddle promotion season - I think it was McLaren winning a header on the edge of our area, kerslake feeds Mitchell who lays it off to Ling running down the right, makes ground before curling in a peach of a cross for Mitchell to meet with a diving header into the corner. It probably didn't actually happen like that, but thats how my rosy specs remember it. Cant remember the opposition either, but I hope someone will ?

I'd never seen that goal before. It always seems weird to me, I never really got to see the town when we were good. I can't even imagine the Town of today scoring a team goal that good.

Just looked at part 1. Remeber  the gola against Sunderland like it was yesterday. I was on the Stratton Bank at the time right in line with the shot, & you could see the swerve on the ball. Brilliant. The other goal  that stands out is the Hoddle gola at Wembley. The build up & goal was Brazil like.
The best tho' has to be Coxy vs Fernabache. I know it was only a friendly but that was even better than Gascoignes against Scotland in 96

although ben wah balls wont like to accept it, we have arsene wenger to thank in part for hoddles form and managerial decisions for us.
he changed hoddles way of thining about the game during his time at monaco, and he implemented alot of it here.

Post by: jonny72 on Monday, November 2, 2009, 16:19:16
I may be remembering it incorrectly but the Hoddle moment I always recall....

He was stood just outside the box with the ball at his feet and a row of defenders on the edge of the box. With a single movement of his boot, he flicks the ball in to the air and loops it over the top of the defenders. Then Steve White runs on to it and volleys it in to the net.

Or something like that. Anyone know what the fuck I'm talking about?

Havent seen the clips but is Mark Walters goal in there against Bolton??? towards Stratton Bank!! That was class.

And Horlocks goal against Notts County in 92 season.

Ian Woans goal direct from a corner against cobblers (I think!)

And Bartons goal against Grimsby, Grimsby player got sent off, and match was abandoned due to pitch being too frozen, but the goal was superb!!

And Paul evans goal league two season, thinks against Carlisle in the FA cup! (I think, superb side footed goal from distance!

And Hoddles goal in playoff final, great bit of play, a good little bit of skill from maskall (which you wouldnt have said usually), and a reat bent round the keep shot from hoddle!

Sorry if your clips have included the above

What a great moment that was, good to see the Stratton Bank going mad and I remember that well.

I was on the bank with a few mates right at the back. Behind us up in a tree just near the clock was a bonehead perched pretty precariously on a small branch shouting and singing his tits off ! After Charlies goal when things calmed down a bit we looked back and he had disappeared with only half the branch left !!  We had a look over the fence but no sign of him !... I hate it when people leave before the final whistle !

If any of you havent watched them then watch the Swindon Best ever goals linked at the start of this thread.

And for Simon Cox here are 3 goals of absolute beauty scored by the wee man.

If only more of Don Roger's goals were recorded. His brace against Liverpool in the League Cup spring to mind.  England goalkeeper Ray Clemence was completely bamboozled by Roger's trickery.  When he went on a run, the buzz from the crowd would reach a crescendo.  I have never experienced anything like it since. We used to see Swindon's best goal ever about every other home game.

Indeed it was vs Hull, I played against Paul a couple of weeks before for Hreod Burna against Kingsdown and he did the same in that game 1980.

IIRC it was a near 40 yarder that smacked off the angle of post and crossbar.

Thinking about it - Charlie Henry 80+ minute goal vs Gillingham in the Div 3 play off final second leg in 1987.

Lashed it in to the Stratton Bank end goal from the edge of the area (after we had missed 50 million chance in the match) to force a replay at Selhurst Park.

(I'm sure we had chances to win it after that too. I remember being disappointed as I didn't realise that away goals didn't count as double and I thought we had lost).

Their goal was a belter that night too. Yes I remember we could have won it after that, they were shattered after thinking they'd done the job. I knew it was going to a replay but I gather there were those in the crowd who thought we'd lost on away goals and others expecting extra time!

Not that it would have mattered because being Lou’s team we’d have battered them in ET

They did but the rule was abolished sometime before we played Brighton in 2004. They'd also been experimenting with Silver Goal and Golden Goal in previous years, both of which would have also seen us progress.

I'm not bitter and have pretty much forgotten it.

Bizarrely, they did count in the semi finals of the play offs for the 86-87 season. Gillingham beat Sunderland 3-2 at home in the first leg, Sunderland won the 2nd leg 4-3 at home, so 6-6 on aggregate and Gillingham got through on the away goals rule. Why they had that rule for the semi-finals and not the final who knows, but thank goodness they didn't.

one of the most surreal town games i have ever been to and was a brilliant game.

Here is another to decipher. we scored a 40 yard freekick against someone id like to say wrexham. the ball was closer to touchline and everyone was expecting a swinging cross to everyone waiting on the far side of the box. Instead the player went straight to the near post.

