Whatever you thought of him as a manager he could bloody spot a player. If you only knew him as our manager that photograph of him on the Everton site is a bit of a shock! Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Costanza on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 13:35:40 He was absolutely bonkers at times. Stubborn, had his favourites and was firmly set in his ways.
But he gave us the 2003/04 season. One of my favourite failures(!) supporting Swindon - Parkin, Mooney, Fallon, Howard et al Title: Re: Andy King Post by: jayohaitchenn on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 13:37:15 58. Terrible, I'd wager that most of our parents are older than that.
Title: Re: Andy King Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 13:43:26 A personal friend and devastated by the loss.

RIP Kingy Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 14:07:42 Sad new indeed....Kingy's PO team, would be my second favourite, STFC failure team, behind Bob Smith's 78/79....79/80 outfit, but ahead of Cooper's 14/15 year olds.
Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Nick Bamosomi on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 14:15:19 I know he wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but I liked him.

Thanks for Super Sammy Migs, The Beast, Fallon, Sammy Igoe, Tommy Mooney Andy Gurney etc etc- some real talent and some real characters in his teams. Great memories of games like Leeds away where we gave them a real scare, thinking we were Wembley bound at Brighton and coming back from 3 down at Port Vale just about outweigh the negatives of Cheltenham away, Antoine Van der Linden at centre forward, and thinking stfc was no more away at Brentford.

Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Mark D on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 15:14:56 Shocked to hear the news. Andy was a real character around the County Ground. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which led to some interesting post match interviews but, on a shoestring budget, managed to get the 2003/4 team into the Play Offs with Brighton. He will be missed around the grounds. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP Andy.

Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 16:10:46 The Brighton Play-off game was the worst footballing memory I have. He wasn't the best manager ever, but he so nearly got us promoted.
RIP Title: Re: Post by: Oaksey Moonraker on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 16:11:02 Best Andy King interview has to be when Shaun Hodgetts rang him at home on a Thursday night in May 2001 when Bristol Rovers had blown their games in hand and we were safe.
Andy was clearly pissed off his head and slurring his words which gave an interesting interview with Shaun. From a different era and generation was Andy and one of our longest serving managers. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 19:27:47 Will never forget after the 1-1 draw with Hartlepool which cemented both our play off positions.
He called for me, my Brother and my Mate to join him in his office. Fridge door open we drank a few beers with him, shook hands with Cooper the Hartlepool Manager at the time and their Directors. So many treasurable moments I had with Kingy and feel devastated tonight that he is no longer with us. Feel for his Wife and family. He was "old school" and played with arrogance, fun and a smile on his face. He never lost that in his Managerial career and his Mum would always tell him off after his interviews "Andrew" :) He never did refine his interviews, he couldn't. Loved his stories of his days at Everton. The world loses one of those 70's players where wine, women and song was the norm. Money was realistic and the relationship with the Supporters was close. He knew that he was unpopular with a vast majority of fans at Swindon but what he did whilst having Diamandis influencing the Budget, was bringing in some real talent on a small budget. It was the time though off the field I will remember him fondly for. God bless you Andy King, thanks for everything and RIP. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: LincolnRedExile on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 20:34:34 Before the 2nd leg in the 2004 play off at Brighton, a couple of us were on Operations in southern Iraq and decided to ring Andy King up to wish him and the team well. All credit to him, he spent some 15 minutes on the phone to us and talked about the match, but was more concerned about how we were getting on. He even took the time in the pre match interview, live on Sky, to mention us even with everything going on. I will never forget that. RIP Andy.

I didn't always appreciate you fully at the time but by God those times when you were manager would have been absolutely dire without someone of your great humour, honesty and eye for talent. You brought fun and fight to what frankly was a shithouse club at the time. I hope you now find a little corner of Havana in Heaven and inject some real Kingy laughter. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Pete on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 22:51:41 I had another look at that 1977 fa cup tie and he's mentioned in the commentary. I remember the game but don't remember him playing against us.

Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Red Frog on Thursday, May 28, 2015, 09:25:59 Andy always had a very individual grasp on the English language. My favourite post-match comment was this anatomy-bending metaphor:
"The Achilles heel that has stood out like a sore thumb all season has come back to bite us in the bum." RIP. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: normy on Friday, May 29, 2015, 09:04:29 Good memories of Andy who was manager when I got my first season tickets. I seem to remember he said something about he didn't like 'fanny-flicking' players or football. Funny.
Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Baggins on Friday, May 29, 2015, 14:06:47 I've not posted on here in ages, but this has prompted me to log in again. I loved Kingy. He could spot a player, he wanted his teams to play entertaining football, and when asked a question he gave a direct answer. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I found that refreshing. The playoff team he put together was probably the second most entertaining team I've ever watched (behind '93) and he spotted most of those players, Parkin, Miglioranzi and Howard in particular. Howard, Igoe, Parkin and Mooney - we scored some wonderful goals with those four playing well. Given the off the field circumstances at the club at the time, I still think he did a great job. Over and above that, football needs characters, and he was certainly one of those. This news made me feel, if only for a few moments before life took over again, genuinely sad, melancholy annd a bit nostalgic.
Cheers Andy. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 01:58:10 Why Sack King?
Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Plastic on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 10:25:56 Ridiculous sacking IMO, in the summer the club sold Parkin and slashed the playing budget by 30%, King had no cash and could only get in free transfers on low wages, and players like Cuerton and Thorpe were abysmal despite clearly being quality signings, all factors beyond King’s control.
When some fans unfairly blasted King from the stands rather then just getting behind the team, King stood his corner took no shit and would deal with them head on, these fans took issue with the club having a manager that would not lick their arse, and who dared to stand up for himself, and in the end forced him out of the club which I believe was a total disgrace, and was counterproductive anyway as he probably would has turned it around and kept us that year. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Costanza on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 10:29:20 Kingy had taken Town as far as he could. Changes were needed, mostly at Boardman level, but it was time for him to leave Town when did.

Title: Re: Andy King Post by: THE FLASH on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 11:15:21 Why had he taken the club as far as he could? Looked at the fare in the Taxi and realised he was going to run out of money!? Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Plastic on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 11:20:42 Looked at the fare in the Taxi and realised he was going to run out of money!? He was the driver tho, not responsible for the fare only the route. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: Batch on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 11:20:51 Why Sack King? Aaah, philosophical South Stand graffiti. On reinstatement I don't think Kingy ever recovered from not being Roy Evans in some fans eyes. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 12:12:26 He was the driver tho, not responsible for the fare only the route. The club at the time was rotten to the core. A few "good guys" were the minority in a club dictated by Diamandis. Very sad day when Kingy was sacked was actually with him after the game. Always remember his words, "Banbury you will be always be here a lot longer than me." Referring to the fact that we the Supporters outlive players and managers alike. Saddest legacy with Kingy was that he was never liked by the Swindon fans despite running on a shoestring. He got on well with Sturrock and was vocal that his budget was over 3 times bigger than Kings when he got us in the play offs. All irrelevant now but reading the Everton message Boards you realise how big an icon he was. A terrific player and a good guy. Was very kind to me and introduced me to many footballers and stories that I will always be grateful for. We take our football seriously but with Kingy he brought a smile behind the pressure. Yesterday I found the bottle of Champagne in my lads room signed by him and Sam Parkin when he was born. That was one of many touches that will always stay with me. RIP Andy and simply thanks. Title: Re: Andy King Post by: No Longer Posh Red on Sunday, May 31, 2015, 14:14:18 Very sad to hear that he had passed away.
Did some very good things at STFC, although my opinion of him changed when my son was mascot for the day when he was manager, he wouldn't sign an autograph, pose for a picture or even say hello to us and came across as a properly arrogant bloke.
