Post by: walrus on Saturday, February 26, 2005, 14:13:45
For those who are unable to make the 350 mile round trip from Swindon to Doncaster.  Today is an important game, with Bournemouth looking unlikely to get anything from Kenilworth Road today with Luton currently back to winning ways, and Doncaster hot on the heels of Swindon, just 2 points behind us.

With just Christian Roberts on the absentee list, and Andy Nicholas seemingly on King's personal black list, its likely to be an unchanged side.  Parkin's tied for 3rd with a number of players in the goalscoring charts with 18 league goals for the season, so today could be his chance to leap up into second place behind Hull's Steven Elliot.

League Table currently resembles:

4th Sheff Wed P34 58 +20
5th Hartlepool P32 58 +13
6th Bournemouth P33 53+15
7th Swindon Town P34 52 +8
8th Bristol City P34 51 +16
9th Doncaster P34 50 +3
10th Brentford P31 50 -4

It's all getting very tight, although Tranmere, Hull and Luton now look out of reach, with Sheff Wed and Hartlepool still being a good distance ahead.  Brentford are possible threats with 3 games in hand despite their current poor goal difference, and the superior goal difference of many of the teams around us must surely be a concern.  Today can see Doncaster eliminated from the playoff race and hopefully see us finally move into a playoff position since October.

The last meeting between the teams was during Swindon's dreadful run before Christmas, with a boring 1-1 draw, with that man Sam Parkin scoring for Swindon.  It was prior to the embarrassing Notts County defeat live on Sky Sports, so not a happy time for the fans.

With both teams having a relatively injury free squad to chose from, should be an interesting match and a good test of what we're really made of.

we should aim for catching sheff wed. 6th place is a bit too tight for my liking

Swindon Town: Rhys Evans, Steve Jenkins, Sean O'Hanlon, Matt Heywood, David Duke, Sammy Igoe, Grant Smith, Matt Hewlett, Lee Holmes, Sam Parkin, Michael Proctor

Substitutes: Steve Book, Brian Howard, Jamie Slabber, Jerel Ifil, Stefani Miglioranzi

Team News - Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster Rovers

Rovers: Andy Warrington, Dave Mulligan, Nick Fenton, Steve Foster, Tim Ryan; James Coppinger, Paul Green, John Doolan, Michael McIndoe; Gregg Blundell, Neil Roberts.

Substitutes: Ross Flitney (GK), Adriano Rigoglioso, Jermaine McSporran, Nic Priet, Ricky Ravenhill.

I think a 6 point deficit is a big target at this stage of the season, but Sheff Wed were poor on Tuesday against Posh, and have a tricky match at Griffin Park, which goes massively in our favour as any result will benefit ourselves.

Should have brought in Migs for Hewlett imo. We've needed creativity recently and we all know Migs can bring that to the team.

Lee Holmes!

Great play by Igoe, picking out Parkin, who cut the ball back.  Keeper got a palm to it, but ball broke to Lee Holmes who duly obliged.

What a great start to a crucial match.  We must must must keep our concentration and hang on in there!

Whilst Ed Hadwin and his co-commentator(?) discuss hair colour, sounds like we're playing very well, pegging Doncaster back in their own half.  A second would be fantastic, we must guard against complacency.

Long to hold on to a one goal lead. Hope they don't try to sit on it for 85 minutes.

In goalscoring terms which you are implying, Holmes who has just scored his first goal from an open goal situation, compared with Howard who has scored several quality finishes, Howard.

In terms of wing play, for me it's marginal.  But we own Howard.  We don't own Holmes!  But while we're winning, I couldn't give a stuff!   :D

Stockport, Hull, Tranmere winning.  Stockport winning significant as it's over Hartlepool, who have 3 games in hand on us and 6 points advantage, but if they start to slip they could get dragged into a proper playoff battle!

Apopletic:

# Of, resembling, or produced by apoplexy: an apoplectic fit.
#

   1. Having or inclined to have apoplexy.
   2. Exhibiting symptoms associated with apoplexy.

# Extremely angry; furious: “members of Congress who otherwise become apoplectic about wasteful government spending” (Dan Morgan).

Ed Hadwin's favourite word.  Lucky escape for Swindon, another Duke clearance charged down and Evans made a fantastic save.

Port Vale beat luton 3-1, Barnsley won 4-1 and Stockport beat Hartlepool 1-0. Makes some of our recent wins look impressive.
