Alan Pardew for me - has been made available after Fitton got down to his shortlist, done well at Reading, didn't quite go right at Charlton but I think he'd do a good job (along with about half a dozen other managers I can mention) and I'd be surprised if he wasn't willing to manage at this level again for a club with ambition.

Derek McInnes at St Johnstone looks like a top prospect although to be fair he's only in his first season as a manager. Well worth a look though.

Can't see Fitton risking another from north of the border to be honest Dazzza

I don't think Fitton would risk his reputation on appointing someone with little experience as he would get crusified if it all went wrong again.

Title: Re: Please appoint Danny Wilson
Post by: Dazzza on Monday, December 22, 2008, 16:57:32
I couldn't imagine McInnes accepting either to be honest.  First season and all that in charge and he’s looking odds on at the Scotch Premiership next season while we’re sniffing down the barrel of League two.

On the other pair I know it sounds fucking atrocious and just a little bit greedy but I can’t see the value in either Pardew or Wilson.

Pardew especially who has all the charisma of a steaming donkey turd and has managed to trade off that decent season and a half at Reading in the late 90’s for far to long.  Danny “Bloody” Wilson is a different kettle of fish but I’d be twitchy appointing him off the back of his record of relegating struggling teams in this league alone.

That said he has at least been fairly consistent over the years and if he managed to stave off relegation he’d probably keep us pottering around mid-table for a good few seasons in this league.  He just doesn’t inspire confidence that he can ever get out of this league although perhaps given where we are that’s being a bit greedy.

Can anyone quote me an example from this clubs history of us getting success from appointing one of the list of usual suspects (by which I mean the journeymen lower league managers that never seem to be out of work for long, moving from club to club every couple of years without any really impressive results)?

I'd guess you'd have to go back as far as Danny Williams before you found a period of sustained success under a man with any history of managing elsewhere, although Reg might be able to tell us better; were we any good under Fred Ford, he had at least one decent league finish?

There is the promotion under Sturrock to consider, but that was just bringing us back out of a league a club of our size should never have dropped into, was given a head start by Wise, and seemed to do it playin a fairly prosaic style of football that didn't seem to excite many people.

In my Swindon supporting life we've had a manager that seemed to transform the team radically four times, under Macari, Ardiles, Hoddle and Wise. To a lesser extent there was also Macmahon, who I didn't like as a man or in terms of his footballing philosophy, but who got us out of this league at the first time of asking using players like Mark Seagraves and Steve Finney who've never played as well for anyone else either before or since.

Anyway a bunch of high profile players in their first jobs in management. Each was a risk, and it doesn't always work out, as it didn't with Dave Mackay or with Les Allen, but when it does work it really works. It does excite people, it gets the crowds in, but most importantly it's our only chance of getting someone who's actually good at the job.

Look at the list that were picking through here otherwise. Blokes that have spent 10 years being mediocre in Leagues 2 and 3, on the back of having had one season of sucess with one club back in the 90's; others that have spent a season here, half a season there with a few championship clubs. Danny fucking Wilson.

Fuck I'm depressed

Title: Re: Please appoint Danny Wilson

The cold light of day is that we are league one club. Some fans still think we are a Championship club, we are far from it. No doubt given the right backing and investments there is a good potential here to be a Championship club and therefore we will only attract the mediocre managers or ones starting off, sometimes we will get lucky with those (Macari et al) and sometimes not (Iffy).

I think Danny Wilson is a manager who is within the upper bracket of what we could expect to get here. He has managed in the Premiership with big clubs with high expectation and large fan bases. He has promotions and relegations under his belt and I do not see that a manager with relegation experience is a bad thing.

At this stage we do not need a nother punt at an unexperienced manager. You want examples of managers being appointed from the usual lit who have had success but you dismiss Sturrock, who was on that list you mention and that is the only success this club has had in the past 10 years.

To have success you need consitancy, both in players and/or managers and those most successful have either one or both of those qualities. Danny Wilson in my opinion, along with some others will bring that to this club alongside Fitton. This isn't a time for inexperience.

 I didn't think you're a Wilson man.

