I'd settle for a scrappy/hard fought win. We need points on the board!! Let's hope this new fella comes good

My prediction is that if Swindon lose, everyone will say; Wilson is a useless cunt and should be sacked, our defence is lacking pace and we shouldn't have let Ifil go, JPM is a twat and is non-league quality, Macklin isn't ready for the first team and we need more strikers.

Whilst if Swindon win, everyone will say; Wilson is a top manager and we're lucky to have him, our defence is starting to gel and looking stronger every game they play, JPM is a gem, we'll lose Macklin to a Championship side before the transfer window closes and the striker shortage has been solved.

Whilst if Swindon draw, everyone will sit on the fence.

I'm really nervous about this and would have been a bit more relaxed should we have not won by
4-1 on Tuesday.  Sets the expectations too high and is more disappointing should we lose.

I'd like to say we will win but going with a 2-2 or 3-2 win.

Any win today would be fantastic. I'll be happy enough with a draw if it's a hard-earned point. I think we should be looking at getting 3 or 4 points on the board over the next two games - they're not easy fixtures but we have to get the season rolling following last Saturday.

Positives:

Despite the first game of the season, we have a defence.

We will be signing one or two more players, ...............possibly Trundle.

We seemed to do better with Macklin than with Obladi Obladah.  Macklin will do well with more experience.

Malpas is in Scotland.

JP and Douglas were quality in the centre, apart from that not too much to shout about.

All of the wide men were poor, Paynter ran his socks off with no end product and the defence were solid without doing anything exceptional.  Lucas did OK, bit flappy sometimes but made a couple of decent saves.

Both teams cancelled each other out and never looked like scoring.

Boring!

Great tackle from Douglas towards the end, Sol would of been proud of that one!

All the joy and charisma of a no score draw. Lucas ok JPM MOM again.  He has to work hard as he is playing for his place every game.  The rest pick themselves every week and it showed in their attitude.
No idea going forward.
Small sqaud mentality.
Franchise were awful but still better than last Tuesday.  We were just as awful.

Two sides cancelled each other out.

Both Franchise players led with their elbows towards the Swindon player. Both missed and took each other out.

Jermaine Easter still dives around...and we looked most dangerous from Morrison's throws says it all.

Title: Re: Swindon v Franchise Offical Matchday Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, August 15, 2009, 17:11:57
Poor showing from Town really, we just didn't look interested.

Lescinel and Macklin were totally off the pace, and there was no service to the forwards all day. JPM played very well coming back and going forward, and Douglas put in plenty of tackles. The strikers had no service today - Paynter and Obladi Oblada had no chance of doing anything with constant long balls over their heads.

Hope Lewington's ok. Don't like the guy but you never want to see serious injuries. It was a bit of a comedy moment though - they both went in hard for a header, Paynter ducked out of the way and they took each other out.

What a load of shit,

Lucas 7 - Look commanding when he came for corners and is a great talker , nearly gifted them a goal near the end but other than that looked solid.
Morrison 6- He is very slow and gets turned easily hopefully he will get better but I still would have kept Ifil as first choice
Greer 6 - again very slow but his positioning gets him out of trouble .
Amankwah 5 - his distribution is shocking at times and went walkabout a couple of times
Lescinel 5 - ditto of above
Douglas 7 - got stuck in and looks to play it simple
Timlin 5 - looked out of sorts today his final ball was poor a lot of the time
JPM 8 - Worked tirelessly in midfield and looked to be the only one trying
Mcnamee  5- poor final ball time and time again and 20 step overs when a shot first time would of been the best option
Macklin 5 - his first touch is awfull but he tries to get back he loses the ball but as mcnamee no end product
Paynter 7 - felt sorry for Billy won header after header first half but there was no cox running onto them, difficult when playing as lone man if you have pace but when you dont have it is almost impossible.

Subs
Obrien 5 - first touch was poor at times and again the end product is not their
Tope 5 - Tried hard but the service he got was shocking

We only strung 5 passes together on two occasions during the 90 minutes the rest of the time is lumped up in the air. Hopefully this is not what we are going to get served up every week otherwise it will be a long season.

JPM MOTM by a country mile today.  He was everywhere, always challenging for the ball and really working hard.  Credit to him today.

Team wise it was a pretty lacklustre performance and as someone mentioned earlier, it appeared that they almost cancelled each other out.

Billy did well seeing as though he still has no strike partner, however needs more support.

Macklin seemed to have an awful first touch and also appeared to be too lightweight, getting knocked off the ball several times.  I was hoping he would be brought off at half time to be honest.  I guess he needs to toughen up a bit if hes going to make the cut.

Lucas I thought did well and commanded his area well, although in all fairness, he didnt have much to do at all.

