Title: Harrogate v Swindon MoM Thread
Post by: Nemo on Saturday, November 18, 2023, 16:54:18
We have reached the point where I'm quite pleased to have squeaked a point at Harrogate side without their best player.

Mahoney, Young, Kemp, Kokolo, maybe Minturn if you're being generous the contenders. Props to Brewitt, the first time one of our subs has improved us in a long time now.

Kemp for me. We're going to miss him something fierce.

Mahoney by a country mile, we would have conceded 4 with a lesser keeper like Brynn or Kovar.

Mahoney probably made the most obvious vital contributions.

Thought Kemp was a passenger personally.
Think Minturn did well considering where he’s at in his development. Think we also looked better with him in midfield!

Kokolo lots of endeavour and getting into good positions. A lot of crosses hitting his man (who had closed him down well tbf) you’d hope that - that is Kokolo unfit & not match sharp because it looks like we might have a decent player on our hands if that him at say 80%

Murph, it could have been 4 : 1 without him.

I'd been toying with the idea of ignoring Mahoney's match-drawing performance so that I could reward newcomer Kokolo who I thought looked promising.  But then MMs save from Odoh reminded me it might not even have been especially close.  The only fair choice.

Absolutely a clear and obvious winner here with Mahoney.

Honorable mention to young for that finish, and early attacking in general

Harsh on Brynn that! I liked him.

Brynn better than Kovar but Mahoney is a decent step up in shot stopping for me than Brynn.

The two one-on-one saves from Mahoney were the difference between a draw & a defeat.

A great goal from Young, but we didn’t look much of a threat outside of that.

Nobody else really stood out, but nobody else was really bad either

Mahoney for me. At least 3 top drawer saves.

I know its a personal opinion, but your man of the match choices remind me of the home games at the CG where the sponsors makes an obscure choice and the crowd respond with a vocal 'huh/what'.

Mahoney was vital. I actually thought Kokolo is looking a good option as an attacking LWB. Young scored a great goal, pretty patchy the remaining players imo.

Some disappointment intimated by others during the game.

We all know what he can do but I thought his energy and enthusiasm in getting a "foot in" was impressive, especially first half.

Clear Murphy. Followed by Khan, Minturn and Kinsella. Kokakola flattered to shockingly deceive. Hutton's worst game for ages. Kemp poor first half I thought but good second

If I'm honest, I tend not to vote for the player who I think will win our vote, which today was always going to be Mahoney. I'd rather make sure that the second/third best player gets a few votes rathe than the usual joke votes (hello Austin)

Fair enough Nemo, each to their own and variety seemingly is the spice of life, although personally I'd go for cumin.

Edit - I've opened myself up to potential punnage there!

We would have lost had it not been for 3-4 saves from M-M.

I like the look of Kokolo. He had a good games.

Minturn is a limited player, but did his job well.

Young had a good 1/2 half.

Hutton did what he always does.

Kemp had small flashes.

Kinsella had his best game.

The rest were ‘meh’

I thought Minturn had a good game, does what others don’t- tackle. Kept tight to his man and one fantastic interception/tackle in the 2nd half. As others, I like the look of Kokolo.

MM obviously gained us the point but some of his kicking/distribution was poor.

One thing’s for sure - no matter how results are going Flynn is sticking with this ‘system’.

God help us!

Suggest we should monitor and vote on who has had a bad performance... currently over the season this would clearly show Charlie Austin.

He has the lowest votes per game of any regular, by some distance. Until the last few weeks I might have argued this was just a lack of outstanding performances rather than consistently bad ones, but it's certainly not been what we'd hope for.

Austin was contributing the team early on. mostly assists and the odd goal, and defensive duties.

last few he's been right off it. not immune to fatigue, form and a lack of confidence.

unlike most, I don't think he's finished. But he does need rest and shouldn't be immune to being on the bench.

circumstances dictate otherwise though.

I think Charlie's definitely finished at League level.... Happy to be proved wrong...

This is where I'm at. He was contributing and then we've played him too much. It was never going to work.

That said he could be finished, but the flashes we saw at the start of this season don't really indicate that.

Agree. Something not right with him and Flynn today.
A few spotted it. Could just be one of those but Austin not anywhere near where he needs to be at this level.

Pitman was the same but tended to stay in the box more so wasn’t exerting so much energy!

Would rather have Austin with one leg than that wanker.

If you look at Austin’s history he hasn’t really been the same since he left QPR in 2016 - 8 years ago.

I think this is his last season.
Way off the pace now sadly. Remember that away second leg play off game at Charlton when we were down to 10. That was one of his best ever games for us leading the line, he was unplayable that night.
Happens to us all, age catches up.

It’s a shame. Don’t want the fans to get on the back of a club legend. Would love him to be a player coach and just on the bench for emergencies and 5-10 min cameos (for the rest of the season). But, we’d need more bodies before that could happen.

Club legend? 😂

Not for me. Far from it.

Only Sam Parkin has scored more goals for us this century and 26th on the all time list ahead of Coxy, Billy Paynter, Dave Bamber and JAF.

Not sure we will see the likes of a Chalky, Andy Rowland or Duncan Shearer getting to or close to the 100 club with how long good players stay these days.
