Post by: larwood on Thursday, September 29, 2005, 08:51:22
Can't wait for this,it starts next week, wednesday october 6th.Its the convict losers :)  versus a world 11,first  there are three one dayers and then a six day test match. All the games are on sky, and the odis start at a reasonable 5a.m,perfect training for Englands winter tours in pakistan and india, which will start at the same time :) .I love watching cricket in the winter time :) .

I agree. When I was younger there was something wrong about taking a week off work and lying in bed at 9am with a big fat skunker watching the cricket while the rest of the world were at work or scraping ice off their cars. Quality!

Should be brilliant! Flintoff owning the Aussie batsmen once again, KP owning the bowlers.....oh yeah, and Steve Harmison 8)

Who else is in the World XI?

Captain-S.Pollock ; V.Sehwag ; R.Dravid ; J.Kallis ; C.Gayle ; B.Lara ; K.Sangakkara ; S.Afridi ; S.Akhtar ; M.Ntini ; Murali ; D.Vettori.
Test squad
Captain-G.Smith ; V.Sehwag ; R.Dravid ; B.Lara ; Inzamam ; J.Kallis ; S.Pollock ; M.Boucher ; S.Akhtar ; Murali ; D.Vettori.

I'll say happy birthday in advance, as i'm off to Canada on Monday, so probably won't get on the forum much for a couple of weeks

Obviously i was the only fool who bothered with the hugely disappointing odi's in this series :-))( .In fact i'd go so far to say that it was embarrassing and just showed how important it is to be a team and not just a collection of talented individuals. The players in the R.O.W side in both squads are on 80 grand,so Lara has so far [by my calculations]  made 40 grand for 5 catches and no runs :x .Fantastic.

you cant expect a team of "stars" to gel instantly though. if it was the world 11 against England they would have probably got stuffed too

Title: ICC super series
Post by: DMR on Monday, October 10, 2005, 14:21:49
You don't really need to gel in cricket though. You can either bat/bowl or you can't.

Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Monday, October 10, 2005, 14:24:35
true. but Freddie was saying that each indvidual has their own role to play in their respective teams and on this occasion nobody quite knows what their role is. i think Pollock just told them to turn up and bat and bowl tbh.

Correct. That was probably the World's major problem- no natural captain.

Don't agree with that Rich, the convicts ,much as it hurts me to admit, are a good one day side,i don't think we would beat a world eleven with as much ease as the aussies did.
It pissed me off that they were saying 'the australians are back',but the fact is they lost the ashes not the one day series against us.The six day test match might be of  more interest.I hope so because so far the whole concept has shown itself to be pointless.

thats true larwood. i think the world 11 will piss on the aussies over 6 days if im honest

Hope your right! It should be entertaining but then i thought the odi's would be :( .I can't wait to see if Inzy and kallis can run each other out :) .

I watched bits of all three one-dayers. Usually the first innings after a night out and then catching the very end of the game.

The World XI's fielding was atrocious.

so was the batting and bowling tbh

Got up at 5.15 a.m :) ,to watch the test match,in time for the Gilly and Hayden show :-))( .But worth it to see Inzy throwing himself around on the boundry  :)   .Good old Inzamam, brilliant batsman but the physique of Big Daddy :) ,he is a real inspiration to all us,ahem, big boned people.

the aussies think they are on top but the world 11 have a formidable batting line-up and i think they will score 400 plus tbh. i also think the aussies will only get something like 390 all out

Looks like Aussies are on the verge of winning the 1st test then

Freddy and Harmo have done us proud though :beers:

Yes,they both bowled well, and pleasing to see Fred do it in aussie conditions.
Ultimately though it was a utter waste of time, money and effort :( .I think losing the toss in all 4 games didn't help and also the sydney wicket was a spinning one,so it was never going to last for 6 days and was hard to bat on when warne and mcgill are playing against you.Plus the batsmen are all out of form at the moment, really the icc should have picked some more English players,i.e Struss or Vaughan.

Anyway the only thing it confirmed is that the convicts are a great team, which i think we already knew :-))( .Also the use of the third umpire for lbw and debated catches didn't work for me,it took too long and if its introduced the umpires will have to refer all the decisions they make, just in case thay are wrong, thus turning them into glorifiyed jumper and hat hangers.

Have to disagree with that its a waste of time, effort and money. I quite enjoy seeing most of the Worlds best players of the current era all in one team. And although they have been poor so far, I do believe they will improve for the next test, so may well see the next 2 games being closer.....although I still expect to see Aussies win :x

Agree with the inclusion of at least Vaughan....with England being the 2nd best test side now, they should have more than 2 players in the side.

With the umpiring stuff, I thought that they could refer debated catches already ie if the catcher had taken it "on the half volley or not". I think there would still be a need for umpires though, otherwise bowlers would be shouting "Howzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!!!!!!" at the 3rd umpire in the pavilion :D

Its finished now Village,it was only the one test match.Which is a shame because i'm sure the ROW would have improved.I enjoyed the idea of seeing the best players in the world in one team too, but i was disappointed in the way they played in the series, sadly i think some of them were treating it like a holiday and didn't play as well as they would for their countries, fair enough i suppose.

Surely after our glorious summer,we are now the best team in the world :)

I agree, we are the best test side, i was meaning World Rankings, which are clearly wrong

that was a pretty embarrasing series though. I think the players just weren't putting in the effort really. im surprised flintoff harmison and pietersen took part after a hard ashes series. Australia deservedly won.

also, england are definitely the best test side in the world. if we win our winter tour we will go top i think.

1) No. Australia have beaten everyone time and time again for 10 years. We've had a good 18 months.

2) I'm not sure whether you're right, but I'd be happy with a draw in Pakistan with (S) Jones

i think the aussies are undisputed best. i hate to say it but its true. they have lost 1 series so that doesn't make them the 2nd best just because we beat them does it. i do think England are by far and away the 2nd best side in the world though
