Did you see Top Gear this evening?

If so what do you make of the new Focus ST? (Apart from the hideous colour!)

New Focus ST is a corking car.

Apparantely it's lapping the Nurburgring quicker than the Focus RS!

Abit on the heavy side though at 1350 kg +

I will pass judgement when the new Type R arrives next year because thats meant to be abit special.

If it does what the current Type R did in 2001 and kicks every other competitor into the weeds and pisses on them then i'll be happy.

New Type R comes out late 2006/early 2007

It is meant to be something very special

Because of Honda's believe that turbocharging is unnecessary the new Civic Type R will be a normally aspirated, variable valved timed screamer with roughly 220 bhp and very low weight compared to it's competitors.

Expect 0-60 mph in low 6 seconds maybe high 5's.

It will handle superb too and probally have the same amazing gearbox as the current Type R.

Seen that article before Compo, most of it is media hype and speculation.

I doubt they'll put a 2.4 litre lump in it, more likely to be another very highly tuned 2 litre with around 220 bhp like the DC5 Integra Type R.

I will judge that when i see it.

Just saw my first new Civic when out for lunch, hadn't realised it was already available in normal spec.  Quirky looking, better than the old one IMHO, it's naturally agressive so I'd imagine the new Type R will be tidy, looked less like a hand held vacuum cleaner than the old one.

They knew the market in 2001 too, blew the competition away. Where everyone else was putting 150-170 bhp engines in their very hottest hatches, Honda came along with a lightweight hatch with 200 bhp!

The type R might be great engine wise, but the normal civic, which old people buy, is distinctly average compared to the opposition like the MK I focus IMHO.  Not too keen on the looks of the civic, and the new focus seems a bit mundane and safe compared to the old one too.  Big fan of the styling of the new golf and leon though

It's got to be Ford for me.  Honda are a bit too clever and frankly nerdish, whereas if you've got a Ford ST you've got balls and you're probably wearing a pair of designer jeans.  I'd kill for an ST, might even go for it in Orange too, though it'd clash with my STFC scarf...

Think the new ST may take some beating, even with the bold colour range!

Type R is well matched in performance to the Focus RS.

Focus RS has 15 more horsepower but is heavier.

Both do 0-60 in 6.4 secs

Both do 0-60 in 16 secs

New Focus ST is heavier than both but has 217 bhp so should be even with the two of them.

Well it's a matter of opinion.

The RS was £4k more for a start, is 4 wheel drive and turbocharged.

The Type R is front wheel drive and normally aspirated.

Both offer a different sort of drive but performance wise there is nothing in it.

Both lap various circuits in the same time and both do straight line drag races the same.

In the winter, the Focus RS would be the favoured choice cos of 4 wheel drive BUT that differential is very annoying i'm told and cuts in too much.

Tiff Needell prefers the Type R and thats good enough for me.
