Title: Fallon Replacement?
Post by: DerbyRed on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 15:47:23
Now that Fallon has gone to Swansea, does anyone reckon we'll sign a replacement for him?  I'm guessing the board will use the £300k to pay off debts, but at least Iffy should have Fallon's wages to play with in order to bring in a new striker.

I reckon he'll try to bring someone in going by the comment at the bottom of this link:

http://www.thisisstfc.co.uk/News_Headlines_Story.asp?NewsID=5204

'It is now just six days until the January transfer window slams shut and the Town boss has reiterated his desire to see no further activity involving his club during that time.
He said: "Hopefully we keep the full complement. I'm happy with squad and I'm not looking to bring anyone in. The only reason I would bring people in now is if we lost anyone else for any reason."

I think since there's a chance we're going down the board won't gove any money to Iffy. The only money we'll have is to spend on wages and that will be because of Fallon not on the wage budget anymoe. Can we get more short-term loans in? I wouldn't mind betting that's what will happen.

NO...the height of our strikers do not dictate how we play. Its the passing ability of our players that dicate how we play.

We started the season with Cureton and Thorpe up front and we still hoofed it.

Selling Fallon wont change the way we play at all

I wouldn't mind betting we get a loan or short term contract player in (Sheff Utd must have a few availbale now that they have signed another forward).  In the long term you have Roberts on the wage bill and Holgate coming through.

not unless iffy does something about it! Im sure that Falllons height DID play a factor in our tactics, he was a tall target man who we were gonna try and hit! Peacock is the player who i hope will bring something different out of the team!

i'd much rather have seen cureton and peacock up front anyway, so this is quite good in a way.

we'll miss fallon's goals a little but i can honestly see peacock banging them in for us and cureton's got a proven record in league one this season, the goal at the weekend will have given him the confidence to continue in the same vein of form. hopefully.

football is all about if's and but's though.

Fallon has been a lazy bastard recently and while I'm happy with the goals he has delivered I reckon Peacock, Cureton and and detoxed Taffy will provide enough to compensate. £300K fecking welsh twats, he's a donkey!  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Exactly DV.  There is every chance that Rory could well have just stopped scoring goals, just as easily as he could have continued scoring them.  We've seen how bad he can be, and you just never know if he qould have reverted back to that once a bit of form or confidence was lost.  The first 75 mins or so on Saturday was the old Rory Fallon for me.  Lots of bad control, running around into other players spaces or just standing still.  The risk was always there that he might just have stopped at 14 for the season.

rory scoring 14 this season is unbelieveable. he will move to swansea, not play and probably wont do anything as swansea probably don't hoof it to there strikers.

From a Barnsley fan on BBC 606:

A 'significant' sell on clause was insisted upon by Barnsley FC before selling Fallon to Swindon.

From Official Site

BARNSLEY Football Club are set to receive an unexpected financial windfall this week if reports from South Wales are to be believed and striker Rory Fallon completes his switch from Swindon Town to League One big spenders Swansea City.

Swindon had initially rejected a six-figure bid from the Swans earlier this month but the Welsh side have reportedly followed up their interest with a second offer, rumoured to be in the region of £300,000.

Fallon came up through the Academy system at Oakwell, making his first team debut in 2001. He went on to turn out 58 times for the Reds, netting eleven goals, before joining Swindon Town in November 2003.

The New Zealander has been a massive hit at Swindon and has bagged 14 goals in a struggling Robins side this season. He had been targeted by Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

The deal taking the 23-year-old to the County Ground in November 2003 included a significant sell-on clause which is set to net Barnsley Football Club a financial boost should the deal be completed before the transfer window closes.

Today's Swansea Evening Post reads:

Swansea City were today closing in on the signing of Swindon striker Rory Fallon amid fresh speculation linking Lee Trundle with a move to the Premiership.

As Kenny Jackett aimed to tie up a deal for Fallon, the Swansea boss was fearing a possible bid for his star centre-forward after Portsmouth watched him in action at the Liberty Stadium last night. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp had been expected in South Wales, but in the end it was assistant manager Kevin Bond and first-team coach Joe Jordan running the rule over Swansea's top marksman.

Redknapp, depserate for new recruits as he bids to keep Portsmouth in the Premiership, has confessed his admiration for Trundle in the past - and said after the 5-0 drubbing at Birmingham last Saturday that he was on the hunt for a centre-forward.

Jackett has been searching for a new frontman, too, and it seems he may now get a player he admitted bidding £300,000 for last week.

The Evening Post understands Fallon was at the Liberty for talks yesterday.

The 23-year-old Kiwi, who Swansea have watched on numerous occasions, indicated last week that he was keen to see out his contract before moving on a free this summer, while Swindon insisted they were intent on retaining their top marksman.

But the signing of Sheffield Wednesday frontman Lee Peacock appears to have paved the way for Fallon to move on.

The former Barnsley player, who at 6ft 2in boasts the physical presence Jackett craves, said over the weekend that he would leave if Swindon wanted him to go.

Trundle, meanwhile, is still to sign the contract extension chairman Huw Jenkins claimed was finalised last Saturday.

Starting for the first time in three weeks after injury last night, the 17-goal Scouser did not make a huge impact.

Bond and Jordan left after 80 minutes of the LDV Vans Trophy southern section semi-final against Walsall, while Trundle was substituted at the start of extra-time.

Swansea won it 6-5 on penalties, the match having finished 2-2 after extra time.

I think Ugarte isn't a bad shout, and maybe a phone call to Sheff Utd to see how much they'd want for Beckett as he doesn't seem happy on loan at Oldham??

Great deal for us, I'm bloody delighted. I'd have been spitting feathers if we'd not got The Cock through the door beforehand but I've got good vibes about Curo and Cock. Goals in that there partnership, especially if the wide lads carry on where they left off on Saturday.

As for a replacement... that's a tough one, especially when you sonsider that Robbo will come back at some stage, Holgate is also in Iffy's thoughts and then, of course there is always boy Wonder Andy Caton.
For my money, the latter two will really begin baring fruit next year. Given we'll lose a big slice of the Fallon cash to Barnsley, I wouldn't be too surprised if we brought in a lad on loan or temporary untill the season's end.

So, who am I going for then... hmmmm...

How about Bruce Dyer from Stoke - recently at Millwall on loan. Once the costliest teenager in Britain now struggling to get a game Stoke. Smacks of 'Deon Burton Syndrome' but would be an option.

Quote
While Onuora will certainly not be getting his hands on the whole lot, deputy chairman Mark Devlin says the manager can expect some assistance to seek a replacement.

He said: “Obviously there isn’t too much time but Iffy now has the opportunity to try and identify someone he feels will strengthen the squad again.”

I'd quite fancy a look at Rochdale's Richard Lambert.  Bit of height, pace and skill and doing rather well this season last time I looked.

Won't be earning a great deal up there and could be tempted....
