Title: QPR v Swindon Town - Official Match Day Thread
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, 05:58:04
Figured that by starting this thread I couldn't exactly be blamed for tarnishing our recent cup exploits.

I predict:
  - A cracking evening out for those going
  - A sore headed London Reds
  - A narrow 2-1 loss with Gladwin or Luongo scoring in the 87th minute.

Have fun

Hopefully a good entertaining game and possibly a repeat of a few years back when Ranger and Pritchard sent us through.

As long as we put in a good performance and don't get spanked I'll be happy. Gutted I can't go, Loftus Road is one of my favourite grounds

Decent game, wish I was going. Bloody work.

Free hit really.  Give a game to the newbies Jones and Norris, go out and enjoy. Would rather exit in 90 mins than mess about with ET and pens.

Unfortunately I see a 3-0 defeat in front of 9,750 with 1,156 Town fans there.

Give Norris and Jones a run to see how they settle in the side, doubt Doughty is eligable to play (could be wrong though).

QPR are likely to play a strong side according to their forum, Luongo fresh from a great game on Sunday against Lids and Gladwin fresh from being subject of the Loftus Road boo boys apparently where he is the new scapegoat.

That said theres always shocks in the first few rounds of the LC.

In the last 20 years we have been to QPR 8 times and won on 3 of those occassions, but we have lost the other 5 and two of those games finished 0-4.

I just hope its a great nights entertainment for the following Town faithful, hopefully with a shock result at the end of it.

Yep, and Jones to come in at the back.

Would like to see Norris for Obika, Smith for Rodgers and, possibly, BOO for Brophy too. Iandolo for Goddard at HT as well. A mild shuffling of the pack.

Pre match optimism surrounded by beer at Olympia.

Not too fussed about the result, but leaving with a sense that this team might have something about them would be good.

Always a good away day at QPR.
For some reason the 4-0 in 2001 springs to mind.
Sabin & Invincible couldn't trap a bag of cement that night.
Was on the way back to the tube station when the 4th one went in.

Whatever happened to the Benetton guy who used to own the club.
Described the ticket price rises as paying for "boutique" football.

Flavio Briatore, think dodgy practices final caught up with him....at one point the R's were supposed to be the wealthiest club in the world, with a consortium of Briatore, Lakhsmi Mittal and Bernie Ecclestone in charge.

I wonder if the new Duke of Westminster is a closet Town fan  :hmmm:

Picking up £9 billion at 25 isn't too bad.
Chester fans might have some hope at least.

Sadly, don't think that an unremarkable (to non supporters) league 1 football club would make it onto the Grosvenor family list of worthy philanthropic causes.

Many moons ago, I used to spend a lot of time in and around Chester. Based in Handbridge....as a walker the obvious routes were due south into empty space, trouble was it was only empty because it was mostly Grosvenor Estate, so no footpaths.

There was a bit of decent territory up around th Peckforton Hills otherwise off to the Clwyds, a bit of a trek by road, but Moel Fammau and Moel Arthur made it worth it.

Did Williams say what position the 2 new players would be hopefully Turnbull is one of them so Nathan can go to RB also another defensive midfielder to get Anton out the first 11, just need to add a striker before the window closes.

Pretty much..... Just one of those who wouldn't go while Di Canio was at the club, now won't go because of Power.  Always has an excuse why he won't attend and wants everybody else to know about it. When things don't go well actually enjoys it and throws the I told you so card, not really what you would really call a Town Fan.

A lot more positive for this season after watching that. Great battling performance, incredible effort in extra time with 10 men.

Brophy seems a different player to when I last saw him, could be a real asset for this team. Kasim looked up for it again which is nice, and when he plays like that he can control a game. Impressed with Stewart, not only the goal, but lots of nice touches and build up play. Norris looks useful, certainaly couldn't fault his commitment.

Shame about Jones' injury, hope it's nothing serious as he looked solid at the back.

All in all a very positive night, a couple more signings and we can have a very decent team indeed.

Well if that is a team that's going to struggle, I'm the sugar plum fairy. Great performances all through the team. QPR were no mugs either, If we'd have had 11 for the last 30 though I don't think we'd have got to penalties, as we wouldn't have let the 2nd in. Big mention for Stewart who looked a real menace. I swear at one point he nut megged 2 players and then went through a 3rd's legs himself! Norris also looked horrible to play against, he could quite easily have scored 4 with a little luck. If we play half as well against Chesterfield, they will be in for a hard 90 minutes.

