The injuries are stupid, I've had about 8 players get injured in training

Rhys Evans, Sean O'Hanlon, Charlie Coymn-Platt, Kyle Lapham, Tony Thorpe, Christian Roberts, Rory Fallon.

Worst bit is, the time to recover.

I have only played 1 game, drew 1 1 at home to Oldham. They equalised deep into stoppage time! When I scored the stewards struggled to hold back the fans!  :mrgreen:

I have a few injuries as well. Mostly my midfield! I have quite a big squad mind, I sold Nicho for 110k to Southampton and have spent it all on Polish and Slovaks for 5k each! 9 points after 7 games, not the best start!

Ive fine combed the MV hint guide and create alittle one for creating tactics. This should tell you what to look out for. Eg, there is no point having a midfielder tracking back all the time if he has crap stamina stats.

Goalkeepers - Ref / Han / Com / Jum
Wingbacks - Pos / Tac / Pac / Ant / Sta
Fullbacks - Pos / Tac / Pac / Ant
Centrebacks - Tac / Jum / Pos / Hea / Str / Mar / Bra / Tea
Att Wingers - Pac / Dri / Pas / Off / Cre / Cro
Att Mids - Pas / Off / Cre / Tec / Dri
Def Mid - Wor / Jum / Tac / Sta / Pos
Striker - Pac / Acc / Dri / Tec / Fin / Off
Targetman - Jum / Hea / Str / Off

Tips.

Check if players around are being dealt with by opposition. Move fast forward again a slow forward, good jumper against a bad jumper, stronger against a weakling.

If opposition have a creative striker then deal with him by man marking. It'll work if he has low bravery stat. If your DM is a good tackler then set it to hard.

If your winning a game then go defensive and counter attacking, slow the tempo down and put fast attacking players on 'run with ball'. If your not winning ask your team to play as wide as they can.

Dont set your creative players to 'Pressing'. This will give them space to create

If you have hardworking forwards then get them to close players down.

Set Pieces - Anyone with high jumping, anticipation attacking the ball. Those with off the ball put in the area for rebounds.

Set up Striker and DM to hold up ball only if high stregnth, dribbling and technique.

Other things to consider....

Cross - Only if you have big strikers with good jumping and heading.
Dribbling - Only if they have good agility and balance too.
Finishing - Must have good Off the ball movement, balance and strength.
Heading - Must have good jumping too.
Longshots - Possible freekick taker also.
Longthrows - Always a fullback.
Marking - Poor marking = Zonal and deeper. Hard tackler if possible.
One on Ones - Good dribbling and finishing work in conjuction with this.
Passing - 15+ = Short or mixed, below ten = Long.
Penalty Taking - Look for high influence.
Set Pieces - Look for Longshtots and crossing also.
Tackling - Look for strength, marking but more so aggression and bravery. Great for all defenders and DM's.
Technique - Mainly for attacking players.

Aggression - Good for 50-50 balls.
Aniticapation - Look for off the ball and decisions also. Midfield mainly.
Bravery - Essential. Best with tacking. Idea for goalkeepers.
Creativity - Support your creative player with a DM.
Determination - Good for coming back from behind.
Flair - Match winners but also frustration. Use sparingly.
Influence - Captain material.
Off the Ball - Look for good pace, positioning and anticipation.
Positioning - Look for strength and anticipation. All three means a good offside trap.
Teamwork - Look for workrate and determination.
Workrate - Look for teamwork and stamina. Good if your closing down.

Acceleration - Look for stamina and workrate. A must have for wingers and pacey strikers.
Agility - Look for acceleration and dribbling. Good for attacking tactics.
Balance - Look for dribbling and strength.
Jumping - Look for heading, if player has good bravery and aggression set them to hard tackling.
Pace - Look for falir, dribbling, agility and acceleration. Set them to run from deep if possible.
Stamina - Good for closing down, having forward runs or going all out attack.
Strength - Look for tackling, jumping and marking. Good for all players.


For training needs....

Strength - This will improve Natural Fitness, Stamina, Strength and Work Rate.
Aerobic - This will improve Acceleration, Agility, Balance, Jumping, Pace and Reflexes.
Goalkeeping - This will improve Aerial Ability, Handling, Kicking, Throwing and One on Ones.
Tactics - This will improve Anticipation, Decisions, Positioning, Movement, Teamwork and Command of Area.
Ball Control - This will improve Dribbling, First Touch, Technique, Flair and Heading.
Defending - This will improve Tackling, Marking and Concentration.
Attacking - This will improve Passing and Vision.
Shooting - This will improve Finishing, Long Shots and Composure.
Set Pieces - This will improve Crossing, Corners, Freekicks, Penalties and Long Throws.

It is important when you play the game (in my view) to create your own training schedules.

Personally I have created one for my goalkeepers, my defenders, my defensive midfielders, attacking midfielders and my strikers.

It is important to do this as what is the point your defensive midfielder learning how to attack? His main concern should be keeping an eye on the back four.

Top of the league in January. 21 games without a defeat, ahead of Brizzle in second. Out of the League Cup, LDV, but still in the FA Cup have got a tricky away tie at Crewe, if I win that then its Coventry away. Sold Fallon and Nicholas, for 120 and 220k respectively so I decided to spend a bit of money. Biggest signinig is Nathan Tyson, 16 goals already, got him paired up front with Rati Aleksidze, who has 14 goals so far. Rhys is out with a broken leg too, so hav got a West Brom keeper called kuzcak in on loan. My team:

Sold Fallon in January window to Palace for £550k! Now gonna spend it on rebuilding for next season.

Fallon had scored 20 by Jan, and Thorpe finished the season with 28 - my defence was just so shit though. O Hanlon wouldn't sign new contract and agreed to sell him to Forest for £300k but it fell through as they didn't have the cash...

last year, lost in the playoff final :evil: lost thorpe and roberts on frees, by the time they left they were collectively worth £1.5m :evil: and now i cant stop leaking goals. sold all of the original defence and got new players in, they were pretty handy last year, but letting balls through regularly, shored my squad up with 5players in the last 3 days of the transfer window comin in, but its not looking good. i cant hold onto a lead, last 3 matches i scored first and lost or drew. against Franchise i was 2-0 up, 2 goals in injury time after evans got injured, then lost 2 more players to injury after i'd used all my subs. cunts  :evil:

Bolton just bought O Hanlon for £350k when he only had 1 month on his contract left and wouldn't sign a new one...

Signed Paul Okon and a couple of other defenders and a couple of foreign mids, now looking for a striker to pair with Thorpe for the start of my 2nd season.

Play 3 cb, 2 wb, 3 cm and 2 st - hoping my defence will be better this year with the experienced players I've signed....

If you cant hold a lead then you need to sort your training out(fitness wise) as thats the main problem of conceding late on and not holding onto a lead.

Mid-way through my 3rd season with STFC....

1st season- Finished 6th, out in the play-offs to Bristol Shitty :evil:
2nd season- Finished 1st after some inspired signings (Les Ferdinand, Alan Thompson, Darren Currie)
3rd season- Currently 5th, after a great start to the campaign. Expecting to drop out of the play-offs towards the end of the season though

Signings wise, i'd recommend all of the above, and Quincy Owusu Abeyie(Gooners), Wayne Cummings(Bornmuff), Chris Eagles(Man Ure) and Tommy Doherty (Shitty).

Far and away my best player though, is Rory! 18 goals in 15 caps for NZ :D

i like the new training system, much less confusing than previous incarnations.

I haven't played this at all. I remember signing Ndah for next to nothing and that's about it.

I got the new FM06 game for christmas and only just installed it this morning. Im havin trouble figuring out whats the best formations and tactics to use though.... On the other manager games i was good but this one seems a bit harder than usual.
Any tips?

I generally go 4-4-2. What I've found on all management games with Swindon is that they start off slowly. I am always around the bottom for the first 8 or so games, win one then go on a run of about 12 wins on the trot, then slow down again at xmas time.

You get decent money for players because their value goes up because they are playing well....

Its sucks though because when bein Swindon, you only start of with 9k or somethin like that.... So when you sign players, do you offer the club say 2k up front with clauses? (pay them 35k when promoted for example)

I dont buy players, nothing wrong with what we start with!!

All I've done is bought Lee Martin in on loan and thats it.

Tijarnni (sp) Babangida is a very good player people. You can sign him on a free at the start of the game and his work permit is accepted too (as hes nigerian) Hes plays on either wing and is an attackin player.

I've played about 12 games now. Mid table atm, started off well, but injuries took effect which wasn't good. Also players like Ndah lost some form for some reason. Thorpe is top goalscorer on mine and he's played ok. Fallon looks 10 times better but he's been injured.

Dexter Blackstock from Southampton. Get him on a seasons long loan or somethin. Hes awesome.
Another very good player to get (but is a midfielder) is Dave Brammer and also Tijjani (sp) Babangida.

Pair Fallon up with Roberts, they score goals for fun....

thorpe and fallon/roberts score for fun when you play direct and chuck it through the middle instead of fannying around with wingers etc

Have Proudlock in my team.... top scorer at the turn of the year with 12 in 12, Thorpe on 10 in 20. 4th in the table after a little bit of a poor run. Still beaten Bristol shitty twice so far this season, so its not all bad!

after starting a few games, and failing miserably, i've finally got some success with Barca. Tuncay and Aghahowa have been superb signings for me, I'm 1st in the league. Now to translate this to OUFC.