Thats all the info i remember! Was quite an old player.  :hmmm: i keep wanting to say the name paul but just can't think who it was!

EDIT* 40 yards swindon town google search. PAUL EVANS! that was a screamer

Ian Woan?

He scored at a belter away at Wrexham, can’t remember if it was a free kick though

Didn't Jan the Man score a tasty impossible angle goal from a free kick against Mick McCarthys Millwall?

I seem to remember him having a dead ball at the Stratton Bank end, out towards the Arkell's, very close to the goal line. he knocked it across and it beat the keeper, defenders and advancing attackers into the goal.

McCarthy was very magnanimous (NOT!) after the game claiming it was a fluke as opposed to Norwegian Air Force Magic.

That goal is in the you tube compilation on the 1st page, it was the corner of the box but not a free kick, McCarthy said if Jan had meant it then he would bare his backside in a shop window.

He did mean it and MM did not bare his backside....

Ignore my last- not a free kick but a cracking strike after a Paul Bodin free kick.

The ball was close to the corner for the 16 yard box when he hit it.

Around 19:25 on the video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YvUXFEsy_A

Quote from Mr Magnanimous-
Millwall manager Mick McCarthy to state that he would "bare his arse in Burton's shop window" if Fjortoft had meant it.

Edit- Cross post with Mr Venkman.....

I would chant for McCarthy to show us his arse but I would probably loose my lunch.

Two more nominations for STFC.co.uk from me for Part 3. As a Midlands based fan during the eighties I was privileged to witness Colin Calderwood's goal during a 3-2 win away at Notts County - April 1987. From about the centre of the halfway line he chipped the ball over the County defenders ran on to it and whacked it in the net. A superb piece of individual skill from the Fridge. As Summerof 69 says I don't think there is any footage due to TV rights agreements ? Bobby Barnes equaliser away at Birmingham - January 1988 also features another sublime piece of individual skill. The pass that sets him up was also top drawer, I think it was from Kammy. Fortunately there is some footage of this one. Happy days !

I do remember Calderwood doing a chip and run goal but I thought it was in a home game, the ball came out to him about 40 yards or so out and he chipped the ball forward over the defence who rushed out to play the offside trap and Colin got to his own chip and rifled in under the keeper from just inside the box.

I think you are both right. He definitely scored the one as described at Notts County but I seem to recall him trying it again on a few occasions and scoring at least once.

Paul Ince's debut game.

I recall a shout of "go on son, make a name for yourself" from Kinky Tom as Ince came on as a second half sub.

Even now I still find it somewhat surreal that Hoddle played for us whilst he was still a decent player (as opposed to just playing a few extra games in the twilight of his career). I can't see anything like that ever happening again, could you imagine Beckham or Gerrard coming here or any lower division club?

Gerrard and Lampard badly wanted to be managers and I could have seen both of them be player-managers in the championship first but they had the option of making good money in America before taking managerial roles, that wasn't really there in the early 90s.

They kind of spent their final decent years in the US and by 2018 the player manager opportunity had passed.

Not just America now. China, India and the like too.

Plus, so many more back room roles now (probably with better job security than being the actual manager) and not to mention pundit roles aplenty all over the world which probably pay better than managers at the lower levels too.

Also, no idea what (if any) qualifications you needed to be a manager in the 90s compared with now.

Not really the debate we are having - but I put the above (not solely but partially) down as to why there  are still so few black managers.
So many different post football career options these days for ex players.

I think the USA route is getting close to being closed off now.  Most teams are looking to South America/Mexico for their Designated Players, getting in younger talent and paying for it, with a view to resale to Europe/Asia.  Almiron being a prime example from Atlanta.

Think Rooney will probably be one of the last, and Higuain to Inter Miami as they needed some instant name recognition to boost their arrival.

Close, he had a shot from about 20 yards that was just wide, I exclaimed that he could have made a name for himself had he scored it.

I still think it one of my proudest moments, well, ever.

Reminds me of mine, coincidentally when a goal that was mentioned by someone earlier in this thread flew in. As Hockaday's stunning cross-cum-shot nestled in Shilton's top corner and the England keeper remained crumpled on the ground, I shouted: "What's wrong with him? Shock?"

It wasn't that good, but I think it was the only time people around me laughed at a comment of mine. I'm saying it was with me, rather than at me.

Not sure if this has been discussed anywhere but did the williams shot deflect off the cbs head into the top corner? i wasn't directly behind the shot to see properly but the video suggests it might have.

Of the recent goals, Gladwins against 'Dale was a bit special- lovely ball forward from Conroy, sublime knock on from the 'Dale player, collected by Gladwyn, laid off the McKirdy who returned the favor with a cheeky back heel flick which Gladwyn chested down and struck with the outside of his right foot, beating the keeper hands down.
