Title: Ineptitude or coincidence.....
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, August 29, 2005, 23:52:26
....I believe our failure to score in 6 consecutive away games to now be an unwanted club record for Mr BWB....something not achieved in the 50's when we had to apply for re-election....73/74...81/82 the Prem season and thereabouts or 99/00 and the following season.  Congrats to the manager.

I think the 8 goals at home in the last three games puts in in perspective, goalscoring is clearly not a problem. And the fact that it spans two seasons means it's irrelevant, those games at the end of last year were meaningless. So 3 away games without a goal this year, one of which was a 0-0 but 8 goals at home.

In terms of stats, consecutive games span the seasons and have done since 1920

So you think its a coincidence......Walsall have conceded more home goals than any other team...so we should be anticipating at least scoring a few on Saturday.

I'd just like to point out we haven't failed to score at home in nearly 5 months. :advercool:

So the 0-0 draw with Shitty in April....a mere 6 home games ago never happened......shame because I fondly recall the pathetic turn out on the night , and how had Shitty won it would have put them in the PO's, yet somehow their fans couldn't be bothered.

Even with my inadequate maths ability the difference between the 4 month of the year and the 8th month of the year is a maximum of 4 months..which although approximating to 5 months, is not sufficiently close to be acceptable.

It's like saying we nearly scored an away goal at Barnsley, but Cureton missed the penalty.

I prefer accuracy...and am content that our 7 points from six games if maintained consistently through the season will see us with 54 points when rounded up.....sufficient in most cases to stay up.

The fact we score at home but not away suggests more of a tactical problem away from home, as we obviously have the personnel to score goals, but do not utilise them properly on our travels.

One up front is shit, means you're not playing in the spirit of the game, let's fucking go for it and see what happens.  Let's turn up at these far flung shit hole grounds through out the country and take it to them, not play one fucker up front, it's just not cricket.

We did play one up front at Trannie didn't we?  Apologies to all involved if we didn't.

Yeah we did play one up front and fallons game is more about keeping it up and laying it off.  Playing one up front lost us this game! King is a fool, he should have changed it at half time or the very least when the goal went in.  However as a tactical genious (been watching the top managers try the 20 mins left and we will change it routine) left it till dead on 70 mis and tried to get back into it, too little too late kingy again!

Reg, when was our last Away win?  I'm faily sure it was some time ago now, in fact, isn't our away record pretty awful?

This one puzzles me, why are teams, generally, so much worse away from home?  Obviously the crowd will play some factor in the performance of players, but this to me shows just how much of the game is in the head of Managers and Players.  With the exception of artificial pitches, and grounds in strange climates (grimsby's), why do players let the whole issue of the game being away impact so greatly on the way they play?

One issue you've not mentioned is travelling on the day...I'm guessing after a game on Sat....ours had Sunday off and travelled up on Monday setting off early....not the best preparation.....it is odd, but King has  a hand in something of an STFC rarity, a season when we won more away than at home.....00/01.  A similar season was 95/96, when away teams just came to defend.

We arre starting to develop a serious psychological problem....maybe King should go all out attack at Walsall....Swansea put 5 past them recently.....

I think walsall are maybe a bit like us,able to score but also dodgy at the back, nothing seems to have changed, wasn't the score last season 3-2?
About the walsall-swansea game, merson didn't half have a bitch about the swans, saying they won't do anything this season and they got lucky[yeah five times!].Hopefully we get the same kind of luck on saturday. :)

Personally I think it's a coincidence, I don't like looking back to last season as we've got almost an entirely new squad and whilst the players don't really need time to 'gel', you have to let things settle down a bit.

That said, we better score an away goal soon before it starts playing on everyone's minds.

That was Gurney's last game in his previous incarnation, he was crap,  didn't look as if his mind was on the job (well actually his mind probably was thinking of being on the job)

It was also the point where Nicho, went from being the best young left back in England to bag of dung.

Our downfall was orchestrated by Iffy who was doing tactics for Merson, who kept consulting him from the pitch......does Iffy do our tactics in the absence of Reeeeeeeves?

Having said that, at the end of last season we were hardly playing out of our skins for points...

I think we will get a few goals this week, 2 atleast.

we dont score many away because we got up there, try to shut up shop and steal a 1-0...but our defence is shit.

95-96 we got 46 points both home and away, but as you say Reg won more away than home, 13 away to 12 home. And 10 home draws because teams shut up shop to get a point.

I hope we get 3 points on Saturday, but at least score because these things do play on players/managers minds. Look at Sunderland, 19 games (i think) without a win in the Premiership. Not in a row as they've been out of it for two years but still gets quoted a lot and is bound to play on their minds.

Sunderland have actually lost 19 premiership games in a row I believe, 24 without a win.

Blimey, it's even worse then, that's bound to be in the back of their minds when they play every week.