More strength training to increase stamina. Your team talks really affect morale. Not giving players enough/too much credit for performances especially to individuals doesn't seem to go down too well

Got employed by Wycombe when they were 23rd...had a bad start but then I got a good formation, signed Petr Mikolanda from West Ham and Tate from Swansea and been on a 4 game winning streak! Mikolanda has scored 5 in 5 and set up 2.

in 10 games ive won 5, drawn 2 and lost 3. not bad for a beginners.

erm caught on as in, they do fine for ages then they always get caught out by a through ball that goes straight through the middle OR they chase a player who plays a ball over them and then an attacker runs through and scores.

If you wanna know how crap I'm doing - Lukas Jutkiewicz is my best player!

Haven't been playing the game long, just getting to grips with it. Bit confusing though, I did quality last season.

then get them to not close down and sit back. i find just setting them to the default CB does the job. also get your FB's to be about 50% offensively/defensively and you'll be larfing you cheating little bastard

If you chop and change the back 4 they wont settle, chose a backline and stick with it, make sure you have a defensive minded midfielder in the team.

If you are losing and the morale is down, set up some friendlies against some shit teams, I really shit....even teams reserves teams. Beat them 4-0 and the morale will go up and the players will play better.

I used to make sure i had 2 DMC in the middle of the park with 2 wingers doing the attacking play.

Thorpe is class on my game, I loaned Blackstock and he was good in his first games but never scores now, Thorpe and Cureton both scored past Bristol City when I beat them 2-0 :D

About 5 teams have offerd £1.2 million for O'Hanlon, I accepted them but O'Hanlon couldn't agree terms :(

Still in my first season with Swindon (february) and am 3rd in the table. Thorpe is scoring laods for me, as is fallon, but my top scorer is Adam Proudlock. Made a great signing in Kavanagh from wigan for only 20K!

I managed to sign one good player through out pre season and that was a goalkeeper, i then made some panic signings because the team was really small and no one would sign for me, not even on loan because my training facilities were shite?!?!? if a club wants to include those kinds of things and if u got the dosh then just make up the total but to just a smidge under what they want

30 games into the 08/09 season, and i'm top on goal difference over Leicester, lowest Goals Against in the league (for 2 years running), on a 12-match unbeaten run (10 wins and 2 draws), Kyle Wilson is on 29goals overall, 23in the league, graham barrett is on 14, p/x'd roberts for Njazi Kuqi (and £400k going to leyton orient aswell), Kuqi's played 2, scored 1, and is injured :( Fallon's shite. pooks doing pretty well, seano's being hunted, so is Rhys, but i signed em all to mega long deals with £5m minimum release fee, mwahahaha!

I've no way of proving I didnt cheat - but I didnt, there wouldnt be much point really.

It wasnt easy though, and took me 2 seasons each time to win league 1 and the championship. Had a good late run (13 unbeaten, something like that) which got me into 4th on GD

when a few seasons in and players are starting to regenerate, wait til after xmas and do a search of players, max age 17 and sort by average rating. they'll be a lot of shit on there but you should be able to find the odd 16 yr old gem who can be signed for £200-£500k

tactically I play 4-4-2 with one centre mid set up defensivly and the other one slightly more creative (but forward runs mixed) wingers set to attacking etc. To be honest I think my sucess was more based on player recruitment than tactical genius.

I found that my team did really well in the prem (unexpectedly) due to my entire team having good team work, work rate and reasonable quality. set them to a high tempo game with pressing and a lot of prem teams couldnt handle it.

outside of the prem, have a good long look at scandinavian players, I signed 3 or 4 (all u21's) for a total of £300k ish, all were good.

Its long winded, but checking out the u21 squads of all european nations can be good. there are often some cheapish players who will join us, even in league 1.

right at the start of the game, offer other clubs £0 for transfer listed players. they are often desperate to get the fuckers off thier wage bill so will just let them go for nowt

Yeah, I started pissing about with individual positions last night, and won three on the bounch (scoring 11 goals).
So perhaps I am now on the right lines.....I am still only in October in my game and are 9th, so I must try and make the play offs!

Setting up each position individually is the way forward mate.

Just as long as you remember to change it when you play a different player. ie you dont really want Roberts and Fallon to be told to do exactly the same thing!

I did see your achievement, thats what gave me the idea. It was just a suggestion and to open the floor for others to pitch in with ideas.

I've just started a new game with Town, currently at the end of September, 2nd, LC third round away at Chelsea (beat Norwich away in R2). Normally playing a 442 formation, sometimes a 4231 away from home.

The key to being successful in FM2006 is definitely training. Get as many good coaches as you can, and assign them to the areas where they are strong (i.e. unclick ALL and assign them to Attacking only if their stats are good for that discipline). Makes a big difference, especially if you get good tactical coaches. Look for stats >15. One other recommendation is to get your Assistant Manager to do the half time team talk - but make sure your AssMan has good motivation stats, otherwise it can backfire.

Putting the time wasting slider up a few notches (towards max time wasting) is good too, it gives your players time on the ball to think about what they're doing, rather than looking to get rid of the ball quickly.

There are loads of tips and downloadable tactics on the SI Games forum, but you need to register. I'll post more shit later.

All other individual settings are more down to user discretion.

The following document lists pre-defined terms for player types and a set of rules to be followed by anyone wishing to build a TT&F style tactic.


GK: Goalkeeper

DC: Central defender

FB: Full-back

WB: Wing-Back

DMC: Defensive midfielder

MCd: Central midfielder with defensive responsibilities

MR/L: Deep lying wingers

MC: Central midfielder

MCa: Central midfielder with attacking responsibilities

AMC: Attacking Midfielder

AMR/L: Advanced wingers

FR/L: Wing forwards

FC: Deep lying striker

ST: Advanced striker


Home & Away

There are some basic assumptions I have made in relation to home and away systems. Some are explained in detail later on, but in simplistic terms, here they are.

Home: A good home formation should be wide with low time-wasting. Closing down should be mixed to high at the back, unless you are playing very low level management. This will focus your defenders on winning the ball quickly while your attackers are still high up the pitch. Forward runs should be high for all players except the DCs (rare) and MCd/DMC (mixed). In a 4-4-2 system wingers should be long farrowed. Creative freedom should be high up front, mixed in midfield and low at the back. Tempo is optional depending on personal preference. Passing focus should be mixed to provide the most options for players in possession.

Away: A good away tactic should be narrow with high time-wasting. Counter-attacking should be on. Closing down should be mixed to low, with my personal preference being at the higher end of rarely. Forward runs should be rare for defenders, mixed in midfield, high up front. This will ensure the team becomes a tight unit when defending rather than only relying specifically on the defenders to break up moves a lá home tactics. In a 4-4-2 system wingers should be short farrowed or no-farrowed. If no-farrowed, sarrow the FCs. That is my preferred option. I tend to use the same creative freedom settings as I do for home tactics as I want the forwards to move into space and exploit the channels. As before, tempo is optional depending on personal preference. Passing focus should be down both flanks in order to exploit the channels on a counter and to keep the ball away form potential dangerous interception positions in front of goal.


The Rule of Two

The Rule of Two is based upon the assumption that players must have a variety of acceptable passing options available to them. If players are too close together they are too easy to contain, and passing breaks down. If players are too far apart, too many ambitious balls are hit, and passing breaks down. Therefore, each player must be able to pick out someone to pass too who has a mentality within two positions of his own.

Thus, in a 4-4-2 normal tactic, the system would run as follows:


CDs: Mentality = 6

FBs: Mentality = 8/9/10

MCd: Mentality = 8/9/10

MR/L: Mentality = 11/12

MCa: Mentality = 13/15

FC: Mentality = 15/13

ST: Mentality = 17


Obviously, barrows and farrows can be used to tweak the settings further, but the basic setup must follow the above. Furthermore, individual users can tweak settings for some players, as long as they don’t stray too far from the original plan. For example, a user may want the FC to drop deeper, and for the MCa to support the attack. The MCa and FC mentalities could then be switched, with the basic rule remaining intact. This rule can easily be implemented into all formations and systems.


Radius Theory

Radius Theory assumes that creative freedom and closing down work by setting up a virtual circle around a player. Thus, if a player has a closing down of 15, he will close down any player who enters the virtual radius of 15. If he has a closing down of 5, the radius is smaller, so he will only close down when the player is on top of him. In relation to creative freedom, a player will wander around the pitch trying to find space within the defined radius of his creative freedom settings.

Logic suggests there shouldn’t be too many people on the pitch with high settings for either creative freedom or closing down. It is important in default tactics that the defence is set up correctly, with closing down/creative freedom between 3 and 5 for all defenders. However, we must assume that certain types of players have a role that employs higher settings for creative freedom/closing down. Thus, the following settings will apply to certain types of player.


DMC: Closing Down to First Notch of Often

MCd: Closing Down to First Notch of Often

MCa: Creative Freedom to First Notch of Often

AMC: Creative Freedom to First Notch of Often

FC/ST: Creative Freedom to First Notch of Often


The logic behind these settings is that the DMC or MCd will sit in front of the back four and close down opposition players before they can get too close to the last line of defence. The MCa or AMC needs to find space behind the front man, as they will be looking for opportunities to play killer passes. The FCs have high creative freedom as it will allow them to exploit the channels and pull the opposition defence out of position.

