What was the best match you EVER saw at the County Ground??

Its a hard question in truth ...

Quality wise I remember the Hoddle inspired play off semi win against tranmere 3-1 with fondness.

For satisfaction the last minute win over vale in the last relegation season with a 95th minute winner from graz meant loads cos we hadn't won for so long. Or the QPR win in the premiership for the same reasons.

When we did Huddersfield 6-0 in a midweek game was sweet, so was the peterborough game when danny scored that goal.

I'm probably not old enough to remember the very best quality matches of yesteryear that people like reg wax lyrical about

that 3-1 v Tranmere indeed rates very highly .. especially as I rushed to make the kick off from Didcot when my junior under 11 team which i was managing won the Vale League Boys Cup 5-0 against Didcot .. i remember winning it .. grabbin the trophy and literally running out of the ground!

Anyone got any idea how I could watch Danny's goal against Peterborough? I've got my memories from the game but would love to see the goal again!

3-1 Tranmere was superb. 2-1 against Tottenham was a great game too.

seemed so close it was scary.

The town end was on form that day.

I remember when we beat Leicester 5-2, think it was the season before we won promotion to the prem and think it kept us up - that was a good game.

Also when we battered Stoke 6-0 when Ossie was in charge. The stoke fans were on the bank getting soaked - conga-ing in and out of the bogs and celebrating our goals cos they wanted their manager sacked!

3-1 against Watford in 1991 was a classic.

The leicester 5-2 was my fourth game ever, and the first win I ever saw, it was 1990-91 season, I think Steve Foley scored a hat trick?

does the 6-0 count though? If I remember rightly Huddersfield had half their squad out with flu, but the FA wouldn't let them call the game off. So we spanked their youth team.

Walters did score a screamer though

COuld be right about the hudds game, remeber thorne scored 3, and pretty much all my mates from school were there which was rare, it was buzzing there the next day.

I enjoyed it when we lost to Middlesborough (2-1?) when they had Ravanelli, Emerson etc playing after their relegation from the Premiership. We were top at the time (as we'd played loads more games than anyone else, and noone good!) so there was loads of "We are top of the league" chanting etc.

Either the 6-0 win against Hudds, or the 3-2 comeback win over Sheff Weds

There have been many in fairness.  Here are a few to throw into the mixer:

Sunderland (League) 1991 5-3 (first meeting after the 1990 playoff final)

These are the two that i thought of straight away seeing as i've only been a supporter for ten years.The Huddersfield game was weird,didn't we score all the goals really close together?
I'm useless with remembering games though,its quite scary to think about all the games i must have seen over the years :)

The Sheffield Wednesday was an amazing game as well,how could i have forgotten it :oops:

For emotion reasons, Peterborough at Home when Danny Invincible screamed that ball into the net in the last few minutes to make sure we stayed up. Ive never celebrated a goal like that in my life.

As i've said before,i was crying at the end of that game,and i ain't ashamed to admit it :)

remember it well,before the final whistle nearly everyone had climbed the fences and surrounded the pitch.with the game still in play.when that whistle went it was fucking bedlam

I remeber that goal so well, seem to think Mildy (not sure?) and Reeves conspired to make it 1-1 with a 20 yard own goal and I was convinced we were doomed.  

I like the games that mightn't be the best quality but the result means a lot, even in desperately poor relegation bound teams (we've had a few) the odd win after months of destitiution means so much more than winning week in weeek out IMHO.

Wasn't this George Ndah's debut? I seem to remember him scoring a great goal and also Merson scoring after our keeper kicked it straight to him? Of course I may be thinking of a different Swindon v Middlesbrough game?

My most memorable has to be the Game against Leicester at wembley for obvious reason but as others have said the Peterborough game was special too.

