I'm thinking Eric Sabin and Bobby Howe deserve that status.

Bobby Howe only deserves that status if the title of this topic has been strategically mis-spelt. :D

Will always remember Sabin tho for the Trust player of the Year awards (OK, not quite the Brits, but we had fun) in his 1st season. Remember then he was mainly famous for hurtling towards startled defenders at speed before falling over in the box to increasingly less sympathetic refs. So, the do is in the Winners, Eric is accepting an award for something or other on behalf of someone else, he comes up to the front, trips on the biut where there was a carpeted section raised by about a millimetre from the woodeny-type floor, and goes sprawling. Cue shouts of "Dive" and spontaneous applause from the assembled fans. Pure class, goes to show he couldn't help himself - must have been some kind of medical condition that whenever he saw a rectangle marked out on the floor, his body just kind of hurled him to the floor. Kind of Falling Over Tourettes.

Nah it was ace  8)

I reckon bobby howe got a bad deal. he ended up being played as some sort of a midfield general when he wasn't that sort of player at all. When he was aloud to get forward he'd occasionally do something good. Go bobby Howe

A few seasons ago we played Colchester away. It was a midweek game and we ended up winning 3-1.  We were 1-0 down at half time and at some point after the break, Eric got the ball and started lolloping towards the Col U goal. I yelled at the top of my voice, "Just get in the box and fall over Eric!" And he did just that! The ref gave a pen 'and the rest as they say is history'. To this day I am claiming an assist on that goal.

You probably had to be there but me and the people around me thought it was as funny as fuck 8)

From the adver, the day after he signed for Swindon:

Quote
He joins some illustrious compatriots in this country, including Sylvain Wiltord, Olivier Dacourt and Thierry Henry.

He said: “A lot of French people are succeeding in England and I hope to follow this example.”

He has been likened to Henry but said: “We are both from the French West Indies, but I am going to stop the comparison there.”

The first game I saw him play was at The Manor when I was at Uni. I seem to remember him scoring 2 goals. Oxford had 2 men sent off, and the game got stopped for a while when the London road were getting a bit upset about it all. Oxford then got relegated that season too...

I think that alone gets him a cult status.

There was definitely a comical incident whereby the referee showed one of their players a second yellow card, without realising that he had already booked him. The Swindon end then took it upon themselves to point out this oversight to him, whereupon the referee realising his mistake promptly produced the red. Classic.

I think that may have been the incident that provoked the bottle throwing.

El duque, I stand corrected just trawled the advers archives and whitehead and murphy were both sent off.  God I forgot how good that match was, best memories apart from the goals are the queues to get in and missing the kick-off after the police 'forgot' to turn up to escort the busses in.

Parkin can't be a "cult" hero though, can he?  He's more your traditional hero.

Darren Bullock might have had that status.

Bobby Howe, absolutely, crap but loved.

Charlie Henry was one a while back I guess.

Reeves I suppose might also challenge for cult status as opposed to being a normal hero.  Most of his supoort seemed to build up once he'd had his worst spell as a player.  If he was still playing a hurried punt into orbit and over the stand would be greeted with smiles and loud voices shouting Reeeeeves.  Ifil doing the exact same thing would get half the crowd muttering about his uselessness at distribution.

I'm surprised that in a thread about cult heroes. no one has mentioned Dave Bamber - the ultimate cult hero surely?

He didn't look remotely like a footballer and I remember the first time I ever heard the 'Where's your caravan?' song. It was in 1987 at Elland Road and was directed, understandably, at Big Dave.

What a player though. Unorthodox? You bet, but a genuine match winner.

He not especially good but looks like he sleeps on a park bench, when most footballers spend half their day gettin g their hair done.

A cult hero would be a non mainstream hero.  Someone that has no logical reason for being popular.

Parkin scored 20+ goals for 3 seasons running = normal hero

The Bobby Howe example - couldn't pass, run, shoot, head etc but somehow remained relatively well liked, even if on a piss take level only.  Drysdale had much the same ability level but was generally hated.

Paul Allen, in the Shadow of the south stand at the bank end Allen would jauntily take on his man, beat him three times then slip over.  Was he always wearing the wrong boots? Or did the shadow make 'Paul Allen corner' unusually slippery?

My favourite story about the big Kiwi was from last season.  He was suspended, yet came out on the lap of honour at the last game.  He proceeded to throw his STFC jacket into the crowd (he missed first time).  The dopey fool had forgotten that it contained his cheque book and a payslip.  The young lad who caught the jacket had to spend an hour waiting around to give it back after the game... by all accounts, he's a bit simple.

If Shakes makes the WC along with his name and if he stays next season then he could find himself a cult figure to Swindon fans.

Those who think Martin O'Neill might be good as an England manager should remember that it was teh signing of Scott, his Wycombe protege to Norwich which more or less cost him his job there.
