Title: Logging in to forum problem
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 07:38:45
I cannot log in to the forum unless I switch to ‘Block all cookies’. Doing that means I can’t then log in to any other website. It’s not just Safari it’s the same using Chrome. Coincidentally, it started only after the forum clock was altered.

Any suggestions?

Dunno, I always stay logged in. No issues here.

It appears that the site is coming up as "not secure connection" on some devices for whatever reason.

Try using the actual login page, rather than the quick link in the top corner

Whatever it is it only affects this site - which is weird. Same on my old iPad. I’ve deleted all website data and cookies to no avail. Even when I log in after blocking cookies the site logs me out very quickly.

There is an iPad software update available. Maybe that’ll cure it.

I still blame the clock!

Lining up with the change to the forum clock time, my first thought would be something to do with the security certificates time not matching up with system time, although in my limited experience that only tends to be an issue accessing through HTTPS. Maybe on a Mac that's the default?

(Disclaimer that I am just technical enough to be dangerous, rather than actually competent)

Overall I suspect the forum is starting to show it's age a little, seeing as the software is older than some of our younger posters now!

Sorted!

Click on Safari, scroll down to Experimental Features, scroll down to the final item RequestCallBack, click icon from grey to green. Hey presto!

Are there any 'younger posters' place seems to have morphed into a version of mumsnet for grumpy over 40 year old men (A demographic I tally with perfectly).

I’ll sort it, it’ll probably be as Nemo says or sessions.

Shall we sack this forum off and move to a subreddit?

r/thetownend for example

The ability to downvote a few posters would be heavily used, I suspect :D

:D Imagine a world where the average Jimmy post is downvoted to oblivion and automagically hidden... ah bliss.

Sounds like a great idea. Might allow a graceful end to thetownend.com depending on what effect it has.

I think so. Maybe.

I've started it. r/thetownend

I know this site isn't zero cost for you, either financially or time wise. Reddit already has all the functionality we need so hopefully a few others will come join us over there. There are literally 10s of us!

It's this new fangled website where people type in their opinion about a topic. Pretty groundbreaking stuff.