Back 4 looked ok with Greer winning plenty of headers however Morrison still worries me.  I think some time to settle and he'll be ok.  Certainly looked more solid.

JP was the star of the show in midfield today.  I thought Douglas did ok, but not up to his best yet, think he just needs games and time to settle.  McNamee can be one lazy little sod at times.  If I was DW, I would have brought him off toward the end and stuck on Marshall just to let him know that there is competition for his place.

O'Brien is quick as anything but didn't really have time to get into the game.  Temitope didn't really get stuck in at all but seeing as he only met his new team mates yesterday, it would be unfair to judge yet.  He wasn't far off scoring a header though.

Overall, it was a bit boring, scrappy and neither team looked like they had much about them but i'll take a point and clean sheet from a team who are favoured to be chasing promotion this year.

Just a bore draw really. Neither side looked like scoring and winning the game. We lacked a creative edge and they played for the point. Good to see us get a clean sheet though. I thought we were OK really just need that cutting edge in the final third and we'll be a good side.

Second time ever, we've failed to score in the opening 2 league games...the other being the T*dd season (nb I'm discounting 39/40 as  :hitler: made it a bit pointless)

Like the T*dd season we did at least manage a point....not exactly a surprise though that we look a bit toothless...there is still time to get in a bit of potency up front.

It could be a long old season...

Today just highlighted we desperately need an attacking midfielder and a striker. Of the current midfield only McGovern and Douglas deserve their place. Timlin is a waste of time as really he's just a not so good version of Douglas and McNamee had one of his lazy days. Macklin definitely isn't ready either so a lot of hard work still do for us.

Just came back from the game and was pleasaently surpirsed with Town,

Was the first game in ages where i felt comfortable with the defence, and the addition of Douglas has added the solidity in front of the back 4.

Up front we lacked that cutting edge.

Cant see Franchise having a promootion challenge based on that showing.

Yes but under Macari in our record setting championship season in 85-86 which we set a league record (at the time) points total of 102.... we started with 2 league defeats and only scored 1 goal in those 2 games a 1-0 home defeat to Wrexham and a 4-1 loss at Hereford.

We went on a shit run of 2 wins in the first 8 games, 5 defeats, 1 draw and 2 wins (both by a single goal and neither were clean sheets), with 1 clean sheet from those 8 games and we only scored 6 goals yet conceded 14.

The season is a fucking long way from being over already.

At the end of the day folks we looked very solid in our own half against (I am loathed to admit) a good side that will put a lot of teams to the sword this season.

I bet a penny to a pinch of shit everybody to a man on here would love half of their players in our team.

It was a solid performance and apart from not scoring (thanks Reg, my little ray of sunshine !) we did what we had to do.

I didnt think it was that bad. End of the day its a clean sheet, something we struggled to attain last season. No we didnt really look like scoring but we didnt really pass through midfield we lobbed the ball forward which I don't think is going to work unless we get a decent targetman. We drew 0-0 against a team who will be up there at the end of the season so not all bad.

The "Lesh" has to be one of the worst leftbacks I have ever seen play for STFC though.

Makes me laugh really. You cant expect the team to go from shit to fantastic over night especially as we sold our top goal scorer

some good points today
- Clean Sheet
- Defence looked a bit more solid
- Seemed to be a bit more communication
- Our passing seemed a bit better

I personally am happy with the draw and feel we can push on from this. I guess our expectations were raised with the 4-1 thumping but a decent result against a decent team!

I don't think that Macklin or Timlin will start On Tuesday, expect 4:4:2 with Obladi Obladah up front with Billy.  In midfield, O'Brien, McGovern, and Douglas  plus possibly Macca.  I would worry about the left side, though, with Macca and JFL.  The alternative would be Cuthbert at R.B., Manky in right midfield but that is shades of Gillingaham.

So same defence, and the two strikers that ended the game, with Douglas and McGovern in center midfield, O'Brien right midfield, and somebody ready to immediately replace Macca if he is a lazy sod.

We need three players, a striker (possibly some one in the directors box, Trundle, Ronny Biggs or Kenny Lynch), a left full back and a left midfielder.

Point each was fair I think !

I don't think Franchise look that good though, certainly on that performance and their mounting injuries may see them struggling (I hope). We on the other hand as has been said had very little creativity and will find it tough unless players like Timlin and Macnamee turn it on more than 1 in 5 games.
Pluses though were JPM's performance and general defending.

Thought the Ref was annoying too !

I'd rather not have Lescinel playing on Tuesday - he's looked poor so far. However, I'm not sure if Kennedy is ready yet as a replacement, especially against a team like Southampton. A tough call for Wilson I think.

