Title: Notts County v Swindon Town Match Day Thread
Post by: Ƭ̵̬̊: The Artist Formerly Known as CWIG on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, 18:16:22
I had a good record of us winning in match day threads I posted last season and just won our first this season, so I'm going again.

12:30 kick off.

Tranmere face Carlisle in another game where one of them have to drop points, so another big opportunity to gain ground.

After this game we would have played 11 games at home and 14 away which may become an advantage later on in the season.

That would of been Remeao Hutton as I recall.  :hmmm:

Who's performance dropped off and got his big move to Gillingham. :bye:

should be about 2 tomorrow in Nottingham, only below freezing in the very morning. I would say likely on but not a huge shock if it was called off.

I had a look at whether Meadow Lane has undersoil heating. During the summer they laid pipes, but they aren't connected to anything. So that's a no.

Could really do with this being off, Delaney and Sobowale have knocks so we have one fit centre back, as well as Smith having a broken face.

Holloway (jokingly) suggested playing Gunning in the presser.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see at least one of them in the starting XI.

Clarke hada sore groin too, that would be a big miss. Offy also struggling.

At least, according to Ollie. Maybe he's gone all mind games!

You would want Delaney to stick to Jatta, who is big and strong, even if he doesn’t have a first touch. Their new forward/left winger Josh Martin is a real livewire too. That’s before you get onto McGoldrick and Jodi Jones, who is now back from injury. Then there’s Dan Crowley pulling all the strings (who Ofoborh should stick to like glue). It’s a proper squad, playing good football. I’m surprised they aren’t walking the league with the players at their disposal.

If Delaney can’t start, you’d expect Clarke to drop into the back three with Kirkman and Wright, and Kilkenny to slot back into midfield.

Come on you reds!!

Pre match lack of pert buttocks jiggling around in tight orange hot pants in The Roebuck Inn.
Went to Hooters after the game last season, can't remember what I ordered but must have been ok.

Only Minturn remains of that matchday squad although Khan & Uwakwe are still nominally ours, but probably not for long if everyone gets their way.

Will give the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem pub a miss today.
Turns out that it might not even be the oldest pub in Nottingham let alone the country.
Still, anything with Ye Olde in it will guarantee that the tourists will keep coming.

Having a go at a slightly dry January this year.
The mindset probably needs changing but will give it a go.

The home game was one of the better performances under Kennedy and we were a little unlucky to come away with nothing.

Under Holloway we are a different kettle of fish entirely & should present a whole new can of worms for County today and I can't think of a cliché to save my life.

Ultra possession based passing teams can be relatively easy to play against at this level, but the opposing side needs to be very well organised with a specific gameplan.

One clean sheet away from home & 14 league games since the last one.
A tall order to keep County out today, but maybe we are due a successful defence of the onion bag.

If we are struggling with knocks then so must they be, after what is this today, the 5th game in 14 days?

A smash & grab daylight robbery of the relatively rich by Ian & his Merry Men would go down very well with the impoverished (football wise) Town fans watching today.

Although the majority in the away end & possibly also those in their warm or maybe chilly chateau's bear more of a resemblance to Friar Tuck these days, we can still bang out the tunes that would make Alan-a-Dale proud.
And much like the Hooters Girls we also look good in orange, if only from a distance.

Hopefully a content & safe getaway for the travellers before the weather arrives.

3-1 Notts County

Definitely on then we think? Team could be a bit scrapped together at the back.

I think we'll lose reasonably heavily today. I don't think that's a disaster based on how the Christmas period has gone otherwise.

Strange as we have 3 strikers on the pitch, but as said previously, really unsure how we break down Notts County today with that line-up. Hope I’m proven wrong but the three up top tactic has not worked for us when tried this season

I agree, but TBH we have picked up more points than I expected over the Xmas period, nobody at all really expects us to win today so theres not really any pressure on them today.

I guess some of them can probably manage 20 minutes, but not 90, is the thinking. If we're still in the game at 70 minutes, maybe Clarke comes on. If the game is dead, probably not.

Very much so its a free hit, but, County are by no means unbeatable, its just we rarely win away there often with just 2 wins there in the last 9 meetings.

I do think thats a bit unfair, hes not useless, hes just not a good all round keeper, hes still better than Kovar for me but nowhere near good enough to be a 1st team keeper yet, he struggles jumping and claiming high balls.

Glatzel really a shadow of the player he was last season sadly.
Just does not suit our system at all

This unfortunately. Best for all if he gets a move in this window and we can replace with something else.