A couple of points....Fred Ford, was reasonable, we did win the Anglo Italian Cup, and nearly made it up to the top flight....had there been playoffs, who knows as we were a cracking cup side then. But he inherited a great team, certainly in the top 3 of all time STFC sides.

At the moment we're between a rock and hard place....the available evidence suggests that to move forward, you need someone with drive and ambition, the sort of thing that gets knocked out of you after years of journeyman kicking around the lower leagues. Can you really see a Wilson putting in the hours?

Against that with a poor squad, we need someone who immediately knows what they're doing, energy and enthusiasm wont be enough to get us out of this mess.

The best way forward might be something like the Hockaday/Birkenshaw double act.

IMO I think that the manager situation here is only 10% of the problem the other 90% is the shit that turns up every week to play.

Title: Re: Please appoint Danny Wilson
Post by: janaage on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, 10:46:23
So what your saying is maybe the players come on here and have  taken the tef tag line a little far.  I mean 25% football and 80% bollocks on the pitch isn't really gonna get us very far is it?

Title: Re: Please appoint Danny Wilson
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, 10:49:36
IMO I think that the manager situation here is only 10% of the problem the other 90% is the shit that turns up every week to play.

So the shit has to be replaced, unfortunately this is not easy when the club wont pay the going rate...think back to the summer and the lad Jones from ManUre....he had a choice of here or Hpool under Wilson...did he choose them because of DW. Of course not, they pay more.

BTW this isn't a criticism of the Board...there's no point in us ending up not being able to paybthe players again.

In order to stay up, it might be necessary to cash in on Cox and use some of the money to strengthen in a couple of other areas.

Title: Re: Please appoint Danny Wilson
Post by: Dozno9 on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, 10:58:13
Using your views though we sell Cox and the money will go to waste as we aren't paying the going rate. We would then just be in perpetual downturn. I think we do pay the going rate, maybe not compared to Man Utd reserves but certainly when you look at Cox, Macnamee, Timlin, Aljofree who all were now doubt on good money and we have signed those players. We miss the ability to spot a good player and that has been missing since Kingy left.

Lets face it Harold Fucking Wilson would be better than Dave Byrne and Adi Williams we just need a manager quickly if it is an ex Brizzle Shitty manager then so be it, other than Oxford  I dont care where any manager has been before. Although I do partly agree with the fact that during some of our most successfull years we have appointed untried big names so a Sheringham or Shearer would be superb but the difference now is these guys have made so much money that managing a div 3 side looking like getting relegated is not really an attractive proposition.

Aljofree was signed by the previous regime...Timlin probably didn't have too many options...Macca and Cox clearly have been paid the going rate, as headline signings, but the budget doesn't stretch to similar quality in the rest of the squad.

Kingy for all his qualities as a scout, never managed to get us a real steal, by which I mean the likes of Martin, Dykes, Opara...who came from non league.

As things stand we need a goalkeeper, centre half and midfield general type.

For all his quality we can live without Coxy, esp if Bazza can get up to speed.

Look at swindonweb and their exclusives, bless.

History repeating?

Is Ken Bates about to nick Wilson from under Town's nose?

SwindonWeb understands that the Town board have offered former Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson the Swindon job - but Leeds United, who sacked Gary McAllister on Saturday, have also targeted him to potentially take over at Elland Road.

It is believed Wilson has slept on the Swindon offer and will be making a decision today based on a formal approach from the Yorkshire side.

If Wilson is snatched from Town's grasp by Bates, it will be the second time Swindon have lost out to Leeds in recent years, after management duo Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet were persuaded by Bates to join Leeds in October 2006.

It is understood, the financial package on offer at Leeds is more than double that at Swindon.

Leeds United announced profits of £4.5 million pounds for the past season on 27 November 2008.

HELP!  We need somebody
HELP! Not just anybody
HELP! You know we need somebody NOW!!!!

When we were better, so much better than today,
we attracted Hoddle, and Ossie down our way,
but now those days are gone, our supporters are getting bored
It feels like ages since someone else than Coxy scored

Help me if you can, We're going down
And we need to get more supporters in the ground,
Won't you listen to matches on Wiltshire Sound
Won't you please, please help STFC?

