Title: FAO Reg Smeeton/any other old town fans
Post by: Tails on Sunday, November 27, 2005, 21:02:57
I know you've been watching the town for many a year and to settle an arguement I'm having with my dad, who would you consider our main rivals: Oxford or Bristol City??

I dont know that much - but i definetly know its Oxford.  Heard through the grapevine something about fights between Swindon and Oxford fans before Oxford had a real loyalist fanbase??

Nothing with Brizzle has ever come near.  (Not to sure on all of that though)

Plus Oxford is a lot nearer, Brizzle also have their own main rivals Rovers.

I'd inherited a healthy dislike of Bristhole, before O*ford were even in the League....and as such have loathed them with a passion ever since.

I recall the first visit to  The Manor.....when it was very much like visiting a non league ground in the cup.....bit of a laugh...their fans a bit simple.

But for younger fans it has to be O*frod......so for most, our main rivals are O*ford.

Bristhole fans have always been inherently more unpleasnt than anything O*frod could put into the field both in terms of quality and quantity and in the 70's and 80's  there were some genuinely nasty stuff.

The worst I've ever seen at the CG probably involved Rovers around 82, and rumour had their numbers were swollen by Shitheads looking for action.

Why don't we have much of a rivalry with Bristol Rovers out of interest?

Come on someone answer that because I have thought about that loads of times. Same as we dont have a rivalry with Cheltenham.

Because Cheltenham only recently came up from non league. There's a few Cheltenham fans around my college.

Rovers fans hate Shitheads, Swindon fans also hate Shitheads...so its a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

traditionally reading were our sworn enemy until little non-leauge oxford came onto the scene and they have taken over the mantle, city rovers are too fucked over each other to really give enough of a shit about us, dont get me wrong they dont like us but pure hatred is reserved for their nearer neighbours.

Railwaymen v Biscuitmen was always a fixture to attract a decent crowd because of proximity, but has never really been up on the violence scale.

I'm hard pressed to remember a decent ruck ever.

I got pelted with rocks at Elm Park by fellow Swindon fans.  I think we lost 4:0.  I remember Ken Stroud was playing.

Regarding rivalries, Oxford was always the big one because we usually were in the same division.  That slope at the Manor was a joke.

Bristol Rovers, and Reading, have been in different divisions, which is not the case for Bristol City until recently.  I expect Bristol City to escape relegation, via a fat checque book in January.  We will be back to Oxford and Bristol Rovers as well as Cheltenham as rivals, for at least a season.  Unless things change, it's the Conference if we are lucky.  How are Forest Green doing?

In the 70s and 80s I think that Rovers fans were more 'mature' than their City counterparts.

I recall visiting Ashton Gate to watch us play Rovers not long after Eastville burned down. Absolute cracking game that we won 4-3 (I think ?). It was slightly marred by the fact that you had hooligans from 3 clubs in (and out of) the ground looking for a punch up.

I hate city more for the obvious reasons, living closer to bristol than to swindon is quite depressing. I don't feel as though I have much hate inside me for oxford as I have never experienced an oxford/swindon game and Don't really know what their fans are like but my dad has told me about that mostly as he always does  :D  I like bristol rovers and have always said that if swindon were no more I would possible concider going to watch them and wind my cousins up.

It is defo Oxford, I remember many a nasty encounter at the Manor Ground.  I even hate going shopping in Oxford as it feels like a betrayal!!!  Bristol City doesn't invoke the same feelings but they're second on the list.  I can't remember playing them much years ago so maybe that is why Oxford were hated more.
I also remember that game at Elm Park against Reading, bricks flying and everything outside the ground - those were the days!!!!

I would have said Bristol City - mainly because in the last 15 years we've been in the same league as City far more seasons than the same league as Oxford!
I've almost forgotten who Oxford are....

I've never been to Oxford and Don't ever tend to. I hate the place with a passion. City have nothing over them. Even saying the word makes me cringe.

My Dad traditionally thinks of City as the rivals, although as has been said the younger generation see it as Oxford, but they only joined the league in '65.  I see Oxford as the bigger game personally because it's mutual dislike, City will never hate us more than Rovers.

Yes,the one consolation of going down could be all the derby games. In some ways though i much prefer being able to look down on the
  :ha: pox.

i remember hearing that 5 years ago when we got relegated from division 1. "Think of all the good derbies we'll have, and the gates for them will also be a bonus". Well as know that didn't happen, and we were even more shit, which I fear will be the case again next season if we get relegated.

I feel Chippenham is starting to be a bit more hated.
I bloody hate them  :x
My most hated:
1. Bristol City
2. Chippenscum
3. Poxford
4. Reading
5. Cardiff

I never hate Rovers, used to watch them when I was a kid.

I'm from Chippenham, Pewsham to be exact, so I can't agree with that Blink!  There's too many Swindon fans in Chippenham for it to become hated, plus they're too far away in terms of quality!

If we're going to start hating Chippenham we may as well start hating the mac dons   Although on central news they already seem to view it as a fucking derby :-))(
For me its the pox i hate with a passion, its always nice to beat the shitty but nothing compares to the hatred i feel for the scum!I hate the colour yellow because of those fuckers :? .

Never mind mate :soapy tit wank:

There aren't that many Swindon fans in Chippenham either, given the size of the place.

I've always loathed City more than Oxford but I put that down to being from West Wiltshire, family being City, playing them more often, and detesting anywhere South of the river when I lived there.  It's a very personal thing in most people's cases I would have thought.

im with you there mate, hate chippenham with a passion. only reason there good is because of Calne, i would say the story but can't be arsed. the FA Vase final had 6 calne players in from only 2/3 seasons before.

i would agree with that 5 pretty much. except rovers for cardiff. some mates like rovers.
