Title: Untrue Truths and urban myths
Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 19, 2025, 12:38:28
At various points in my life hey're are many things that I've thought I've known which turn out to be bollocks.

Some examples

1. The Union Jack is for sea, the Union flag for land. Turns out they are interchangeable and were used so by the admiralty. "Jack" just referred to something that is smaller than usual. Flagstaff came late.

2. Captain pugwash didn't have characters called seamen stains and Rodger the cabin boy.

3. The red in a properly cooked steak (rare/medium rare) isn't blood, it's myglobin

Good examples. Myoglobin and haemoglobin are components of blood so that last one is probably partially true. The rumour that Maryln Manson had removed to perform self pleasuring was widespread but I expect a myth!

As I understood it myglobin is muddle protein and shouldn't be in blood!

It is there, but generally in very small quantities with most residing inside muscle. Perhaps the cooking process releases a lot more as it does in rhabdomyolysis when people over-exercise and have mud brown urine and then renal failure.

Huckleberry Finn and Robin Hood were only fictional characters.

What I don't get about the flat earthers is (apart from the fact that they are blatantly wrong) if Earth really was flat, what would anyone have to gain by saying it wasn't?

I guess they haven’t heard that you can see the earth’s curvature from a height of approx 35,000 feet.

Aaaah, flat earth, one of my favorite subjects.

Most flat Earthers are highly religious. They tend to be Bible literalists, and refer to things like Isaiah 40:22, Genesis 1:6-8, Chronicles 16:30 and Revelation 7:1 to justify their bullshit belief. In other words, they’ve decided the Bible says the Earth is flat, and therefore it is regardless of the gamut of evidence to the contrary.

Those that aren’t highly religious are drawn towards literally any conspiracy theory. It’s a character flaw. They don’t care about evidence. They are people with low ability or low knowledge in a scientific field like physics who overestimate their own competence because they lack the very skills needed to recognize their own errors. It’s called the Dunning-Krueger effect.

They're fucking stupid, is what they are.

Wasn't Maths used to prove the earth was round* in about 3000BC?

*Near enough.

My cousin is a bit of a CT, but a 30s Google search usually disproves anything she posts on fb.

For example, last week was a picture of the Apollo 11 crew without their helmets on and a caption about 'when they were optional on the moon '.

A 10s Google gives the answer it was a training exercise and the full photo has cars in the background.

I tend to just ignore her, it's easier that way. I guess she can't help it.

Her husband is the same but I know he has the intelligence to look up and weigh the evidence (more things like chemtrails and anti Vax). I just find it hard to understand how his conclusions are reached. Maybe he think the same of me.

Ah well, such is life.

Eratosthenes was the first to actually demonstrate the earth is a globe around 200 BC (and measure its circumference relatively accurately, using sticks and shadows) and Aristotle argued for it about 100 years earlier. Pythagoras did so a couple of hundred years before Aristotle too.

So not quite 3000 BC, but it doesn’t really matter, it was a long bastard time ago.

I'm still not convinced 90% of flat earthers aren't just pretending for a laugh.

There’s that too. They definitely make up a proportion of those that say the earth is flat.

Also, I’ll just make the point that whenever a flat earther has tried to prove it’s flat, they’ve accidentally demonstrated its a globe.

My cousin was a CT and in very deep. To the extent he would create red flags and spread them on the internet he was very involved in the spreading of mistruths. He now has done a full turn around has been on BBC apologising to 7/7 victims and has his own podcast etc explaining exactly how these nutters works. Really interesting, unfortunately though it now means that he faces the wrath of the other side who insist he is not real and a plant by MI5 etc

Fucked up place i tell you

That works actually, although more so for those that create the conspiracy theories in the first place rather than those that believe them. Confidence tricksters sums them up quite well!
