Title: You fat bastard....
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, 11:02:42
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/feb/04/two-thirds-adults-overweight-england-public-health

Apparently in Swindon we're well above the national average...

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/10986620.We___re_the_fattest_town__figures_say/?ref=var_0

So come on own up what's your BMI like....FWIW mine is just on the edge of not overweight 24.7, but tends to fluctuate over a winter.

TBH I'm trimmer now in my fifties than I was in my thirties.

I don't drink nearly as much as I used to, so that must have something to do with it.

My ruled of thumb is if, standing upright, you look down and can't see your tackle best lose some weight - unless you're hung like John Holmes

I'm at the ideal weight for 6 foot 3.

 Unfortunately I'm 5 foot 10.

Think I'm around the 21 mark.

Just did mine online (as it happens I weighed myself this morning) and my BMI is 23.9. I got to the verge of overweight but having tight jeans annoyed me so I started to walk, swim and play football more and I've managed to shed some weight.

Mine is 36.7 but i have lost over 2 stone in the last year & i'm at the point where i have gone as far as i can for a while.

Im also 23.9 which is in the normal weight category.  As I was 33.9 in august 2012, well into the obese range, I think that's pretty good.  But to be fair BMI is just an indicator.  Doesn't really take into account muscle.  At my height if I was more muscley Id probably tip into the overweight catergory.

I'm on a no alcohol tues-thurs, cut down on beer and started running again c/w smaller portions. I'm 3st over where i want to be by end of June as it stands.

Yeah so I guess i'm probably obese according to the stats but don't look or feel it....

25.3 which is a huge improvement on my previous 33.6.

Although BMI is really a load of bollocks, it's just a ratio of your weight against your height squared. It takes no account of individual circumstances and assumes everyone is of the same body type.

Whilst at the lower and higher ends it's a good indicator of how under or over weight you are, it's pretty meaningless otherwise.

If you really want to gauge 'healthiness' then you need to be looking at other things like body fat percentage, resting heart rate, blood pressure etc.

An overweight 29.7 according to the nhs calculator.
Know I'm carrying extra timber which I put down to not enough exercise and eating too much. I don't care to he honest and am content in myself

You need to cut down on all those takeaways...

Currently 24.1, having put a few pounds while on leave last week (too much beer!).

BMI is a bit of a blunt instrument, but useful as a ready reckoner for people starting a diet to work out a target weight.

ha. They have been cut to be honest. 2 a week at the most.
My diet is pretty good. I just eat too much of it.

I unintentionally lost a load of weight before Christmas...back down to my pre-uni weight which puts my BMI at 21, though having not been near a gym for a decade my bodyfat is probably nearly double compared to then.

I'm underweight according to BMI, but that's only because I have a low body fat count. If you use proper medical conditions of health I'm fit as a butchers dog playing the fiddle.

How did you lose weight unintentionally?

Dysentery?

So anyone any theories as to why Swindon has got so many porkers?  The stats reveal an island of lard in a sea of dripping.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2014/feb/05/most-overweight-areas-england-mapped

My theory...too much car dependency, too many fast food places, what is it 7 MacDonalds...shifting working patterns, meaning too many unemployed, and large amounts of sedentary jobs. Continued cutbacks from SBC in sports and leisure, places like the Oasis and Link must be 30-40 years old and nothing has been added in that time.

I read somewhere in Cumbria is the highest. You would have thought with all that lovely countryside that the good people of Cumbria would like nothing more than getting outdoors.

The proximity of Sellafield has probably mutated them....I noticed in the south west, the other spike of 70+ is near Hinkley Point

I was always underweight in my school days. Always found it difficult to be anything other than a scrawny bag of bones! Finally got myself out of the 'underweight' category while at uni, and been fairly stable just above it ever since.

My BMI is 29 :( But it is down from 34. Low fat custard, low fat custard.

Actually, now us fatties outnumber stick insects 7 to 3 we should wipe the judgemental bar stewards out out. If only we could ctch them.

This thread caused me to weigh myself for the first time in years resulting in a BMI of 22.

Rarely exercise and eat crap, I'll shall naively carry on this way and use this as reassurance of my brilliant health.

I'm just under 6ft and weigh 205 lbs. I probably have a shit bmi but when I lost weight many years ago and went down to 12 stone,  people actually remarked and asked if I was ill  ::)

You want to start in Kensington and Chelsea.

Actually, come to think of it, the kind of people who would lie about their weight on a survey are the kinds of people that inhabit the 'thinnest' places in the country. I call bullshit.

I don't know how BMI works but my guess is the answer is not just in losing weight but also in building muscle through exercise. Most body builders are overweight but their BMI would be very low and yet just using a chart based on weight and height doesn't take that into allowance.

If I use a chart my BMI is 29 - if I use my scales which have a BMI sensor it is 23.2...

Another point is I used to have a 'Beergut' but in actual fact it was nothing to do with beer... I cut out gluten (bread, pasta etc) and now my beergut has gone and I don't feel bloated all the time

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: kerry red on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:01:19
But you still drink beer, right?

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: @MacPhlea on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:02:19
No, but I cut that out first and the beergut didn't shift - it was only when I cut all gluten out it happened

I still drink wine and vodka...

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: 4D on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:06:27
Hmm, gluten. I might try and cut that down. I'm in reasonable shape but have that stupid squidgy bit of chub above the waistband

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: @MacPhlea on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:15:48
Seriously worth a go... The clincher for me was eating a sandwich and feeling like I had eaten a three course meal almost immediately afterwards.  You've got to have a mindset that checks everything for gluten to begin with but you soon realise what is and isn't.  Breakfast is cornflakes followed by fruit or English breakfast with eggs bacon, mushroom, hash brown and beans/tomatoes. My lunchtime sandwich has been replaced with Tesco's sushi and evening meal can be pretty much anything as long as it doesn't contain wheat...

It was never intended as a diet but my BMI (on the scales) started (3 months ago) at 29.8, I've lost a bit of weight (was 18st now 17st) but my body shape has change completely (more toned) with no additional exercise

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:31:45
I'd guess that your weight loss is a lot more to do with the inadvertent reduction of carbohydrates by choosing to eat gluten free.

Title: Re: You fat bastard....
Post by: @MacPhlea on Thursday, February 6, 2014, 13:45:56
Quite possibly but I wouldn't say I have reduced carbs as I replaced bread with rice or potato in most cases

How did you lose weight unintentionally?

Dysentery?

I didn't have an appetite for a long time due to:
1) A dick head ex-girlfriend which just so happened to be my best mate's cousin. Fun for jayohaitchenn who really should have taken the piss out of me more than he did; not so much for me.

2) An ear infection which lasted for over a month. Antibiotics for 4 of those weeks made me feel sick and every time I had something to eat it was a risk. Plus it cut down the weekend drinking (I rarely drink in the week these days).

He has aids.

Untrue, I've been tested and that.

*Gayds

*GRID. I believe it's the correct term, I looked it up on thetownend.com.

The scales with sensors in measure bodyfat percentage, not BMI.
