I know we won the inaugral tournament way back in 1971 (Was the cup started just because Swindon couldn't enter 'proper' european competitions becuase we were Div 3?).

Does anyone have any memories of the re-incarnation of the tournament in the early 90's?

Looking at the history we played in it twice in 1992/93 which was a three team group, we played Brentford and The Pox and come second in the group so did not qualify get to play the Italians.

Then in 94/95 we played 4 Italian teams, were these games home and away? Did anyone travel? Was it generally pap and a waste of time?

Although I had a season ticket I do not remember this competition at all.

Your thoughts please.

vaguely remember us playing Lecce, Atalanta and Venezia. The Venezia away game I remember listening to on the radio, and If my memory serves me correctly, then towards the end Hammond came on as sub in goal and digby went up front. Not totally sure as it could just be my overactive imagination.

I went to the Atalanta game. Not bad as far as I remember. As expected, the Italians had their quota of 3 long haired scruffs...

I seem to remember that the attendance for the Venezia away game was absolutely piss poor. Maybe even lower than 1000. Presumably this was why the competition got withdrawn.

Whilst on the subject of Italy, I also seem to remember that during the 92/3 season, Hoddle was player manager of a 1st Division select team which played (and beat) a Serie B select.

  Sounds about right to me..... for the Venezia game the only way to get to their ground was by boat, which I suppose being in Venice wasn't too strange.

 We played the Scum at their dung heap and put out a weakened side, which duly thrashed their sorry arse first team 3-1.

 Lecce  had also been relegate dthe previous season from Serie A shipping a load of goals, so it promised a good game betwen the two sides we won 3-1.

 I seem to recal Ascoli being in there somewhere and Oliver Bierhoff netting for them.

 Bugger me....I'd completely forgoten that one....Hoddle was the manager of a FL select....was it played at Trashton Gate?    Seem to recall he picked Craig Maskell up front rather than Andy Cole.

 That game would be worth a bit of research, when having time.

 I think we had a few in that side, but don't recall the details...drugs and booze are bound to catch up with you in the end.

But on the subject of the Anglo-Italian comp,i always thought it was a shame they stopped doing it.Lack of interest in Italy i guess.

 I kinda liked it as well, but the crowds here were poor as well for the second attempt.

 Having nits is crap, I'm sitting here now  itching evrywhere just thinking about it.

I went to that game. Seem to remember one of our goals came from a free kick that was conceded when a pox player took a short free kick, and his pleb team mate bent down and picked the ball up and replaced it not realising the kick had already been taken...was quality. I also think buzzer scored from about 40 yards out?

I think we also played the pox in 94/95 anglo-italian and lost on pens, beauchamp was playing for us and got loads of abuse from the pox scum.

 You go tthe wires crossed here I reckon.....we drew 3-3 with the Scum in about 91/92 season....and beat them on pens.....bit before Bumchum.

It's all a bit hazy reg. I was a stoner in the 90's and it's all a bit of a blur to be frank, or perhaps I shall talk to frank?

 I know the feeling....I've got whole decades which are a blur.

Wish I had seen the games against Juventus/Napoli and Roma etc, but was too young.

Saw the Brentford home group game in 92, they snatched the winner in the last minute.

I think Calderwood was also in the select team Hoddle managed, got the details somewhere but can't be bothered to search for it.

Oh, and Kerslake in 89-90, pure class.

I was at that game. There was only about 2,000 people there! Their winning goal was indeed in the last minute, a shot which hit the underside of the bar and bounced in!

The Anglo Italian cup was great , I went to all the home games, and against
shitty oxford.

All I can remember about the Brentford game, was that is was cold, and
fucking boring.
Notts county seemed to be the only club that gave a shit about it

i went to the home games against atalanta & lecce in 94/95 & remember it being crap & like a reserve game. waste of time. i think it was hammond who played up front against venezia.

i remember that inter-league match aswell, i'm sure i read somewhere that they're planning another one again soon & peter taylor is in charge? unless i dreamt it? i'll have a look.

but for the game in 92 i think we had calderwood, maskell, kerslake & hammond in the squad. jason drysdale was in there too!

Was drydale in there from Newcastle, because we didn't sign him until March '95 to appease fans as a result of selling Jan Aage.

i think he was still playing for watford then & was highly regarded as a 'star of the future'  :mrgreen:

newcastle paid quite a bit of money for him, realised he was shit & sold him to us