There are two types of defensive systems, one employing high closing down, the other keeping men between the ball and the goal and not committing them to the tackle unless it is absolutely necessary. I will explain this in more detail later in the post.


5x5/Defensive Line Theory

5x5 or Defensive Line Theory assumes that most teams will have a basic philosophy of five attack and five defend. Originally, the thinking here was that 5 players should have an equal defensive mentality, and five should have can equal attacking mentality. There were problems employing this type of system as there were big gaps between the attacking players and defensive players. The solution was to ensure the defensive line setting was equal to the mentality of the attacking players. Thus, attacking mentality is 15, defensive line is 15.

However, this must be slightly re-evaluated in conjunction with the Rule of Two. The Rule of Two insists on individual mentalities throughout the team, but in its normal setup has 5 players with mentalities of 10 or less, and 5 with mentalities of 11 or more, so still follows 5x5 thinking. Thus, the defensive line must be set to the same mentality as the most advanced midfielder. This will ensure the tactical framework remains tight and difficult to break down.

If employing a DMC the defensive line needs to be readjusted. Testing has indicated that the defensive line gets too close to the DMC when set above 14. If it is set higher the DMC becomes part of the defence rather than offering protective cover in front of it. The ideal settings are between 10 and 14.


Level Assumptions

The previous section of this post provides a set of simple rules for player positioning and instructions. However, in order to continue it is important to work from a set of pre-defined assumptions before designing and testing tactics at all levels. Although some may disagree with my assumptions as to what should work at certain levels, I believe them to be logical and concurrent with the generalities of how real life football works.

LLM Assumptions

This definition is for poorer quality teams in L2, plus all the Conference National and the Regional Conferences. For this level I believe tactics should be long/very direct in terms of passing style. Such a style will minimise the chance of losing the ball in build up play and will allow the team to constantly pepper the opposition area, hopefully forcing the defence into making mistakes. A quick/tall striker partnership would be ideal, as one player will win balls in the air while the other runs onto missed interceptions/headers from the defenders.

In terms of defence, keeping the defenders between the ball and the goal is more important than committing them to tackles. Thus, closing down is generally low (with the exception of the MCd/DMC, as detailed above) as it forces the attacking team to try and either score from distance or get past the last line of defence via quality through balls or breaking tackles. The emphasis is on the skill of the attackers to create chances rather than the ability of the defenders to efficiently read the game.

Mid-Quality Team Assumptions

This definition is for higher quality teams in L2 through to the poorer Premiership teams. At this level passing should be direct. In recommending this I am assuming the long ball game to be easily dealt with by higher quality defenders as their better positioning attributes will allow them to comfortably mop up aimless punts into the box. The direct balls will ensure the team will not over complicate passing moves and lose possession before the killer ball is played. Direct passing gets the ball quickly forward to the strikers who can then use the midfield for support. Strength and speed up front will be important to get the best from this tactic type as the forwards will be able to hold up the ball and let the team catch up with play or run at a retreating defence.

Defence is more down to the individual user at this level. Both closing down and sitting back defence options could work. My ideal would be to close down to mixed at home, which forces the attacking team to make quick passing decisions when trying to break down the defence as they are soon put under pressure if they hold on to the ball. The higher positioning and decision making stats at this level (speed, acceleration and bravery also being important) make this possible and it allows for your team to regain possession quickly and higher up the pitch than the LLM system. This works in conjunction with passing type, with the long ball being less useful in a tactic that is trying to win the ball high up the pitch. When playing away it would be better to close down slightly less as you will force the attack to break you down to make chances. Keeping men behind the ball will be useful as the home team is likely to have a fair amount of possession so massing the defence is a better option than trying to win the ball early.

High-Quality Team Assumptions

The definition for high quality teams is those that should be challenging for the European qualification slots in the Premiership. For this level passing should be short or mixed. My own preference is for most of the team to be set at the first notch of mixed, with the exception of the front two who are two notches less. This type of system is possession-centric (can be close to 70% against poor teams) but still offers players opportunities to pick longer balls when they are on. Obviously, passing, creativity and decision making are the most important attributes here as they will enable the player to hit the right ball at the right time more often then not. If a through ball is not on, the player will lay off an easy pass to keep possession and allow others to look for the killer ball. My preference for success with this tactic is having attacking players with pace, acceleration and good off the ball skills. One tall centre forward is also preferable, but not a must.

At home the defence should close down heavily. This is a direct contradiction of previous thinking but has method in its madness. The most frustrating issue for FM addicts seems to be the second season slump. This happens when a team has enjoyed considerable success in its first season, often overachieving, and as a result gains a higher reputation. The easiest way to gauge your reputation level is the pre-match odds screen. If you are nearly always the bookies’ favourite, and have ridiculously short odds against poorer sides, then you have a good reputation. The direct result of this is you will begin coming up against the dreaded 3-3-2-1-1 defensive system that nearly all high-level managers seem to employ against better sides. Note, teams may not start with that formation but will often switch when a goal is scored or due to other in-game factors. This system has been the bane of many a tactician’s life and is the key reason for the second season slump. So, how does high closing down counter it?

The key element in the thinking behind a high closing down defensive system countering the 3-3-2-1-1 was making a logical assumption about how often the system allowed for forward runs. I assumed that such a defensive system would tune forward runs down to a minimum and thus the single forward would have to hold up the ball for a considerable length of time before support arrived. My original thinking of low closing down for defenders fell down against this because the defenders would back off as soon as I lost possession which would allow the forward to easily hold on to the ball before laying it off to the midfield. As the 3-3-2-1-1 system has so many deep lying players, once I had lost the ball I struggled to win it back because the opposition played possession football between its two defensive lines of three without ever trying to get the ball forward. By upping the closing down for my defenders I began to pressurise the single forward as soon a she got the ball which invariably won me possession back immediately, either high up the pitch due to winning the tackle or via a throw in as the forward booted the ball out of play to relieve the pressure. As a rule of thumb I mirror the closing down with creative freedom, so the total of the two equals 20. Thus, if a player has creative freedom of 3 (standard for my DCs) then his closing down should be 17.

Although I believe away tactics, even at this level, should follow the basic premise of keeping men between the ball and goal, as your team’s reputation grows you should find yourself employing a high closing down system away against more and more sides, as they will invariably start with conservative formations. It must also be remembered that high closing down is likely to come unstuck against quality sides playing attacking football. This is because they will quickly get men forward to support the forwards which will allow them to exploit the gap behind the defensive line as it closes down space. Good sides will also have forwards of sufficient quality and technique to hold on to the ball, spin and lay off dangerous through balls.


A Brief History of Time-Wasting

Sir Bob was the original instigator of maximum time-wasting. The best thing to do here is look at his original post and then update with our current thinking about this.


Sir Bobby Moore’s Original Time-Wasting Post

When I first saw this instruction on FM 2006 I kind of dismissed it as something which would not come in as much use. I thought it would be an unsportsmanlike like style of play, killing the game by smacking the ball out of play.

BUT ....

As I was looking through my recent results hoping for inspiration on how I could improve my tactic I noticed that I was having reasonable possession, generally between 48-52% so most games were balanced and but my attacks seemed poorly constructed and I gave the ball away a lot, mainly in the middle of the pitch. In my experience, counter attacking is probably the most effective method of attack but it forfeits possession so you spend a lot of time defending. I decided to try out time-wasting and it made a huge difference. I played a few games on full match and was seeing definite benefits, so I decided to test it out.

I started a new save game, with West Ham as I know them best. I got to the start of the season and saved the game 3 times: V1, V2 and V3. This way there will be minimal influences on results from other areas as I was using the same tactic (apart from time-wasting), the same coaches, schedules, injuries, etc, etc.

In V1 I used no time-wasting. I noticed that I was not having very much possession at all, roughly 45% each game, and was giving the ball away here, there and everywhere. I played 15 games, mainly losses and draws. In V2 (mixed time-wasting) we were having 48-52% possession but were still losing the ball fairly often and not creating the best of chances. Finally I tested V3, with time-wasting on full. We dominated games and created loads of chances. We played fantastic football and comfortably beat sides like Man Utd and Newcastle in a way I have not done with West Ham since CM4

Time-wasting seems to be an excellent foil for wide, high-tempo football with a lesser skilled side or counter attack. The midfield have a lot of the ball when playing it and the build up is methodical and precise, some of the passing is beautiful to watch.

NOTE: Creative Freedom is important when playing with high time-wasting other wise players will knock the ball around all day and not create anything.


Sir Bobby Moore’s Second Time-Wasting Post

I have recently thought more about time-wasting.

For you to understand we are going to have to change the way we think about sliders. Instead on having 0 to 20, change your way of thinking to -10 to 10.

Now, if you imagine that 0, smack bang in the middle, is the standard amount of time-wasting, the player will not hurry himself, nor particularly take his time. Then, for example, -1 makes him slightly more hurried so he will pass the ball quicker and try not to stay in possession of the ball for any longer than needed.

