Title: Townend Book Club Post by: Amir on Friday, October 14, 2005, 21:37:56 Maybe not suitable for a Friday night post, but some books I've recently read and what I thought of them......
http://www.bertrams.com/j/0007198299.jpg Anyone who is in anyway a fan of Bill Hicks, should in my opinion read this book. Written with a lot of contributions from people that new him, making it an interesting and inciteful biography that really shows alot of sides to the man's character and the way he lived his life. http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/catalog/images/0099455056.jpg A real life insight into American traders in the far east, based on a guy who traded with the likes of Nick Leeson before his downfall. Interesting to a point, although I didn't feel it told you enough and the style of writing was a little basic. Worth a read. http://shakti.canalblog.com/Siddhartha.Hesse.JPG A brilliant story involving eastern mysticism, following Siddharta on his path to enlightenment. Beautifully written, and a very relaxing and thought provoking tale. http://bilder.buecher.de/produkte/000000691/000000691922n.jpg I've actually just re-read this, something I never normally do. An horrific tale from the trenches of the First World War, a period of time we don't really hear much about anymore now that it is as good as out of living memory. A very disturbing book in places, it does make you wonder about the human spirit, and the instinct for survival. There are a few little things that annoy me about book when it is linking up the story, though apart from that it is an almost perfect novel. Anyone else read anything lately that they'd care to share? Sonic, did you read The Plague in the end? A mate's just lent it to me. Title: Townend Book Club Post by: DV on Friday, October 14, 2005, 21:51:44 Just getting back into the reading thing, find it easier to get to sleep afterwards on a week night. As my parents have just been on holiday someone leant them the whole Dan Brown set, currently I am just getting into Angels and Demons 8)

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0316726729.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Was a good read, but then i am a very big fan of the Chili's, so may not appeal to all tastes.... Title: Townend Book Club Post by: sonicyouth on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:01:49 I never did finish The Plague, I will do one day though.
don't find the time to read much lately but I'm reading a book called Screening Scotland at the minute. It's about Scottish cinema and I can assure you it's enthralling :? So far we've watched Local Hero, Trainspotting, Young Adam and I Know Where I'm Going. Hotel Rwanda is superb, I saw it a few weeks ago and posted about it and no fucker cared. It's absolutely incredible, you'll love it. We'll be studying La Haine next year in film as well by the way 8) Title: Townend Book Club Post by: STFC Village on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:17:13 Quote from: "sonicyouth" yes but I didn't have to read it, I choose to buy it and read it so I can be nerdy and impress the girls. Saw a little bit of it when it was on BBC a while back, but was too distracted to pay proper attention. Ordered it because a friend recommended it.
Title: Townend Book Club Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:21:30 In my opinion the best Herman Hesse book is the Glass Bead Game.....
Title: Townend Book Club Post by: sonicyouth on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:21:40 I don't know much about it but being a Ken Loach film I guess it's safe to assume it will be a 'hard-hitting drama'. I'm led to believe the accents are bordering on indecipherable as well...
Young Adam is quite a good film as well, slightly disturbing but very moody and atmospheric. Title: Townend Book Club Post by: yeo on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:23:15 Im reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk
Im only about 10 pages in so cant revue it as yet. Title: Townend Book Club Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, October 14, 2005, 22:25:14 I've been to a couple of lectures given by KL in Swindon..these were at the Town Hall .
Think history will show him to be a great film director. If commercially a failure. I don't remember it being that hard to understand, but then I've been up there a fair few times so you get to know a bit of slang and get used to the accent. Will look it up, Reg. Cheers. Title: Townend Book Club Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, October 14, 2005, 23:09:56 Not something I could claim to have read recently, but I did revisit some of the oeuvre of Flann O'Brien (Myles Na Gopaleen) a few weeks ago.
IMO his An Béal Bocht is the finest book translated into the English language. Title: Townend Book Club Post by: Sade on Saturday, October 15, 2005, 07:54:49 I have not read a whole book since primary school  read magazines though but mostly look at the pictures(and I can read).