Notts have a different style of play (passing the ball) that will always make it look like they have more control. However we have been in a number of dangerous positions but have lacked the quality to make them count.

Exactly, we havent played badly we just dont have the quality they have. Its easy to blame Kirkman or Barden but we just literally arent at their level and McGoldrick is easily a division better in quality than any of our players.

I've seen far worse this season. I think we've defended relatively well (two obvious examples apart).

I don't think we've been too bad overall, Mcgoldrick running the show and is such a classy player. Without him, they haven't done much.

Definitely a goal in this for us.

Below par keeping and a silly mistake from Cotterill if he has genuinely tried to play that there instead of letting it get away, other than that it really is just coming up against a better side.

Sadly at least one of Tranmere or Carlisle will likely gain ground on us today.

Might be better Carlisle winning as with the money they're spending they'll probably end up pulling themselves out of this anyway, whereas Tranmere appear to be in near freefall.

Second best start to finish.
Not because the tactics were wrong, not because the formation was wrong, not because we made individual mistakes, not because our players were rubbish, not because we played badly.

Notts County were simply a level above us man for man all over the pitch.

Not something we need to dwell on, not something we need to over analyse & pick the bones out of.

Hold our hands up - accept we couldn’t compete with Notts County & move on. Notts were Significantly better than Wimbledon (who are above Notts) Grimsby (level on points before todays game) & Bromley

Do broadly agree, and think it was probably enforced, but going away from three midfielders two strikers which has worked over the last few weeks wasn't ideal.

Do broadly agree, and think it was probably enforced, but going away from three midfielders two strikers which has worked over the last few weeks wasn't ideal.

But yes, forget that game, onto Crewe.

Yeah, fair point.
Not sure it would have made much of a difference overall though

With a depleted(whether necessary or not I don't know) side, against a team that I think are the best in this division, that's not disastrous. Also, those 2 saves will do Bycroft good. Drinan MOM and Wright once again solid. Can't understand the starting formation though

The recent resurgence has been characterised by bite in midfield and winning the physical battle. The set up and personnel seemed to take that away from us today - but if Clarke was ten years younger, and Ofoborh and Smith weren’t injured (assuming Ofoborh wasn’t fully fit - because if he was, he has to play) perhaps that would have been different. I wasn’t expecting a result today, but it was a shame we didn’t really compete.

Actions for this week: a new (experienced, calm, dominating) keeper, some pace and some width. Lose some of the flab from the squad.

All of this. Realistically we’re capable of being a mid-table side with the current squad, but not a side that rocks up to promotion contenders with players missing and can take something from it. Dust ourselves off and move on.

They were plain better than us and worthy of a routine win. McGoldrick could have had 4.

Shows how reliant we are on Smith too. The rest of the forward line is utter wank

Holloway:
- Learned how goot Notyts Co were. And how practice makes perfect
- We did stop them at times. We broke them down. We didn't have the edge up top
- Not like Holloway's forwards. Probably due to them dominating possession
- McGoldrick could have graced 2 or more levels above
- We did some things really well, but didn't capitalise on it
- Smith wanted to play. Holloway didnt feel it was right. Will get him on the grass to train
- We didnt do anything in the final 1/3
- Expected us to counter attack
- Those 'might ofs' cost us today
- Lots of is was 'OK'. Lots was right. But once we won it, we weren't sharp enough
- A bit disappointing
- Barden got 'kicked in the face'. Wasn't concussion. So doesn't have to be out for 2 weeks
- Well done to Notts Co. One day we might be saying that about Holloway's team
- Glad to get this period out of the way. But this game spoiled it a bit
- Not that disappointed. We move on
- We were playing like we had Smith. We needed to play out a bit more
- Changed it from a 5 to a 4 in the second half. Should ghave started that way, but didn't, as they didn't have chance to practice it in training
- If we had McGoldrick, then we could have scored a couple today
- He's a Notts Co fan? Maybe we should roll out Charlie Austin (said in jest)
- Almost everything we tried didn't come off
- More than happy with the period we've had. Move on.

outclassed today .  If we continue to grind out decent results against other less able sides, a 20th place finish is realistic . Lots of teams with games in hand though.

Have played two more away than at home, so my guess is 18th which would be above the Clem Line.

8 points from the 5 games is an ok return.

Losing at Notts County isn’t a disaster, but today shows how much we miss Smith up front.

