The Manager stated that he is in talks with several potential targets, with former Walsall and Gillingham midfielder Paul Smith a name mentioned in conversation.

"Paul Smith is someone who I have spoken to, a few weeks ago in fact when he first made it known that things weren't going to work out at Gillingham. I may be speaking to him again but I am battling on a few fronts so to speak"

He's not good enough for Wallsall or the Gills, so what makes Iffy think he'll be a good signing  for us?

if we're signing gurney we don't really need smith do we? both a similar kind of player?

Different .. Smith is a captain and a battling midfielder .. Gurney is really a right back cum centre back and occasional midfielder .. both in the side would give us the experience and leadership to stay up

According to a lot of Gills fans on other sites he's a little on the large side nowadays, who's a couple of years past his best.  Great another unfit midfield general!

Hmmm by all account he sounded good at the start of the season when we were actually interested, if youd given me a choice then id have said Smith over Gurney

However Gurney has played well since he came back, where as Smith has been turned away by two other league one clubs

Just received a text saying that Mr Smith has been training with us today, so it could be on the cards.

Is it. The Walsall and Gills fans comments I have read say he is an overwieght has been.

I'd be happy to see them proved wrong and I trust Iffy to get the decision right.

Realistically anyone that shows an ounce of aggression in midfield is going to look like a Viera in his prime after the past few years.

I think he'll turn out to be a decent signing.  Plenty of experience and all that gubbins.

I hope we get him. Probably not that amazing anymore but Gills fans wanted to keep him, they just hate him for leaving them. Should be a useful player to have anyway.

Rather invest in Horlock (subject to being able to afford him) rather than Smith.

Changing tack, did anyone see the Torquay/Brum FA Cup game last w/e? Was it me, or did I spot Hewlett complete a pass to a guy wearing the same colour shirt? I did only watch the first half though, but its been bugging me all week.

Smith is/was obviously the type of player we need, but by all accounts he's past it, so we've pretty much got to rely on Iffy's judgement on this.

  He's got to do something, and its on such decisions that careers in management make or break.

Im verging on the side of rubbish but would love to be wrong.

Doesnt an aggresive midfielder need to be super fit his age is a real worry.

 I got quite excited about Matty making a sat of tackle when sat on his arse which lead up to the shot against the post.

 In his first season he did sometimes tackle, until someone injured him at Oldham, and he didn't bother after that.

he's the sort of experienced player we need in that position vut whether or not he's any better than gurney is open to speculation.

not reading too much into it myself, despite the fact they are ex-teammates i can't see iffy signing him unless he's definitely good enough.

He's joined today on a contract till the end of the season.

Good deal of experience, questionable fitness.

If it works out, great. If it doesn't we haven't been lumbered.

Its nice to see he didnt want to come here until ditched by Wallsall and Gillingham.  :-))(

Well apparently it wasnt so much that he got ditched by them, its that he couldnt settle in Walsall and he fell out with a few people at Gillingham.

A few of the fans at Walsall saw it as their whole midfield were old and slow, hence him looking no different. Here he would be different as he's the type of player we haven't had for a while, therefore allowing more freedom for our attacking players and obviously a more experienced head that offers protection for the likes of Ifil - whose pace should cover Smith if he's uber slow and O'Hanlon.

as a signing until the end of the season i don't see what we've got to lose, he'll offer us another option in the centre of midfield and added experience.

i'm not convinced he's of the standard we need but i will reserve judgment until he's settled in a bit and got some fitness.

I guess I'll have to reserve judgement on this one. He is certainly the type of player we've needed for years, but is he good enough? Time will tell. I guess its not too much of a gamble to just sign him until the end of the season. Lets all hope it works out!

I think he would be a good signing and add experience to the squad, I wouldn't play him over Gurney and Migz though.
