My BT contract has ended and I'm doing a bit of shopping about.

One option I have noticed is a broadband only deal from Virgin. I hardly ever use the landline and people generally call our mobiles anyway.

Has anyone else done away with a landline phone? Am I missing anything by ditching it?

Well, seeing as every broadband deal includes the rental of a landline, you may as well keep it for calls.

Unless you are going the mobile broadband route, in which case, ditch it.

Seeing as most line rentals are in the £15/16 range and the actual broadband is relatively peanuts, how does the Virgin charges compare?

Just looked and the prices with and without landline are near as a gnat's nob the same

I've never had one.

I haven't connected my home phone to the landline and I won't be doing so anytime soon. Only thing is certain numbers e.g. 0845 are more expensive to call if you're using a mobile. Get an app like say no to 0870 and you can call for free.

I guess the only other scenario is if the mobile network went down and you desperately had to call someone. But it's not worth paying line rental for that. 

0845s are cheap as chips on 3 mobile.

We ditched our landline years ago when we were in a virginmedia area, didn't miss it at all.

We then moved into non Virgin territory and so got the landline back and gained nothing.

Now we've moved again we're actually grateful for the landline as mobile reception is awful.

So ditch it Sam, nothing to regret.

Mobile call costs aren't a major concern - work cover most of that.

I think I will ditch it. I can always get a "landline" number from someone like Sipgate for those companies that insist on one.

There are no companies that insist on it as far as I know. I always say I don't have one and had no problems

On a related topic, anyone living in SN2 postcode and can recommend a broadband provider.

Got sky 40 Mbit fibre product here, solid as a rock, would go faster if I paid for it. Probably switching to BT soon, expect it to be exactly the same.

Virgin serve most of the area too, can't comment as we live on a private spur road that they seemingly didn't bother with, though there is a suspicious as yet unidentified coax cable coming up near out house that may be virgin..I digress.

Personally what I have is plenty fast enough, so I'd go for the best offer, check quidco too. When I joined sky gave me 6 months half price, and quidco paid over £100

Not sure if covers fibre though, wasnt close enough to tv to see the small print  ::)

Are you moving/have you moved back to the 'don?

Should add our normal ADSL before fibre was poor, we got 2.5-3.5 mbps dl (Sky/Zen). We were connected to the Blunsdon exchange which is basically miles away. Presumably this is true of most/all of the area.

Not sure if Haydon Wick itself is SN2, but I  read some of that area was connected to a shitty local exchange that is probably 'ok' for normal ADSL, but looked unlikely to get fibre any time soon.

Guess you'll be able to check these things using the actual SN2 address.

I'm looking at moving back. It's been over 20 years since I lived in Swindon, but I doubt much has changed!

Quidco is great for broadband, phone and television providers. I got £220 cashback for joining Virgin so good advice :)

I pay talk talk £8.50 per month. I get 38meg fibre and although I still have a landline I pay only for the calls I make which is none except for free phone numbers. Pay the line charges upfront each year which works out at £9.95 a month.
Their customer service has improved loads and they are cheap as chips.

New customers will get great deals whoever they go with really. Shop about and use quidco as batch advised