Not a good game but a clean sheet. Lucas made a couple of good saves. Both full backs were crap and the threat always came down the wings. Greer and Morrison were alright. Morrison is still learning so he should be cut some slack. Douglas was pretty good, put himself about with some good taclkes.Timlin - pretty rubbish. JPM star man by a country mile. I hated him under Malpas but Wilson seems to be getting the best out of him - if only he had a bit of pace. McNamee and Macklin were poor but again lets cut Macklin a bit of slack. Paynter worked bloody hard and will enjoy his pint this evening.
The subs didn't really work. Neither got into the game at al but both are new.
Overall, the team is definitely work in progress.
With the wingers we've got I'd still like to see someone alongside Douglas with a work rate who can tackle. Its a big season for Timlin.
I hope Lewington is OK - that just didn't look good.

I'm a bit 50-50. Came away disappointed, but mainly because it was a crap game. We did look pretty solid at the back and was pleased with that, would have taken the point if you'd asked me beforehand, JPM played well, Greer was solid, Lucas commanded the back line etc etc. But it was awful to watch. It was a crap game between two (on the day) not very good but not very bad either teams. Which doesn't mean we're a not very good team all the time, just we weren't very good today. Or especially bad. I take nothing out of today in terms of how we'll do this season and if I were to there's as many positives as negatives, so I'm not especially unhappy with the result or what it says about chances but I just wish hadn't been there watching it.

Oh and Ince seems to have fashioned a team modelled in the image of the "club" itself - dirty, thieving, whining cheats. Although I hope Lewington doesn't turn out to be a broken neck and that he recovers

JPM was awesome today, not sure I would agree about the defending although we do look more solid than last season.  I thought the ref had a decent game, didn't stand too much messing and was a good communicator, you could hear him all round the ground!  Macklin is a real talent, but just not ready for a striker role, a winger perhaps.  Not sure about the full backs either, I saw nothing in Macca apart from missing a good chance.  Didn't seem to be too keen today.

Not heard anything official but that's what the guy in the ticket office reckoned (and let's face it, that's far more definitive than any official source). Unconscious on the pitch apparently and straight to hospital with suspected broken neck. Although you could see it was something like that, the time they took not wanting to move him, the special stretcher and taking him straight out to the ambulance etc. Like I say, let's hope he's OK, it sounds nasty

Largely agree with that, though I didn't think Franchise were that decent, they were there for the taking, I thought. However the display by Town today was similar to the Cardiff friendly - solid and effective - which makes me think even more that Gills last week was just an aberration

I lost count of the number of corners Franchise had but not once did I panic too much unlike, conversely, last year where every set piece looked a certain goal.

Obviously we need a striker and Tope didn't impress me too much, maybe due to last minute nature of us signing him and he needs time to gel, plus he didn't really get much service

Exactly, he had bugger all service except for long balls going over his head. Even the ones he could get to, he had no chance against their centre back. It's not fair to judge him on today's performance, hopefully we can actually play soem football on Tuesday and see if he's any good then.

erm i wasn't overly impressed by either team, but i think MK provided more threat through their pace in either half than our relatively controlled stuff in the first half, the lump ball to our confused strikers in the second.

I've tried to read through the thread, but I'll probably restate some points anyway.

There seems to be a lot of negativity around (particularly from those who listened to the Radio, so not sure if Hadwin was in a mood) but I thought that was a lot more like I was expecting our season to be- solid at the back, lots of pace in midfield but no real cutting edge up front. I'm glad Lewington was reasonably okay, was too far away to see the aftermath of the injury but worrying to see all the stretchers and medics on the pitch for so long.

The Team:

Lucas: Pretty good, a few smart stops, good kicking and dealt with crosses very well. 7

LJF: Casual. Very casual at times. Looks like a good athlete but prone to a spot of the Rio Ferdinands 4
Amankwaah: A bit like LJF but better going forwards so he gets 5
Greer: Reads the game well which is essential considering how slow him and Morrison are 6
Morrison: Alright really, thought we wasted the throws though 6

Macklin: Ran around and tried things which didn't come off, I think one or two good games and he'll be away 5.5
McNamee: Similar to Macklin except without the excuse of being a youngster. Had one chance which he should have done a lot better with in the second half 5
JPM: MoM and rightly so, work rate immense, passing good, nearly scored another blinder 8
Douglas: Will pick up a lot of yellow cards but looks a really good player 7
Timlin: Not great, not terrible. Gave it away occasionally then subbed 5

Paynter: Worked hard, didn't really get the service. Clearly would prefer to play with a partner, occasional flick ons to nobody 7

Subs:

Toby (The guy from Bolton) Looked quick and tried hard, not really enough time to judge 5.5
O'Brien: Stupidly quick, otherwise looked poor 5

I think the radio negativity is more to do with the fact is was boring as fuck to listen to. The forever wait with Hadwin rabbiting about how terrible it is that someone is injured badly blah blah blah didn't help. After a while I was hoping the physio would trip up and stamp on the blokes throat or something just so there'd be an event to liven things up.