Enjoyed the game last night and overall the better side, certainly created enough chances.
I cannot remember when I have seen so much effort from a Swindon side.
I didn't know we were playing with 10 men until our fans started to sing the fact.
They need a day off now, they must be totally knackered.

Stewart's goal, what a strike.
Norris must be knackered, did I read Gillingham fans thought he was lazy, he was suffering badly with cramp at the end but still kept going. Hope he is OK for Saturday he impressed me.

We've got some very good young players coming through by the looks of things. I bet Norris was gutted he didn't score at least one though. Would've been nice if he'd have poked it past the keeper in the last couple of minutes.

Where were the two fans sat? We had some moron behind us, who was shouting "get them off" about 2 players, ignoring the fact we had used all of our subs, after they had misplaced a pass each. And also not withstanding the fact they had both played well all game. Very very special.

Agree with all the above, a few things to add

- I though Thomas was excellent, a very busy little player, not the most eye catching but did the simple stuff well and really put a shift it

- I enjoyed the fans behind me going mental after Brophy's equaliser, despite, unfairly, calling him a 'useless ginger c**t' for the entire game up to that point.

- There are still some fans who would seemingly rather we tonked the ball up field and lost it than ever passed backwards. You'd have thought after three plus years of this style,  the 'FORWARD!' brigade would have realised their cries are a futile waste of breath. It would appear not.

-Sutton Reds new hipster beard really is magnificent.

That celebration between Brophy and Smith after his goal was a bit ginger wasn't it!

It was a shit and uninspiring draw (Rochdale again) even if we had got through so considering the size of the squad probably best we didn't!

I still can't work out if you would always end up with the same draw as your victor...I've looked at the FA Cup in the past and it seems to be done by alphabet, sort of.

Anyway a game v the defeated 62 LC finalists would at least have been a first in the competition for us.

As I said yesterday, the game was a free hit.....so it seems we got something out of it, in terms af team spirit.

However, we didn't need the ET and pens, coupled with the now traditional Scouse loan early injury syndrome.   Perhaps Williams wants to turn Anton into a CH, hence why he gave him the number 5 shirt.  Not so much the new Javier Mascherano, more the new Alan McCormack.

He sort of played a Hoddle sweeper role, and did pretty well, we were expecting it to be QPR shooting practice for the last 30, but bar the one time they really got a man over and scored, it never materialised.

We held out extraordinarily well considering we had one recognised defender on the pitch in ET. A bit last ditch at times but we survived until penalties.

Thomas looked poor last night, disappointing following his performance on Sat. Impressed with Hylton who looks nothing like a footballer and Stewart was impressive and tireless when he replaced him.

Iandolo continues to look a decent prospect, Tom Smith less so.

Definite stand out player was Norris who defied the lazy tag the Pikeys gave him and showed some excellent hold up play but can play his way out of trouble as well.

Most of all I forgot how much I love away games. Especially on a weeknight.

Funny how things are seen, I thought Tom Smith did well, reminded me of that horrible Perkins. Iandolo I didn't think got into the game! But to agree on one Hylton had a good game, best I've seen from him.

Echo what a lot of others have said, all round it was an excellent performance. The biggest difference is off the ball. The pressing, while not always perfect, is eager and consistent and with some work, will really bear fruit. Noticed it on Saturday in the second half too - we win the ball back, either directly or through throw-ins, high up the pitch and play in the middle third rather than the bollocks we had last year of winning it (if we were lucky) at CB and pissing around with it for a week.

Norris was outstanding. A little wasteful with a couple of very good chances early on but other that, really was a good number 9 performance.

Funny how it goes, but personally see nothing in Hylton. Must be close to 4th choice now, behind Young... Just doesn't effect games at all.

Kasim was absolutely imperious. Yes, people will say he fancies it again, wants a move etc but actually, the last 6 games of last year and the first 2 of this are the first period of games he's been fully fit for for a long time. Still, won't stop some having a whinge.

Jones look good if a little dodgy on the turn, a trait that mirrors JSW on the other side. Good job we've got NT behind them both.

Also, whisper it, Rodgers was good tonight. And final shout out for mr consistency Brad Barry. Listen to the haters - cheap option, only here cos we know his agent or some bollocks - or just watch him play. There's a reason he won players player and managers player last year, and he really has developed into a very good RWB. Just lacks that pace over the first two yards sometimes.

