Sonic, enlighten us on the fine watering holes of Bampton  :D

I used to go out with a girl from Cartoon Town (Carterton) and of the 3 pubs there not one was decent.  Allways full of inbreds from Brize.

I think the Southbrook has a decent cycling team.

The landlord at the Merlin is leaving soon, so prepare for it to get shit.

The food when there isnt a match on is great.  the house burger (burger, onion rings, bacon, bbq sauce, cheese) is superb.

Surely your silky skills could change the teams fortunes, Ash??

your not wrong either. It reminds me of the old pub which is now The Stones in Chippy (3 bells was it???)
i only play football for them, i don't drink in there.

Mind you the barmaid (Sally) is a quality bit of kit. probably why so many go back after the game for food.

Not bad ones just someone I don't particularly want to see as he is a bit of an idiot.  I used to watch them play every weekend.  They are good!!!

Pub is old fashioned though, too small.

We used to do the quizzes too now and again reg but its really small and stuffy in there.

I prefer Mackenzies to be honest, nice pub and the Merlin before match games or sunday afternoons!

Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, 12:26:27
That's what makes it weird, as it is an old fashioned country style small local, that has been swamped by new housing but  anomalously retains its character.

Title: Post A Picture Of Your Local
Post by: Luci on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, 12:31:31
Exactly.  I think they have tried to modernise it but not really worked.  Their idea of modernising seems to be high priced drinks and shots etc. when there isnt a market for that there.

Apparently as soon as these landlords leave it will be turned into another house as they do not want to keep it open for much longer.  I think the land is owned by the council believe it or not!

Re STFCLady's post

Its a shame to hear that.....another nail in the coffin, for the traditional pub.....corner stone of our island race.

Title: Post A Picture Of Your Local
Post by: Luci on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, 12:41:39
I know some people I know have drank in there for so many years.  Im not 100% sure what will happen yet but I remember them mentioning before that the land is so valuable for housing.

You're right though, they're disappearing by the minute.

The pool tables still only 50p though (which is very rare) and they've got some old skool football shirts. I really hope they don't move/demolish it. Its so convinient for a beer before going out into town.

Another fave of mine has to be the lava lounge (can't find a pick but check out lavalonge.co.uk)
