Not a surprise. Inspite of not winning anything trophy wise, I believe Southgate bought the England set up and team to within a whisker of where we want to be. The right man at the right time.

Thank you Gareth.

The king is dead, long live the, errrr, new King.

Who is going to be anointed into the most toxic job in international football? Place your bets.

There’s no English manager that’s up to much. Christ, if Potter and Howe are front runners we’re in the shit.

This, for all the talk of Klopp, Tuchal, Frank or Poch it would be a fucking soap opera in the media and then in the country stirred up by them!

There’s no English manager that’s up to much. Christ, if Potter and Howe are front runners we’re in the shit.

Herein lies the new problem, we seem to have sorted the system to develop world clash English players, less so world class English managers....

A fraud.

Muff went up via cheating the wage cap in plain sight....got a massive fine.

Got all the riches again at Newcastle...not delivered IMO.

Agree with this, plus as his safety shield seems to be going at Newcastle he might feel its a suitable time to jump.

Thomas Frank would get my vote.

Absolutely no confidence that they will but it feels majorly important the FA get this next appointment right whoever they choose.

Klopp feels like Swindon and Payne or Kemp - you'd be mad not to ask, but there's a snowball's chance in hell of getting a yes.

The League Cup? International friendlies?

Probably not the best thing to speculate on, but considering some of those offences are said to be two decades ago and being investigate by British police, a person who's only been in the UK for nine years wouldn't seem to make a great deal of sense.

The FA have asked for permission to talk to a few managers at a time in the past anyway. So it doesn't typically mean the same as if a lower league club does it where they're pretty sure they want them.

Hadn’t thought of him. Good shout. Went to United with a great reputation, and although to say it didn’t work out is an understatement, the consensus seems to be that Jesus himself would have struggled to get a song out of that team.

Has to be Carsley for me. Won the Euros familiar with all the players minimum disruption. Let's go the Spain/ Argentina way, not done them much harm. Never got the clamour for club managers, totally different ball game. Potter,Howe or Lampard???? Please not. Wouldn't want Klopp either, personally

I am sad to see Southgate go but I'm glad it was his choice.
Despite golden generation players we won fuck all and would invariably lose to the first half decent team we played.
This group of players would beat any England team from 70 onwards.
What Southgate did was to make England likeable again. A fantastic front man who understood the political game. Also got the team as a team and not a collection of egos.
Maybe not the best tactician but overall I think he did an absolutely fantastic job. This really has been a purple patch under his leadership.
I hope those who criticize him are right and that all we need is to be a bit bolder. We're not far from winning a tournament.
On a separate note, this has to be the poorest quality tournament I can remember. Spain the standout team.
As for the next manager, Carsley for me as well, agree with adje.

Klopp was on allegedly 15M quid at Liverpool, whereas Southgate was on allegedly 5M for England, so I don't see any of the big names roughing it on a mere 100,000 quid a week.

Pay him pro rata for the number of games England pay, might get it down from the £15m to the £5m the Fa can afford, albeit saw some suggestion online that they would wait for Guardiola (can't see that).

Carsley apparently is more attacking in approach which is what everyone has been crying out for so could be a positive appointment, albeit waiting for the inevitably wailing about it not being a 'name'.

Managed not only the U21s but the U20s too. Steady progression. Would be a good look for coaches taking up the youth positions.

I think Southgate will move into a position to oversee development of the entire process. It might be worth it to still have him involved in some capacity and I think that the FA may even ask him for a name or two to recommend for the actual hot seat.

Let's not kid ourselves. Klopp is head and shoulders above Southgate. Transfer kitty or not he broke 100 points with a team consisting of Lovren,Origi,Milner,Henderson,Chamberlaine, Shaquiri

For the same reason you think fans are mad for wanting Southgate out as he has done well you would be mad not to think Klopp gets more out this England squad

Suggest there would be 6 or more European managers that would have achieved better results than  Southgate has with the squad of players England has at the moment.
Yes, England has been runners up in 2 European nations cups and World cup.

However, they didn't win and neither have they deserved to win.
The style of football is wrong for English players. There needs to be fast flowing and attacking football. Similar to how they play after going a goal down as they did against Spain.
Although Spain were the better team England could have easily have gone on and won if they threw caution to the wind in the last 10 minutes.

I’ve had a fair few debates on the playing style with people who were Pro and Against Southgate (for what it’s worth, I was somewhere in the middle, appreciative of what he did but critical of a lot of on the pitch work and thought it was the right time to go).

The thing that frustrates me when talking about needing to play a higher tempo, front foot style is that the usual rebuttal is such a binary “it’s not feasible to play that way for 90 minutes” like we’re insinuating that there’s no middle ground between what we are playing now and all out attack.

Of course there will be some who are insinuating that but I think 90% of us who are wanting this squad to play a higher tempo, front foot style aren’t stupidly suggesting going all out attack for 90 minutes. It makes having conversation about anything Southgate/England related so hard when everything is dragged 100% in either direction.

The truth is somewhere in the middle on both topics. Southgate wasn’t completely crap and wasn’t perfect, he did a good job taking us where he did but was right to move on. Just because we were crap in the past, doesn’t mean that we should cling to what we have when it’s clear the squad can have more extracted out of it than it currently is. Same with the playing style, we can very reasonably go more attacking without scrapping all defensive foundations and going silly with it.

True, but Southgate got us to a world cup semi final with a midfield of Trippier,Lingard,Dele Ali,Henderson and Ashley Young with back up from Dier and Delph.
I look forward to us winning the next two tournaments as it seems to be in many people's eyes(not necessarily on here)that it's Southgate's fault we didn't win the last 3

I am not sure some new Manager wins the tournament, Spain were very good.  However, I would be confident that a capable Manager could manage to get to the final with a little more attacking impetus than we managed in this tournament.  Southgate did a really good job in allowing the younger players to bleed into the squad and turned around a pretty dire team 8-10 years ago.  He has patently not managed to extract the best from the current squad though - our draw was not the strongest in terms of competition, and we were rarely the better team, relying on individual moments.  You can argue the players need to take some responsibility, but I'd argue the way we play simply has to be by design.  There are too many players going against their natural instincts.

A new Manager won't make us head and shoulders above the rest of the world, like Spain in 2010, because our overall squad is not miles ahead of any other of the good nations.  They should at least keep us in the reckoning, and hopefully a bit more enjoyable to watch.
