THE LIST: 17 Swindon Town players named Smith

PAUL PLOWMAN dips into the County Ground archives again to bring you a list of Smiths that had varying degrees of success with Swindon Town. One died of pneumonia at 34, another retired after a bus ran over his foot and then there was the Smith who went on to play in the NFL for the New England Patriots...

15. PAUL SMITH

An experienced, battling midfielder, Paul was brought in by Iffy Onuora in an attempt to lift Town out of the relegation zone. With Paul in the side, five out of nine games were won. In nine games when he was out with an ankle injury, Town won just once - and they went down. Any hopes of a contract for the following season evaporated when Onuora was sacked.

Don't remember this guy at all!

Bald slightly overweight, was actually pretty decent. We tried to sign him in the summer but he turned us down for Walsall.

Really good player, exactly what we needed at the time, other than he was obviously injured....played shed loads for the Gills. I'd imagine he'd be in their all time top ten.  Had he stayed fit we wouldn't have gone down that season.

John NHL smiths brother posted about him, his version of how he got scouted and the 'snowplow game' on here a year or three ago.

Think it's somewhere in the NHL thread. Can't check now.

One of the few highlights of that season and we'd been crying out for a player like him for a good few years prior to that. And probably now too...

Danny Hollands is exactly that type of player and looks like hes available on a free too as he is out of contract at Charlton.

Didn't Paul Smith score a wonder goal?  Not sure but think it was a 40 yard free kick

You're thinking of Paul Evans.

There was only one Smith for town aand that was the great roly poly John who was a midfield maestro who should have stayed at a higher level but for his love of a tipple or two! My hero that cup winning season.

Chatting to a Gills fan at work, he says easily one of their best ever. He won player of the season every year he was there.

They stitched him up though apparently. After he was at Walsall and things didnt go too well for him, Gills promised him a contract if he signed on loan. After the loan ended, they went back on their word and left him without a club. We picked him up after that.

Typical Pikey behaviour....their lack of class was confirmed by an ex chairman of theirs...Clifford Nomark, well something like that, who verbally abused Cecil Green an old fashioned gentleman and director of STFC, who liked fair play.

Maybe Jed should try and buy the Gills off Scally for a quid....he'd be right at home there.
