Was coming back home at about 3am on the M4 today, doing a steady 80ish when I thought I saw a camera flash at about central reservation height.

2 things - aren't cameras usually sited higher than that and do they really go off for that sort of speed?

If yes, a real pisser of a holiday homecoming.

I always understood that the rule of thumb  for setting is speed limit plus 10% so would be around 77-78 for a motorway.

But never seen one set so low or (assuming you weren't in roadworks) sited in the reservation as wouldn't it be a dangerous nightmare to setvice/maintain?

But could be proven wrong my yearly mileage has dropped from 25-30k a year to less than 2k after changing jobs so not so much up with such matters.

Incidentally don't know what it's like down there this morning but they are out in force with the breathalysers up here this morning.

It is difficult, though, to have a mind set to sit on a motorway and plod along at 70 - even more so when the fucker is empty.

I still reckon people should be forced to drive old minis for at least a year after they pass their driving test. You learn respect of other road users, you're limited to ragging it to 70, and any dents, dings or problems can be easily fixed with a hammer and some chewing gum, teaching you how to look after a car properly as well.

Mind you, modern car manufacturers seem dead set on removing the driver from the equation of maintenance, so perhaps that last point is moot.

Cruise control. I wouldn't be without it on the motorway now. Set it to 70mph and enjoy a nice pleasant drive.

I'd be very surprised if you got done for 80, and was that 80 on your cars speedometer, as if it was you were probably only going 77/78 ish anyway.

I stick my cruise control on 80 and never get any bother, do about 33k a year. Police don't even mind you overtaking them at 80, we'll not the ones I've passed.

Surely they need to be a lot higher than that to pick up the car registration?
