Title: Swindon to Gatwick by train
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, 12:27:38
Good old Easyjet have just cancelled my flight back from Bristol to Kefalonia so now I have to fly back from Gatwick.

Anyone know the logistics i.e. change trains at Reading or into Paddington and go from there. Need to get to Gatwick for 10am on Easter Saturday.

I've done both ways and would avoid Paddington if you have a lot of luggage as it's a nightmare on the Tube. Change at Reading wnd although it's slow it's straight forward. Also have you looked into National Express to see if they have any coaches on Sunday morning.

National Express was astonishingly expensive compared to the train - virtually double.

You could hitch hike?

Just short of £60 for 2 on the train via Paddington, nearly £120 on the coach.

Doesn’t sound right to me, but you don’t argue with Dr. Google!

Easter Sunday is the 17th April innit? If so National Rail are only saying they can get you there for 10.45 (8.28 off Swindon) change at Reading. In brighter news its only 29.80 total for 2 people?

Yeah, but I’m going back - at the moment - on Saturday 16th.

Looking at the flights I’ve got a choice of cutting short my trip and going back from Bristol on Wednesday the 13th or returning via Gatwick, probably on Good Friday.

Aud - Easter Sat 06:19 from Swindon, change at Reading, gets you to LGW for 08:28. £40 Advance for 2 people (no refunds). Those will sell out; the standard fare is £91, so if you're fairly sure that's when you'll be going I'd buy those £40  Advances ASAP. Also a few trains on Good Friday pm at the same price £40.

I took this as an early thread for those traveling to Crawley. Anyone going through Portsmouth?

With the rail replacement between Didcot and Swindon I got the coach for £8 from Swindon to London Victoria. The price to the intermediate stop at Heathrow was £24! Airport premiums appear to generate revenue for coach companies.

Have you got a railcard? Most recoup their annual cost on the first or second ticket purchase.