We need a manager, and not anyone will do,
Someone to get rid of Dave Byrne and his crew,
That Granville fella seems so wrong that he gets his pay
Won't Fitton just decide to employ Ian Holloway,

Help me if you can, We're going down
And we need to get more supporters in the ground,
Won't you listen to matches on Wiltshire Sound
Won't you please, please help STFC?

(okay the Coxy bit was a bit of poetic license)

Without Cox we would go down, no question. Corr is a waste of space who needs shifting asap. The squad is shite with a few shining lights. How many of our team, let alone squad would get in other league one teams, very few. We need more than a few signings we need wholesale changes.

I quite like Barry Corr. I know he has his injury problems but I'd certainly say he was worth the risk (Obviously I don't know what his wage is like but I'd say we have a strong bargaining position). I thought he was our best player against Bristol Rovers.

If you stretch back far enough, there was a time when Barry Corr was seen by many as our greatest hope as we got promoted out of League 2. He's not become a bad player, he;s just never available. Whether he's worth the risk is debatable

No, that was an example that he still has some of what he certainly had when he first came here.

While his wages are probably pretty high now I'd wager if he wants a new contract he'll have to come down a bit as his injury record will scare off a number of clubs in the current climate. I'd rather have a Corr than a Sturrock for example, although I'm sure wage wise they don't compare.

Whether the risk is worth it depends on what the outlook is for him injury wise and how well he plays for the rest of the season, but he certainly isn't the first player we need to get out of the door.

And Jamie Vincent who hasn't played all season seems to have been deified by some on here. Corr's record is poor yes, but if he can get fit for a while he is a damn good player. Hopefully once he gets a run he can put the injuries behind him.

I guess we can all agree that a fit Barry Corr would be an asset.  But frankly, unless he goes injury free from here until the end of the season, we should get shot.  If we want a striker who gets injured, why not just get Parkin back?

Although for what it's worth, I quite like Paynter.

But Vincent has had many, many years as a pro without issue, Corr has played 38 times in 3 1/2 years.

How can Cox have more assits?

Has he been assiting himself, who else bloody scores apart from him?

I think you can also say that Vincent has had one injury he's getting over whilst Corr has had countless different injuries.
I'm quite happy to defiy Vincent - he's earned his crust.

When I last checked they had equal assists, but that was a few weeks back. I think I raised the point that our front pairing had more assists in the league than the entire midfield put together!

Trevor Benjamin doesn't have as many assists in his entire career.

How many games has Corr been available to play though?

JPM had the highest league assists for 2 years running before he joined us, that soon stopped.

My point is that he's not always injured, he's often just on the bench or not selected.

Surely there can't be many times when he's been fully fit and not selected in the 16? TBH I don't know, but I agree that a fit Corr is a good player but I feel his wages could be used elsewhere.

The stat used was played 38 games though, doesn't count the times he was on the bench.

I've yet to see enough from him, even fully fit, that makes me thnk he is good enough to take us places. He provides cover and minimum competition for a position.

Bournemouth goal was a cracker mind.

I was talking to Richie Humphreys of Hartlepool today, it didn't even cross my mind to ask him if he knew what Wilson was going to do next (on the off chance). I would have had an actual football source, my big moment and I blew it like Devon Loch. Shit.

I think to be fair a fit Barry Corr can cause problems if he can stay fit and get a run of games to get his match fitness back then I think he can be a good asset, it is about taking your chances when they are presented and with Paynter suspended it is a chance for Corr.

Unfortunetly though if he does keep picking up nigling injuries then you can only see him dropping down the leagues to play and get regular football and have to build his reputation up again.

The niggling injuries is probably where he isn't match fit, plays 1/2 an hour and then don't play again for a few weeks, there isn't any reserve team football either, if he can get a run get match fit then there will be no excuses.

He probably needed to go out on loan when the chance arose for fitness but it didn't happen.

Barry Corr should probably not wear ice skates if selected for future games. This choice of footwear didn't work on Saturday.

Oh that pisses me off when pro's wear the wrong boots for the conditions, do they just go out on the pitch pre match for a laugh or something?
