Title: Favourite Radio Station(s)
Post by: Amir on Friday, April 8, 2005, 13:31:05
Got to be Radio 2 for me(except Ken Bruce  ).  Sometimes switch to Radio 1 if Jeremy Vine is getting boring, but I just can't stand any of the presenters.

Classic Gold for the van, so me and my workmate can do max & paddy :)   And 1xtra sometimes at home, as long as they aren't playing garage.

Oh, and a bit of Classic FM if I'm driving alone and pissed off.

Best one in the world is Triple J in Australia.  Best one in Britain Virgin, just wish it was on FM.

Radio 1 is horse shit.

1. Radio 2 - It's what we listen to at work and as stfcfan says - steve wright - classic!
2. ClassicFM - Just quality. I love my classical music so listen to this loads
3. FiveLive! - Equally good, perfect to get full share of news etc

Pretty much something for every taste in that little list i would think!

Radio1 has some good stuff on it, Moyles is good, also Huw Stephens, the breezeblock, fabio and grooverider, even Zane lowe is ok. Don't like radio 2 and every single commercial station is absolute shit.

Unortunately mine too, Ken Bruce for his pop quiz and Tony Blackburn on a Friday evening are my faves! yes I am old.

Otherwise I tend to listen to Absolute 80s or Heart 80s when out in the car.

I'd pay the BBC licence fee just for the radio.  Big part of my life.  Radio 6 most often, but also a frequent Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4 & Radio 5 listener.

I'm a little younger than you mate but I do like a bit of Ken Bruce - I'm not great at Popmaster! and Tony Blackburn. I quite like the Friday night whizz through the generations, so Gary Davies sound of the 80s followed by Fern Cotton's 90s show.

Zoe Ball does my head in a little in the morning's right enough so I get your point about the music and DJs. Isn't Radio 4 for people in their seventies?

Absolutely :)

I am not a fan of Fern Cotton she annoys me so never listen to her, I am like Batch, I cant be doing with loud and energetic presenters in the mornings, even Zoe ball is too much most of the time!

I am not bad on Popmaster I normally get late teens early 20s but have had 3x 39s over the last few years, Adje from the TEF I understand has been on Popmaster in the past and did quite well so I believe, I am sure he will fill us in!

not heart, never heart
I only listen to Heart 80s as most of the day they don't have any presenters which suits me when driving.

Sara Cox does the early evening slot on Radio 2 now. Oddly I've never really minded her for some reason, I have found her enthusiasm palatable for whatever reason. I was never a massive fan of Chris Evans either but he was clearly very good at his job given his popularity.

Me too, which shows do you like? For me it's Huey and Jamz Supernova. I quite like Radcliffe and Maconie as well, even though I hated Mark Radcliffe when he was on Radio 1. Iggy Pop's show seems pretty good but I don't generally listen to the radio at that time.

Still like a bit of Classic FM in the van, helps remind me to keep a better posture after a hard day. Absolute 90's is the only other one I really listen to, if there are other tradesman about and I want to keep the peace.

Evans is a knob, and arrogant self centred knob, yes I met him while he was filming a documentary at one of the festivals by band were playing at (Boomtown) and he didn't dispell my initial thoughts of him.

As stated above, Ball does my head in, shes too loud, talky and lovey.

Agree on both points. Evans is very good but does go on abit when he has guest in the studio. Sara Cox has done the morning shows over recent years but she's more plausible than the annoying Zoe ball.

Impressive thread bump.

Dunno about anyone else but I'm getting fed up of the seemingly untouchable Steve Wright on Radio2. £500k a year that bloke gets to sing over songs, cut them short and churn out his dated drivel. The half of the year he gets off offers much better replacements. Time he was moved on.
Used to like radio 2 when I was night trucking until they got rid of Janice Long and Alex Lester.  They also shat on Simon Mayo who did a good job I thought. I do like Sara Cox's show though to be fair to her.

I like greatest hits radio and enjoy Frank Skinner's show on Absolute radio Saturday mornings when driving to golf.

Sara Cox plays some really good stuff on her show, also Jo Wiley is less irritating than I used to find her on R1.

Never liked Steve Wright in the 80's when it was on the bus radio on the way home from school, and still dislike it now! Tedious stuff that is pretty much the same as what he was churning out nearly 40 years ago!

100% on all of that, Wright used to be good but about 10 years ago he got so far up his own arse a proctologist couldnt get him out.

Mayo was badly treated by Radio 2.

And +1 for Skinner also Jason Manford on a Sunday mornogn on Absolute is worth a listen.

Due to my motoring movements nationally and that I only have an FM/MW radio in the van I have to take what I can get so it’s a toss up between R2 & Greatest Hits Radio. Re. Steve Wright, way past his sell by date talks over the songs and is stuck in the 1980’s. So I skip him if I can, Jeremy Whine just makes me annoyed with the banal crap they discuss and pander to the lowest common denominator. The female presenters do nothing for me whatsoever, as I may have mentioned it’s like radio mumsnet, even on GHR I switch over to something else when the ladies are on, oddly I do like Lisa Tarbuck though. Radio 4 now and then if there is something interesting or I drive in silence.

I'm with you here.  And he's not the only one.  Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine.  Nothing against any of them in particular.  But it does grate that recruitment seems to have been frozen 20+ years ago.  These are prime time spots on a prime station.  How much talent over the years has been blocked, or gone elsewhere?  I know Radio 2 isn't meant to be cutting edge...but you run the risk of it becoming very outdated with so little turnover.

Different topic, but similar to Gary Lineker's tenure on Match of the Day.  23 years (& counting) is simply too long a stint.

Ah Gary Lineker. It's a bizarre, unusual one but I have a serious irrational dislike for that man, yet I follow him on twitter, even though almost every one of his tweets annoys me. I think it's probably that his almost childlike enthusiasm for everything football based really grinds my gears. I used to be like him in my twenties, watching every game I could, but that admiration for football has slowly diminished in my life as more important things come into focus and modern football is  of not much interest outside of STFC.

I should stop following him of course but for whatever reason, I just can't, and he continues to irritate with his dad joke tweets and his fawning praise over an Alexander-Arnold free kick or whatever. I stopped watching Match of the Day yonks ago so no idea if this is true, but on a podcast I listen to apparently whenever Lineker is on TV he always sits like he's hiding an erection. I've no idea how accurate this is mind you!

I love hip hop and dance music best (house, techno, drum and bass), but if I'm not listening to Spotify in the car it's:

Classical. But they have a less generic selection than Classic FM and play some operatic and glangly stuff that I don't like.

For some reason I can't remember the names or artists of any classical music, despite having clocked up hundreds of hours of listening. No idea who my favoruite artists or pieces or sub-genres are. It sounds great though.

6 music or Radio 2, with the odd bit of 5 live and R4 comedies.
Faves are:
6 music: Cerys Sunday mornings, Guy Garvey Sunday pm, Craig Charles Sat eve Funk  & Soul Show, RadMac.
R2 Sara Cox, genuinely funny (vs Zoe Ball who tries to be funny, but is just annoying), Jo Whiley, Ken Bruce (PQ avg about 15)

Of all those, Cerys on Sunday morning is my absolute favourite. For me her gentle, soothing Welsh tones; her genuine love for the eclectic mix of music that she plays and the interesting chats with the guests have come to sum up Sunday morning. I genuinely miss her when she's not on; Sundays just aren't the same. Give it a try!!

I don't think I've ever listened to radio 3. I don't even know what's on it.

Classical mainly, opera, some jazz, very occasional folk stuff, film music.

It is to classic fm what BBC 1 is to ITV.