Therefore when you start to think about -5 to -10 you'll realise that the player wants to get rid of the ball at all costs and just pass, no matter if it puts another player in trouble or gives away the ball all together. So you can imagine that any attack set up in this manner will be very unlikely to score, with passes going astray extremely often and the striker trying to shoot before he has composed himself etc.

Now if you imagine a time-wasting of 3, the player will be slightly more laid back. He will have time to think about the pass he is about to make, therefore low anticipation players will be able to keep up with the game, and players with a poor passing stat will not have to make a tricky pass as it is the first he sees, he could hold on to the ball and wait for something else to arise.

The conclusion of this is that time-wasting should rarely drop below the centre unless you have extremely good players and even then they would struggle. The worse your players, the further to the right you go. It is not necessarily the worst, if you are going for a real upset, i.e. trying to win the Premiership with Sunderland then time-wasting must be high to allow your players to play to the best of their ability.

Current Thinking on Time-Wasting

Sir Bob’s second post is the key to how time-wasting actually works. It is a fantastic tool for teams with low reputations or for counter-attacking tactics in away games. What it does is ensure the team keeps possession at all costs, rather than hitting risky attacking balls to the front men. When used in conjunction with a tight, sitting back defensive system it ensure your team is exceptionally hard to break down and will counter-attack only when obvious chances present themselves. If a Rule of Two system is being employed, the defensive mentality of the back line will also ensure possession is maintained as they won’t hit aimless through balls unless under considerable pressure, but instead play simple, possession friendly football across the back line.

However, high time-wasting falls down against teams that are playing with an exceptionally defensive tactic. They too will time waste, so both teams will be concentrating on holding onto the ball in the back line rather than trying to attack. This is fine if playing for a draw or trying to sneak a one-nil win against a better side. It is not fine if you are the superior team and need the win. In such a situation time-wasting should be very low, as then your team will look to get the ball into danger areas as quickly as possible and won’t worry so much about holding onto possession in defensive areas. One of the main reasons behind the success of the 3-3-2-1-1 is the user team being too focused on time-wasting. This will be especially relevant for those built tactics related to the theories in Sir Bob’s or my threads as we were both big advocates of high time-wasting.


Other Factors to Consider When Building Tactics

Creative Freedom

Many posts on the forum are of the assumption that the creative freedom slider stops a player from obeying other individual instructions. If it is set high then a player will be more unlikely to do what he is told, if set low then he will adhere to instructions. I believe there are elements of truth to this, but it is not the whole story.

A player on high creative freedom will inevitably look for options in attack as soon as he gets the ball. If he decides that the creative/killer ball is on he will play it. Sometimes it will come off, sometimes it won't. That is the very nature of creativity in all walks of life. If he decides the creative/killer ball is unfeasible, he will play a safe ball and move into position to try again. Hence, decision making is also key to a truly great creative player. A creative player with good decision making will invariably choose the right time to play the right ball. Other factors will influence whether it comes off, such as the defensive stats of the opposition players trying to intercept the ball/tackle the creative player and the off the ball/decision making stats of the player trying to pick up the pass, but on the whole a player with good creativity/decision making will create chances. Alternatively, a player with good creativity/bad decision making will often try to play unfeasibly difficult balls that will result in interceptions and counter attacking moves more often than creating chances for his own team. When setting instructions for such a player, be aware that giving him total freedom will likely result in you losing possession and having to defend quick countering moves as often as getting into scoring positions yourself.

Creativity is not flair and must be managed accordingly. A creative player creates chances for others; a flair player creates chances for himself. Thus, whereas a flair player can be closely marked and looking out of the game, only to do something extraordinary and score out of nothing, a creative player needs time and space in which to operate, so he has more opportunity to spot the creative pass. Thus, when positioning a creative player, make sure he is loosely zonal marking with closing down set to a minimum, so that he is always in the maximum amount of space to receive a pass. If he has excellent decision making/teamwork/workrate/off the ball, he could also be assigned a free role, which would allow him to rove about the pitch looking for space and thus become more useful. Creative players are often low on bravery, so can be marked out of the game by hard-men opponents. Be aware of this if you feel your creative player is not performing, and possibly look to play him deeper which will draw his marker out of position and create space in front of him for others to exploit.

Finally, in terms of creativity for the whole team, be careful setting it too high for too many players. If you do this, too many people will be looking for the killer ball, and your truly creative players will have less opportunity to influence a game. Also, too many passes are likely to be intercepted as they are being hit from unfeasible positions on the pitch, and possession will turn over almost the second you have the ball. Tweak it high for a few players, and let the others focus on more mundane tasks, such as defending or scoring goals.

Off the Ball

I have read a fair number of posts complaining that the FCs refuse to stay in the middle of the pitch and drift wide. The standard response to this is to reduce creative freedom to the lowest notch for the front men. This is nonsensical. Forwards drift wide to find space to get the ball. If they stay in one position all match they are too easy to mark out of the game. Forwards and attacking-minded midfielders need to be encouraged to look for space. In this respect, a high level of creative freedom alongside excellent off the ball stats will be extremely beneficial. If one FC moves wide to pick up the ball it won’t matter as long as other players have the requisite creative freedom and off the ball to move into the space he has created. Higher levels of creative freedom have to be regarded as optimal for forward players in order to create space and move the defence around.

Teamwork

A player with high teamwork attribute will religiously obey the manager’s instructions, whether they are appropriate for the situation he is in or not. Teamwork is great when you have applied the optimum settings for the tactical situation your team is in, but will actually be disadvantageous if you have set inappropriate instructions. For example, if you have set closing down to 20 then a player with good teamwork will constantly close down, no matter what position/situation he finds himself in. This is where the maximum or minimum slider settings begin to fail and why moderation must be applied. If a player with high teamwork is told to close down to 20, then he will do it without fail; if he is told to close down often but not always, his decision making becomes more important, as he then has to decide on the appropriate moment to apply the closing dsown instruction.

A player with low teamwork is obviously more difficult to manage as you can never be sure whether he will obey instructions or not. This will be doubly difficult if he has bad decision making, as he will regularly do what he wants, no matter if it is a good decision or not. All a manager can do with this sort of player is try to ensure he is in a position that won't cause huge harm to his own team, but where his unpredictability will sometimes come off and create chances/opportunities to score.

Decision Making

Decision making is hugely important in how you instruct a player. The higher the decision making stat, the more mixed instructions you can give him, as you are sure he will take the right option at the right time. Thus, a central defender with good defensive stats and high decision making can be asked to close down to mixed, as you can trust him to apply the instruction when required. A central defender with bad decision making should be told to close down rarely, which will keep him between the striker and the goal and thus make the attacking player try to go past him, rather than committing himself to a rash challenge. This can be applied right down the line for every position on the pitch. If a player has poor decision making, give him firm instructions to do a job; if he has good decision making, trust him to do the right thing. For a winger, for example, you could tell him to choose between through balls and crossing; with them both set to mixed, as you believe he will invariably pick the right option. I could go on and on about this, but I'm sure it is pretty obvious by now.


Multiple Tactics

Although it is very possible to win continuously while only using one tactic, my own penchant is to employ a system of three. My formation preference is to use the 4-1-2-1-2 Diamond for a standard home and away system, with an alternate 4-2-3-1 for away games. I prefer to use direct tactics away from home, even when I am in charge of a quality side, as, in reference to Cleon’s guide to passing types, direct is designed to get the ball to the forwards quickly and is thus ideal for counter-attacking. My 4-1-2-1-2 away is therefore direct and counter-attacking, whereas the 4-2-3-1 alternate is more focused on possession and thus uses shorter passes at higher levels.


Testing and Results

The tactics here have been hugely tested during my FM career game. The LLM tactics were tested with Vauxhall Motors, the Mid-Quality tactics with Huddersfield Town and the High-Quality tactics with Lyon and Juventus.

Vauxhall Motors: 5 seasons. League Positions: Nationwide Conference North 1st, Nationwide Conference National 7th, 1st, Coca-Cola League Two 1st, Coca-Cola League One 2nd. The team also reached two FA Trophy finals, winning the non-league double in the third season. In the first season in the football league they won the LDV Trophy.

Huddersfield Town: 3 Seasons. League Positions: Coca-Cola League Two 1st, Coca-Cola League One 1st, Coca-Cola Championship 1st. The team also reached two FA Cup finals when in L1 and the Championship, winning it in the second appearance.

Lyon: 1 Season. League Positions: French Ligue One Orange 1st

Juventus: 1 Season: League Positions: Lega Calcio Seria A TIM 1st. The team also won the UEFA Cup, having failed to qualify for the Champions League under the previous management. They also won the Coppa Italia.

Sounds a bit complicated to me.

This is how my season ended,we fell away in the last few games mainly due to one of my strikers missing the last 3 games. I beat Hartlepool 1-0 in the Play Off Final.

I was in pre-season and started following some of the tactics on this thread about 7 pages ago, but I lost my first 3 pre-season games so it wasnt looking promising.

Here is my update:

I am Swindon and AS Roma. Finished third on the last day of the season and met Bristol City in the play off final. (Mr Matt Heywood got sent off after 15 minutes.)

Bought a few fringe players on the free (As the board only gave me 6k) and sold no none.

