My son has been flirting with the idea of playing for a kids team recently.

He is ten in a few weeks, has a ST, so any participation would have to be Saturday am or anytime Sunday. We live in SN5.

Anyone recommend a junior team over our way who are friendly and would welcome a new pair of legs? I know the season is coming to a close but to go to some training sessions would be good for him as he needs to understand what commitment is and I'd rather he realise it now and not waste everyone's time than at the start of the season. I don't expect him to get any games as I'm not sure exactly how good he is, how fit he is or how mentally tough he is to withstand the knocks.

Is he currently in year 5 at school?  If so it's a good time to start looking, because that age group goes from playing 7 a side to 9 a side next season, so lots of teams will be looking for extra players. North Wilts youth football is played on a Sunday morning, so fits around Town games.

 Fatbasher, if you look in the Swindon Advertiser on a Tuesday there is a complete round-up of local youth league footy with tables and results for all age groups.

If you go to the North wilts fa link, there is a list of teams that are looking for new players.  Sorry, I'm on my phone and don't know how to post the link.  Nearest to you, there are 3 Lydiard teams, 2 play in Div 3 and 1 in Div 4, there are 2 Shaw teams, 1 plays in Div 3 and one in Div 4 and 2 Abbey Meads teams, 1 in Div 3 and 1 in Div 4.

Worth doing some research as I've seen all sorts watching my nephew play. Some teams are just thugs, some very organised and well coached, some a total mess with crap coaching. Depends what he wants to get out of it.

 I spent years doing all the jobs at a JFC, and there's a lot of them to do.  So my advice if you want the lad to get an idea of commitment, then the best way is to make sure you get involved yourself....do as much or little as you can.

Too many parents at this level assume that a JFC is somehow just there as some kind right for their little lovely, a view carried over from and into wider society...ie rights without responsibility. What can we take without needing to put anything in....

Its been an interesting season for mine this year, can't say too much in public but lets say some parents (of other teams) take things a bit too seriously/far sometimes. We all want our kids teams to do well, but are talking U10's here FFS, now there is a Wilts FA enquiry about said incident! Thankfully I wasn't involved/none of the kids were, and it wasn't physically violent.

I play U16 and pretty much every club loses players around this time of the year in all age groups so new ones are probably needed. Games are usually played on Sundays. Rearranged games are usually also sundays but you get the odd Saturday ( I had one at 10:30 this morning) and sometimes if it gets so bad there are wednesday and thursday night fixtures but that might just be for higher age groups.

Nope not just older age groups. We currently have a Wednesday game which we are looking to flip to a Saturday (not sure why it wasn't anyway).

We nearly had to play Friday Saturday then Sunday this week. Thankfully the Friday game got moved.

That's mad! I know the weather has really screwed the season up but you'd think they'd not even try it.

Weather really effected ours. Didn't play through January, half of December and start of February. Have about 8 games to make up.