Sheffield Wednseday 3-2 was good, and the fact that we carried on chanting as we conceded to Hull last year was quality too.

i think i can just about remember that game. i was only about 8 or 9 but remember running on the pitch & my uncle put me on top of those lovely old concrete dugouts. well good! wasn't aloud to go to the final though coz i was too small  :cry:

some of the best games from my memory were during our coca-cola cup run in 94/95. the semi-final against bolton was good but the night game against millwall really sticks out. 3-0 & fjortofts super goal from the corner of the box  :D

Great days, no 2-1, goals from Shearer and white, we won the away leg 2-1 as well, goals from white and foley

Yeah I was on the roof of the dugout, and stood by the corner flag when a blackburn player was trying to  take a corner, it was ace.

George Ndah did make his debut against boro, when merse lobbed digby following a poor clearance, he'd been signed to replace alison but never gelled with the on fire chris hay, and after being top but with a poor crowd (sub 10K, what we'd give for that now), this defeat sent us into free fall and we ended up well down in the bottom half.  It may have been this season that boro did us 5 or 6 nil at their palce in a midweek game later in the season, hay never really found his form and ndah as we all know never truly peaked even alongside iffy.

Also Chester 1986 4-2 when we clinched promotion from the old Div 4, over 12000 inside the ground that night.

Moast memorable for me was the League Cup victory over Liverpool in 71.2 Rogers specials to nil.Next day Shankly said we were the worst team Liverpool had played-priceless!Close was the 5 goal thrashing of Best and Moore's Fulham in an FACup replay in 77.

Pox 2 Town 4.

It was 1990 I think, at the Manor. They were 2 up in about 5 minutes. We came back and fucked all over them! Class.

I'm going for a 6-2 win at Northampton....in 1968/69.....it was probably the most complete perfromance by that side that season....nominally we played with 5 players who were more attacking, namely Don Heath and Don Rogers out wide.....Peter Noble up front with John Smith playmaking and Smarty doing the running between attack and defence......all 5 scored a goal with Rogers bagging a brace.

 Cobblers were a decent home side onluy losing the 3 that season, and they were mullered.

for me, when i have actually been there would have to be against peterborough probably. there are many others i could choose.

due to the importance of it. i thought the goal would be on my stfc world but it isn't i don't think. couldn't find it  :(

I remember spending the last 5 mins of that game watching on the touchline, literally, like you do on Sunday League games!

It was indeed, i can remember the line for the Stratton Bank tickets went half way down the CG extension pitch.
We got near the front and was told that tickets were sold out, then all the Swindon fans put scarves,shirts etc firmly hidden under their jackets and we all went in the Away fans part of the bank. When we got the first equaliser all the Swindon lot were going mental and a fight then broke out and we ended up being put into the Shrivenham Road.

The game was 3-3.  :D

The FA Cup win 3-1 against West Ham, with their World Cup Stars, 1967. Rogers mesmerised their defence, think I felt a bit sorry for Bobby Moore.  :o

Don Rogers 2:0 Liverpool, 1970/71 League Cup.

Thst season Liverpool conceeded 18 goals in 42 league games, a record.

There were only two players that the great Leeds United team man-marked, one was George Best, the other was Don Rogers.

Rogers always looked like he was moving at walking pace, the players chasing after him looked like they were about to drop dead from over exertion.

the blackburn 4-3 i think when the fog was so bad you could not even see foley getting the winner! was that not the bizarre shearer goal in that game where the defender tried to clear the ball on the shrivenham side touchline about 35 yards out , it hit shearer on the knee flew at the goal and lobbed the keeper? sounds amazing but i have it on video somewhere!

That chester 4-2 was my first game. the only other time I have sat in the arkells/north stand was this season against yeovil. we won 4-2

i seen some good games at the old CG but for me it just has to be peterborough 00/01 season! the best end to a game ive ever experienced with danny's wonder goal at the end! what a day!

Yes the Blackburn game was the one with Shearer's goal in. I have the 89-90 goals video with that one, I'm sure if they tried that 100 times it would never go in again. And the fog as you say, what a change from the first half when it was clear.

The Tranmere game, the defender was Steve Vickers. He had a shocker that day, as you say he helped us with all 3 goals. I'm pretty sure he lost the ball to us when we made it 2-2 at their place as well so he could have been at fault for 4 goals in total.

......up 'til the point that fecker Sutton blatently shoved "the killer" over then picked up the ball and ran on to score. Bastard.
