Title: Danny Wilson - New Swindon Manager?
Post by: swindonbob on Monday, December 22, 2008, 23:13:21
I'm not usually a "rumour starter" but just had a phone call from a mate, who had a phone call from someone at "Swindonweb" saying Danny Wilson has been offered the job....

So just checked it, and at the top on the scrolling banner it says the following:

BREAKING NEWS 8:55pm: It's Wilson! Former Hartlepool Former Hartlepool manager Danny Wilson has been offered the Town job today, SwindonWeb understands. Chief executive Nick Watkins earlier described him as a man of '... great character'

http://www.swindonweb.com/

and a link to a story earlier in the day:

Thanks for sharing bob, I think we are all probably too cynical about these unsourced rumours now.

Be interesting to see what comes out in the morning.

Yeah I think everyone has grown a bit immune to these rumours now....but its still exciting to see yet another name down in "internet based text"!!

For what its worth though, Swindonweb are usually pretty reliable.....

Danny Wilson's backroom staff is interesting....

I think I am right in saying that Danny Wilson doesn't have a regular entourage.

Danny Wilson's assistants...

Eric Winstanley at Barnsley
Peter Shreeves at Sheffield Wednesday
Frank Barlow at Bristol City
Ian Bowyer at Franchise
Ian Butterfield at Hartlepool

I don't really have a point other than he's a decent 3rd tier manager who won't appear to insist on a particular coaching staff.

As people have said, hard to believe any rumours at the moment.

I wouldn't mind Wilson - reasonable record at this level

He's managed at this level twice; four years with Bristol City, at the end of which he left them where he found them, still at this level, and the job at Hartlepool he just got sacked from. Now I'll admit the Hartlepool sacking seems a bit premature, but that's hardly a sparkling record is it?

I'd be a bit disappointed if it was Wilson.

I'd be a bit disappointed if it was Wilson.

Dissapointed but relieved it was all over and we can get on with looking forward to games again.

Wouldn't be my choice, but at the moment I feel the need for a new manager is so great I am happy to take him and hope he can get us back on track.

Wilson is experienced...a patchy record, but it does include keeping the Dongs up when going there in December when they were in the bottom 3.  It was the following season he took them down.

And I'd just like to say, I'll eat my left foot if we get a managerial appointment today.

(That worked on Saturday when I turned to my missus and said I'd eat my right foot if Timlin scored that freekick thinking there was no chance in hell it was ever going to happen.)

(I think I've written this before) but it's an interesting fact that the first living person to be mentioned in a Beatles song was....

Mr Wilson.

Second was Mr Heath, but don't think Colin's ready for a managerial role just yet.

For the benefit of Tom Kite eh???  That song contains my surname Reg, although I don't think John had the pleasure of meeting my clan before he wrote "the Hendersons will all be there".

Also wasn't the Sgt Pepper album released after Revolver?

They would have gone down that first season but Wrexham went into receivership and had a 10 point deduction imposed.

I'm sensing here you're not a Wilson man...nowt wrong with riding your luck, who knows maybe someone will go tits up this season and keep us up.

Hmmmmm. I'm not really that comfortable with relying on it as a strategy. Could we just win a few more games instead?

Unlikely have you seen our sack of shit lately...I suppose Wilson might bring in Monkhouse...and the two brick shit house centre halves who look like they're out of Right Said Fred.

Apart from taking Barnsley to the Prem for the first time in their history and getting Hartlepool promoted at the first attempt from league 2 and getting Brizzle Shitty to the play offs twice I think.

He has managed in all 4 divisions , he likes to bring through youth and plays attacking football the right way and is loyal looks like he ticks all Fittons boxes for me.

Quote
With no official announcement as to the reasons surrounding Wilson's removal as manager at Victoria Park, Turner admitted he too was unable to comment.

"The situation is contractual between the club and Danny," he told BBC Tees.

This could suggest that dear old swindonweb could be jumping the gun if there are still issues between Wilson and Hartlepool.

Unfortunately IOB, there are "fans" out there who would run any manager down, especially if his cousin's wife's uncles, stepfather's half-brother once drove past the Kassam during a youth team fixture there!  I say just get the best man for the job, which basically is what AF is doing I guess!

He had Barnsley playing some very attractive football when he took them up as well. "It's just like watching Brazil" etc etc etc... And in the process he became one of the most coverted young managers in the football league.

I wouldnt mind him coming here really..

Think Lumps will point out that he basically sank the Wendies into the shit, from which they've yet to fully recover...to completely ruin a decent club does take a bit of doing. Which explains why no-one above L1 will touch him with a barge pole.

Wasn't there a lot of background stuff going on with the Wendies? I don't know - hence me asking - but didn't they have all sorts of financial problems/internal divisions for years?

Think he mainly got rid of Di Canio and Carbone, and replaced them with duffers like Simon Donnelly and Gerald Sibon, also Wim Jonk looms large in the lexicon of Wilson bad business.

Di Canio clearly wasn't the easiest man to manage, but I'm sure if you'd have told him how much you fancied Allesandra Mussolini he'd have don ethe biz for you.

he told the kitman to hang Di Canio's shirt upside down from the light fitting - drove him mad

Didn't they need to get rid of them though to get them off the wage bill? Seem to remember Carbone nearly took Derby (or was it Bradford?) to the wall by himself due to his wages a few years later