Nemo I pretty much think your summing up is spot on, and in reply to Bennett I didn't hear anybody booing Macklin.  The boy tried hard, but I fear will not be ready just yet for League one action.

up where we were people were definitely giving him a hard time. the lad clearly didn't bring his first touch with him yesterday but when he went off i thought we lost any sort of threat. he was the only person trying to link up with paynter before lump-ball started

And a draw was a good result. If it had been 3-3 people would be saying it was a great result.

he didn't make the most of the situations true, but i don't think you can say he did as badly as o'brien who doesn't appear to have the ability to pass or control a ball

I think the team is better than the same time last season. It sounds stupid, but I maintain that win against Tranmere was a fluke, showed our true standard a week later at Cheltenham.

On tuesday our wing play was excellent, we got to the by line at will. McDons came down with a game plan to make sure they didnt get badly beaten again and it worked. They sat on the game. Most teams wont do that at the CG, we will see some decent games this year. They were determined, but we didnt hit them hard enough in the first 10 minutes, we need to set the tempo.

Lescinel is your typical gallic shrug man. He is so relaxed it is unreal, even when he's getting himself into real trouble. He does have good physical strength, good jump, fairly fast, not that bad on the ball, but he looks like he doesnt have a care in the world. Please dont confuse Lescinel with Amankwaah. They swapped over at one point and Gazza's fat mate said that Lescinel wasnt so bad after all, not realising it was Kevin Amankwaah.

Fans have got to give Macklin a chance. He looked so much more nervous than on tuesday night. He probably has nightmares about that Leyton Orient sub appearance. He had 2 bad touches that game and took the full force of the crowds frustration. Please give him some encouragement! He will be a good player. Fans need to lay off O'Brien as well. Both confidence players who could be very exciting.

Timlin went missing a bit. Average performace. If he gets stuck in the first 10 minutes, the whole team seems to follow, but he misfires too often. Easton must come into contention soon? McGovern was good, he was excellent on tuesday and good yesterday. But him behind Billy Paynter is too defensive at home if the opposition are trying to stifle the game.

McNamee drove me mad doing those step overs when he could have had the ball in the box. But he did get back and do a slide tackle in the first half, which was noted!

Dissapointed only a hanful of us chanted 'let him die' at Lewington as he was stretchered off. Football traitor.

This is my synopsis on proceedings yesterday....

Good point earned, let’s not forget Franchise are a tough unit to beat, just because we stuffed 4 past them in the week didn’t mean we'd score 5 yesterday. I'm sure a lot of thisis comments section posters will be calling for Wilson's head again, because they were convinced about us dishing out a beating.

Jean-Francois looks terrible, he got totally the wrong side of the Franchise player at the start of the 2nd half which called Lucas into action with a smart save. He's either going to grow into a good player, or he's going to be uncovered as an embarrassing footballing hoax.... like Ali Dia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Dia)

Macklin looks like he's going to be a good player, but I think to expect him to deliver now is putting too much presh on the guy, so I don't honestly think he should be starter. Saying that, when he went off all Swindon's attacking involvement kinda dissipated.

JP McGovern was outstanding again, fantastic commitment and desire. Timlin was the opposite, disappearing for long periods, offering no creativity or attacking impetus. I await a thread to be started called 'Which creative midfielders should we sign' because we soooooo desperately need someone to take the ball early, turn, pass to feet and move into space, like Hazard/McLoughlin. But of course there are loads of them waiting around to be snapped up, in fact there is a tree opposite my house that literally grows them.

Douglas showed the reason why he's in the midfield, he's there for tough tackling, tracking back and yelling, very loudly.....

O'Brien looks a comedy footballer, lots of pace and no confidence, he reminded me of Dean Hooper.

The Dongs came purely not to get beat after the midweek hammering, if we'd been playing any other team I think we would've won it.

A point was fair enough. (but we could’ve so won it when JP's excellent shot was cleared off the line....)

PS, I'm eating a FAB ice lolly, since when did jokes disappear from the sticks?

Franchise manager Paul Ince told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I'm proud of the lads, they were fantastic today, every one of them.

"The game stopped for 15 minutes and it's easy to lose concentration and worry about what happened.

"But in all honesty, we were the best side by far."

"But in all honesty, we were the best side by far."

The scoreline suggests otherwise Mr Ince.

The scoreline suggests otherwise Mr Ince.

So does the performance of his team.

I thought MK executed their gameplan better than we performed but I don't think their performance was better, certainly nothing to write home about.

The highlights are there. You have to laugh at the reaction of the crowd to the injury. "Waheyyy!"

Thats about the only noise though.

When McGovern had his shot cleared off the line you would be forgiven for thinking there were about 40 fans in the south stand!
