Title: scotland holiday Post by: kirky69 on Monday, August 1, 2016, 19:34:38 Planning a 7 day driving holiday with the missus in September. Starting at Edinburgh up to Inverness via Cairngorns then Fort William down through Loch Lomond finally to Glasgow. Any tips on places to see, do or stay would be much appreciated. Will take in Oldham away on way back down just to finish things off nicely or ruin the entire trip as the more likely outcome!

Title: Re: scotland holiday Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, 18:46:40 Drive to Oban from Fort William then down to Loch Lomond. The views are stunning Oban is lovely, and well worth a visit. If I could modify Tails' advice just a little, I'd recommend heading back to Glasgow & Loch Lomond via Inverary, and not via Crianlarich (which is what the route planner will suggest). Route (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Oban,+UK/Glasgow/@55.9584796,-5.1931704,8.46z/data=!4m19!4m18!1m10!1m1!1s0x488941d0d2ddf1c1:0x83dd4aff818fc237!2m2!1d-5.471047!2d56.415157!3m4!1m2!1d-5.084525!2d56.308253!3s0x488912f65728f789:0x102f14c805340bb8!1m5!1m1!1s0x488815562056ceeb:0x71e683b805ef511e!2m2!1d-4.251806!2d55.864237!3e0) It means you get to Inverary, which is lovely, and the top of Loch Fyne. And you pass Loch Fyne Oysters (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Loch+Fyne+Oysters/@56.2738966,-4.9261703,1233m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x9ae43d784f545b29!8m2!3d56.2721503!4d-4.9268907), which is well worth a visit...but most importantly, you get to drive over the 'Rest & be Thankful' between Cairndow and Arrochar which, to my mind, is about the most stunning landscape you'll find anywhere in Scotland. Title: Re: scotland holiday Post by: donkey on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, 18:57:09 The road to Applecross is nuts and well worth a drive. There's a pub at end which is a nice stopping point, too.
Title: Re: scotland holiday Post by: RedRag on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, 18:58:14 Glencoe is somewhere between Fort William and Oban and is quite beautiful - take a look at the webcam photo below for a full sense of its majesty......

Reindeer and other great animals including Highland wildcats are at the Highland Wildlife Park just north of Kingussie off the A9. The Falkirk Wheel is a remarkable piece of engineering worth a visit. Glasgow is a great city these days....the new Transport museum and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery (clise to each other) are good. If you fancy an island trip....on Wednesdays the Calmac Ferry from Mallaig to Rum and Canna. You can land on Rum for four hours or Canna for two....and great views of Skye and the Cuillins for the trip.