As Roma boss, I won the League, Italia Cup and Uefa Cup all in my first season. Champions League beckons.
(bought in Malcolm Christine on loan, As back up).

5th Season.......only 6 games in and currently 8th (championship), don't think i'll stay there much longer though,
but I have about £4M to spend on players if necessary....I need a decent striker!!!! The rest of my team is good,  but can't find a decent striker.
I still have Fallon, who won't leave! He's worth 2.3M but I offer him to clubs at 1.9M, and no-one wants him.
Also,  I have turned down about 8 job offers, and my loyalty rating is only 9!!!

Thought I'd give you lot an update on my latest Swindon game. Going well in the league (as the following screenies will testify). Lost in R3 of the Carling Cup away at Chelsea, and in R3 of the FA Cup at home to QPR.

Sold Seano to Wigan for £1.8M, turned down paltry bids for Ifil and Fallon.

For some reason i havent got the option bar to offer players to certain clubs!?, i.e i can only offer to everybody and not specific clubs.

I just got offered a new contract by Crawley  8)  £100 a week...... :|  Cunts....Ah well, it was only for a year (originally 3 years) and when i get promoted, i will demand a better one.

More basic than the later versions! but you can get through a season quickly as there's only so many things you can do.

I can never get Swindon promoted as the stupid game has already got rid of the best players before you start it, I am playing as Hereford at the moment, top of the 3rd Div with 7 games to go, won the LDV (or whatever it was called then) and Steve White is my top scorer with 20 goals.

End of first season, just got promoted via playoffs. :beers:

Finished sixth in the league, thanks to Bradford failing to win on final day of season. Got Bristol City in playoff semis, beat them 1-0 at the CG and drew 1-1 at AG, after extra time. Then went on to beat Gillingham 2-1 in the final. 8)

For 1st season starts I recommend signing Gurns permanently (now 33 and still putting in good performances in the champ) and getting Dave Brammer and Paul Shaw on freebies.  Pick up Johansen and Turunen on freebies as well but they only join at the end of their contracts (Nov & Dec respectively)  Proudlock is available free as well.

Is that Champ 2? Think it is, I remember that used to play it all the time until about 2 years ago. Best I could ever do was Swindon 3rd in the Premiership and won the FA Cup while in the 1st Div. Quality game! Have to buy Peter Thorne on a free at the start of the first season

I've got Thorne once; sometimes bigger clubs come in for him as he's on a free and he goes to them instead.

It is Champ 2, it is good playing that sometimes as I said above, as it doesn't take long to play a few games.

6 games left of the conference season for me and im top by 12 points and i am also in the FA Trophy final. Just wondered though, why the hell have my team started playin really shit???? I most certainly did not cheat. Its simple to be successful, as I mentioned in a previous post - tactics and training.

Find a good tactic that works, and stick with it through the whole season, tweaking as appropriate to get the best out of the players. I used to develp my own tactics for FM2005, but I haven't had the time on FM2006, so I've tried various different tactics with different teams. By far the best was TTF's tactics - if you log onto the official SI Games forum, you can download them from there. I used that tactic all season and those are the results.

Training is probably the most important aspect, and much under rated and understood aspect of the game. There are two key aspects: Good schedules and good coaches. Its easy to find a range of schedules, but they are next to useless if your coaches are crap. So, do a search on unemployed coaches, hire as many as you can with good attributes, and then select them to specialise in one aspect of training, the idea being to get as many stars as possible for each discipline. You'll probably need 3 or 4 good specialist coaches for each discipline. Luckily, staff don't appear to be affected by the wage budget, so you can get as many as possible.

I was luckily financially, by selling Seano to Wigan in the January tx window for 1.8M. That put the club in profit and the board put 10k extra on my wage budget. Also try to tie up key players like O'Hanlon, Evans, Fallon and Ifil on longer contracts right at the beginning, even if you exceed the wage budget slightly it pays dividends long term as you don't lose them for nothing in January.

Of course, my next aim is to survive in the Championship.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but there is a new patch available on the SI website, with all the January transfer updates. So we now have Peacock (ace), Brown permanently (good), Benjamin on loan (send him back) etc etc.

After downloading it last night, i decided to get back into it in a big way. Set-up a network game with my flatmate, he starts as Northampton (for the money), i start at Barnet (for Graz 8) ) and then we see how it goes. Beat him in a friendly, but haven't started then season yet.

Then i started a game with STFC, which i was up 'til 5am playing. 4th after 10 games, unbeaten away from home. Finding a 4-5-1, with Peacock as lone striker is working very well. Took Cox's advice about training, and it appears to be working a charm. I'd recommend signing Gavin Strachan to work with either Gurns or Smith in DM, you can pick him up quite cheap.

Gavin Strachan is a good signing. You can get him for 2k or less. Scored about 8 goals from DM as well.

My first choice line up was:

GK - Evans

D/WB L - Nicho
D/WB R - Jenks
DC (L) - Ifil
DC (R) - O'Hanlon (until I sold him)

ML - Ndah
MR - Shakes
MC (DM) - Strachan
MC (AM) Miglioranzi (also Captain as he has the highest Influence stats of the whole squad)

ST (L) - Fallon
ST (R) - Curo

Curo got 25 goals, not the highest in L1 though. The tactic seems harsh fitness wise on the two wingers/wide midfielders, so you need good backup on the bench to replace them both between 55-65 minutes in.  

If you really want to try a good tactic, the best that I've tried by far is TTF's. He has a LQ tactic (hoof!!!) for really crap teams, MQ for L2 through to lower Premership teams, and HQ for the Chelsea's of this world - I used MQ throughout. I'll post them up on here if somebody tells me how, so you can download and try for yourselves. I'll caveat that by saying I've only tried it with Town, but the results speak for themselves.

I'll provide an update on my season in the Championship when I've played a few games. The aim is most definitely survival !!!

Note that I am still playing on V6.01, hence why I've still got Fallon in the squad. The new patches (6.02 and 6.03) weren't out when I started the game, and they wouldn't have affected this game anyway.

Not played with Liverpool - if you'd have said Spurs I could have really helped you!

That said, there are some good cheap foreigners you can look out for. I recommend Lebohang Mokoena (RSA -AM/F C), Benedict Vilakazi (RSA - AM/F C), Anthony Vanden Borre (BEL - DRC Anderlecht), Daniel Agger (DEN - DC Brondby (if he's not already in your squad)), Freddy Guarin (COL -DM), Sergey Kisily (BLR - FC). There are loads of others around. Log into the SI Games Forum, there is a whole thread for Liverpool there (which I haven't read) which should highlight the strengths and weaknesses of their squad.

Vanden Borre may set you back up to 2M, but he's worth it. The others can all be picked up for < 1M. Even if they are crap, their value will sky-rocket at Liverpool, so you can always sell them off for a good profit.

 Probably doesn't help much really as I don't know enough about the Liverpool squad from a FM 2006 perspective.

Might give fm2006 another go later. Don't mind getting a few hints for good signings but just using other peoples tactics and training schedules seems like it must take the fun out of it a bit. Surely it's makes it a bit like just sitting through someone elses game of fm. That said my genius attacking 5-3-2 formation which used to work so well for me in the oldskool cm4 doesn't seem to be doing the job this time. But experimentation is all part of the game.

Agreed, but it depends on how much time you can afford to spend developing and testing tactics and training schedules - both are very time consuming. That said, very satisfying if you develop a tactic that succeeds. I managed to create an excellent 4231 tactic for FM2005 that just sucks in FM2006, played around a bit and got pissed off with it all.

I don't like signing all the players everyone else recommends as that does take away some of the realism in the game. You don't get much option with Town though, given you start with a 7k transfer budget and no flex in the wage structure. I just get my scouts out and about looking for talented youngsters all over the world (Scandanavia is a good bet for cheap players who don't need work permits).

scandinavia has been an ace shout on fm/cm for years. I remember alwsays signing Yassir Bassir on some old ones. The was still scoring 15+ a season from an attacking midfield role when I got Rushden into the premiership. Apart from the key attacking ones his stats were shit but he could do the bussiness.

tactics dont take long to work out. i start with the basic 442 then set my tactics which will be constant, then change the sliders depending on the opposition. to make tactics i consider how i want to play, how my players can play and how the opposition will play.

training is a doddle too, all i've done is made an attacking and defending schedule so its a bit more tailored to their needs

In my game its the end of January and Chelsea havnt lost yet. In fact they've only dropped 6 points :|  wankers :wanker:

I have played with them for a while now. The problem is the crowds. I have got them into the Championship, and lost in the playoff final the last two seasons for the Prem. Most games, they only seem to get 1000-2000 attendance, so you are very reliant on playing big teams in preseason, getting lucky draws in the Cups, and flogging your best player every so often... and signing teenagers plus a load of old stagers as player/coach, who hardly demand any wages.

Currently 15th in Prem. Was bottom, but in last four games I have beaten Chelsea 2-0 at home, drew 1-1 at Old Trafford, and beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield!
Might have a chance of staying up after all!

Currently 7th in league two with Crawley Town, after one win and 3 draws....I should have won all the games i'v played so far, but my strikers seem to keep missing one on ones (James Constable, mainly) or my team are all over them, then the opposition have one attack and score from it!

Ah well, im sure i will be picking up some more wins sooner or later.

