I thought Wray and Fitton each had the best part of £100m each as well, which would put them in there as well surely?

I see Cheltenham's big money man, Simon Keswick left them today.

FourFourTwo killed off the Swindon articles pretty quickly - I can't see this sponsorship going beyond the Summer.

I saw a little article about running the club in the rich list. But i emailed them about the lack of stuff on town and they haven't replied and that was last monday.

Indeed. First thing I do when I get my copy is look for an STFC related story. There's been fuck all in the last 2/3 issues though. Maybe they only wanted to write about us whilst Malpas was in charge??

what can you write about a poor team going nowhere that's safe off the field? we're probably one of the most unremarkable teams in the country. we're the new rochdale.

but they could find ANY story within the club? Player interviews at the very least, been dissapointed there has been nothing recently. Article about hazard the other day which i thought they were passing off as the swindon related thing?

We should put a bid in for Kaka then if we have that much money.

You make a good point, we're not exactly newsworthy, but why bother at all then? I thought (potentially misguidedly) that this was an opportunity to get an insight into the behind the scenes goings on at the club?

But surely the sacking of the manager, the appointment of DW, DB's time as caretaker, the hunt for new players, the hunt for a new manager - the trials and tribulations of a fl club

These are all writeable stories that would show what goes on in the background of a normal football league club which is why I thought they took up the sponsorship in the first place so they could get these type of stories.

That'll be the economic crisis that will. Not enough ink to write up all those stories.

We had more ink (and better weather) under the tories!

We only need a play off worthy team and then we are worth writing about. Our fans get excited.

But this season has been a bag of shit. Barry Corr against Rovers one of the few highs.

See I got to be honest. I thought Tranmere was crap. I think everyone was suprised, but I dont think many people genuinely believed we were that good. I say that because it was the worst opening game atmosphere I have ever experienced at the county ground.

That was the first game with everyone in their new seats, I think most people realised after that that the town end had lost half it's noisy patrons to the DRS.

For it needs to be remedied next season, the TE has not been good this year.

Fair point...but then nor has the football....the Leicester fans on there forums said we were the loudest fans theyve heard away....basicly the footys been so shit no one can be bothered anymore..it gets to the point ware the players need to stir the fans and against Leicester it was a stirring performance.

axs, I think its a bad excuse and people are making too much of it.

In the late 90's the south stand used to be loud. It projects sound a lot better than the Town End and we really used to see off quite a lot of good away supports even though the team were crap.

I think the Town End actually lost most of its noisy patrons about 3 years ago. Whenever I went in there I stood in around the same place, like a terrace, but first game against Luton 3 years ago this woman started shouting that she had bought 3 seats for her kids there. She was right, and we moved. But I didnt go back for a long time after that. Im not going to get a season ticket next year so il be in there a few games (hopefully!). I know a lot of others who felt that sort of thing was the last straw for the Town End.

Didn't we go about 10 years without having home fans in the Town End, or parts of that period where it was a family stand?  Not sure how all of a sudden the season ticket deal is to blame, we managed to be a tad noisier then than we are now.  I just think everyone has been drained over the past 3/4 years and it's finally hit a few people, that even with sound back office chaps, we are a bit shit right now.  The clubs been dragged through the coals and it seems it's going to take a while for us to recover - reputation clearly goes a long way and ours has been a bad one, culminating in last seasons near implosion.  Probably quite a few agents and clubs got burned by us, and even with new owners, mud sticks.  Until people beign seeing something resembling half decent football, it's going to be an odd ground to be at I think.  It's a shame that we can't just get on with being fans, but we have probably got too many people who by necessity had to get to close to what was going on at the club.  I suppose that helps drain the lifeblood by making everyone skeptical and too quick to focus on the bad.

I agree 100%. End of last season it was pretty obvious the way things were going.

People thought we would get good signings, but they never came. Deep down most fans could see a struggle. But its been the effort from the players thats really killed it.

Nottingham Forest, Malpas' first game. 11 players running their socks off, resulted in a great atmosphere. Never got near it since.

as always robt you make valid points with reason.but fans need hope and optimism.stfc are not giving their fans this.fitton at this moment in time doesn't seem anything like a chairman of a up and coming football club.

We aren't seen within football as a progressive or ambitious club.Lots of fans of other clubs are
completely unaware that we even have new owners.

If we had been pouring all resources into a ground redevopment, i could understand the board's
priority for that. We're miles away from that at this moment in time. Therefore, they should have
understood that to take us forward it needed ongoing investment into the team.It was crying
out for this last summer. We can't keep on relying on freebies and 50K signings each close season.

The next 2 weeks will really show us if the board have any ambition,or are they just obsessed with
budgets. It's all well and good to be a well run club, but do we really want to never take a chance?

Robert T's comments are spot on and he managed to neatly sum up my thoughts, without me even realising I'd been thinking that way in the first place, the cunt ;)

The whole fucking STFC experience is jaded at the moment despite DW's arrival.

I don't expect the board to puke cash all over the place for loads of new players, but we're in serious need of a cunting great injection of enthusiasm from somewhere. It's up to the board to get the place buzzing again by making a signing or two that has people sitting up and taking fucking notice after their self inflicted Malpas fiasco.

Fans can only do so much in trying to create an atmosphere, for fucks sake.

That's fair enough, I've not been going to games that long, I've never heard the south stand make noise in my time. The TE just feels so quiet this season compared to the last two.

Title: Re: fourfourtwo
Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 19, 2009, 19:20:29
The lack of atmosphere is not just the town end's problem. I know many say the pricing structure has messed up the atmosphere. I think it's the depressed nature of the town fans. Those that used to make noise in the TE who moved no longer do so and those that stayed in the TE no longer do so either.

Obviously I'm generalising the extent and scale of that as doubtless there are still people that sing. There's just no unity any more.

The next issue of 442 will have an article on Danny Wilson.

Hopefully that will put an end to the anti 442 sentiment :)

Whilst I am on the subject of Club Partners: Nuffield Health is really busy at the moment and I am finding it very stressful trying to complete all my cardio work :(

The problem with the Town End is it can sound loud if you're in it, but projects noise so badly that much of the effect is lost.

I'm quite sure that there will be major changes at that end of the ground in the future...it would be very easy to take the roof off, add more seating/hospitality behind it and then put a new roof on.  All of which will probably improve the accoustic, but will change a much loved structure that, aside from the addition of seating, has remained largely unchanged for 50 years.

Post by: Arnold.J.Rimmer on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 17:34:02
I always thought the Town End had great accoustics. You can hear it easily from the opposite end of the ground, plenty of videos on youtube to testify to that

I thought that was the idea behind it, yes. And the fact that we are a totally mediocre club was what drew them to us. As has previously been said though, it would not surprise me if the deal gets knocked on the head in the summer.
