I have never installed a VPN directly to a router but it should work, most smart tvs can run the VPN app from google play though, similar to the way a firestick does.

You used to be able to download chromecast & get google play that way. May still work.

Not sure normal routers from BT have the capability to put a VPN off, however you could get another router and plug that in, if you need the BT one.

Do you mean get a seperate router and plug into one of the ethernet ports on the BT one?

Yes pretty much, I do that with a mesh network.
