Title: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: horlock07 on Friday, October 16, 2015, 10:41:13 Probably only of interest to Reg, but nice to see some recognition for a man who did a substantial amount during the Victorian age.... including essentially facilitating the creation of 'modern' Swindon.

Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, October 16, 2015, 11:07:25 Is having a cheap pub named after him not enough? And a street by the station.....as a kid I was always taken by the sign Back of Gooch Street. Don't know if it is still there, but seemed to me to be the only street to have its back named. The original Sir Dan, was a lovely building....so in true Swindon planner style, bulldozed and replaced by a carbuncle. Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Hitchinred on Friday, October 16, 2015, 11:14:57 Thamesdown Transport used to have a heritage bus named after him as well. Remember catching it on a summer holiday special to the Oasis.
Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: horlock07 on Friday, October 16, 2015, 11:19:05 So he has a bus and a crap pub commemorating him... Swindon really celebrates its forefathers doesn't it!

Don't forget the street... Gooch was also a key driver for the setting up of the hospital in Emlyn Square...a sort of forerunner of the NHS. New and Old Swindon were only incorporated in 1900, and there was for a long time a sense of it being 2 different places. Not relevant at all, you're welcome. Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: horlock07 on Friday, October 16, 2015, 11:51:55 Don't forget the street... No one famous comes from Lancaster so we have no such named streets, we do however boast a Slip Inn Lane and a Bashful Alley! We also have lots of signs to Clitheroe.. which make you chuckle once someone points out what is says if you break the name in half... We are doing even less to honour Daniel Gooch here than Swindon has done, perhaps move to a new thread? Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: jayohaitchenn on Friday, October 16, 2015, 13:48:27 He was a northerner anyway.
Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Ardiles on Friday, October 16, 2015, 15:55:58 I was convinced that there was another Gooch Crescent/Close/Drive in West Swindon that I remember delivering papers to as a paperboy nearly 30 yrs ago. And I've just wasted about 5 mins looking for it...only now to realise that the road I was really remembering was Gower Close, Grange Park (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Swindon+SN5/@51.5566583,-1.8487327,3a,75y,281.84h,76.65t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sK0TEZ5Nrrt-psM6xiGbyQg!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DK0TEZ5Nrrt-psM6xiGbyQg%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D115.64313%26pitch%3D0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x48714106bbabb695:0xf575fa8929af3add). Funny how word association plays tricks with your memory.
Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Flashheart on Friday, October 16, 2015, 16:00:08 Isn't the Gooch the bit between the balls and the ring-piece?
Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: DarloSTFC84 on Friday, October 16, 2015, 16:04:44 Isn't the Gooch the bit between the balls and the ring-piece? Yeah, it fucking hurts when you underestimate the height of a railing, slip down and make full contact with it on the Gooch... Apparently. Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Pete on Friday, October 16, 2015, 20:07:37 We also have lots of signs to Clitheroe.. which make you chuckle once someone points out what is says if you break the name in half... I think Clitheroe was part of of the Scunthorpe problem, along with Penistone and Lightwater. Internet filters went mad. Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Red and Proud on Friday, October 16, 2015, 23:55:03 Isn't the Gooch the bit between the balls and the ring-piece? I understand the bit you refer to and it's equivelent female version to the the Taint. Taint you ball, taint yer arse. Likewise taint the flange and taint the arse.Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Skinny Pete on Saturday, October 17, 2015, 03:31:42 One of County Kerry's most famous gaelic footballers of recent years was nicknamed 'The Gooch'.
Fact! How fucking beautiful a backdrop this is - to be sure www.youtube.com/watch?v=px4xaVHPCqc Title: Re: Sir Daniel Gooch Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, November 6, 2015, 15:46:41 Pleased to find a painting in the Bath Road art gallery this afternoon, a fine piece " the Back of Gooch Street" Here it is fellow art fans...

Anyway, if only Gooch had thrown his sandwich somewhere else maybe Swindon would have remained a quaint market town atop a hill. Rather than be ruined by the invasion of the railway & all the related problems. |