All in all, we have a collection of young players who look very very promising, and most of them are ours to develop. Said last year about 2 or 3 year cycles and last season being year 1. Brophy, Iandolo, Stewart all coming on leaps and bounds.

Something else I'd noticed in the last couple of matches is that despite having one up front they haven't looked isolated at all - plenty of support from Goddard on Saturday and then Hylton/Stewart last night. I wonder if we'll see Obika and Norris alongside one another or if one will be deeper?

I wonder if we'll see a bit more of Stewart now, too!

Interesting watching Norris's all-action display and wondering how on earth he'd play with Obika.

Personally think it'll be one or the other unless we're chasing the game. Goddard, Stewart, Young or whoever else is playing in the 10 have all looked to get up and even beyond in the two games so far. Also, the way we rotate the ball in the midfield often results in one of Kasim or, more effectively, Doughty (Thomas last night) pushing right on too.

As long as he doesn't get home sick and has a good attitude, I think we'll see a lot of him. He was good last night, but he did other less obvious  things well, he was constantly harrying their backs when the ball went to them, even to the point that from throw ins he was about 10mm from their intended outlet, and was really annoying him as he couldn't move without tripping over him :)

I can't see Norris and Obika forming a partnership which makes me think Obika is on his way out.

Kasim has freed Rodgers to play higher up which has benefitted him massively as well.

I said saturday how I was watching him pre match having a fool about with the other lads in the warm up, which was great to see - we have a young team, but if you listen to interviews and even Doughty last night on comms, our squad seem to be really good mates off the pitch which is only good news for someone like Stewart who obviously had trouble settling in.

Little things like joking about pre-match and havig some fun and games with each other make a huge difference for a young squad who maybe aren't quite seasoned professionals like some of the 'elder' members of the squad. All good signs stuff is going well behind the scenes.

Think you are reading too much into it. Obika can only play a few games on the bounce before he's injured. Wonder if he has a perpetual problem with something?

We have had a stream of players who have had a perpetual problem with football over the years?

Got back to my hotel at 12.30 last night, after deciding walking the 2 miles back from the tube station was a good idea (It wasn't).
Thoroughly enjoyable game which showed this sides got a lot of fight in it, to go along with the at times really attractive football. Don't think anyone had a bad game and the icing on the cake for me was Stewart's performance, along with his goal and celebration.
Rodgers, unfortunately, will never win over a section of our support which is a pity as he's not as bad as they make out. I'd agree that last night was his best performance to date yet there were still people getting on his back. Gutted that his penalty was saved.

One last thing, I think Sutton is preparing for his next gainful employment a little early. No one is looking for a Santa until November mate....

Its not often you come away from a cup game having lost on penalties and been very pleased with our evening's work last night.

I, of course was surprised to see Obika not in the squad but with Norris a ready made replacement was interested to see how he would do. To be honest, he had enough chances to have us out of sight, but you cannot fault his effort, desire and hold up play the 120 minutes. In all honesty, you couldn't be unhappy with anyone last night, although I was surprised to read that people thought Conor Thomas was good, I thought his touch continually let him down, although thankfully he's good  at tackling as his second touch was consistently a tackle. I thought he was better at Centre Back personally. Anton Rodgers was very good last night, his penalty well saved the only blot on his copybook. Brophy continues to shine and last word for Jordan Stewart, goal, assist and a very good penalty. Can only boost his confidence.

Overall, an entertaining game, sure QPR were probably below par, but what fight and desire shown.

Bit like the Leeds (Paul Robinson) game then.

Can't think of too many games I've been more proud of the team than that night

Spot on. That was a brilliant evening, amazing atmosphere and we were superb that night.

Watched the 90 minutes on the QPR site, didn't bother with extra time apart from watching Brophy's goal again.

Yep, very uplifting and encouraging. Many positives to come out of it, most of which have been highlighted. My personal favourite would be Jordan Stewart appearing to be getting back to the form of his Youtube 'highlight reel'. He's had a rough few months but his confidence has clearly not been affected looking at that strike and all round performance. Superb stuff.

Lots of reasons to be feeling good about STFC right now, which is all you can ask for really.

Stumbled across this video on Youtube today. Great footage of Brophy's goal from the QPR end, most of the penalties and of course of the Swindon fans celebrating! Which I always find very comforting to watch!

Cheers. I'd forgotten about the Stephen Merchant pitch invasion at the end.