Btw that no cd patch does not work with the 6.0.3 data patch. Not sure it works with 6.0.2 either but I can upload another patch for that one. If people want to roll back their data patch I can also help you with that.

DV85, in your My Documents folder there's a folder called 'Sports Interactive'. Within that go to the football manager 2006 folder and then the games folder. All your saved games are stored in there.

I have just got back into Fm 2006 again. Started a game with Yeading in the Conference South which I will be mostly playing today!!!

League clubs keep offering me jobs. I am currently 12th with Yeading who are expected to battle bravely against relegation. Wrexham have offered me a job which I have delayed. I want to finish what I have started at Yeading though and think I will decline their offer. Hopefully my chairman will recognise my loyalty.

I started my new game with the data update last night. Played 2 friendlies and lost 1-0 to both Palermo (WTF?) and Canvey Island :oops: .

I'm desperatley trying to get some new players in on the cheap. Sold C Taylor for £4k and am selling the hobo for £16k in a bid to raise funds.  

Managed to get a 17yr old centre back from QPR on loan for the season who looks pretty good. I forget his name though, sounded African. I'm signing a young keeper from QPR as well for a BANK BUSTING £2K. anything is better than Bulman

I finished 2nd in the end on goal difference. Shitty held Doncaster to a draw and I beat 2nd place Swansea with 10 men for the majority of the game. Fantastic.

I might post the tactics up later, but it's really a Swindon tactic (due to players). You could emulate it though I guess.

Midway through my 5th season with Swindon in the Championship, started getting a bit bored, decided to make it known i wanted the Villa job, with O'Leary in trouble. Did the same again a month later, and found my job at STFC become "very insecure". So i resigned, and i'm now waiting for a decent job to become available. Ultimately though, i'll get bored waiting and accept an offer from a crap Championship side, which will lead me to quit the game.

After a totally shite season, went on to lose 1 of my last 16 games - (W11 D4 L1)  :mrgreen:  and made the play offs. Drew 0 - 0 with Huddersfield in 1st leg, then battererd them 4-1 away. I'm facing Swansea in the final, with both Ifil (sold to them for £60k as i hate him) and Fallon likely to play

No, i don't think it's that....Managed to get them from relegation strugglers to winning the conference title. Not forgetting winning the FA Trophy  :wink: It's just my tactics that i have always used, no longer seem to work  :?

You do have to change tactics to suit players, style of oppostition and division you're in.

Yeah i know, but the tactics worked well enough at the start of the season  :?  Now half way through, they've gone to pot....And any other tactic i attempt to use, doesnt work at all.

What's your players morale like? Try warning them over poor performance it worked for me once, as long as they are happy to begin with. I find sometimes my team has a bad spell half way through to towards the end. Change the tactics slightly. It takes a couple of games to kick in but things might improve.

One final thing. Don't underestimate the importance of mental and physical attributes, especially in the lower leagues.

that sounds about right really, you can't use the same tactics all the way through because the game is a bit more intelligent than before and teams will know your gameplan. ian atkins style.

The majority of my players' morale is fairly good, but i think i need to warn them more often, like you say. And i think the half time/full time team talks i give, are slightly lenient.

It is mental. I managed to win the Super Cup and got through to the knockout stages of the Champions League - beat Juve 6-0, the cheating Italian scum. Then it all went Pete Tong in the Carling Cup 4th round, playing Everton three days after thumping them in the league, and lost 2-1.

The main problem is the lack of strength in depth in midfield, and the lack of real quality wingers with good crossing stats. The key is to get two good wingers in right at the start - ideally Downing and Lennon if you can get them, but its bloody tough. Boro want 15M for Downing and you only get a 12M budget.

In my game, Gerrard got injured for 6 weeks, but I reckon you'll probably play enough games to get to the magic number. Else just provide evidence of his injuries. I'm only at the start of December, and I reckon every member of the first team sqaud has been out with at least one injury. At one point, I had enough injured players to field a crocked 11 team!

Its a good test of how good you are, and no-one has done it yet!

I have Robbie Fowler for Swindon in the championship(my second season). He's alright, but his pace is 2.

6 pace for me, I tend to use him sparingly. I think he is currently my 4th or 5th choice striker.

anyone notice on fm2006 that if you play 2 up front the one one the right hand side bangs in the goals, where as the one on the left doesnt score as many!!

Gary Hooper played upfront with Marlon King for my Watford team for a whole season....Hooper scored 25 in about 35....King scored 15 in about 35ish....

Then start of the next season King has scored 10 in 6....and Hooper 2 in 4....

why the change in form....because they had switched sides.....

i have my left-hand striker slightly withdrawn from the right-hand striker, who is usually my poacher. cisse has scored shitloads there for me.

that said, my other striker often chips in with just as many goals sometimes.

If you play a right footed striker on the left side of the centre he'll get less goals than on the right.

After winning the play off final in 05/06, was in the championsip 06/07.

Signed some decent (but oldish) players, Heidar Helgusson, Graham Kavanagh, David Thompson & Stephen Caldwell.

Was midtable for most of the season, then the inspired signing of Antoine Siberski for £0 ( 19 games 17 goals 9 assists) shot me into 5th. Sadly my luck finally ran out and I lost the play off final 2-1 to Palace.

Some more wheeler dealing in 07/08 pre season including the signing of 2 columbian internationals Cardenas & Humberto Mendoza (who half of europe is trying to buy off me) signed an aussie striker called Scott McDonald and paid decent money for Noe Paramot and Stephen Bywater. Also got Rincon on loan from man u all season who is ace.

When I turned it off last night my record was P32 D6 L1, but still only 5 points clear of Villa, who somehow managed to A. get relegated despite having good players and B. keep that team together in the championship. I'm a good 15 points clear of Norwich in 3rd though.

Those of you who have Cardenas (si pie and someone else?) where do you play him? left footed right wingers piss me off. I've trained him up to be a striker and hes doing pretty well for me now - took half a season to get him "accomplished" though and he was a bit crap in the meantime

I play Cardenas in AMC, but he's still so young so I use him sparingly. All of his stats have/are approaching 20s except physical stats. He's the best player in my squad at responding to training!

Most of Cardenas apperances have been off the becnch for me, only just started him up front because Siberski was a money grabbing jew and has signed a pre-contract with Villa for next season.

I rescued his career FFS. He's never playing for me again. I managed to piss off half my squad and the fans by saying he's be shit recently to the media and fining him 2 weeks wages for being unproffesional. He is currently being re-trained with the U19's as a goalkeeper. Shouldnt really play whilst drinking :D

I'm struggling.

Only using the original game, no updates or owt.  Also I'm only running English leagues, so have a really small database of players.

Won League 1 at the first attempt, followed by relegation, followed by winning League 1 again with a goal difference of nearly 50.  4 games into the Championship again and I've lost them all.

Due to the small database I find it very hard to actually find players who are any good although I do have Fitz Hall who is pretty damn good, also signed Dong Fangzhoo from Utd who looked good pre-season but fucked off to the Olympics the day the season started.

No matter where I look it's impossible to sign anyone good enough, all because my machine isn't fast enough to run other leagues.

Searched on players mentioned on here, but most of them don't exist in my game!

I play a 4-4-2 diamond.

Works pretty well, but you have to tinker with the individual player tactics to get it right.

My problem is finding a decent striker that actually scores goals. Think my top scorer has only got about 19 in one season, but both strikers score equally and the AMC chips in with loads. Hopefully if I can get that striker that will get me 25+ a season I'll be laughing.

If you want a decent young DMC, get Nik Besagno (USA), his stats go up and he always plays well (at least rating 8 per game). Managed to keep him which was lucky, as his contract was up in the summer before the Prem.

Scott McDonald has done well for me in the championship, finishing is only 15 though, so he does miss a few. Makes up for it by being creative though - gets as many assists as goals.

I had a look at Besagno , but got priced out of the deal. hes playing for some eyetye team now

Ajax & Napoli are two good european teams to play with. You get CL football with Ajax. I think Napoli start in Serie C, so thats a real good challenge to get back to Serie A!

nik besagno was the key to my success at QPR, my man city team and now my newcastle team. the kid is amazingly good.

i'm odds-on favourite to win the league this year, after 10 games i'm 2nd, 3 points behind arsenal (who i beat 4-0 at their place :D), 1st in my euro champions cup group (sporting cp, wisla and real madrid in my group, beaten them all so far. woop!)

I created myself before on the editor. I endend up being a world class central midfielder who due to ridicuus hidden loyalty stats and STFC being a favorite club was being picked for England ahead of Lampard whilst in League 1.

I turned it off and started a new game as Swindon, £250k transfer budget and a threadbare squad - surely this is going to be a doddle, I thought to myself.

So off I went with £250k in used £20's in various briefcases, pockets and other orifices, on a worldwide jaunt to scout some quality players which will lead to me pissing all over League One.

Feeling confident after a decent pre-season, I went into my first game away at Chesterfield. A disappointing nil-nil draw was followed by a 2-2 draw at Swansea, consecutive 1-1 draws against Tranmere and Bristol City respectively until I notched up my first win against Notts Co in the league cup, a cracking 1-0 victory with debutant Enoch Showunmi banging in his first goal for the club.

