If I play devil's advocate here I would say non-smokers should stand outside and drink in a smoke-free environment. What's the difference?
On a personal view I am finding myself agreeing with it evermore.

That's the ban

I was so saying what if the roles were reversed? What would happen then? Would it be passed (the ban on non-smoking)?

It's philosophy young Johnson  8)

 :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Pure genius Yeovil my son !!!

I'll happily invest in that one.

I'm a smoker and I think it's disgraceful that yet again the government is sticking it's nose into my business.

I understand the health implications for non-smokers, especially bar workers, however I don't agree with an outright ban.

Modern air filtration systems can remove particles of just about anything the air and are capable of making the air in a pub equivalent to that of the standard found in an operating theatre.

In addittion, the landlord of my local is a smoker, as are most of the staff and punters, and I wonder whether he will enforce this ban his own (privatley owned) free house.

As a smoker, I don't like people smoking around me when I'm eating, I think it's rude and inconsiderate and spoils meals so I agree with a ban in restaraunts.

Pubs however, are a completely different kettle of fish.  We should have non-smoking pubs and pubs where smoking is allowed.  Everyone then has choice.  If they want a smoke with a pint they can have one, if not, they can go to a different pub.

Simple and logical really but when has this government ever used logic in it's law making?

Id have been happy with non smoking areas instead

I am actually not fussed by this, it will either encourage me not to smoke when I am drinking, or I will go outside.  I go to Ireland a bit and everyone hated it to start with but now it works really well.  Sometimes even I am affected by the amount of smoke in pubs etc, and I smoke  :|

I bloody loves it.

I'm a weekend smoker only nowadays and love a tab with a drink but having experienced smoke free pubs in Dublin its great news.

Even as a smoker the experience of walking into a smoke free pub for the first time is something else.  There's no rank lingering atmosphere and overall the whole place just seems brighter.

You do smoke a hell of a lot less without feeling the difference.  I can regularly do in 30 schmokes on a night out yet on a Dublin session it’s down to 10/11.  A lot to do with not having so many sticky fingers about but it does help a hell of a lot.  Plus then you don’t have all the smoke amplifiers in your hangover.

Not only that but there’s a cracking atmosphere in the outside bits, it’s a good laugh and prime meat pulling territory.

Pubs are going to have to sort outside bits sharpish though.  High Street pubs are going to have to organise smoker’s areas or risk losing trade or having councils grumbling about the 30 pissed up loonies blocking the High Street on a Saturday afternoon.

You know what this means…..

The long and much anticipated return of……….

The Beer Garden \o/

I read an interesting article about the smoking ban in Ireland the other day.  Apparently instead of pubs smelling of smoke nowadays, they stink of body odour.  The smell in some pubs is unbearable.

So Johno next summer, remember to douse yourself in some Lynx before you start you're ten hour drinkning binge, because the builders (and other workers) who come into the bar straight after work for their drinking session probably won't remember!

Personally I think it's a bad move by the nanny state.  Pubs are for men and women to go and unwind as they always have been.  I don't smoke but I don't begrudge anyone from choosing to smoke.

smoking is a filthy habit that is a fucker to quit(i quit  nov 04) i find the cravings worse when people are smoking around me,so this new law is superb.
if people want to stink, and kill themselves slowly thats their choice but it shouldn't be inflicted on others.

If the government were doing it for the public they would just ban tobacco outright.

And I'm all for the smoking ban, as it doesn't help my asthma.

Dazza is bang on. From what I've heard, going outside for a ciggie in ireland has become a really good way of meeting people. Hopefully the same will happen here. Of course night clubs with no outside bits would be a nightmare. Constantly telling a bouncer that I was just popping out for a cigarette and will he let me back in would be unworkable.

If there were 2 clubs and in one you were allowed to smoke and in the other you weren't which one would you go to?

However, if all of your mates were going to the smoking club which one would you go to?

It's interesting to see that most people I've asked these questions to answer the non-smoking club for question 1 and then the smoking club for question 2. It obviously doesn't bother people as much as they make out.

The pub I drink in after football on saturday is fucking disgusting. There is no air conditioning and a haze of foul cigarette smoke lingers about and makes you and your clothes stink of horrible second hand smoke.

I can't wait for the day I can go to the boozer and be able to wear a pair of jeans/t shirt 2 days in a row and not stink like a nicotine factory.

I'm sure many Scots would love to govern their own country.  After all as half of our oil reserve is still left, we wouldn't have to subsidise England like we do now.  Instead Scotland could reap the benefit of her own oil.

Then instead of you boys helping the Romans, I'm sure the Scots would have no shortage of volunteers to rebuild the wall!!