Holloway has done a lot right in the last few weeks, today he got it wrong. I’m sure he will learn from it & hopefully not make the same mistake again.

3 away games in 10 days, still 640 of us for a 12:30 game 3 hours away on the TV.

Tranmere have been in freefall lately so no and Carlisle are spending money and we probably can't rely on them being the same team come Feb 1st.

Accrington are closer to us than Colchester who would feasibly get dragged in to it, although their fans still think they're nailed on for the play offs.

Agree it's not disastrous as we've had a decent run, but it puts us exactly where we were when Holloway took over,22nd 4 points off the drop.
To be honest, I thought he had learned that 3 up top doesn't work for us, but apparently not

That’s good, isnt it?

I mean it takes Harrogate, Accrington & Tranmere above us on one hand which isn’t good.

It stops Carlisle (6pta behind) gaining on us & stops Colchester (3pts ahead) & Barrpw (4pts ahead) getting any further away. Which on the other hand is ok.

Much of a muchness probably. Doesn’t help that some teams have one, two or even 3 games in hand on us. Impossible to know if they’ll pick up points there & which teams might hit form & pull away versus which team might drop like a stone & getting dragged into it

That three game run at the end of January looks to be massively important. Newport (a) Tranmere (h) Carlisle (a)

I think that showed Notts County are another level above the teams we have picked up points against recently like Wimbledon, Grimsby and Bromley.

The pressing and moving the ball forward quickly didn't work against a team who could keep working the possession and finding the gaps.

We need to find other ways to win than a wind assisted, pressure the opposition and get a 2 or 3 goal lead to hang onto. We don't keep clean sheets to sneak 1-0 wins so we need other ways.

The last few games are encouraging in that we can compete and pick up points against most in the division with a fully fit team.

Crewe (H) - 7th
Barrow (H) - 15th (4pts ahead - 4th worst away record)
Newport (A) - 18th (2pts ahead)
Tranmere (H) - 20th (1 pt ahead - worst away record)
Carlisle (A) - 24th (6pts behind - 2nd worst home record)
Vale (H) - 3rd
Harrogate (A) - 21st (1 pt ahead - 3rd worst home record)

The next 7 games are absolutely vital for our season.

Not sure I fully agree, the difference that not having Harry Smith and playing a man short in midfield made also didn’t help today.

The one thing I would agree is that McGoldrick is clearly better than anyone we’ve played against in those games.

Havent read back.

Im meh about today.

We did better than at Bradford i suppose.

Second goal looked offside but they missed a bucketful of chances and hit the bar, so not bothered by that.

Outplayed by a better side full stop.

Drinans goes in and it could be different but even then i still dont think we would of got anything toady.

The mini run ends, so on to the next game!

Umbongo had a poor one...always doing the wrong thing and even got in the way of Cox.

Tshimanga is not good enough for the EFL. Well, certainly not for a team down the bottom anyway.

If he’s not falling over, he’s miscontrolling the ball. He’s no threat in the air, is often half a yard short of winning a 50/50 and for me really feels like we are playing with 10 sometimes.

I can’t mock his work rate, and when he is presented with an opportunity he might be capable of sticking it away, but these situations  are becoming rarer and rarer. I can only assume he plays so much because otherwise we have to pay Pboro more?

All this game time he gets, id rather was invested in Glatzel to get him a proper run going. Yes Glatzel has been shite, but he’s proven he can do it at this level and he’s also our ‘asset’  it doesn’t help when he’s constantly in and out the side.

Ideal solution is to send Tshimanga back and get a fast, strong striker who can battle for all these Smith flick ons.

The thing that drives me mad with Tshimanga is when he stands up strong & battles for the ball, like he did vs Grimsby & Col U he looks so dangerous.
Why the hell his default style of play is to fall over whenever the ball comes near him I don't know.

He's not won a single freekick & has cost us all forward momentum time & again doing it. Which, indeed has meant it's felt like we're down to 10 whenever he's on the pitch.

Yes Glatzel is badly out of form but even yesterday his battling in the first half alongside Drinan kept them pinned back the majority of the time, despite the 2 goals. The subs at half time just opened up space for Notts & they had an easy time of the 2nd half.
Not sure Tshimanga going off instead of Glatzel would have made a difference as the change to 4-4-2 was the big mistake but at least Drinan & Glatzel had been chasing everything down.

Apart from the free kick vs Colchester, for the first goal (although, I get your point…). When he decides to try and hold up play, he’s not bad at it at all, he just doesn’t do it enough.