Riding on a wave of excitement after recording my first victory, I strolled into the next game away at Brentford feeling that we'd turned a corner. Sadly, there was a large wall around this corner and we recorded our second no score draw of the season, not a shoddy result at a place like Brentford I convinced myself.

However, worse was to come when we succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat against Rotherham, both goals coming from free-kicks. After giving the lads a bollocking, they proceeded to pick up our first league win of the season away at Huddersfield, the solitary goal coming in the 65th minute from none other than The Peaconator. Hoorah! Surely this momentous victory heralds the beginning of a new era?

The following Saturday we faced a tough away match at Colchester United, a side littered with former Town players - we went up against Tony Thorpe, Jamie Cureton, Mark Yeates and Kevin Watson. After going 1-0 up on the stroke of half-time thanks to Christian Roberts, I felt confident and believed that we'd truly started to show what we're capable of and I told the lads to not get complacent. Ten minutes into the second half and former town player Kevin Watson scored his 50th career league goal with a free-kick from 30 yards, leaving the young Filipe Leao stranded and hopeless. The game finished 1-1, our sixth draw of the season.

Somehow hovering above the relegation places despite an appalling start to the season, a home encounter against the Franchise was next up. A dreadful start left us 2-0 down inside of 24 minutes, with Enoch Showunmi bagging a consolation goal midway through the second half.

Four days later came a chance to have a break from the league, an away trip to Burnley in the League Cup 2nd round. Holding onto a 0-0 scoreline after 90 minutes took the game to extra time where we eventually lost 1-0.

Gus Poyet and Dennis Wise are both out injured for four and two months respectively, Wise managing only one appearance whilst Poyet made five. Roberts is my top goalscorer so far with three goals, Showunmi and Peacock are joint second with a whopping three goals and Nathan Jarman is the only other goalscorer in the squad with one goal to his name.

Overall my managerial record so far is P11, W2, D6, L3. Not too shoddy, but I'm 20th in the table after 9 games with no real signs of getting out of it.

I might just give up and go back to my Liverpool game...

you always start off slow as Swindon, you watch you'll suddenly go on a 20 game unbeaten run soon....then hit self destruct in about late March

After our visit to Burnley in the League Cup and the subsequent loss, normal service resumed with a home encounter against relegation threatened Port Vale. Making six changes to the team that lost 1-0 AET to Burnley the previous Wednesday, we opened the scoring on 18 minutes through Christian Roberts, who later scored his second and our third goal on 71 minutes after George Pilkington put the ball into his own net on 65 minutes. However, a miserly 3,272 people witnessed our biggest win of the season.

Three days later came another home encounter against top of the league Barnsley, making only the one change – Umanzor in for Nicholas – we were anticipating a tough match. However, we took the game to Barnsley and were 1-0 up through Christian Roberts after 5 minutes and 2-0 up after 36 minutes thanks to loanee Enoch Showunmi, conceding a goal 5 minutes later we went in at half-time with a 2-1 lead. The defence prepared themselves for an expected onslaught from Barnsley, which never came and the game was put beyond doubt when Sean O’Hanlon scored his first goal of the season on 69 minutes.

Having scored 6 goals in 2 consecutive home games, a visit to Southend followed. Fielding an unchanged lineup we notched a 0-0 draw in an uneventful but evenly matched encounter. Whilst on international duty with Slovenia in the week that followed, explosive defender Branko Ilic picked up an injury which forced him out for 3 weeks.

The following week we faced bottom of the league Walsall, Ifil coming in place of the injured Ilic. An early injury for Walsall meant Grant Smith was thrown into the foray, but his fantastic goalscoring ability wasn’t enough to stop us recording a 3-1 victory thanks to a strike from Christian Roberts and a brace from Whalley. Walsall scored a consolation goal late on through Ifil’s mistake.

Next up was a visit to fierce rivals Gillingham, where Gurney replaced the error-prone Ifil. A disastrous start led to Pouton scoring in the first minute with the Gills’ second coming on 39 minutes. Midway through the first half, Shakes was dismissed for his second yellow. Despite being 2-0 down at half-time, the boys went out with fire in their bellies and Peacock scored after 74 minutes followed by the dismissal of Brent Sancho for Gillingham on 79 minutes. A tense finish ensued but sadly our unbeaten run had come to an end.

Another poor start at Bradford the following week meant we were 1-0 down in the first two minutes, with youngster Ashley Parillon making his league debut in place of the suspended Shakes. Showunmi drew us level on 31 minutes, but neither side was able to break the deadlock and the game finished as a 1-1 draw.

The Vans Trophy 1st Round was up next, with a home game against Peterborough. Making 9 changes to the team which faced Bradford, the Town went through after a 1-0 win, the solitary goal being scored by Portugese striker Alexandré Mendes.

An injury to Enoch Showunmi ruled him out for the following league game against Doncaster, with Peacock replacing the injured Showunmi in the same line-up that faced Bradford in the previous league. However, we once again found ourselves 1-0 down after the wonderfully named Jermaine McSporran netted for Doncaster after 37 minutes, Roberts drawing us level on the stroke of half-time. An uninspiring encounter finished 1-1, our second successive score draw in the League.

A home game against newly promoted relegation battlers Scunthorpe started well with Roberts notching up his 9th league goal of the season after only 2 minutes, Peacock scoring the second after 84 minutes. This victory put us into 9th place in the league, our highest position all season.

The FA Cup 1st Round was up next, a visit from League 2 Shrewsbury on the cards. An easy 3-0 victory was wrapped up after three goals from Gurney, Brown and Peacock in the first 24 minutes booking us a place in the second round and a visit from either Yeovil or Rushden in the 2nd round. The most remarkable result of the round was Franchise’ 11-0 victory over minnows Wroxham.

Riding high on the crest of two emphatic victories, an away trip to Yeovil was next up. The return of both Ilic and Showunmi from injury providing another boost, both coming straight back into the side replacing Gurney and Peacock respectively. However, the change of personnel wasn’t effective and we lost 1-0 after a disappointing performance.

So, the Town lie in midtable after 18 games only 6 points off the play-offs. Jarman and Pook are both out on loan to Torquay, where Jarman has scored 3 goals in 3 games and Pook has performed admirably. Jutkiewicz and Mendes have received U19 call-ups for Poland and Portugal respectively whist Leao got an U21 call-up for Portugal.

Have been trying to sign Nik Besagno for the last two seasons. First time he was with an American team and they accepted the offer and he accepted the trms of the contract. But he was refused a work permit.

End of the season he was released, so I offered terms again, he accepted and again he didnt get a work permit. Now, a few months on, he has decided to retire! He is only 19, for christs sake. :x

After my disaster first 6 games in the Championship I faced Oxford looking for my first win of the season, thankfully it came and kick-started a remarkable fun of form, with Dong scoring 25 and the suprising though not unwelcome form of Andy Caton saw him bag between 15-20 goals.

Anyhow, won the play-offs and now look forward to keeping the Town in the Premieship.

Managed to creep into the last (Championship) playoff place on the last day of the season, for the second time in my three year reign (first time being in League 1), by beating Fulham. In a strange twist of fate, Fulham who finished 4th were the team I had to play in the playoffs semis.

1st leg, managed to get a 3-1 home win despite being 1-1 with all to play for at half time. 2nd leg Fulham's last minute winner wasn't enough as the match finished 3-2 and Swindon were through to the final winning 5-4 on aggregate.

Having got this far I was somewhat put out at the prospect of having to play West Brom, who had comprehensively beaten me (6-0) in the penultimate game of the season. When Nathan Ellington scored on 31 minutes, I couldnt see anyway back we were being beaten to every 50-50, nothing going our way. On the stroke of half time Piotr Wisniewski gave us a lifeline with a typical placed finish having beaten the offside trap. End of 90 minutes 1-1.

Extra time. West Brom start the better side and have a goal disallowed for offside. Swindon striker Tomislav Spicak starting only his third game for the club is then fouled in the box, penalty! Up steps Wisniewski for his second. West Brom can't get back into it and in the last 10 minutes and Swindon secured their place in the top flight. 8)

The County Ground certainly was a good place to be this season, Swindon scoring more goals than any other team while using an attractive, attacking 4-3-3 formation. Piotr Wisniewski was the star man, scoring 36 goals in 41 league starts, not bad for 18k. Unfortunately the defence wasn't quite as impressive and leaked 60 goals, a figure that would have had me rooted in the bottom half if it weren't for Piotr's goals.

Can't see me lasting too long in the premiership with the current crop of players. The likes of Henry will tear Andy Nicholas and Rob Clare apart, so some work is needed. Any cheap tips gratefully received.

Just got back into this game and i am currently Yeading FC in the Conference South.....Top of the league mind, by about 5 points i think....and im still in all cup competitions! But then again its only like November 2005 that im currently in....

You will certainly need to strengthen your defence. An attacking 4-3-3 tactic will get you murdered in the premiership. You may want to consider a counter-attacking 4-5-1 (with 2 DM screening the back 4, two wide men and a M/AM C).

i can't be arsed to write a long post like i have been doing, so brief summary

squeezed into 6th place on the last day of the season thanks to a 3-2 victory over bournemouth, a late winner coming from roberts.

played donny rovers in the semi-finals, 4-1 up at home in 1st leg, 1-3 in the 2nd leg so went through 5-4 on agg. lost 2-1 to brentford in the final.

signed ndah for £2k in january, he scored 10 goals in 17 starts and got 9 assists in the process. legend.

my central-defensive pairing refuse to sign a new contract, so both could leave. want to keep seano but not bothered about ilic.

