Title: Favourite tipple?
Post by: Amir on Sunday, April 16, 2006, 00:14:05
I'm very much a cider man myself at the moment.  There's a lovely organic cider in most supermarkets now, magner's is good for the summer, and sheppey's do some that will knock you for six :D

A pint of guinness does the trick now and again, and I sometimes drink red wine although my only criteria is that it's over a fiver.

Magners is great just makes me feel so ill the next day.

Have to say it's a bottle of poncey Corona for me at the moment washed down with a decent Vodka and maybe a good double J&T with a twist of lime.

not drinking much lately but if i have its been lager, kronie or fosters. more likely a guinness though.

magners is lovely but it's £3.50 a pint in the only pub near me which serves it. fuck that.

Really?  I quite like it because it doesn't really do much damage, especially because of the ice.  My fear is that I'm going to start wanting to punch people that order it.

Punch people that order it, why is that?   :D

I'm normally blessed with a fairly mild hangover but not sure if it's the mixing drinks (which it probably is) but a couple of botttles and I feel like sandpaper in the desert the next morning.

I don't know, you can just see things are going to become so fashionable that some knob is holding you up getting a drink because he's buying two magner's with his credit card and telling everybody in earshot how much he loves it.  I wouldn't really punch anyone because of it, the sentiment just expresses the disdain I feel for them.  Innitt.

Credit cards in pubs should be banned.

I spent a night on the Guiness last night before we hit the clubs then it turned to the traditional bottled lager and shots.

I'd say Guiness is my tipple of choice now but it does vary.

Stella or Strongbow, although I've been having red wine a fair bit until recently, which is quite surprising as I didn't like it very much a year ago.

I've just given up caffine because most tea is pretty rank if you drink too much.  Earl Grey or English Breakfast are okay as long as it's twinnings.  At the moment I'm drinking Cranberry, Raspberry, and Elderflower.

I'm a red wine drinker these days. The majority of which is made up with Campo Viejo Tempranillo, when it's on offer. Aldi do some great ones as well. Morrisons used to do a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo that was the shit, and we practically lived off, but alas, that's no longer sold.

If in a pub, Guinness. At home, usually red wine, occasionally lager and whisky.

I failed miserably doing Dry January, so doing Dry February. A week in so far and feel better for it. I'm not staying up late drinking and eating crap. I might even carry on and make my next drink a pint in a pub when they open.

I was 40!

My alcohol choices have stayed the same though.

Strong Belgian beers by preference between 9% and 16% alcohol, I cannot drink enough to get drunk any more so I drink them because I like the taste of them not for their alcohol content.

When I go out I would rather abstain totally than drink generic beers/lagers/ciders on tap, utter grabage that they are.

The landlord at one of my old locals, the red lion in Barnes, used to be a multiple winner of Fullers' cellerman awards and his London Pride was incredible. Beautiful pint when it's kept well.

Some of the locals used to call that pub "studio 3", given it was over the road from the famous Olympic Studios, home to the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin and Hendrix, among  others.

Fuck me I miss being able to go to the pub for a pint whenever I fancied it.

Used to be in the pub trade and Pride was the kind of thing you had on sale whenever you could get your hands on it. Flew out of the pumps like a big popular thing, so it never approached its sell by date. Timmy Taylor’s Landlord (another personal favourite) was a different story. Beautiful drop but more expensive so could hang around in the cellar a bit longer.

Appreciate a good cellarman. Looking after the beer was one of the few things I actually enjoyed about my job before I left the trade.

Two bouts of food poisoning in India and Laos mean I can't drink the way I could 15 years ago, so it's red wine or light beers mainly. I still drink cider, ale, brandy, and whisky on occasion because I'm a twat, and if I'm feeling particularly intelligent I mix them.

I'm not a big fan of wine, but I have recently discovered that I love dessert wine.

Wrong'un

I tell myself stories like that, ginge  ;D

I do love a pint of Guinness but in general only drink it when over in Ireland as I think it just tastes so much nicer and creamier over there. (I guess its the time taken over the pour) My MIL also makes the best Irish coffees, I think this is because she has never drank and so has no idea how potent whisky is so I get a proper measure!!

With food, generally a nice bottle of wine, as Bazza mentioned, Aldi do a decent range and do a case of 6 reds for £33 with free delivery so usually top that up with a pick and mix depending on what we fancy. I recently bought some cans of Tangle Foot beer which I enjoyed and some bottles of Wursteiner Pils (also from Aldi) which are lovely and refreshing during Monday's zoom poker evenings.

When lockdown is over looking forward to seeing what the Northants brewers have to offer around here.

In the last year (lockdown) I could probably count on one hand how many drinks i've had. Never been a "casual drinker" in the sense of a glass or two with dinner, or a couple of pints infront of the TV, just never understood it. Not being able to see my mates, or go to pubs, I've just not had the urge to drink.
The exception was Christmas and New Year really

That being said, I'm very much a Spiced Rum and Coke/Ginger Beer fan.

Have you done the Guinness brewery tour? Its fantastic, more like a museum than a typical tour. The Guinness you get given there is obviously really, really good but if anything its a bit too fresh. A Guinness in any of the pubs near St James's Gate, however, is perfection.

I have, but probably around 20 years ago and I didn't like Guinness at the time and gave my free pint away! (sacre bleu!). Dublin does do its Guinness very well but my favourite place for it was actually in Galway, i'm probably showing bias as that's where we got married.

The guinness in Cork wasn't good at all, but that is because Cork has other drinks and so my cynical head reckons they do their Guinness badly so as to show off their other wares!

Ale - Jennings Cumberland or Thwaites Wainwright.
Larger - Belgian or if in a pub, Moretti, Estrella Damn or if things are scarce Stella (nothing beats a cold Stella to cure a hangover),
Red Wine - preferably Rioja or Shiraz, none of that Merlot nonsense!
Don't really do spirits, but if needs be I like a nice G&T.