Ooh I might have a game of this in a minute. I've got Swindon up to the Prem, only played one game but clawed back a point in the last 10minutes from 2-nil down to Liverpool - tipped to win the Prem.

I might go on a bit of a search for talent.

second season..bought Mr C.Roberts 17 goals and a few other including midfield dinamo Paul Mclaren 6k..just finished after leading league for 10 games..struggled in my last 6 games and dropped to 3rd place..and lost in playoff semi's to cardiff (5-0 on agg) which was a little depressing  :(..top scorer was Damian Spencer with 22 goals..had bouazza for two loan spells and he got 11 goals in 16 apps

In my first season in the Prem I'm 4th with 2 games to go, equal on points with Spurs who are a place below me. I was on blistering form up until late November, when things started to go horribly wrong. My form striker was injured for a couple of months, as were two more first team strikers. After 5 games without a win I changed my tactics slightly and started to pick up form, but now my form is as inconsistent as a King managed Swindon.

With no transfer budget for next season (Willie Carson said no transfer budget when I signed a new contract) I'm on a quest to find my golden tactic and sign some decent freebies.

Whits, where can i get that skin? I like the fancy swindon bit at the top

Currently about to start my second season with Yeading FC, in the Conference. Had a pretty average pre-season....won a couple and lost a couple....should do ok with the team i have assembled though.

Does anyone else find that at the end of a season when aload of players have been released from their clubs, that you cant help but sign some of them even though you dont neceserily need them? Or is that just me..... 8)

Managed to sign up Dennis Wise too  :D and i dont need him! As i already have about 3-4 other defensive mids....ah well, he's ace!

I finished 5th in the end, but it's probably for the best. Bought in loads of players including Crouch, who I hope can partner Youla up front nicely.

An unexpected bonus was getting a transfer budget, so I'm looking to buy a central defender and I think I should be good to qualify for Europe again.

If so, what formation/tactics do you usually use? The tactics i use work for the first season, then go to pot in the second...

I've found that you'll need to tinker with the tactics each season otherwise the AI computer susses you out somewhat.

Ah so the AI has become smart. Ok well i guess tinkering may work.
I've tried changing the tactics completely, but they still play crap....

How do you lot base your training schedules around the formation/tactics you play? I usually just increase the most important exercises. For  instance, i have aerobic and strength around medium/high, then shooting and set pieces, fairly low....

Also, have many of you downloaded any of the patches released? I havent  :?  could that be the reason why my team go to pot in the second season (After promotion)?

Yeah download the patches. Make sure you have a training schedule for every specific position and once you find a decent tactic, only adjust it slightly every season, not too much or it will go too wrong.

I think the AI's always been pretty 'smart'.

even if you do happen to find the best tactic ever, if you only adjust it slightly then after a few months your performances will go downhill as other managers know how your team will play.

the best bet is to continually review your tactics before each match considering the side you've put out, their team, home/away, etc. etc.

at home i tend to play more attacking, shorter passing, slightly more creative freedom, normal tackling. if i was away to a tough side i'd minimise creative freedom, put hard tackles in and close down quickly.

Having a good season so far, Peter Thompson from Linfield is quality. 25 in 32 games, but the cock broke a leg in pre season. Managed to sign Gary Breen and Steve Phillips for fuck all currently 1 st with 22 wins from 25 games 3rd round fofa cup and 3 rd rnd carling cup

The game is a lot quicker if you play it windowed and not full screen I have discovered. My computer wouldn't let me disable full screen, but you can force windowed mode another way if anyone is interested to know?

The concensus of opinion on the AI being smart is not really true. What tends to happen if you find a tactic is successful, and continue to use it without tweaking, the AI tends to become more defensive and more difficult to break down. It can depend on your reputation as well, which increases if you've been successful for a period of time.

There is no super tactic for this game.

Yeah how do you do that then?
In order for me to use the internet while on the game, i just press the windows button  8)  But i would prefer the whole screen to be windowed (especially as its quicker, like you say).

In the preferences menu (options>preferences) in football manager there is an option to disable 'full screen'. If that doesn't work then do this:

Right click on the fm2006 shortcut on your desktop and select properties. In the target box change it from this:

"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2006\fm.exe"

To this:

"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2006\fm.exe" --small_screen

Sorted. If you want to play full screen again, just do the reverse.

Finally found a tactic that suits my team. Currently playing a 4-1-2-2-1 with the striker as the target man. I have Wise in the holding midfield role for now and he's doing great. He scored 3 free kicks in consecutive matches! And two of them were form 30 yards but still did not make the top 3 goals of the month?  :?  (But did win player of the month - And i won manager of the month  8) )
Also currently top after about 8 games....no losses as of yet.

i started a new game as unemployed. got the northampton job around january with them languishing 23rd in div3. kirk scored loads for me before i sold him to reading for £1m after rejecting their initial £500k offer, replaced him with killen who did just as well and a snip at £28k. Dion Dublin and Doriva secured me a miraculous 4th place, just 2 points off automatic promotion but i lost to lincoln in the playoffs.

I'm in 2013/14 season, i'm heading for my forth consecutive premiership title. yet to win champions league, but finalist twice, beaten by Villa last year!

Average age of squad that won prem last year was 23, previous year was 22. I only have one player over 25 years old in my whole team.

Just sold my star midfielder, a 24 year old Brazilain called Tacio, to Chelsea for £29 million. I accepted a £35m bid on Star striker, Fernando Genro, and he turned them down as he likes Swindon and me so much!

He has won European golden boot twice.

My Club is £70m in profit and i have xfer kitty of £50m.

I have been offered pretty much every Job in Prem, Italy, Spain, Greece and Holland, which of course i have turned down. Although second time Real offered it was very hard.

I'll never leave the town as i have so many amazing youngsters, and want to see them progress. In my reserve squad i have a 20yr old striker who is first choice for england ahead of Rooney and Owen, he has scored 5 goals in his last 3 internationals. Oh and i have a 19yr old brazilian wonderkid Centre half who chelsea offered me £19m for, and is full brazil international.

Bit too much info, but i loves it.

Now sat with a nice healthy bank balance and no need to sell anybody else. Also in the Southern Final of LDV Vans Pot, but failed dismally in the FA and Carling Cups.

The only problems are three serious long term injuries to Jenks, Migz and most worryingly the Cock who is out for 10 months with damaged cruciate ligaments.

All this using TTF's MQ tactics and TUG Training, both downloadable from the FM2006 website.

agreed. downloading tactics and training regimes is borderline cheating in my opinion.

especially the tactics, easily the trickiest part of the game.

Explain exactly why you consider it cheating? In no way whatsoever are downloading tactics cheating IMO. Previous versions of the game were well known for having a super-tactic that would defeat the game engine with any team of any strength - not the case with FM2006. No one tactic out there suits all. For example, I tried the HQ version of this tactic with both Spurs and Liverpool and it sucks! The MQ version works great with Swindon.

I for one would love to be able to spend the time perfecting my own tactics, but I don't have the patience to sit on the computer for hours doing it, testing it and so on. The tactics I am using are formation templates, so they are designed to give a basic formation and playing system which you can adjust to meet the strengths and weaknesses of the players in your squad.

There is also a cheat training schedule for FM2006. I've never downloaded it and I believe it has been removed from the net. Certainly not available via the normal download channels now.

At the end of the day, its up to you how you choose to play the game. I've tried with my own tactics, with some success, but I've chosen to play it this way. Its not cheating, and if you wish to design your own tactics and training and get success, good for you.

it doesn't take hours and you don't have to sit for hours testing it. just pick a formation, set the team stuff on the sliders, then tweak the individual settings to suit your players and the opposition. not rocket science.

the whole point of football manager (i thought at least) was to be a football manager. this means deciding your own tactics and doing everything else a manager would do, not downloading tactics because you can't be arsed yourself.

obviously "its up to you how you play the game". but i wouldn't give much credit to someones achievements on there if they'd been using borrowed tactics. just take 5mins and get the team playing how you, as a manager, want them to - not the way that will probably win but you have barely any input in.

but if you're just not good enough, don't sweat. stick to the easy way, i'm sure you'll carry on winning.

It is a bit boring. the more you just download other peoples tactics and training and stuff the more you might as well just be watching someone who's better than you play the game. Maybe they should make a fm2006 the movie.

Finally decided to download the 6.0.3 patch! I saved it in the football manager folder....is that where its supposed to be saved? Or is there a specific place it should be saved to?

I developed a tactic for the second half of my 2nd season in the prem was all about retaining possession and playing slow tempo footy. Worked a charm and I was playing some liquid football at times, winning many games by a few goals. Went on an incredible run from 5th in the prem to top by the end of the season after an amazing winning streak and undefeated streak of nearly 30 games (including cup etc). Got to semis in UEFA and won the FA cup.

Problem is when your reputation goes up other teams play slow tempo too, so it cancels out your tactic. So I'm going to get back on the tactics for this season.
